For the first half I thought Woom is my first "extreme horror novel" experience, and I went into it expecting nothing more than gratuitous gross-outs.
For the first half I thought that's all I was getting. Even though there was a set up going on, my expectations were low, but what happens in the final act made me slap myself. I didn't expect it to be that good. It made me realise that some stories need to be nasty. Woom is one of those.
The big bonus is that - despite all the objects being stuffed into orifices - the writing and character development is excellent, which goes to show Ralston might be the go-to guy for this kind of stuff.
5 stars because I doubt there are many extreme horror novels out there that do what Woom does, but I may be wrong. I'll read "Cows" next and get back to you :)...more

Head-On follows Cope's time as front-man for 80s pop group "Teardrop Explodes" and contains all the sex and drugs stories you want to hear about from a band on tour.
Cope is self-deprecating, but he comes across like he is above it all at the same time creating an interesting and funny persona. He is also a music historian (esp. when it comes to the genesis of Krautrock, which brought us bands like "Can", "Faust", and "Kraftwerk") and the creator of one of the best albums of all-time in Jehovahkill.
Even if you are not a Cope fan, if you like British culture and music circa "The Fall" and "Joy Division" (dark ages Manchester), there is no better book than this....more

The bit I remember most is when one of the Losers, as a grown up, goes into a bar and downs whiskey while squirting lemon juice in his eyes. That was the best thing I'd ever read at the time.

He writes about watching the premiere of "Midnight Run" and hassling Robert De Niro afterwards because he wanted him to play the pizzeria owner, which the late Danny Aiello ended up playing. He writes about meeting Rosie Perez for the first time when she was a dancer in a club. There's the scene at the end of the movie when Mookie, played by Spike Lee, throws a garbage can through the pizzeria window. Take-after-take, Spike Lee couldn't break the window, and he writes about how embarrassed he felt (Danny Aiello told him he should go to the gym). This is an entertaining and honest account of a young film director feeling out of his depth making a studio movie on a tight budget ("tighter than chicken pussy" he says) before becoming world-famous after this incredible film.
A must-read for aspiring film-makers and lovers of the movie....more
