However, I’m sensing that Virginia Woolf is a precious relic of the 20th century. Reminds me of the deflowering of Winston Churchill, the greatest British statesman of the 20th century. When multiculturalism and institutional racism reframe our world view in the 21st, is the angst of the British Aristocracy, which Woolf microscopically details, fundamental to the human condition as all great literature details? I went on to read Jacob’s Room, and Mrs Dalloway, and the Waves. I’m still wondering. ...more

Never got the concept about one day. The movie, The Hours, with its stellar cast of Meryl Streep, Ed Harris, Julianne Moore, Clare Danes, Allison Janey, and Nicole Kidman as Virginia Woolf, a role for which she won Academy Award, prompted me to read again. I also have tickets for the Metropolitan Opera production of The Hours with Renee Fleming and Kelli O’Hara. However many iterations, the book sent me into a trance, with my mind racing over the page trying to grab the meaning of each and every word that threatened to elude my grasp. Finishing the book left me with a sense of loss. ...more

I can't include certain thoughts on the book without risking being thrown off Goodreads. Let's say that I couldn't put it down; it was an obsession captured as I was by the soaring prose that bordered on pure poetry. Conrad does that for me. For example, at the sight of his obsession on deck, Captain Linguard, observed,
..."Mrs. Travers rose nervously and going aft began to gaze at the coast. Behind her the sun, sunk already, seemed to force through the mass of waters the glow of an unextinguishable fire, and below her feet, on each side of the yacht, the lustrous sea, as if reflecting the colour of her eyes, was tinged a sombre violet hue." p.217
Who can resist? For a minute, I thought I was still reading Faust, a book I can't finish but keep reading captivated by the poetry without following the story.
It is an acquired taste. The Rescue is an advanced placement novel i.e., I wouldn't dive into Conrad -if you pardon the expression - with this book; you could drown in the words. Start with the Heart of Darkness or Nostromo....more

As a physical science novice, I found his explanations of laws of thermodynamics understandable. Still don’t understand inflationary gravity and a few other concepts, however. He gushes over the potential for mathematics and physics eventually explaining the origin of life. He loses me here: maybe it will happen, but I won’t be one who will understand the explanation…the math and science will be beyond me.
I loved his discussion of the discovery of the Higgs boson and Higgs field. What a thrill it must have been for the particle physicists. I still don’t understand what particle accelerators do; but after reading Prof Greenie’s explanation, I don’t understand it a little bit better. ...more

The battle of disparate relief organizations promoting containment of infection through isolating the infected rather than providing patient care is pertinent today as we battle COVID. We in the developed rich world have the luxury of contact tracing, isolation along with treating the sick. Farmer needed an editor. The book goes on and on revisiting the same issues. But you are obligated to pay attention….think about Haiti....more
