My face nearly cracked because my smile was so big, and I really can not think of this book without smiling yet again. It's all about the power of imagination, and written in a marvelously clever way. This may be a children's book, but based on the half dozen people I grabbed yesterday and had them read the book (it only takes a minute), grown-ups get a lot of pleasure out of it too. ...more

It is what Maguire calls a 'reillumination' of the famous, though not oft heard anymore, Hans Christian Anderson tale 'The Little Match Girl'. Accompanied by his own line drawings, this story is told in a way that only Maguire could. His fans will love it. ...more

This is the first book in a series about 11 year old Zack Goodspeed and his eccentric and mysterious grandfather Fyodor. It seems that the old gent has invented a new, limitless power source and has set out to colonize the moon. Zack and the new neighbor girl Max sneak their way into plenty of adventures and dangers throughout this book. The illustrations are fantastic, giving a reality to the imaginative sci-fi features in this book. There are plenty of thrills and mystery, with short chapters that are sure to have kids pleading for the chance to read just one more chapter before lights out. There is also an interactive website set up that will eventually allow kids to write their own Onyx Sun adventures, though a visit to it today showed the site was not quite ready for it's many promised uses. Mahoney also plans teacher lesson plans that will link scenes in the books with real world math and science problems. It's an ambitious project and a fantastic book that should appeal to kids everywhere. Who knows, Zach could well be the next Harry Potter! ...more

But Lorelei is very much her own character with her own problems. She's got two brothers ( one older, one younger), her cat just died, and now her parents are splitting up. Convinced that she will one day be famous, she begins to write a journal chronicling what all is happening in her life for her future biographers ( so they don't have to make stuff up about her). One of her teachers told her that many writers picture someone they are writing TO in their minds so that writing is more like a conversation, so Lorelei decides to writer her journal entries to Mud, her dead cat. Often funny, we still see tough things through her astute 11 year old eyes. It's quite good, and I'd recommend it for the 8-12 age group, or anyone (like me) curious about Smith's writing.
