Maybe I'm just finally aging out of YA novels, but this was the first book in awhile where I could feel the author(s) straining to be relevant, hip anMaybe I'm just finally aging out of YA novels, but this was the first book in awhile where I could feel the author(s) straining to be relevant, hip and in-the-know regarding its young audience. It felt at times like your mom using the latest slang and wearing teenage clothes as she poorly attempted to be cool in your and your friends' eyes.
The book was funny at times, but also felt like it was trying too hard to be funny. The joke density is high but some of the jokes aren't that good and the high density means there's less space for build up in between jokes.
The main character also got on my nerves a few times-- some of her jibes against her friend's (vampire) boyfriend were really rude and intolerable for me. At least she eventually got called on it and the effects on her friendships became natural sources for conflict.
What saved the novel for me (worth that extra star) is why I'm grateful non-YA people write YA books. Because, despite being less and less able to relate to teens, they are able to give teens some much needed perspective. The authors were able to say, "I know at the time that this seemed to be the end of the world and it was exhilarating and scary and all of these things... but at the end of the day, it all worked out just fine." They said it beautifully. TEAM HUMAN's climax was touching and made me tear up and I never tear up at stuff like this. It was beautiful and I look forward to TEAM HUMAN 2....more
