She has so much spunk and charm. And the family—the family! Every character in this big cast has so much heart, and by the end, I felt like I knew each one of them. Like so many great children's books, ORPHAN ISLAND deals with letting go of childhood and moving on to the next stage of life, and it does so beautifully. This is a story that sticks with you....more

Ali Standish writes with such strength and honesty that we experience all those emotions along with the characters. The story feels so real, and I may or may not have cried (um, more than once). I'd recommend this to any middle grade reader....more
