Humboldt is a name that should be as globally acknowledged and universal as Einstein, newton and Darwin. The all-encompassing reach and influence of Humboldt and his ideas are so prevalent in such a vast amount of our modern scientific understanding (from evolution to earth system teleconnections to even the modern environmental movement) that it is unimaginable he is not a household name. He inspired and directly/indirectly mentored such an accomplished group of scientists, authors, artists, poets, musicians, etc. (including Darwin, Goethe, Muir, etc.) it is likely impossible to even quantify how many aspects of modern day life he has a partial foothold in. Reading and learning about not just Humboldt the scientist, but Humboldt the man is inspiring and shocking how far ahead of his time he truly was. After reading, I now cannot wait to dig into some of Alexander’s originals to get a glimpse into his once in a generational mind. This book is an absolute must read, and has introduced a new icon into my life.

Another must read from Bill. If I had to choose one book to recommend to someone who is skeptical, apathetic, and/or new to climate science, this would be the book. Bill is able to fit not just a detailed scientific explanation of impacts, explanations on why those impacts are occurring/how we are contributing to them, but he also eloquently explains what we can realistically do about it. This book is an incredible wealth of information that is useful for an overall understanding of climate change, and for an education on what we can do as individuals. Highly highly recommend
