Terrifically horrible, a gonorrheal mess. Overly lauded by megastar writers because, as book critic for TIME, Grossman has been pivotal to an extent for some of their fame & $. Obvi.
Alas, one reads it and knows right around page three hundred what a swamp the rest of the voyage will be, as superduper 2D Harry-Hermione-Ron-Luna-& co. avatars (at a discount) find themselves, I fuck with you NOT, in a fish out of water but lame trip to the land of Narnia. A generic one, as well. It really is just those two books sewn together. That's all. Oh, and the main character has a threesome with a boy & a girl. Soooo provocative. The disenchantment happens way earlier than page 300--I lied--but somehow I keep hating myself for spending so much time trying to reach the end of this ill-conceived drivel. Who am I kidding? I was bored after page 121. (What a dud!!)
"Book critic"!? This is like that one time Roger Ebert wrote the screenplay for Beyond Valley of the Dolls: IF it had been a mega success that--like many in this literary world--are actually ill won.

Well I am not a mega writer and have made no money off Lev Grossman. But I did love all three books, weaknesses and all.

Huh? You are arguing that this is a rip-off of Harry Potter in the maturity / provocation stakes? I love HP, and I really liked Grossman's darker riff on similar themes ... the 2 are really worlds apart. A provocative review, though, that made me think hard about both franchises and their trigger points.

You gave it one more star than I did! :)

YES!!!!!!!!God I hated this book sooooooooo much. The first Fantasy book i ever read that I was actually mad that I had read. Such a waste of time
Cannot believe you lied to us ;) I am still so on the fence if I want to read this book. It definitely got pushed a little down my TBR
The tragic part of this book (and the next one) is that they are barely good enough for me to want to know how the rest of the story goes. It's like eating another box of donuts even though you know you're going to vomit at the end.
I have a co-worker that tried to offer this up to me. Little did he know that I already read it. He gives so much praise to this series and I just give him the side-eye like he's lost his mind. I shouldn't take his suggestions seriously tho. He wanted me to read The Night Circus and that was a waste of my time too. I whole-heartedly agree with your views on this. Thank you.
See, I was avoiding reading anything about Grossman because I hated the book so much I didn't want to give any more of my brain to him. But the fact that he was a Time book critic explains SO MUCH and I actually feel better that there's such an obvious and venal reason for it to have been promoted the way it has. Thank you.
