i also just didn't vibe with the writing style, which i didn't for the first one either, but i wanted to read this anyway bc much ado...more

(i will admit that the vast majority of the criticism books were sara, but we also talk about 30-odd retellings and at least 10 productions and those were all me. we balance out ...more

(and rai thought it was romantasy.) it was actually urban fantasy with a sarcastic narration voice (and extremely minimal romance), and i had a good time reading it. the worldbuilding does have some holes or fuzzy unexplained bits, but it's easy (for me at least) to look past them since it does follow the rules/structure it does explain, and i really liked the writing voice and the characters. my favorite were the relationship between rune and brand, and then quinn just in his entirety.
bummed it doesn't have audiobooks, since i want to read the next one!...more

a fair amount hinges on talea and shivan's relationship, but unfortunately that is not one that convinces me. however! i am absolutely obsessed with thurvishar and senera. my favorites. i love them so much their relationship is the best....more

i'm also a sucker for mind magic/mental connection and i liked how it was done here, especially in the second half when it was more prominent (though lowkey i wish there were more use of it, especially in the first half).
