What do you get when you combine complex magical concepts with Ilona Andrews' sharp wit and brilliant sense of humour?
You get the Hidden Legacy series.
I have always adored Ilona Andrews' works, which have - in so many ways - redefined the urban fantasy genre. Every one of their books is a unique twist on the very nature of magic and magic users, brought to life by multifaceted characters and spectacular world-building.
I originally read (and loved) the first three books in the series that were centred around Nevada Baylor and her adventures. Nevada, however, was not the only bright star in the series. Her eccentric, incredibly talented, and devoted family was filled with memorable characters. I remember wanting so badly to know more about each of them and their unique abilities.
Then came Books 4, 5, and 6 to answer my prayers. It was finally Catalina's time to shine!
Catalina - one of Nevada's sisters - is the focus of Books 4-6.
Her unique gift (no spoilers but she is powerful with a capital 'P'), and her interactions with the very suave and captivating Alessandro Sagredo, created the perfect foundation for one of my fave fictional romances ever.
These books also provide readers with so many funny scenes! I grew to absolutely adore their family even more (they're now on par with the Weasley family for me!) and the hilarious antics they get up to are the icing on the cake:
"Once I mentioned Alessandro, the family had ganged up on me. Arabella screamed like a pterodactyl and demanded to know where Alessandro was staying, while punching her palm with her fist. Bern swore, which had happened exactly six times since he came to live with us. Grandma Frida promised to hit Alessandro with a wrench when he came over. Leon produced a gun, and then Mom asked him what the rule was about guns at the dinner table, and then he said that this was a special case and he had a bullet with Alessandro’s name on it. Then she told him that writing names on bullets was no way to go through life."
Let me introduce you to a book you'll be dying to read...
As many of you may be aware, I simply adore all things mythology - especially ancient Egyptian mythology.
So when I was given the opportunity to read & review Jane Unwrapped by Leah and Kate Rooper I just knew that it was the kind of book that I would fall instantly in love with. And I was right! Two pages in and I was already tuning out the outside world, perfectly content to sit down all day with a book that had gripped me with its brilliant characters and unique plot.
It's female protagonist, Jane, was witty, conflicted, and the kind of girl I instantly knew I'd be friends with in real life. Her love of science and quirky facts brought life to the story, making her more than just your average heroine. Her character development shocked me with its rapid but well-thought-out pace - she faced many challenges but emerged triumphant, wearing her emotional and physical scars proudly.
And the book's male protagonist was just as amazing...deadly amazing! Yes, yes, I was very tempted to include a whole array of death puns when discussing the hottie that is Anubis, but I will restrain myself ;)
The Rooper sisters' Anubis is by far one of the best adaptions of a mythological persona I have come across. Anubis was just the right blend of clueless, stoic, and self-righteous ancient god mixed with the adorableness, good looks and sly humour of a YA bad boy. The chemistry between him and Jane was off the charts! They helped each other grow and become better versions of themselves, challenged one another, and made great friends long before romance blossomed.
If you love comedy, romance, time-travelling, and mythology...Jane Unwrapped is definitely for you!...more

'Something remains in the silence after a performance. It echoes between the seats, winding through aisles and rows, whispering as it returns to the front of the hall. The stage remembers. Its polished floor pulses with the heartbeat of every musician who has crossed it and holds within its infinite memory that which murmurs endlessly in silence. Power. The same power pulsating in the thick blood now flowing across the pale wood and pooling around the podium. This sacred ground siphons away an artist's life, ingesting ambition and arrogance, and devouring countless dreams of immortality so that it can satiate a voracious audience. The stage demands to be fed. When you step on it, you become the willing sacrifice.'
Poignant and edgy, Breaking Measures takes contemporary fiction to the next level.
Emma Raveling's writing has always been a stunning example of how an author can reel in their readers from the very first word. And Breaking Measures is no exception. In fact, it builds on Raveling's ability to entertain readers by adding a bundle of mystery and suspense that will keep readers on the edge of their seat...and looking over their shoulders to check that a mass murderer hasn't snuck into their houses!
Sprinkled with delicious descriptions of the main protagonist Leila Cates' music career and her love for her art, this novel is utterly captivating from start to finish. Examples of these beautifully crafted descriptions include:
'Leila retreated to the piano, hands trembling at the life spinning out of their control. She pushed the metronome, the precise tick reminding her of measures and boundaries. Now that Orion was gone, the frantic presto pulse no longer seemed right. She adjusted the speed, reducing it to an ominous adagio that boomed like thunder in her chest.'
And another one of my faves:
'People wanted to see her triumph over grief and become the bloodied gladiator standing alone in the arena. The stage demanded a moving display of grit and tenacity, a story about an inspiring comeback despite tragic suffering. Leila was now the headliner in a performance selling the American Dream. The only way to extinguish the sordidness of murder was with a spectacular performance that would be remembered for the ages, a concert that would become an immortal part of her legacy.'
This book is highly recommended for readers who love to read well-written books.
Love books where it feels like every word, every sentence, has been chosen and put together with the utmost care and attention? Do you love books that make you feel invested in their mysterious events, and that urge you to join in on the journey to discover the truth?
Then Breaking Measures is most definitely for you! ...more

At first it seemed like this was just going to be another 'fearless assassin/This book made me a little emotional...
Okay - very emotional!
At first it seemed like this was just going to be another 'fearless assassin/thief-like female clashes with a guy she ends up with' book.
But To Stand Beside Her surprised me in so many ways.
The witty banter, of course, got me hooked:
'"I am guessing I can answer your questions just as well as he could." "Okay," Nalick responded, taking the bait, "Are you the woman that I should marry?"
"Probably, but it is not going to happen," Leila responded.
(...)"And why not?" he inquired. "Because in order to have a real marriage, both people need to be willing to marry each other." Leila looked him up and down. He was handsome, but he was also an arrogant jerk. "I am not willing to marry you."'
And then there was the character of Nalick.
He didn't miraculously transform into a knight in shining armor. Instead, B. Kristin McMichael reveals Nalick's many layers as the story unfolds, slowly but surely securing him a place in our hearts...and Leila's ;)
The only thing I couldn't get on board with? The ending.
I get it, authors, I do - you want shock value! Even if it breaks our bookworm hearts in the process...*stares pointedly at Veronica Roth*
But something just didn't feel right about this ending. Poor Leila goes through hell and back when it comes to her love life. And just when she thinks it's all gonna be rainbows, kittens, and sunshine...some stupid seer stuffs up everything. We're left with an Epilogue that sends you into a whirlpool of emotion without a life raft. It's truly a bittersweet ending...and call me spoiled, call me naive...but I wanted a happy ending!!
Instead I got an ending that guarantees that I'll be sobbing at the mention of true love for at least two weeks straight!

Never before have I been so immersed in a graphic novel!
The quality of the illustrations is phenomenal - I cannot find the words to describe how amazing they are. The novel includes a motley bunch of characters who you'll grow to know and love, along with an awe-inspiring use of colours and perspectives
The image-style was also a lot maturer than the one used for the original series Teen Titans, which was nice to see. It wasn't as cheesy...not that there's anything wrong with cheesy!
And the ending was - you guessed it! - a total cliffhanger.
Because nowadays no book, comic, TV show, or movie is complete without a lovely twist ending thrown in to make you want the next book even more!

Ever wondered what guys secretly mean by their words and actions? Greg gives a man's perspective on life, love and dating that is certainly an eye-opener for females. But the highlight of this book has to be Greg's overall message: that if he's just not that into you...then it's his loss. Because you're smart, sassy, and beautiful just the way you are :)

'It wasn't the odd sketches of people with their eyes and faces and mouths scratched out, it wasn't the odd and dark poems, it was one phrase.
Put me out of my misery.
Scrawled over and over, filling up two complete pages. I've watched him like a hawk ever since. He smiles now, encouraging me to forget it, like it's just his outlet. He's fine now.
He's fine.
If I had a journal, I'd scrawl that on the pages, over and over, to make it true.'
Sometimes two halves don't make a whole.

From showing them Finn's private journal and the terrible things scrawled between its pages.
She's his protector, his friend, his conscience. But can she save him from himself? Or will he drag her down with him?

But he also has the ability to destroy her.
You can only run from your past for so long. And as Dare's past starts to catch up with him, Calla will be forced to decide between loving Dare, or saving Finn.
Secrets...everyone's got 'em.
Laced with bitter truths and terrible secrets, Nocte is an addictive NA blend of thriller and mystery elements. Be prepared for a book that will lure you in, make you question everything, and then turn everything you think you know inside-out!
My thoughts on the book:
First off, I just want to say this was definitely one of the stand-out reads of 2014.
I finished it in one sitting and could not put it down! It had me hooked from the first page. And that is the mark of a truly well-written book.
And that twist...oh that twist!
For those of you who want to know what that twist was, I will offer a small hint. It was a darker version of the twist from Flat-Out Love by Jessica Park. And, funnily enough, just like Flat-Out Love I did not see it coming! I was in a state of total shock!!
As for the dark and handsome Dare DuBray...let's just say that all fangirls should be prepared to add Monsieur DuBray to their fictional crush list!
Not only is he totally smexy (and he knows it!) but Dare is also a massive sweetheart. Aaaaaand he's got a British accent *cue the squeals of a thousand fangirls*.
My fave part, however, was not Mr. British Accent. It was Finn's story that he read in a book called Chicken Soup for the Grieving Soul. It's a tale about the afterlife, and it was just so beautiful that I thought I'd share it with all of you:
'Once upon a time, there was a colony of water bugs. They were a close colony, a family. Where one went, the others went.
But every so often, one would straggle away on their own, crawl onto a lily pad, and never return. This was a great mystery to the family of water bugs. They couldn't figure out what was happening to their family members, of why they disappeared. They talked about it often, and worried about it, but they could never figure it out.
Well, one day, another water bug climbed onto the lily pad, drawn there by invisible forces from within itself, forces it didn't understand and couldn't control. As it sat there in the sun, it transformed into a beautiful dragonfly. It shed its water bug skin, and sprouted iridescent wings that gleamed in the sunlight. Wings so large and strong, it was able to fly into the air, doing loops in the sky.
The new dragonfly was ecstatic with it's new body and thought to itself, 'I need to go back and tell the other. They need to know that this is what happens so they won't be scared.' So he dipped and dove through the air, directly at the water.
But unfortunately, he couldn't dive below the surface to where the water-bugs were swimming. In his new form, the dragonfly was no longer able to communicate with his family. He felt at peace, though, because he knew that someday, his family would all transform too, and they'd all be together again.'
This book was an amazing read. I'm so, so happy I made the decision to pick it up and give it a read. And I hope you all get the chance to read Nocte sometime soon and experience its magic for yourselves :) ...more
I know what you're thinking: "Oh boy...another book on mythology."
Because let's face it...mythology has become what vampires became after TI know what you're thinking: "Oh boy...another book on mythology."
Because let's face it...mythology has become what vampires became after Twilight. Overused, poorly represented, and with added sparkles. And no one wants sparkly myths or vampires.
Mythology is meant to be appreciated in its raw form. Cory O'Brien points out that today's mythologists (ah...that's probably not a word, but oh well!) are far too concerned with dissecting myths, and should instead enjoy them for what they are.
'Anybody who complains that a retelling of a myth is 'inaccurate' doesn't really understand what it means to retell a myth, or probably even what a myth is.
(...) Everybody's always studying them in school or reading watered-down version of them to little kids, and what that means is that hardly anybody has the time to actually sit down and look at how f***ing funny these things are.
Myths are hilarious, as Cory points out. I mean...have you looked at some of these myths?! They're filled with outlandish ideas, disgusting feats, bad parenting, and questionable characters.
Cory starts off with Greek myths. And straight off the bat, you can tell that Cory's retellings are going to comedic to say the least!
'Uranus suddenly decides he hates all of the kids and intead of like, giving them up for adoption or something, he just decides to try and stuff them all back into his wife like "THESE ARE NOT THE BABIES I ORDERED I AM RETURNING THEM TO THE BABYSTORE."
Which I think demonstrates a really shocking lack of understanding of how babies are made.
(...)Cronus comes up with a more sensible alternative which is to stuff all his kids into his stomach.
(...)So the moral of the story is that if you are not ready to be a father, consider all of your options before skipping directly to cannibalism.'
And the descriptions are just so perfect that they will bring tears (of laughter) to your eyes.
'Narcissus is gorgeous. Like, imagine if someone could look exactly like bacon tastes and you have a pretty good picture of Narcissus (unless you're a vegetarian).'
This book also provides an insight into the tactfulness of the gods.
'Hades is down in the underworld and he looks up one day and sees her (Persephone) and he goes "Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayum. I gotta get me some of that."
So he just pops on up to the world in his black chariot of ultimate wretchedness and he says, "Hey, little girl, do you want to come to hell?" And she probably would have said no, only he kidnapped her.
Basically Hades is the ultimate ladies' man.'
But the best bit is the moral of the 'Persephone gets stuck with Hades 'cause of pomegranates' tale.
'So the moral of this story is once again for the gentlemen: Gentlemen, learn to cook one home-cooked meal, and BAM - she will be trapped inside of your house forever, or for half of the year if she has a good lawyer.'
Let me also just say that this book really makes you appreciate your parents. I mean...Zeus and Hera threw Hephaestus off Mount Olympus because he was ugly - and only let him come back once he showed them he could make nice jewellery. I'm pretty sure the Olympians created a whole new parenting category titled 'Uninvolved and relative abusive (unless gifts are involved)'.
Not that the Norse are any better. Between selling off their women, tying up their offspring, and stealing each other's stuff, they're a bit of a motley bunch of misfits. As for Odin...he's not getting the Father Of The Year award anytime soon!
Some other things about this book you may find intriguing: - Orpheus is the ultimate emo symphony composer - Zeus cannot seduce women when Linkin Park is playing in the background - Fenrir inspired motivational posters with his spit - Swedish trivial pursuit involves bloodshed - In the event of an apocalypse, head towards the invincible forest...not the blood-drenched battlefield - According to Egyptian mythology, we are all descended from spit and puke - Isis invented Jenga
Basically, this book is just pure gold. Just be prepared for unedited, swear-word-decorated myths and lots and lots of laughs!
