Detective Cadillac Holland finds himself performing a dangerous dance, staying a step behind a mobster’s missing diaries and a step ahead of the criminal factions who want them.
Marion ‘Sunset’ Puglisi’s diaries go missing on the eve of the mobster’s release from prison and place Detective Holland in the middle of a brewing gang war between the remnants of New Orleans’ Italian mobsters and outside criminal factions, which includes the nearby Dixie Mafia and an ambitious Russian gangster. Everyone is prepared to pay whatever it costs to possess the diaries, and even Detective Holland finds the price higher than he expects.
My relationship with New Orleans began with a job cooking in a cafe on Bourbon Street at the age of seventeen. My foodservice resume now includes many of New Orleans’ iconic music and dining destinations. I no longer reside in New Orleans full time but I keep to the expat creed of “Be a New Orleanian wherever you are.” A devoted reader of detective and crime novels, I have worked as a chef on a boat traveling the inland waterways since Hurricane Katrina and began thinking up stories about a detective living in post-Katrina New Orleans, which I now write in my spare time. My life is divided between working on the water and preserving a Victorian-era home in Hannibal, Missouri that I share with my wife and our rescue pets, which include a neurotic wolfhound/terrier mix and too many cats.
This is the 6th book in the Detective Cadillac Holland series and I have read and loved each one. This series just goes from strength to strength and this time around the author has really upped the stakes for Cadillac, Tulip, Katie and Tony.
This is a series that I would definitely recommend reading in order as it sets out the relationships between the four I have mentioned above.
When Sunset is released on parole there is something fishy about it. The rumour is that Sunset has diaries that go back several decades. These diaries could end the careers of politicians, police, and lawyers and also end their lives as well as the lives of some local mob guys as well. This book is set deeply in the world of mobsters, gangsters, criminals and pretty much the worst of the worst. Not happy just having one mobster, the author brings in several along with their lawyers and various agencies such as local police, and the FBI. Now with this mix you know there is going to be at least one or two that are going to let the chance of gaining more power, respect and money got to their heads. It seems to me that pretty much everyone has something that they need to keep secret and so the race is on to find the diaries and discover how they can be used.
Oh my goodness the author really has upped the stakes on this story. There are so many different threads with this book, I did lose myself a couple of times, but found myself back on track as I kept reading. The twists in the story just keep coming and I think the author has done an amazing job of keeping them separate until they are needed to join up[, and when they do... well it comes with a Wow!
Having Cadillac and Tony with their pasts, and then bringing them back into play again was a good move. It adds a little more detail and jogs the memory as to who Tony was and what he is capable of. Luckily having two supportive women with Tulip and Katie, the men do have the expert advice to work their way through any legal problems, they also try to keep the men on the right track. Not always successfully.
This is such a tense story and one that really kept me hooked. It does go into the pasts of some characters and others are brought to the front. As I read this I knew I was never going to see how it was going to end. As there are a few players in this book, they need their own endings. Once again the author brought them successfully and convincingly to where they needed to be.
I do think this series gets better. I do love the inclusion of food, this is one of the author's passions and it is great to see one of his interests getting a mention.
This is a complex story and case for Cadillac, and it really stretches him on a professional and personal level. It also involves his family as well as his friends and for some, it may actually be a step too far for them. The title is very apt for this book as Everybody does pay in one form or another.
Cracking story and if you like crime thrillers then this is a series you really do need on your radar. Set in New Orleans and full of references to food, districts and streets that tantalise the tastebuds as well as building a vivid image of the area. The author's knowledge of the area really does shine through, he has his characters running back alleys and shortcuts in their quest for the truth. This is a brilliant series and this latest book is amazing. It is one I would absolutely recommend. Expect to see this on my Top Reads of the Year list!
“After the previous book I expected a shocking twist but key point here is the plural ‘twists’. This was a ride like no other and if you add mob? Yeah, everything could have had happened! The author develop a hooking up story from the beginning to the end. Enjoy the mystery and be amazed with the plot.”
This is the third Cadillac Holland book I’ve read by Hiller and is by far my favorite. Not because I like reading about mobsters, necessarily, but because the stakes are incredibly high and everyone involved has something to lose, especially Detective Holland. It’s not just the Italian mob, here, but the author describes with vivid detail several factions of organized crime syndicates all racing to find the elusive diary of contract killer, Marion Puglisi.
Having also read Parish the Thought (Book 5) and Blowback (Book 1) of this crime series, I love the way the author has developed Holland as a character through this succession of complex investigations. And just when I think I know him well enough to predict what’s going to happen, there’s another surprise I hadn’t seen coming.
I consider Hiller to be one of the best crime writers out there right now, and Holland one of the most interesting Detectives. If you like the rich backdrop of New Orleans and gritty, complex thrillers, you will love Everybody Pays. I certainly did.
When the missing diaries of the mobster Marion Puglisi Detective Cadillac Holland is trying to keep one step ahead of the people that want them. The diaries go missing on the eve of Puglisi 's release and there are the Italian mafia in New Orleans to the Dixie Mafia to the Russian gangster , they all want those books for one reason on another . Everyone is willing to do anything get those diaries even kill for them. Will detective Holland keep one step ahead and keep himself alive in the process. Cadillac and the gang are back and funnier then ever . Cadillac is having such a time of it lately. He is trying so hard not get killed while figuring out what is going on. He is still bumbling around sort of way about him but he has a great mind and will always figure out what has happened. He still has his love for food . There is such a fun ensemble cast of characters through out the book that really help Cadillac out or want to kill him depends on the day. They are such well written and complex and each of them have their own personality and quirks that pop of the page at you. There are characters that you will love and those that you just can't stand. This is the 6th book in the series and it stands up very well, the author really upped his game in this book . There are a lot of threads through out the book and I will admit i did get a little confused in parts but the author got me back on track . I truly enjoyed this book so if you want a great mystery with rich characters check out this series .
What a ride we were in with this book! I will say, there are a lot of people and names in this book to try and keep straight. A new detective, mob bosses, lawyers, old characters from previous books, and of course the usual characters who we've been with from the beginning. The Russians, the Italians, the mob boss from Chicago, and the Dixie Mafia...everyone seems to want a piece of New Orleans and will do whatever it takes to stake their claim.
With Puglisi now out of prison everyone is trying to make their play. Whether it's keeping Puglisi in line or trying to find the journals he promised in exchange for his freedom. Everyone is willing to do whatever they need to do to get ahead and get their hands on these journals. The journals not only have damning information on Puglisi or the other mobsters, but also some of the older NOPD detectives and maybe even the FBI. But what will it take for someone to get their hands on these journals?
I really liked this book. I feel in all the previous ones we are told that Detective Holland is a bada$$. We see he's quick and smart and how he solves issues...which might I add, I loved his solution to get rid of all of the problems with the mob bosses by getting them over the state lines and out of NOPD jurisdiction. However, we really get to see just how serious he is when it comes to protecting the ones he love.
I'm sorry to say, I've just met H. Max Hiller in <Everybody Pays: Cadillac Holland Mysteries (Book 6)Everybody Pays, the 6th book in his Cadillac Holland Mystery Series. Hiller pulled me in with his very real New Orleans French Quarter locale––food and all. Even as I slogged through the array of unsavory characters, the mystery behind lost diaries written by a underworld killer, captured my imagination and kept me reading through the twisting plot. Did the diaries exist and would all the mobs from as far away as Russia be able to dominate the post-Katerina world? Now, I want to follow this detective who lives on the edge of the law while working at his own pace with the police.
What an amazing story with so many characters to keep track of. The story reminded me of detectives or mysteries of old I almost expected Philip Marlowe to appear. Cadillac Holland is a great character. This story really did him justice. We get to go on this amazing ride with him staying one step ahead of everyone else. His mind is like a steel trap at odds with his easy laid back attitude. New Orleans has a story of its own with the food, music and the people to keep the reader entertained. As he tries to find Sunsets diaries he must stay ahead of the Italians, Russians, Chicago mob and local who will do anything to get the diaries. As the bodies start to add up the players see what he is willing to do for people he cares about. This story moves quickly with Katie and Tulip helping to keep it all straight. The characters are truly what makes this so entertaining you cannot put it down. This author has done an amazing job.
When you think NOLA, you don’t normally think about the mafia – but it has a rich history there, and that history is exactly what Holland finds himself wrapped up in. Although this is book six in the series, you can easily dive right in without feeling lost. Hiller does an excellent job of introducing the characters and the setting, letting you slip right into the thick of it all. There were a lot of chess pieces on the board, but each had their own personalities and motivations, making it easy to keep track of them all. There’s a lot of tension right from the start, whoever holds the journals also holds a lot of power, and time is not on Holland’s side. The twists will keep you wondering, and until you reach the very end, you can never be sure who will end up on top, and in possession of the journals. If you enjoy high stakes crime thrillers, you’ll want to grab this!
When Cadillac Holland is one the job it's never boring instead it's exciting, a roller coaster of emotions from start to finish. When a certain Mobster is out of jail, every mob you could think of want his journals , with all the dirt of so many people. It's a feel for all trying to get that the regular excitement of A Cadillac Holland mystery is ten fold. This is a series that is wonderful to read, never boring with lots of emotions throughout the whole thing
When you pick up a Cadillac Holland mystery you can expect the unexpected. Crime and corruption in New Orleans takes center stage as everyone tries to get their hands on a mobster's diaries. From the first sentence through the twist and turns to the satisfying conclusion I was quickly turning the pages. I look forward to reading more about the NOLA of Tony, Tulip, Katie and Cadillac.
Oh, I had forgotten how much I enjoy detective books! Read this one, got lost in it and read til 5:30 in the morning because it was so so good I couldn't put it down. This is book 6 in the series, I need to read the previous ones even if its not really necessary. The book is fast paced, filled with twists and turns and lots of mobsters and gangsters. I definitely recommend this series
What better combination of enticement could be involved? Retired assassin best friend, New Orleans, and crime syndicates oh my! Let's hope the dog doesn't get hurt.
Detective Holland has to stay on his toes and try to find a mobster's missing diaries. He also has to deal with the war brewing between different mob/gang families. Can the Big Easy as well as others including Holland survive the war's devastation?
Fast-paced and thrilling! I loved the mystery and the numerous twists and turns throughout the story. The end was satisfying and wrapped things up well.
This plot has more layers than lasagna and I loved it. One of my favorite aspects if this series is its description of food and menu items. Very clever!
