4.5 stars
When I saw this book on Edelweiss, I had a good feeling about it. Something told me this would be great. And I'm so glad I followed my guts with this one. Monstrous is amazing!
Monstrous is MarcyKate Connolly's debut and it's about Kymera. Kymera is created to save the girls of Bryre from the evil wizards, or so she thinks. Kymera is not a normal girl. She has wings, a spiky tail, bolts in her neck and the claws and eyes of a big cat. If people would see her, they'd hunt her out of fear. But one night she meets a boy named Ren and they become friends. And what he knows may change everything.
I'll be honest and say that this book is not for everyone. It reminds me of Far Far Away by Tom McNeal. It has that fairy tale vibe that I love so much! The writing is so, so good. I loved the mysterious and haunting feel I got from this book. It's so original and really compelling. It didn't let me go for a second. I definitely get why they compare it to Frankenstein, because it reminded me of that a lot, even though I'm not familiar with that story. I think it's Frankenstein mixed with the tales by the Brothers Grimm. And if you love that kind of stuff, this is perfect for you!
I really loved Kymera. We saw the world through her eyes from the moment she wakes up. She was such an original character and I loved her! Even though people see her as a monster, she's good at heart and she's so brave. I loved her. I loved her relationship with Ren, their growing friendship. I did not trust the father for one second. (view spoiler)[And I was right, too. I knew I couldn't trust that guy. (hide spoiler)]
Is it a bit predictable? Yeah maybe, but I didn't mind and the ending did ultimately surprise me. It really is like the classic fairy tales. No happy ending here. Not really. When I got this from Edelweiss and I read the first sentence, I just couldn't stop. I was hooked from the first page to the last and I really, really loved it.
I'd recommend this wonderful book to fans of classic fairy tales and Frankenstein. It really is amazing and I'm going to keep a close eye on this author!

But the fact that it'sListen, if you're going to give a book the title of a Fleedwood Mac song, I'm going to be interested no matter what it's about. But the fact that it's a book in my favorite genre is definitely a bonus. I'm ashamed to admit this is my first Eric Smith book, but boy am I glad I read it. You Can Go Your Own Way is a heartwarming, funny and amazing book and definitely one of my favorites of the year so far.
I loved everything about this book. The setting of Philly - which is as much of a character than any of the people in the book - the characters, the story. It just tugged at my heartstrings at all the right times while also making me laugh out loud plenty of times. The way the story is told, and how social media is used, hooked me right from the start. I read this book pretty much in one go because I just couldn't stop reading.
Adam, one of our main characters, was really my favorite. He's still so deeply in his grief after losing his dad and I related so much to him and his inability to let go of things. Especially his father's arcade. He's such a sweet guy and I honestly just wanted to wrap him in blankets and reassure him everything would be okay.
There's also Whitney, who I needed to warm up to a little bit? But I love her nonetheless. She's caring and devoted and passionate and it was really really nice to see her find herself in this book. Her love for plants is one I, for one, cannot relate to because I am one of those people that can kill even the most tough of plants. But I loved that about her! The way she loved them and cared about them and got insulted whenever someone says it's "just a plant". Her relationship with Adam is a rocky one since his father died but throughout the book they become friends again and maybe even more? And it was so nice and sweet and genuine and it made my heart so happy.
Also, the parents in this book. YES. I love awesome parents in YA! This book definitely nailed that part (though I'm still hesitant about Whitney's father). But the moms are all A+. And all the other characters too! Just... GAH. Everything. Everyone. I loved it so much.
You Can Go Your Own Way made me laugh, swoon, tear up and everything in between and I am booting up Eric's other book, Don't Read The Comments as I'm typing this because I'm honestly mad at myself for not reading it sooner now. I highly recommend this wonderful gem of a book and I know it's not releasing for a while but I just couldn't stop myself from talking about it. Because it was just. That. Good.
Read this when you have the chance, seriously. ...more

First I fell head over heels in love with the fantastic Simon vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda and now I have fallen into a puddle of love and heart-eyes for Jason June's debut Jay's Gay Agenda. Really, it's all about statistics.
There's so much to love about this book. From how diverse and queer it is to how relatable and real the characters are. And honestly? I could rave about this book for ages and still wouldn't be able to fully explain why I love it so much. I fell for Jay, the MC, hard and fast. His love for maths and lists and stats and his eagerness to be part of the gay community were so adorable and honestly? Partly relatable too. I suck with numbers, but I get that feeling of wanting to be surrounded by queer friends. But Jay also makes mistakes. Because life is messy like that. And that's what made him even more relatable to me. I really loved him and ached for him and laughed with him and felt sad with him all at the same time.
But Jay isn't the only amazing character because there's a host of side-characters that I also loved. Like his best friend Lu, who is kick-ass and I personally would love to have as a best friend as well. There's the genderqueer Max who is all kinds of cute and amazing. And then there's the love interest Albert who is geeky and adorable and into robotics and computers and plays what I can only assume is this book's answer to Pokemon GO.
Just everything about this book is pitch-perfect to me and I haven't even mentioned how amazingly sex-positive it is. Which, in my opinion, we need more of in YA! It's honestly like t his book was written especially for me and I connected with it in a way I haven't connected with a book in a while.
Jay's Gay Agenda is the queer YA rom-com of my dreams and it made my heart sing and my eyes turn into huge hearts from page one. I will read every book Jason June delivers and I will probably never stop shouting about how amazing this book is.
Also, as a last note, this is the first review I have written in a long time and honestly, there's no better book than this one to break my reviewing slump. GO READ IT WHEN YOU CAN!...more

I'm all for a mixed-race trans boy on his quest to find love in a cute rom-com. Those who know me even a little bit, know that. But what irked me this time around was the main character. I just really really did not connect with him at all. He's very self-centered and quite frankly, annoying too?
I still love the diversity and representation in this book, don't get me wrong, and the premise is fantastic. The MC just really put me off this time around....more
