Another great novel with Harry and Renee! I was looking forward to seeing Renee and Harry opening their own PI business, after Renee quit LAPD. Alas, Renee goes back to head a cold case squad. At first I was just as huffy as Harry was, but then I got into the cold cases. I did see some things coming, but Connelly always keeps things suspenseful. One thing that made it hard to read this series is knowing that Harry probably won't last for too long. I cannot imagine it, and refuse to do so until I have to face it. ...more

If you enjoyed the YA novel A Good Girl's Guide to Murder you will like this one. While this is for an adult audience, it does take place at a college and with younger characters. I think older teens would be okay to read this one. The Sorority Murder is another novel using a true crime podcast as a plot device. I listen to many true crime podcasts as I work, so I enjoy reading books that include this in them. There was a novel, the title escapes me, that I didn't think worked as well, but I liked this one. I thought this was a standalone novel when I first started this book, and then realized it's a first book in a series. The amount of background information given about the main character, Regan was a bit much and vague if it was for just one book. I am looking forward to learn more about Regan as the series progresses. I do enjoy her father as a secondary character and hope there is more of him. The murder in this book was interesting but didn't have any suspense for me. I won't say led me to it, in case I ruin it for others like me.

The review blurb on the cover of this book is from Karin Slaughter so you KNOW I am going to add this to my TBR without even reading the synopsis. While the ending was a bit too easy to figure out, the characters and story kept me glued. This is the debut novel by Stacy Willingham, and I can see the potential of each book growing. Anytime an author can make me invested in unlikable or and/or annoying characters, that is a win. This is a great novel to throw in your bag to head down to the beach, or the deck (in my case). I am downing for the next Willingham book. Thanks to Slaughter for leading me to a great read.

Couple Found Slain is part true crime and part biography in a psych ward. Murder is only the beginning of this booRATING: 3 STARS 2021; Macmillan Audio
Couple Found Slain is part true crime and part biography in a psych ward. Murder is only the beginning of this book. Occasionally, a murderer is found criminally insane, but what does that really mean and what happens after the diagnosis? In 1992, Brian Bechtold murders his parents, and blames the devil. He is believed and diagnosis with schizophrenia. He is put in a maximum security psychiatric hospital but is kind of left in limbo. While he is being treated with medication, it does not seem to be going anywhere. He is not taught how to manage or how this will affect him in the long term. He will be released when he is "sane" but there is no concrete guidelines for that. There have been cases where patients would rather murder someone to be put in prison so they have some kind of freedom. With diminished responsibility, also come diminished autonomy. Much like prison, it seems like people are put on the shelf instead of actually providing reformative justice. I do not claim to know the answers, or that there is anything better. I do know that this was just heartbreaking to read. Sometimes the book does drag and and I didn't always agree with the author on things. I am glad I read this one.

RATING: 3.5 STARS 2021; Blackstone Publishing & Audio Narrated by Joe Kenda
If you enjoy watching Homicide Hunter: Lt. Joe Kenda, true crime documentary RATING: 3.5 STARS 2021; Blackstone Publishing & Audio Narrated by Joe Kenda
If you enjoy watching Homicide Hunter: Lt. Joe Kenda, true crime documentary show, you will love this book. The audiobook is read by Kenda, which really enriches the book. I read his last book, I Will Find You: Killer Cases from My Life in Crime and enjoyed it I could hear his voice in my head. BUT listening to this one on audio hearing his actual wry voice just makes it so much better. I Will Find You is more of his memoir on how he became a homicide detective; Killer Triggers is more about the cases on his show. Kenda often says there are only so many motives for murder, and this book demonstrates them. I would recommend watching a few episodes of Homicide Hunter as it will add your enjoyment of this book.

I loved Magpie Murders, but when I heard there was going to be a sequel, it was a bittersweet moment. I wanted more stories of Atticus Pund, but I was not sure how Susan Ryeland would play into it. The novel within the novel, does not come till later, but as I read it I found myself uneasy. Was Horowitz's Pund a satire or a homage to the Golden Age of Mystery? I also wasn't that crazy about the story in the present day with Susan. I just wasn't into the mystery about what happened to Cecily, and forgot about the story when I was reading the novel with Pund. I like the novel within a novel, but both felt too long. I really felt every page this time. I would definitely read another Ryeland novel.
