“As if waking from a dream, I reread these first few lines and want to disappear into their ugliness and obscenity. But there I go again with my ridiculous exaggerations.” . “Have I not already dazzled you with my creations? ”
“I have a line prepared to explain away this very failing: Beautiful feelings make bad literature. In which case, this precious spate of prose is proof that I’m no devil after all. Ah, blessed be the man who coined this phrase! It is a treasure of the language. An author can get away with using it but once in his career. Sad to say. The first time, it’s endearing. If you insist on using it a second or a third time, though, dear reader, hiding behind it like a shield, you can expect nothing but misery.”
“These guys were laughing all the time. Cracking up at the dumbest things, completely beside themselves. For these boys, smiling came as naturally as breathing, and laughter easy as an exhalation. It makes you wonder where they picked the habit up. To them, laughing was safe, but not laughing posed a serious risk. They found it irresistible. One might say that they were gluttonous for laughter, unable to pass up even a stray crumb, out of fear they might be questioned for withholding. The sad thing about all of this, however, is that none of them could laugh from the bottom of their bellies. Even as they doubled over laughing, they took notice of the way they looked to one another.”
“And it should come as no surprise that they loved making other people laugh as well, even if they had to hurt themselves to do so. Another instance of their nihilism, to be sure. But should you scratch below the surface, I think you’ll find a personal imperative to serve. Call it a sense of sacrifice. An aimless sense of sacrifice, lacking a clear objective. Any acts of heroism they had managed to achieve, as we define such things in terms of moral law, could be explained away as the byproduct of this latent need to serve.”
“It’s about time you thought about where your life is heading, down the road. There isn’t nearly as much family money as you think. This year’s harvest was a bust. I’m not expecting you to care, but our local bank has fallen on hard times. It’s pandemonium. Don’t laugh, but whether you’re an artist or a normal person like the rest of us, you have to worry about keeping food on the table. But you’re in a good place. You have a second chance. You might try breaking a sweat for a change.”
“But in my softness I find peace, however fleeting. ”
“Boy, do the dead masters have it good. Meanwhile, the hacks up here among the living waste themselves away, burying their work in misguided commentary, in the hopes that it might win the admiration of even one more reader. The result is an abomination, laden with ridiculously tedious asides. Alas, I lack the fortitude to throw a pie in my own face and bellow, “Pull yourself together, man!”
“The desire for perfection. The lure of the masterpiece.”
“What am I but a tangle of uncertainty and pride?”

Maybe reading this book for a long time while dealing with university and life wasn't a good idea and that is why I could not love it to the fullest. But sigh.... this book will be a roller coaster when you know about the author and the way mental illness is portrayed in this book along with the main character's thoughts breaking and scaring you because of how relatable they are. this book will mean a lot to me by the time I was reading it so many ups and downs were going on in life and I was turning to this book for some rest. This book is a gem and please read it. I'm now committing to read other works by Osamu Dazai <3...more
