I do not think an adaptation should be exactly similar to the source material, and creative liberties can build on it. But the creative directions chosen for this one just in my opinion just ruins and dumbs it down. (Or maybe I shouldn't judge it too harshly on just a few minutes and actually watch it). Unpopular opinion time: This book is okay. It's not bad but it's not great either.
This book follows Circe a lower God/nymph exiled to an island all by herself. This a character driven book; and I don't hate character driven books, except that Circe's character is kind of bland so I didn't care for it much. It feels like biography about the Greek goddess Circe and I didn't want to read a biography. It's like the author made a list of events that she has to cover and well she did it.
Madeline Miller's writing is very beautiful though I mean it does feel like just paraphrasing Greek history but in italics. Also the audiobook is absolutely chef's kiss. Perdita Weeks adds the much needed more passion more energy to it. And this would've been a 2 star read without her...more
