I had to put Illuminae down for a whole day because I thought the stress and excitement might give me serious health issues. THAT is how good Illuminae was. But this one just didn't even come close to that. It was fun, sure, but I wasn't really invested in the characters and the romance felt unnecessary and like an afterthought. As if the authors thought "oh we need romance to appeal to all the allos out there so let's put that in". It just missed that feeling that I got when reading Illuminae: which had these amazing plot twists and original writing and a story that kept you invested, even when there wasn't a lot happening. But this one had a single plot twist that surprised me, good writing but definitely not as original and innovative as Illuminae, and I wasn't very invested in anything that happened. But like I said, it wasn't bad in any way, it just really does not compare to the whirlwind that is Illuminae....more

This is becauseLet me just say from the start, this book could have been really good. It had the potential to be so much more than it ended up being. This is because the author made one vital flaw: the characters. The book starts off with Jonah's ship crashing, and on the ship, there are a lot of people. You don't get to know many of those because the majority is death after the crash. However, you do get to know A LOT of characters, and most of them aren't even important. In the beginning, I thought a few characters were important to the story but ended up dying really soon after you even get to know them. This made me question why I should bother remembering names and characters if the author's gonna kill them off anyway.
So throughout this story of killing characters (because that's basically what happens), none of them really made an impression on me. The only character I remember by name is Jonah and that's only because he was the main character. Jonah has an interesting background, he's an orphan, struggles with his past, etc, but that is barely explored at all! I would have loved to get more insight in Jonah's life and how it has affected him, instead of this weak backstory that seems only to be there to give him some interesting characteristics. Because basically, Jonah doesn't have much of a character. Not that the other characters had much of one either.
The story goes on as these kids (whose names I can't remember) run around on a moon, bickering, fighting and overall never seem to agree on A N Y T H I N G. It gave me strong The 100 vibes, which is not a good thing. The immaturity of the characters started to annoy me so much.
The antagonist of this story did not seem to have any more depth than being a psychopath and enjoying killing people, which is pretty much the same amount of depth the characters had tbh. I can go on and on about these characters... but I think I made my point.
The writing style didn't have anything special to it if you ask me and even was cringy at times. With sentences like "it's as if he's been blown to pieces, and he falls over like a tower of toy blocks." it didn't impress me much. Seriously, what kind of simile is that?
Let's end this on a bright note, the story had a lot of adventure and action. There was something going on at all times and I liked that! I found a quote that really represents the story if you ask me: 'He almost died. Again.'
To conclude, I am giving this book 2 stars because I honestly struggled with finding good points for this review. It had a lot of adventure but with a serious lack of character depth and constant bickering, I found it very hard to keep reading this book. I have skimmed entire chapters because I just didn't feel like it was worth my time. But perhaps, if you liked The 100th, you might enjoy this one. I don't remember much about The 100 (the book), but I watched part of the tv-series and I felt like the character dynamics and story elements were quite similar. I will not say I recommend this book but if you wanna read it, don't let me stop you!

The concept itself isn’t very original, it’s about a crew of a spaceship that travels around the universe. However, what makes this story so wholly unique is the characters and the worldbuilding. The characters were all so different in so many ways. Not only because of their personalities, but they weren’t even all from the same species.
“Ninety percent of all problems are caused by people being assholes.” “What causes the other ten percent?” asked Kizzy. “Natural disasters,” said Nib.”
Since it is a sci-fi novel that is set in the far far future, other species have been discovered and not only that, but Humans now live in a universe with many different cultures, languages and none of these have not gotten a focus in this book. Becky Chambers has put so much time into giving all the species cultural habits, historical facts, languages and so much more. The characters also got so much time to develop, and there is so much to say about every single one of them. But I’ll let you discover them by yourself.
“That’s not the same. What happened to you, to your species, it’s . . . it doesn’t even compare.’ ‘Why? Because it’s worse?’ She nodded. ‘But it still compares. If you have a fractured bone, and I’ve broken every bone in my body, does that make your fracture go away? Does it hurt you any less, knowing that I am in more pain?”
What I liked less about this book was how it was quite slow. I knew going into this book that it wasn’t going to be a fast-paced book, but still, I wished it was just a little more intense. This story is definitely character-driven, which is good, but it would be nice if it was a bit more plot-driven too. Sometimes I put down the book and not pick it up for days, which is something I normally don’t do with a book. That was just because there was not really anything dragging me into the story. Another thing I didn’t like as much was how some things got a lot of focus and others did not. I would love to read more about a certain relationship in the story (if you read it, you probably know which one I mean).
“The truth is, Rosemary, that you are capable of anything. Good or bad. You always have been, and you always will be. Given the right push, you, too, could do horrible things. That darkness exists within all of us.
I thought this was the first book in a series, so I thought these little things that bothered me, might improve in the second book. But it turns out, that it’s a companion novel and not a series! So now I’m a bit sad because I won’t read about my crew anymore… they are truly something!
Overall, I loved how elaborate everything was developed. The characters and the world were amazing and I loved reading about them, but if the story was a bit more plot-driven, I think I would have loved it more. I am giving this book 4 stars because, despite my minor negatives, I really enjoyed reading it! I definitely recommend this if you like series like Doctor Who or Firefly!

The first 2/3 was all sweet and innocent (it reminded me a little of fangirl but then like 10x better since I didn't like fangirl much) and the last 1/3 came and it turned 180 into a mystery-thriller kind of story. I did kind of see the plot twist coming but I didn't mind at all! It was much fun and I loved that the main character Romy has anxiety, it was very interesting to read about. Some things were a little farfetched but it's sci-fi so it's always a little farfetched. (view spoiler)[ I still cannot possibly understand how J's parents left their son on Earth??? How can you do such a thing as a parent?? Okay, he was coming several years later, but still!! I also found it weird that he did not blame his parents for leaving him but he did blame two (actually, three) people he barely knew of their (accidental) deaths. And that includes a girl who was barely more than a teen at the time. (hide spoiler)]...more
This book seems like a really cute superhero story reminiscent of Romeo and Juliet but then gay. And it is exactly that (a little less Romeo and JulieThis book seems like a really cute superhero story reminiscent of Romeo and Juliet but then gay. And it is exactly that (a little less Romeo and Juliet-like though). But it is also a really badass story about corrupt governments and family and friendship with some morality mixed in. The story starts off with Jess starting an internship at what she thinks is a good organization only to realize her boss is actually a villain (and also her parents' – who are superheroes – enemy). She now has to deal with not only that new job, but also with a crush on Abby who also turns out to work there.
“Maybe Jess was caught up with these ridiculous, impossible ideas because it meant she never had to try for something real.”
The story is really predictable, and that sounds like a bad thing, but I really didn’t mind it at all. It actually might have made it even more fun, in a way. You knew what was going to happen and that things were going to be okay, and that made it just a really fun experience because you didn’t really have to worry about anything, you know? Is that weird? Probably.
This book is so diverse, it’s amazing. The main character Jess is Vietnamese-Chinese and bisexual, and her friend Bells is a transgender black boy and her other friend Emma is latina. I just adored these characters so much! In the first book you follow Jess’ perspective but in Not Your Villain Bells is the lead and in the next book that will hopefully be released soon Emma will be the lead.
“We can’t just sit on our asses and not live our lives while we’re trying to expose a corrupt government.”
A thing I liked less was the writing style, it was not bad, but it felt a bit rigid in the beginning. I actually thought I wasn’t going to like it as much because of that but after reading a bit more, I really didn’t mind it at all and it actually grew on me.
I’m giving this book 4.5 stars because it was just so much fun! I had the best time reading this book and I immediately picked up the next after I was done (that says a lot because I’m usually terrible at picking up sequels). The characters and the story were great and I can’t wait to read more about them! I really recommend picking up this book if you like books that are really easy and fun to read but do want that cute queer content 🙂
