I don't know what I was expecting but this novel ended up surprising me in a good way and in a bad way. Everything felt rushed and that's coming from someone who has DNFed quite a few series by this author because the writing was too descriptive and the plot very slow moving.
Lexi was entertaining in this book, I'll give her that, but that's about it. Her sense of humor is great and her protective nature toward her wards is so sweet to see but I still have a problem with the amount of power she can wield with, what still seems to be, minimal training, up to this point. Her relationship with Kieran is interesting with all the power and bonding thing they have going on.
Kieran seems to trust Lexi more and I actually started to like him better in this book. He's still protective of her but now he knows that she can somewhat take care of herself. I liked how he backed off and let her breathe on her own.
The ending was interesting! The big battle is what the past two books have been gearing up for and it was action-packed. I'd like to see what the next big-bad is and how they're going to solve it in future novels in the series and deal with their relationship at the same time.
The Audio Book:
The audio book was OK. I can only listen to Khristine Hvam while sped up to 1.25x. Her narration is good but I like to set a faster pace for authors that I know have naturally descriptive writing. She has a nice range of male and female voices with and without accents....more

I may be biased but this is the best book in the series so far! I've been on Team Erza since the beginning and this book finally gave us a look into why he is how he is and so much more. For that alone, I consider this the best book to date in this series!
Now that I've gotten the fangirling out of the way, let's talk about the story. I can agree with a lot of other reviewers when they say Tori was in the background for the first half of this story, but it didn't bother me. She's human, she hasn't been training in any fighting style for most of her life like the warriors in the guild have. Unless we want her to get killed early on in the series I'm happy to let her take a step back every now and then.
I love how the author built this story up and organically introduced the main character for the spin-off series that will be intertwined with this one. I'm very curious about the new heroine and all the trouble she gets into with her demon companion.
The guys were awesome as always, especially Erza! I want to know more about his background and why he thought he had no other option than to become what he became.
The ending wasn't something I was expecting but it does make a lot of sense for the spin-off series to belong to the same guild. It'd be really interesting see how the author flips the demons-are-bad ideology this series has set up with the spin-off probably having one as a main character.

This novel started off good but by the middle it started dragging on. There's only so much a secondary character can do to keep me interested in the story. If it wasn't for the narrator this novel would have probably ended as my first DNF of 2019.
Alexis has a great sense of humor, but what came off as an ability to drive people in circles and make them believe things were moving in the right direction turned into being dragged along into dangerous situations and solving things by pure chance and coincidence. I also hate how "untrained" she is but everything comes to her SO easy or by pure chance. I also don't understand why she loses her ability to think like a rational human being when Kieran is around. It was cute in the beginning. We've moved past that by now. She's lost her shine and I don't know if I want to go through all this again in a future book for this series.
Kieran was something in this novel alright. I don't get the appeal to him. He's domineering, controlling and expects everyone to jump when he says jump. I also remember (from the audio book) towards the end that he says something along the lines of hearing the word no from Alexis only excites him farther. That's not a sentence I ever want to hear from anyone, ever.
Daisy was the bright star in this novel! I want to read about her story, without having to deal with Alexis and Kieran. Mordecai didn't play a huge part in the book but I would also love to get his story sometime in the future. Heck, I'll even take reading about Kieran's Six and how they eventually get their happy endings. Alexis and Kieran just aren't doing it for me.
Overall, I'm not sure I want to know more about this series. The world the author created feels huge and intricate but the characters aren't helping keep me invested in it.
The Audio Book:
The audio book narration was great! I could differentiate all the characters and didn't get lost in any dialogue. It was overall relaxing and probably one of the reasons I finished reading this novel in the first place....more

I've tried and failed to read through quite a few books by this author. The stories and concepts she writes about are amazing but the writing style isn't for me. Her stories tend to be more on the description side with a slow and steady pace to everything. With determination, I overcame that for this story.
The overall story is very interesting! The world the author created feels big and ominous. The stakes feel real enough to drive the characters along without it feeling forced.
I like Alexis' sense of humor. She has the uncanny ability to drive people in circles all the while convincing them they're going in a straight line. Though the swear words disguised as silly phrases didn't really mesh with what was presented. It gets even stranger because her wards swear more than her.
I love to hate Kieran. He's just the right amount of caring and vulnerable to offset how creepy, stalkerish and domineering he can be. There were moments I wanted him to burn in a lake of fire but then he'd say something sweet or *gasp* apologize for something that he did. I just don't know what to think of him at this point in time.
I usually stay away from novels that have kids in them. I consider Malachi and Daisy children regardless of how old they are because they are in the care of Alexis. What ended up surprising me was how much I liked Malachi. I still want to know what ends up happening to him and his situation. Daisy's antics were also fun to listen to. If this series doesn't end up presenting a happily ever after for them I would love to get a spin-off series.
Overall this novel was only the tip of a very slow melting iceberg. There were a few really good moments and a lot of filler (for my taste). I'd like to know what happens next with Alexis and her team of misfits.

This book was infuriating. It started off quite nicely and the overall concept and plot proved to be very interesting. That was about where anything good about this book died. The heroine had never-ending repetitive inner monologues. She never makes up her mind about anything. Everything is over-explained which made for an action-packed story that dragged on and on and on with barely anything happening. I wanted the annoying ex-boyfriend to be killed in a fire by hour 2 of the audio book. He did nothing but pressure and try to "assert his dominance" on the heroine which was VERY annoying. The best part of the whole situation, you ask? Well turns out the heroine can't make up her mind about him either!...more

This series is slowly starting to get better, but it's still barely averaging out as what I would consider a 3 star story. I appreciate how much bigger the world the author created is becoming but it still feels like something is missing somehow.
Mina still has the personality of a wall. Things seem to bounce off her because of how dense she is. Until she has an ah-ha moment and goes after/does whatever it is she intends to do. Though I will say that her conversations/disagreements with Dorian were the closest she ever come to having an interesting personality.
The love triangle seems to be over but I feel like I need to call BS or something. It was resolved WAY too easily and with no apparent consequences. The guy who "lost" almost seemed to have the ability to read minds or see the future. He was calm in an icky way (if that makes sense) and it's still making me apprehensive.
Eli was great as always! I like how he can joke around with Mina and still be serious and command authority when needed. The bet they have is also very adorable and(view spoiler)[ I'm somewhat invested in their story now. (hide spoiler)]
I was SO glad to see almost nothing of Alec in this story. I despise the kid. Even more so now with the revelation of what his uncle did/does(?). He does nothing for this story or Mina. There doesn't seem to be all this chemistry Mina keeps talking about between them. It almost feels like wishful thinking of both their parts.
The mystery Mina and Eli have been trying to solve gets a few revelations in this novel. It's not much but it's a start. I think their plan going forward is ludicrous. Though I'm still invested in this series, it feels more like a trainwreck that I can't look away from at this point.
Overall this series and its characters are getting easier to read about because I'm somewhat invested in the mystery that's been presented.

This was the most action-packed and fast-paced adventure yet! That was probably due to the circumstances Tori found herself in but it was amazing none the less! Tori continues to be her snarky and sassy self in this story. She also has an astonishing amount of things go wrong and work in her favor at the same time. I also loved how she's finally found her second family!
The guys were awesome as always! Zak still stood out in this novel even with everything that was going on. He's growing on me. I hope we see him in a future novel. I'm still firmly on team Erza. I just want to know more about him and his secrets. We've gotten to know all the other guys in different ways. Erza needs his turn!
I loved the ending! I also loved how the author finally made Tori kinda-sorta official (I can't say more than that because it's a huge spoiler). I also laughed out loud when the Zak plot twist was revealed! I can't wait for their next adventure!

Throughout this book, I was lukewarm at best until the crap finally hit the fan in the last few chapters. Things changed drastically in those last few chapters. I don't know what I was expecting to make me not love the beginning and middle of this novel. Maybe it was the amnesia plotline that made me take a step back and reconsider because I dislike it in general regardless of the book or author it's written by.
Veritas is slowly winning me over. I got off on the wrong foot with her in the last book in Vlad's series and even though the first book in this series blew me away I was still iffy about her. Though I can't deny the chemistry she and Ian have and don't even get me started on how much I adore all the witty banter and sexual innuendo-laden humor. She's strong and protective of what she loves and that includes Silver (which is too adorable to harm! Please may the writer gods protect the beautiful and innocent creature!)
Ian has proven himself to be time and time again an amazing and protective guy to a degree. He may come off as the bad guy depending on if what he wants will affect the other person or not. I like how bloodthirsty he is when it comes to protecting Veritas. It's sweet in a very disturbing and creepy way because he's a vampire... duh.
I didn't know what to expect from the next book in the series before the very last chapter and boy am I ready! That wasn't even on my mind and it was a perfect way to end this book. Things were resolved enough where it felt like a good stopping point while at the same time casting out future storylines that will come to pass. I wasn't mad at this ending and I'm so glad the amnesia thing is over and done with at this point.

My problem with those novels was always one character (Layla) and not the overall story because I ended up loving this novel. Even though it was more on the slow end of the spectrum it made for a fascinating journey!
The new heroine Trinity has a much better head on her shoulders. Maybe it's because she's 18 and more "mature". All I can tell you is that I gravitated towards her as a character. She fights for what she believes is the right choice, doesn't attract drama like the plague and *bonus* knows how to talk things out like an adult without whining or throwing a fit.
Zayn was very toned down from what I remember him being in the Dark Elements trilogy. Though that's probably my fault because I just couldn't take the drama Layla was causing and skipped the third book altogether. From what I pieced together from the information provided in this story I have a very vague idea of what happened to him and it makes that third book sound amazing, if only it weren't for Layla... Anyway, Zayn was very responsible and has matured quite well. He has a temper but is still respectful enough to let things go and converse about it later on.
Roth was a fantastic part of this book! Without Layla being present and the drama she brings with her, I really enjoy his personality! The more I think about it the more I realize that I disliked Layla not the story or the universe the author built in the Dark Elements series.
The twist at the end was like a knife twisting in my heart! Trinity and Zayn just found each other and now this happens. I want to know more about their protector bond and how they're going to deal with the consequences of having it and their possible blossoming relationship (maybe I'm being too hopeful!). Here's to a year-long wait!

I didn't dislike the narration but I think a different narrator should have been chosen. Lauren Fortgang has a decent range of male and female voices but she can only go so far. I love Tori's sense of humor and how sassy she is even in inappropriate moments. The backbone she's sporting makes her one heck of an interesting character as well. All that being said, I also have soft spot for her. Especially now after learning a little more about her past in this book. I will admit that Tori made a lot of idiotic and life endangering decisions on a whim in this story but it didn't feel out of character for her (as strange as that may sound coming from someone who abhors dumb decisions main characters seem to love to make).
I'm having trouble telling the three mages apart. The only one I automatically think of is Erza and that's because I'm rooting for him to somehow have a permanent thing with Tori. It's looking like a long shot if you're only considering this novel but I'm still hopeful... to a degree.
Is it bad that I kind of want a side story/spin-off series/novella on Ghost and his possibility at a happy ending? He's won me over enough that I want to get to know him when he's in his element and with someone he trusts.
Even though I rated this book 5 stars I will say I missed the little bit of romance, that the first book in this series had, in this one. I'm a lover of the romance genre at heart so even though I understand this is an urban fantasy novel I still wanted more development in that department. I can also admit that the overall adventure was awesome!

I don't know why, but I simply couldn't connect with anything or any character in this novel. This book features a good well-paced story with somewhat interesting characters. It felt like something didn't click between me and this story.
Danica was a headstrong woman who knew what she wanted from the start. She was used to drawing a line in the sand and having people respect that. The "mystery" she was involved in was very janky and not set up all that well throughout the story. I liked her dynamic and eventual relationship with Zed.
Zed was a sweet and caring guy. It was a nice change of pace compared to the last few books I've read. Character's like him are few and far between, especially when most novels feature "alpha" douche bags as the hero. I loved how he respected her space but at the same time was straightforward about what he was looking for/wanted and how they could compromise.
The ending was sweet and predictable (which wasn't a bad thing for this story). I would have liked the secondary characters to have been more memorable and to play a bigger part in the story.
The Audio Book:
I disliked Jonathan Davis's voice for Zed on SO many levels. At times he made it hard to understand him in basic conversations. Amanda Ronconi chapters were fine as far as understanding what the characters were saying. The good news: This book was better than the first book. The bad news: Not by much. The story did a much better job at keeping me intrigued and moved along at a nice pace. The main character, however, just dragged everything down with her.
Mina seems to be getting worse. She over complicates things that shouldn't require all that much to deal with. Mina is unreasonably overprotective of her sister but only knows how to bad mouth her when she gets a puppy. Mina second guesses her so-called relationship with Alec but can't bring herself to step back and evaluate her feelings for Eli. Mina has proven to be dense and too stupid to live at this point.
Eli was great in this novel. He was the perfect amount of understanding and caring towards Mina. When things hit the fan he's there taking charge to deal with it. At this point, I think he'd be better off without her.
I still dislike Alec. A few of his friends are creeps and he still hangs around them. He doesn't mesh with the paranormal side to this story and, for the most part, gets left behind in the dust or has a scene or two weaved in for the sake of it.
This novel did a great job at getting me hooked on the mystery. Though I saw the ending coming from a mile away and it was also too convenient I still want to know what happens next. I wonder how many books Alec will last at this rate.
The Audio Book:
I'm still not a fan of this narrator. Nicole naturally reads slowly and loves to pause at weird intervals in sentences. * Beware of spoilers for past novels in this series.
To tell you the truth I tried to make the audio book to this novel last. I didn't succeed very well considering I read it in 8 days but I sure tried to string this along and milk it for all it was worth.
I have to say that I didn't dislike the road this novel ended up traveling. It was a departure from the loose formula past books have established. This was one of the more character driven books and considering I'm VERY invested in anything relating to this series I liked it regardless.
Raven just had the rug pulled from under her by a person she trusts. The events in this novel shows how she deals with that while still trying to solve a problem that's come up later on. Things eventually work out but it's a long road to get there. The outcome of everything though was totally worth it!
Christian kind of proved himself worthy in this novel. I don't want to come right out and say it but OMG IT FINALLY HAPPENED! I'm so happy and yet skeptical of everything at this point. I'm scared this may be the calm before the storm just like Gaslight was the calm before the ending to Blackout hit.
I loved the new characters that have been introduced in this novel! So much fodder for even more spin-off novels. If only writing books were an easier and faster process. I'll take cliff notes at this point just to get a possible glimpse into what happens to them in the future!
The ending was so sweet! I can't wait for the next book in this series. It sounds like the next book may resume with the pre-established formula of solving crime and developing characters in the midst of it all.

This novel was TOO long-winded and was not worth 15 hours of my time. The basic concept is interesting but the way this was written doesn't do the story justice. The only way I finished this novel was by speeding up the audio book because things weren't moving and I was too far into the novel to justify not finishing it.
Layla makes SO many bad decisions and it always goes bad but she has yet to learn any lessons from the things she goes through. She's too naive and predictable. It's only gotten worse in this novel. All the rash and dumb decisions she makes has reached its quota for me. She's become more and more unlikable with every chapter.
This may or may not be an unpopular opinion with this trilogy, but how in the world is this love triangle even worth it at this point? Both "teams" are so bad in different ways and for different reasons. All the lying, making things up and secrets piling up only serve to make everything more dramatic and long-winded. Zayn seems to have a death wish in the form of trusting someone that can't even control her abilities (and those abilities can actually get him killed). Roth with all his lies and his noble justifications can't make everything that happened as a consequence to that all go away just by saying sorry.
The demons the author includes in this series (which was emphasized with the dance club scene with Roth) makes it seem like the demon world is a whole other complex universe, but it doesn't come across in the story. The wardens, especially, have an archaic system and think of themselves as "saviors" of some kind. Truthfully, they just keep getting worse and worse as a group. The other demons aren't even explored. They're just declared monsters to be killed or creatures to be run off. The story would have been more interesting had there been more of a focus on them instead of all the drama and "danger" surrounding Layla.
What the heck was that ending? I saw that coming from miles away (just like the twists in the first book). I'm starting to think that maybe it's what the author was going for. There weren't enough "twists" to this story to make this novel keep my attention.
My Consensus: This story only happened because everyone lied to someone about some important thing at one point in time. I wish it went deeper than that because the world the author created could have made for a really good story.
A Note: I'd like to mention how glad I was to see that the girl on girl hate has lessened (compared to the first novel), but the slut-shaming is at an all-time high (especially in the beginning).

I've lost count of the number of times I've picked up this book over the years and inevitably put it down because something else caught my attention. Books by this author used to be my jam, but it doesn't seem to be holding up anymore. This novel was very slow paced through the beginning, but when things speed up it was so good.
The heroine (with the exception of the very end) was out of the loop on everything and it wasn't a fun ride. It seemed like the author wanted to make her appear to be this sassy kick-butt heroine (especially when you take into account her being half gargoyle and half demon) but I don't think it was accomplished in the first 90% of this novel.
This book wasn't an exception where my stance on love triangles was concerned. Both love interests were sketchy and were looking out for their own interests by protecting Layla. Though Roth eventually won me over to his side because he presented himself as more competent but mysterious. Zayne, for the most part, was portrayed as a little boy who follows the rules the patriarchy sets for him even if he doesn't necessarily agree with them.
An annoying conclusion I came to throughout this story was that it was only possible because of all the lying that was happening. The gargoyles were the biggest hypocrites of them all and the leader refused to listen to reason even when it was presented in a respectful way. He could never see past Layla's demon half even though he raised her to essentially hate half of herself.
Overall, I disliked how absurdly easy it was for an outside source to figure out the supposedly "complex" riddle that leads to an ancient possession that a lot of creatures were looking for for years and years. I'd also like to mention that most of what happened in this story could be seen coming from miles and miles away. This isn't what I'd call a book of twists and turns. Despite all that I've mentioned in this review I do intend to continue on with this series considering how the book ended. I'm too invested for my own good at this point.
The Audio Book:
The narration was pleasant and that's about it. The overall tone was relaxing, which is what I usually look for in an audio book but there were a lot of times where there wasn't much of a distinction between male and female voices. I came across this book because a few people on Goodreads that are in my feed recently re-read a few books in this series and were saying how amazing this series as a whole is. After reading a novella in the series (which in this type of series that feature a different couple in every book should be able to stand alone in my opinion) I don't see what everyone else saw in this book.
This novel (probably because it's a novella in the series) didn't do a good job educating me on how the universe the author built worked. My biggest grievance was with the collars. I wanted to understand how they came to be specifically and how they were built, how long they took to become a necessity. The heroine (for having lived in this world as long as she had) was no help whatsoever. She was just as uninformed as me (the reader) which made her come off as very dense and quite naive.
Ronan was an okay guy. Though he did get overly possessive way too quickly of Elizabeth. Which leads me to something else I disliked about this story: the insta-love. I understand it's a novella, but things getting that "deep" that quickly doesn't work for me.
The ending was rushed and way too easily resolved. Nothing made me feel like anything was a life-or-death situation so it didn't have the emotional impact the author probably wanted. Overall, I would have liked to have had more information on the universe the author created present in this novel, for people like me, who don't always start a standalone book series on the first book.
The Audio Book:
The overall narration was nice, but the story felt like it was missing something which made everything not so good. This was an average story that made it so time passed a little faster for me while listening to it. My main issue: Everything felt only surface deep. There wasn't much substance to anything or anyone in this series. The world building felt off, in a way that everything was explained so loosely and on the surface that nothing ever felt real (if that makes any kind of sense).
Aria as an interesting character, but she would make really dumb choices considering how her world is running amok with paranormal creatures that only relying on their respective leaders to control and lead. I also didn't understand her out of character infatuation (in the second half of the book) with the men in her life.
Hunter was the one character I was starting to like. He was loyal, reliable and proved he cared about Aria throughout the story. Though that was about it. It's mentioned he's, in essence, this bad*ss mercenary, but it's not showcased. It's just there for convenience and plot sake.
The kind of sorta love triangle with the guy who has powers similar to hers (whose name I forget) was creepy from the start. He had to almost strongarm her into meeting for coffee (which ended up happening because coincidences is totally a realistic plot choice) like he was entitled to her in some way and it only got worse with the end. I don't understand how Aria felt anything for him after all that.
