Sure, she is superficial and vain and annoying at times because she seems to focus on arbitrary details and fantasy, but she is so young! That's how teenagers are. They think they know everything; they want everything. Didn’t Charles also do something similar with his former wife? Charles escaped to check out Emma while he was married. Karma’s a bitch. Do something wrong and it will come back ten times worse for you. I reiterate, YOUNG! Thinking about it, it makes sense how full of lust she was. Most humans are slaves to their biological functions and Emma is no exception. She is young and healthy and therefore: fertile and ergo: yearning for physical affection (horny), but not just of anyone! I kind of hate to point this out but evolutionarily, biologically, women will seek a male that they consider worthy of having their genes passed on to the next generation: most likely a strong handsome man. Poor Charles is not considered this in her eyes. He disappoints her with his lack of passion for life and intellect. I admit he even inspires some contempt in the end when he forgives the man she cheated on him with-- in resignation. She sees him as weak and incompetent, and at times stupid. It is no wonder she is not attracted to him. He is a sweet and caring husband, but she did not choose him, he was chosen for her by her father. She still had a choice in some sense and she chose wrong, she believed herself to be in love only to prove herself wrong. She wanted to live in a state of intense happiness all the time: she was a romantic in this way. In this way she is an outsider to society’s values. She was careless with her management of money, she used it to escape the misery and boredom of her ordinary life in contrast to her exciting books. It was disheartening to see how Charles fell apart over his wife and always thought the best of her character while she hated him for being mediocre in her eyes. Her little daughter too was pushed away from her bosom, she wasn’t deemed important enough for Emma. Emma is an absolute idealist. It seems Emma does not know the difference between love and infatuation. It seems that she has only ever known infatuation because love is much more than fiery moments of passion and proclamations of feeling. Love is ordinary and yes boring, consistent, but also beautiful. ...more

Essentially it explained how to empathize and truly listen to another human and this is done by expressing our needs and emotions-- this requires vulnerability and openness. It also talked about the importance of gratitude and how it can change our life as well as the people in our lives. The tone of the writing was compassionate and positive. This book made me feel happy, hopeful, and enthusiastic to better understand people with specific techniques that will help me emotionally connect to others; it also reassured me that being vulnerable is a sign of inner strength and courage. Great message. I will definitely be reading this again and going back to it! <3...more
