If you have never read a book in this series I suggest you DO NOT start with this one. Though it says the books can be read as standalones, there is way too much history and build up at this point so I recommend you start with one of the following books in the series :
- The Reckoning
- The Last Girl
- The Stranger You Know (This is the best book in the series and if you plan on reading just one, I suggest you pick this up - it's fantastic !)
AT LONG LAST, some closure and development in the Derwent and Kerrigan front and the prolonged will they/won't they moments they've had over the span of, well...too many books in the series. One thing I've got to admit, Derwent and Kerrigan enjoying suburban frivolities did seem a bit out of character to me (I know they were undercover but part of their mannerisms when they were being their real selves just didn't seem true to who they are). These characters develop into different versions of themselves which keep them interesting but still remain true to who they are at their core, both good and bad, which gives you a sense of familiarity as a long time fan of the series, as if you knew them personally.
Seeing them finally surrender to what has always been known yet suppressed for so long was absolutely thrilling and cathartic ! I was tearing away when it FINALLY happened 😅 Kerrigan fans, run to this book right now and you'll be swept off your feet and spun around in the air (and dropped a little suddenly to your feet but if you know this series, surely you expected nothing more or less ? 😏).
If you are new to the series I suggest you backtrack quite a bit and start with one of the 3 recommended above. Skipping a book you may not be into in the series won't really disrupt your familiarity with the storyline overall, so you need not hesitate starting something you think you don't have the time to finish.
My Derwent and Kerrigan heart is beating faster than ever....but for how long exactly ?👀
I guess I'll find out by the next one ! Counting the days....
