It was one of those stories where everything was just enough to be okay, but nothing was more than just "okay to goodish". Nothing was memorable other than how avocados were featured. I did find the scientific stuff interesting and it added to the story for me, but I could see how some might find it tedious.
There were 2 things I found a relief: one was that the brother was not up to nefarious deeds. The other was that there was not a whole lot of whiny dithering about the relationship progressing, instead the bodyguard informs his team as needed and removes himself from payroll for this job. He was decisive and straightforward as a bodyguard, team leader, and owner should always be (especially in that field).
I am a fan of this author, and I will definitely continue to read her works even if this was not my favorite. It was still a very solid read. ...more

There was just enough world building to move the story along, but not to "sink into it" because it could be imagined in one's mind. The concept will be memorable, unfortunately the story was just good, not great; nor does anything make me want to continue reading the series. I liked it. It was surfacely engaging. The m/c's are not your typical "heroes" by any stretch. One team mate turned enemy also wasn't a typical enemy. There were Their relationships multi-layered and so complicated. Heartbreaking.
The intensity has been relentless and nothing comes easy nor does it often go right. I could actually feel the pressure building as the team and especially Dom are slowly squeezed like a vice from nearly all sides with no let up.
The characters are clearly unique from one another and not just 2 dimensional. The story action packed and moves at an engaging clip. The writing is strong and fluid.
There are deaths throughout of people that are not just the bad guys which I'm not a fan of, but it did add to and/or propel the story forward. There was a surprising twist in this last book. It was not a light easy book but worth it. Plus, Everything is wrapped up nicely....more

In full disclosure, if the next book in the series was not out already - I would not have been happy. This ended on a hard cliffhanger which I truly despise. They make me feel cheated, but I did feel this still deserved 4 stars.
The world is well developed as are the characters (who continue to be fleshed out and grow).

I'm glad that my 1st experience with this new world had the 1st few stories bundled together. I think it really helped. I struggled through these stories at first. The world building was slow in coming. I spent a lot of time not quite understanding the world or what was going on (as in why things were the way they were). It effected my enjoyment. Part of it also could have been that it was such a departure from what I expected from this author, but it is a style I typically enjoy.
There were plenty of good things. I loved the m/c's and the unique twists of this new world she created - especially as more of "how it worked" became clear. The stories were different though with a similar theme.
It was worth reading, but not engaging enough that I plan on continuing it at this time. ...more

There are few series 6 books in that have been a solid as this one - even including book 5's departure from the norm.
So... I feel by the 6th book in a series, you either like or have adjusted to a writers style. It is either that or you have stopped reading somewhere along the way. In the previous books, I've often gotten lost in all the author's verbiage - which effected the flow for me. This time, I either had adjusted better or it was less of an issue. Only once or twice do I remember going back to pick up the start of a conversation - due to all the verbiage in between.
Sometimes I felt too many things were left up in the air and never addressed. Just one example would be the status of peripheral characters injured in the crossfire. This time, at least, we were given enough of an indication that the bodyguard would eventually be okay. I would have liked a little more but was relieved to at least get that. (He had a pivotal scene with Miki. We were told he had a husband and kids. In a perfect world, I would have like to have seen him with his family at the wedding). I still would like to know that Quinn's friend from the college was alive and okay from a couple of books back.
I definitely feel how the mystery / suspense portion played out was more intriguing. All of it was just more solid and better overall.
I love seeing the band and the Morgan's+ all together. It was also good to see Miki getting mentally healthier and answers to his past. The growth of his character was long and hard. That might be best part of all. It was amazing the things revealed and how they came about so long ago. The author did a great job connecting dots that had it all falling into place. How he ended up on the street and what no one ever came forward.
This, by far, was the smoothest and most intriguing read of the series for me; all wrapped up in a satisfying HEA. I loved these characters, and I'm glad I read this series. (I'm also glad I read them all together, and I did not have the long 2 year wait between books 5 and 6.)
I'm not sure how this would read as a stand alone, but I strongly feel the first in the series (at least) should be read prior to reading this one. I definitely recommend giving this series a shot.

"Brain candy' does not necessarily carry a negative connotation in my reviews. It has its uses; to pass time whet tired, on the beach, etc... The problem is when I'm expecting a novel and I get fluff. (What is brain candy? Pure entertainment; It may be formulaic, from an author published quickly like monthly, things escalate fast, and are often solved easily etc.. Publishing industries version of pop music). 3. Blurb rating purpose: Like many readers, I do not like to think I'm reading one kind of story; just to end up with another. But...I also don't think a book should be docked stars for being as stated. If I don't like stories about "_________", and I choose to read it. I shouldn't give it 2 stars based JUST on my preferences. Unless... it wasn't clear in the blurb. 4. Other Factors that effect my perspective when reviewing: Since 2009, I have exclusively read m/m. My 1st was in 2007. I am a Kindle diehard, and I never do audio for m/m. I read at least 100+ books a year - with an average length of 220± pages; but the total number of books is usually much higher. My Goodreads lifetime rating (at the start of 2021) was a 3.64 average for 1527 books. Which considering, one should be better at picking out books the more one reads, I feel is an accurate average. I have over 795 reviews within the m/m genre here on Goodreads.
