Borrowed The Liar from the library about a month ago. I finally decided to get stuck in last night, only to discover -to my horror- that I've already Borrowed The Liar from the library about a month ago. I finally decided to get stuck in last night, only to discover -to my horror- that I've already read it!
AHHHH!!!
I suppose this is an achievement in the reading world? Do I get a medal? Commemorative plaque? No? Ah well...
Anyway, this was great fun. I always enjoy Eddie's adventures. This one involves kidnapping, an insane asylum, murder. You know, the usual.
I have officially decided that this kind of book is not for me. Same problem I had with Behind Her Eyes. Sure it was a breeze to read. I had it finished in just over 24hrs. Made me feel well-chuffed with myself. And then I moved on, never gave it another thought. In fact, I couldn't even be bothered to post a review. Yes, I feel awful saying that. I'm sorry I was not moved to care.
I'm frustrated by this book. I'm frustrated by this 'the new Gone Girl' trend. I'm frustrated that publishers and authors think we want the same thing over and over, just in a slightly different package. I haven't even read Gone Girl and I'm fucking sick of it! (I will, someday. I have it on good authority that it is rather good.) So please for the love of all that is sacred stop selling me copies of copies! I should point out that GG was probably not the first, just the most successful. The Hunger Games of this particular sub-genre. I just want something original, is that really too much to ask?
I never believed Cass was crazy. I never believed everyone around her was innocent. I never believed the killer was after her. I was just skipping along with the story until the was revealed; and then, well, by then I didn't much care.
I don't know if it's me, or if it's a result of my issues with this genre, or if it was really just not that good. Surely if it was I would love it? Wouldn't I? I can't even trust my own opinion on something I read! See? Frustrating....more
A break from my usual reading. Truth is, I can't even remember requesting this from NetGalley. I so glad I did! After my request was approved, I discovered rather annoyingly that it was the second in the series. So I hopped over to my local library and picked up book 1.
The Defence didn't have me quite convinced. But this has completed changed that! I was totally sucked in by it all. Eddie is one of the most real characters I've ever had the pleasure to read. There is something very believable about him. Even if I didn't quite buy the plot so much at first.
Eddie is, once again, shoved firmly between a rock and a hard place. Get this kid to take him on as counsel, and then get him to take a deal and testify against the prestigious law firm, Harland & Sinton, or his wife will face prosecution. Only problem is, Eddie knows the kid is innocent. He can feel it in his gut. And there's no way his wife would ever allow him to convince his client to plead guilty to something he didn't do just for her sake. Hence his dilemma.
His only option is to prove his client was set up for murder, had no idea about the alleged money laundering, and somehow help his wife out of this mess as well. All in a days work for Eddie. Well a few days anyway.
One of favourite things about this book is how you get a real insight into a trial, or in this case, a preliminary hearing. It's quite fascinating to see how lawyers, both prosecution and defense will exploit any angle to get a win. Just like Eddie Flynn says, there's not much difference between being a lawyer and being a conman.
A nice change to my usual reading, and one I;ll definitely continue with.

So there I was scratching around on NetGalley, looking for more books to read (when I'm already drowning in books to read!) when I thought "Let's try a thriller!". I found one, The Plea, it sounded very good, I requested it, and a few days later it was approved by the publisher. I was very happy, until I discovered it's book 2 in the series! I figured if the publisher was generous enough to approve my request the least I could do was be familiar with the characters. (I was also really worried I wouldn't know what was going on.) So off I went to the library to get the first in the series, this one.
Well I liked it, all the characters were great, it just lacked the thrilling punch. More of a courtroom drama with a deadline. I wasn't exactly on the edge of my seat, but it was a decent read. Now I'm not sure if it's because the book lacked action or because I'm stepping out of my usual genre.
I will say this though, Eddie is the perfect 'hero' for this story. Smart, quick on his feet, charming, and desperately trying to hold it all together. My kind of protagonist. I really think this would make an awesome tv adaptation! ...more

Irene is an agent for the Library, a secret organisation that exists between realities, it is her duty to track down certain important books for safekeeping. Its a straightforward job, get in, gather information, acquire book.
Not with this mission. I think this is one of those books that is best enjoyed having almost no knowledge of the plot beforehand. If you like Victorian detective mystery with an element of fantasy you'll like this. It's surprising and fun. ...more
"The woman with the choker slid over, inspecting me with all the subtlety of a dog in heat - it seemed she had no better taste in men A short excerpt:
"The woman with the choker slid over, inspecting me with all the subtlety of a dog in heat - it seemed she had no better taste in men than jewelry. Up close she looked like someone better seen from further away. 'I don't believe I've had the pleasure,' she began. 'Are you mad? I had you last year at Lord Addington's spring formal! We went behind his pagoda and I took you from the rear. You said I was the best you ever had!'"
I loved the Warden, I loved the first-person PoV. I love the slum setting and the seedy gangsters. Unfortunately I saw the twist coming, yes even the first time I read this back in 2014, but, BUT I still really love this book and can't understand why it has a average rating of 3.83? Deserves to be higher. ...more

Detective Patricia Ryder is a cop in the Chicago PD. She has spent the last few weeks hunting a killer that has a habit of chopping heads off. Then some weird stuff starts happening. She meets Darius, who is single-handedly trying to save our world from something called "the Swarm". Naturally they run off on an adventure to save the world!
Some of the characters I found a little stereotypical, Ryder is a hard-nosed female cop, with a foul mouth and a sarcastic streak a mile long. Darius is extremely determined and won't let anything stop him from completing what he set out to do. Joseph is different, suffering from severe epilepsy and a strong case of OCD he has a lot more depth to him.
Urban fantasy is not really my thing, but I think 3.5 is a fair rating. Fans of the genre will really enjoy this. Also recommended for people who like guns, there are a lot of guns in this book, most of which went over my head. My knowledge is limited to whatever is on CoD....more

We kick off three years after the events of The Straight Razor Cure/Low Town, between his usual "job" the Warden is also looking for a missing woman. Through various flashbacks and dialogues we learn this particular woman's deceased brother had past ties to the Warden during the war.
At the same time the Veterans Association is making trouble with the crown. Rising tensions, the hottest summer in years combined with the Warden throwing a few twigs on the bonfire result in some fireworks.
This is very much a character driven story, as before Polansky pulls it off effortlessly. The rising tension is perfectly portrayed. The Warden is a pleasure to read, as flawed as he is smart; as tough as he is cunning. A perfect contradiction of regret, bitterness and disappointment. Quite simply a great read....more

Then I realised something, this book was published 15 years ago. At a time when the urban fantasy genre was pretty lame, it still has a reputation for horny shape-shifters and dreamy vampires. So I'll bump it up to 4 stars. I'm feeling generous today.
I was hoping this book would convert me to the whole urban fantasy club, but I'm still not convinced. Not that I have much experience in this particular branch of the fantasy tree. I can only compare it to my two other encounters with this genre and say that it was better in most parts. There was not as much action, but there was a lot more going on. Too often in this genre, wizards (good and bad) and the like will go rampaging around the city destroying whatever is in the way. Not so here, there are rules, there's a council in charge. With Wardens to take care of anyone who steps out of line.
This isn't a challenging read, it's not a work of literary genius. What it is is the best urban fantasy I've read. It gives me hope that we won't be stuck with cardboard cut out characters, oversexed shape-shifters, and clichéd kickass females with daddy issues. Here's hoping....more
