Thin Air: A Ghost Story

A pretty good, creepy story about a group of English mountaineers setting out to reach the summit of Kangchenjunga in the Himalayas. This ended up being a quick read in spite of finding the first couple of chapters a little slow to hook me. Set in 1935, the story portrayed very well the sneering superiority of the privileged British male of that time, the casual racism and their scathing views and treatment of both cultures, and classes other than their own. Both the mountain and the extreme weather conditions also felt very real, I felt I wanted to throw on a few extra woolly layers! The plot itself was very similar to one of the author's previous books, Dark Matter, about an ill fated Arctic expedition - freezing temperatures, blizzards, glaciers, isolation, a mysterious presence - I wondered if perhaps it was a little too similar. I did really enjoy it though, the sense of creeping dread and the whole raving bonkers versus haunted thing had a distinctly gothic vibe going on and I'm always a sucker for that.
