Bridgertons

Queen Charlotte

Rate this book
From #1 New York Times bestselling author Julia Quinn and television pioneer Shonda Rhimes comes a powerful and romantic novel of Bridgerton's Queen Charlotte and King George III's great love story and how it sparked a societal shift, inspired by the original series Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, created by Shondaland for Netflix.

“We are one crown. His weight is mine, and mine is his…”

In 1761, on a sunny day in September, a King and Queen met for the very first time. They were married within hours.

Born a German Princess, Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz was beautiful, headstrong, and fiercely intelligent… not precisely the attributes the British Court had been seeking in a spouse for the young King George III. But her fire and independence were exactly what she needed, because George had secrets… secrets with the potential to shake the very foundations of the monarchy.

Thrust into her new role as a royal, Charlotte must learn to navigate the intricate politics of the court… all the while guarding her heart, because she is falling in love with the King, even as he pushes her away. Above all she must learn to rule, and to understand that she has been given the power to remake society. She must fight—for herself, for her husband, and for all her new subjects who look to her for guidance and grace. For she will never be just Charlotte again. She must instead fulfill her destiny… as Queen.

#1 New York Times bestselling author Julia Quinn loves to dispel the myth that smart women don't read (or write) romance, and and if you watch reruns of the game show The Weakest Link you might just catch her winning the $79,000 jackpot. She displayed a decided lack of knowledge about baseball, country music, and plush toys, but she is proud to say that she aced all things British and literary, answered all of her history and geography questions correctly, and knew that there was a Da Vinci long before there was a code.

A graduate of Harvard and Radcliffe Colleges, Ms. Quinn is one of only sixteen members of Romance Writers of America’s Hall of Fame. Her books have been translated into 32 languages, and she lives with her family in the Pacific Northwest.

The Bridgertons, her popular series of historical romance, is currently in production by Shondaland as a Netflix original series starring Julie Andrews, Phoebe Dynevor, and Rége-Jean Page.

"I will stand with you between the heavens and the earth. I will tell you where you are."

I admit, after watching what they did to season 2 of Bridgerton, I was beyond nervous for this show/book to come out. If you're a book fan, you'll know exactly what I mean. So when I say that this is Julia Quinn's best book I hope you know how incredibly serious I am when I label it as such.

It felt like he best kind of throw back to December of 2020 when I was searching for that thing... and I found Bridgerton. Binging the show, buying all the books, falling in love with the entire family: it was truly what brought me out of my covid slump. I can't even tell you how many times I've watched season one. I don't know if I want to admit how many times I've already watched Queen Charlotte.

Thank you so much, Julia, for always making stories funny and kind and above all, full of love. Whether it was 2020 or last week, you always seem to know how to make the light shine through with your words.

Queen Charlotte is about the untold story (in this universe) of Charlotte and George. I know as an avid watcher, their story is one I was dying to know more about. Not only did it surpass every expectation I had, but it created new ones that I don't think nonfiction will ever bring to life.

Charlotte is ripped from her country, and her life, to marry a man she doesn't know. I assume that's pretty typical for the time based on all the fiction we take in on a regular basis that has that particular situation. The difference for Charlotte is that she's betrothed to the King of England, and she has no choice...

Until he gives her one. You can tell within the first few moments of their interaction that there is something special between them. A connection, a light, a shooting star. Maybe even the transit of Venus. The way the book painted every scene in the show with more detail captured my interest right from the start. I remember the first moment I cried being when she referred to him as "Your Majesty" rather than "George" and it was no different in the book.

I loved the back stories, the continuation of others. I was entranced by the back and forth, getting both perspectives, all perspectives of those closest to the King and Queen. I think it was the only way this story could have been told.

I love how absolute their love is. How timeless, how reckless, how kind. Understanding. Passionate. A miracle, even. I love that Charlotte will stand up for George every day of her life when he cannot stand up for himself. I love that she never talks down to him for having a mental illness in a time where that was what was expected. I love that he feels like half a man so she only ever refers to them as one crown.

"If what we have is half, then we shall make it the very best half."

What was most important to me, however, was the realistic depiction of mental illness. For the time period, yes, but also how timeless the expectation of perfection as always been. How terrifying pressure and attention can be. I'm grateful for the honesty, and what it means to have someone tell you who you are is not only enough, but everything. That being half is sometimes a whole. That when changing isn't an option, embracing always can be.

It's what love is meant to be. It's not always equal. Sometime it's one person holding onto it so tight that the other person can never forget them, no matter how their mind may look on the inside. Love is reality when the world feels like fiction.

Love is reminding someone where they are when nothing else makes sense.

after reading: 3.5/5 stars

I started this book as soon as it came out. And then... quickly lost interest.

I think the 1:1 adaption of the book at first made it feel like I was reading the show script rather than reading a book, which was a little disappointing. I, of course, LOVED the show, but I wanted the book to offer something else.

However, I picked the book back up recently to try and power through and found that roughly 40% of the way through, it really starts to feel like its own entity from the show, and started to pick up for me.

There were bits that were cut that didn't quite make sense to me (spoiler - why was the Lord Bridgerton x Lady Danbury affair cut? Did Quinn just not like that plot point or something? I feel like I didn't love that he cheated but I LOVED the fact Agatha got to experience sex for the sake of her pleasure, and removing that felt like there was a hole in her story. She could've even slept with Charlotte's brother, or SOMEBODY else. Besides - the lack of Violet and/or her dad in this book makes the claim that this is part of the "Bridgerton" series very weak).

There were also bits that were added that I quite enjoyed, however (more Brimsley x Reynolds content)!

Overall, I think I came into this book with too high of expectations, riding high off the perfection that was the show. I don't think it's a bad book, it's just not the 5 star read I was hoping for.

before reading: 5/5 stars

Haven't read yet but there are a STARTLING amount of 1 star reviews for a book that's not out yet omg so gonna try and balance it out with 5 stars until I can read it myself.

Dear Author,

You have written excellent stories your fans have read and loved long before your show fans probably were ever even interested in the historical romance genre. So it is a dear request to continue on that path and not write a book based on a show rather than the vice versa.

Sincerely,
One of the earliest fans

”come. hide from the heavens with me.”

i am a changed woman, guys. i haven’t stopped thinking about charlotte and george in days. the selfless romance in this storyline has altered my brain chemistry. my standards have been rasied. my first five star read in two months. i could spend years praising the quotes in this book, and it won’t do them justice. the writing, the love confessions, and the conflicts were nothing but exquisite.

”i will stand with you between the heavens and the earth, i will tell you where you are, do you love me?”

”i love you. from the moment i saw you trying to go over the wall, i have loved you desperately. i cannot breath when you are not near, i love you charlotte.”

this fucking scene has changed literal lives. *my life*

but i don’t want this whole review to just revolve around the romance: the book had multiple povs, and lady danbury’s was the most heartbreaking ever. the racism she and her family endured, being betrothed to a stranger at the age of three, and never getting credit for all she did for her home had me in tears. people of color were denied rights and looked down upon, and the whole time she was just trying to make a change. she deserves the world.

➶-͙˚ ༘✶“I love you, Charlotte.” He took her face in his hands. “My heart calls your name.”

i absolutely loved reading this. i knew exactly what was coming but did i still cry and die? yes, ofc i did. emara and i were absolutely HEARTBROKEN. but in the end, they all live happily ever after 😌 george and charlottle get to travel to see the transit of venus with brims and reynolds five paces behind, and anyone who says otherwise will be reported for MISINFORMATION. 🫶🏼

slight 🚨SPOILERS🚨 down below. if you have not watched the show, go watch that first but otherwise everything i mention also happens in the show.

i would say watch the show before the book because it adds a lot more to the emotional dialogue and you can just HEAR george and char when they confess to each other. the show does dive more into side-plots such as agatha and lord ledger which im thankful we did not get and going back and forth from past to future. but this was an automatic five-star read for us 🤭 we love lottie and farmer george

When Charlotte spoke, the world came alive. She was fierce and stubborn and shockingly forthright. Her intelligence transformed her pretty face into something incandescent. Truly, he did not know a woman could be so beautiful.

charlotte was literally so strong. i do hate to admit first seeing her in season 1 i did not like her much 🫣 but after learning and seeing everything she went through i admire her so much. getting married to someone she never met but then falling in love with him to only lose him to his mental health 💔 it was heartbreaking, but she rose to the occasion every time and proved how much she truly deserved to be queen.

“Chemistry, physics, botany. And especially astronomy. The stars and the heavens. I am quite the farmer, probably would be a farmer if I were not already occupied.”

georgie is literally so bae 😣 the way that my heart constantly broke for him because he constantly put himself through torturous treatments to feel "normal" and out of fear he would hurt charlotte 💔 he deserved the absolute world and the biggest farm possible. seeing him lose himself and that STUPID doctor only harm his health more 😔

“Nobody nobody. I’m nobody but I’ll try. I’ll try I’ll try. I will.” His hands gripped her shoulders, and his eyes were frantic. “I’ll try. I’ll try. Just make it stop. I’ll try. I’ll do it. I’ll do it.”

MY HEART WAS BROKEN. the way he was willing to do anything to feel better but also agreed to the worst torture methods 😞

brims & reynolds are literally my favs. although we slightly got the tiniest bit of more dialogue i still love them. and forever will. the dancing scene forever lives rent-free in my head ❤️‍🩹

last but not least we have agatha danbury. although em and i prefer older danbury, seeing everything she went through at such a young age was sad. promised to marry a man at the age of 3 is baffling but knowing her old ancient ass husband dies was such a slay 🤭 im glad that she was able to pave the way for herself as a widow and for poc in the ton. i didnt like how entitled she went sometimes talking to the queen but when char needed a friend to confide in agatha was that and im happy for that.

overall, i loved reading this! i do hope we get more from julia and shonda for their story AND brims and reynolds' story bc i need more or else i will stay dead 🪦 but i would suggest watching the show before the book but overall i loved it and im still in tears crying.

*thank you to my bae emara for watching and reading this w me 👩‍❤️‍💋‍👩 our tombstones are right next to each other if you guys want to visit them. 🫂*

He’d been holding this back, denying his own heart. She could see it in his eyes as they filled with tears.
“George,” she whispered.

5 stars because the people who already gave this low rating are literal FREAKS of nature

Edit (5/20/23): this was a fantastic addition to the show. I love getting more insight into the characters. That being said, it’s probably more of a 4-star read, but I will keep the rating as is out of spite for the previous freak reviewers

I usually don't rate books I do not finish, because I'm trying to give the book an honest chance and give a rating for the whole thing, not for the first few chapters that failed for me. But, in this case, I'm making an exception.

If you've watched the Netflix series, then there's no need to read this book. Simple as that.

It looks like the author got the movie script with the dialogue and then proceeded to fill in the gaps by describing the movie. That's it. Oh no, the writing isn't exactly bad (thought it feels a bit empty compared to the author's other writings), but everything is exactly as in the movie. Exactly. Even when a character puts emphasis on a certain word, or when they're cutting off mid-sentence, it's precisely as in the movie. Even the scenes end exactly where they ended in the movie, nothing from behind the curtains, not a breath or a blink more.

Usually a book gives more depth to the story, or there are scenes that don't make it to the movie adaptation, or maybe certain topics are treated differently. You basically get different experiences from the book and from the movie, even though they follow the same basic plotline. They have different flavors, if you will; one bears the mark of the author, the other of the director and the whole team that helps bring it to life on the screen.

In this case, the book gives you nothing more than the movie, nothing. There aren't any surprising bits that weren't on the screen, the inner ranting monologues of the characters don't offer you any additional insight. I personally found it hard to empathize with the anybody, I was too distracted by the movie soundtrack playing in my head as I read the same thing I had seen a few days before.

It's not a bad book per se, but I'm sooo disappointed by the lack of imagination and creativity. They published a book that is basically a transcript of a movie. Why bother publishing it at all?

Poorly written fanfiction of real people about how these two slave owners and colonizers cured racism with their love in 18th century England.

So much for Julia Quinn not writing about POCs in Historical Romance because she wants her characters to have happy endings, and POCs don’t get to have happy endings back then, right? Was the money worth it, Julia?

I quite enjoyed this.
I don't much like The Bridgerton novels, though I do like the show.
The novels are mostly full of troubling romance tropes I don't care for, I admittedly don't read much of this type of romance in this genre.
My favorite historical romance author is Beverly Jenkins.
Julia Quinn's comment regarding why she doesn't add POC to her novels told me that she never read Ms. Jenkins novels at all and in respect for Ms. Jenkins, I'm going to pass on rating this particular novel.

Because I've been asked about this: Ms. Quinn's quote is, "I don't think Black people fit in my stories because I write happy endings only." The suggestion by her being that stories with Black folks in them can't be happy. Sitting at the same table with her was Beverly Jenkins who famously writes historical romance with Black main characters that are extremely happy and end on a high note.

Of the Bridgerton novels, my favorite books are Anthony & Kate's story in The Viscount Who Loved Me. I adore Kate.
Also liked Benedict & Sophie's story in An Offer From a Gentleman. I actually liked them both in this novel.

I loathe Colin & Penelope's story. I detested the way Colin treated Penelope. I also hated the message, which seemed to suggest that women need to shrink themselves in order for their longtime crush to find them worthy. That they would need to abandon their own hobbies and interests to be worthy of romantic love. Just yikes.

Even more, I detest EVERYTHING about Eloise & Philip's storyline. I hate this book reveals Marina's dismal destiny. Just horrid. Philip is a turd and Eloise deserved SO much better.

I've overwhelmingly preferred the changes made by the show. In fairness, I only read the books after I binged the 1st season.

This book very closely followed Shonda Rhimes screenplays for the TV show, and I found that it left me free to just enjoy the story.

Julia Quinn's novels are hopelessly dated. Or of the type that supports asshole romantic male love interests at the expense of the women Love Interest's growth and happiness. There's a lot of compromise and understanding, which is always required of the women love interests while the men slowly and imperfectly make tiny almost minute changes, only slightly softening their asshole behaviors. It's such a bullshit sexist outlook. These novels are written for women, why wouldn't the men be worhsipful and pleasing? I much prefer cinnamon roll style male love interests.

Also, I confess that the snob in me is bothered by the errors that Quinn makes when writing the British Aristocracy. I cringe every time Viscount Bridgerton is shown to share a last name with his title😬
Basic research, shit Wikipedia research, would've told her that's not how titles work in the British Aristocracy. I really wish the show had corrected that ludicrous and embarrassing error.

Titles usually relate to land, houses/castles, etc. For example, on Downton Abbey Lord Grantham's last name was Crawley, but it wasn't used. He was born Viscount Downton. In fact, it was his title when he married Cora. She was Viscountess Downton until the death of her father in law. At which time Robert inherited the Earldom and title of Grantham.

More reasonably, Anthony could be Viscount Aubrey after Aubrey Hall, which would make more sense as it's the seat of the county he presumably is Viscount of.
I know much is made of Quinn being Ivy League educated, but it's not reflected in her novels.

I loved that Brimsley & Agatha were POV characters in this. I'm hopeful that the TV series will produce more special prequels like Queen Charlotte with more novels to match.
I'd love a prequel with Violet & Edmund's love story.
With a return by Queen Charlotte's young cast for as I adored India & Arsema in their roles!!!!!!

I pirated this as I have all of Quinn's novels.

This might be one of the only times I say this, but the show ‘Queen Charlotte’ was so much better than the book in my opinion. I felt the romance so much more, and I loved the back and forth from the past and present that was lacking in the book. If I would have read the book before watching the show, maybe it would have loved it more, but I couldn’t help but compare it to the epic show!

Dearest Gentle Reader, This is the story of Queen Charlotte from Bridgerton. It is not a history lesson. It is fiction inspired by fact. All liberties taken by the authors are quite intentional. Enjoy.

I don't care that this a fictionalized period romance about King George III and Queen Charlotte. I fell hard for them. I devoured the NETFLIX series in 72 hours and then I impulsively purchased the book for my Kindle. It was worthwhile.

The novelization is narrated by Queen Charlotte, King George, Brimsley, and Lady Agatha Danbury. Of course, they are all familiar to Bridgerton fans. Unlike the series, the book remains mostly in the 1760's but I was pleased to see that a lot of my favorite scenes from the show were in the book too.

I liked the show so it is expected that I’ll also like the book. But god the book was so much better. I love that the book gave depth to the characters and their relationships more. For instance, I got to see how Reynolds and the George’s relationship was not just a mere servant-master one, but friendship. I loved how Reynolds have always been a friend to George, since they were kids. And how they knew each other’s secrets and chose to keep it to themselves.

Just Charlotte and Just George’s chemistry is just off the charts. I loved how strong Charlotte is and I can’t help but be sad about the time jump when George cannot recognize her anymore. But I guess that’s life, what’s important is that they had a good life together and had experienced true love.

”What odd lives we lead,” Brimsley mused. “When do we get to protect ourselves? Or each other?”

Reynolds kissed in on the cheek. “Hopefully every day. But we never come first.”

Brimsley faked a dramatic sigh. “I suppose if I have to come second, it might as well be to the King.”

have I told you how much I loved Brimsley and Reynolds? Well, I loved their story in the show but the book gave me a better understanding of their thoughts and feelings. Plus I loved how George and Charlotte *secretly* supported their relationship! In addition, I loved how they were so loyal to the king and queen🥺

My thoughts summed up: this was a bit unnecessary.

Don’t get me wrong, I still liked it, especially the supplementary scenes (BETWEEN BRIMSLEY AND REYNOLDS BC OMG), the chemistry was still there and Quinn managed to add small details that I reaaally enjoyed such as Charlotte making up new words and generally having a deeper connection to her German roots. Also, the writing was way better than in the only Bridgerton book I’ve read aka the duke and I (I‘m still traumatized).

But at the same time it was just a repetition of the series, just less emotional. I feel like it’s just Quinn’s writing, it makes the story seem rather hilarious at some points and it just didn‘t FEEL like the show. In some way, I did not have those emotions I had while watching, the scenes felt so short, so cut out (THE EPILOGUE WTF) and tbh the smut scenes?! Nahhhh
The novel should’ve portrayed the emotions of the characters, their inner thoughts MORE but this was just a rewrite of Shonda Rhymes script.
The whole Agatha part fell short, the reason why she rejected Adolphus was completely unreasoned without her affair with Ledger making her realize how important her independence is tbh.
ALSO GEORGE MY BOY! The words were his, but the thoughts just partially- I loved how he talked about Charlotte, but sometimes it just didn’t feel like him :(.

That’s it. It was just not what I wanted.

Pre review:
Listen, I may seem like an elitist selective reader but I’m also a simple woman. You give me historical fiction with a well written love interest, I take historical fiction with a well written love interest.
Also I’m in love with George :(

A solid backstory creation. This was a brilliant addition to the Bridgerton Collection. The flow and storytelling showed immense growth from Julia Quinn, and I'm sure the help of Shonda Rhimes and a professional editing team were able to apply an upper-level polish to this crown of the series.

I loved how all the characters felt real and came to life. Charlotte was strong but also very young and alone. George was inquisitive and hurting. The depiction of his social anxiety, panic attacks, and possibly autism.

You can feel Charlotte's young heartbreaking with her, and can we all just please learn how dang stupid we are at times and how much can be made better in life with the proper communication? If we stopped pushing everyone away and just let them see us all as Just George & Just Charlotte.

Brimsley was a fun POV, and I enjoyed his growing into his position along with Queen Charlotte.

Agatha Dansbury, aka Lady Dansbury! My favorite character of the entire series. You see her grit and determination and the beginning of her building up of her place. I did like that another option was placed before her and how she decided to play it.

I hope to one day find someone who would be too stubborn to give up on loving me too.

The weakest parts for me were the setting and clothing descriptions. I wanted more from this with such a beautiful job that was done with the research into the time period before creating Bridgerton and making the piece come to life. I want someone of that to shine through these pages.

I want more Lady Dansbury and more deformed bunnies.

4.5 Stars.

The way this book broke me just as much as the show did. I am embarrassed to say that i Love King George III and Queen Charlotte as an american bc of this book, but it must be said, they deserve everything.

I would most definitely say this book was perfect, however i do believe if they had added one or two POVs from Reynolds it would’ve made it even better, but otherwise i love all of them.

to conclude i must urge you all to read this absolutely heart shattering piece of literature, and i must beg of you to not disturb me as i rewatch Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, bc i am what? sick. this is my new favorite show and if you have anything to say about it don’t <3

This was true to the TV Series where as the other Bridgerton books were adapted. I understand that some people feel it is too close to the series, but this is because the book was written by Quinn, based on the show, which Shona the co-author developed so it is to be expected. I enjoyed the read and the treatment for the Kings' mental ill health by Dr. Munro was positively barbaric, although probably historically accurate. I also didn't care for Princess Augusta (king George's mum) rubbing Queens Charlotte's cheek to see if her brown skin rubbed off, which is insensitive and horrific. It is a step away from the Bridgerton book formats of over bearing males and females bowing to their whims, which give the Bridgerton books a dated feel. I loved Farmer or just George and Charlotte's relationship, and the death of Lord Danbury whilst on the job was perfect. Agatha Danbury came into her own. Enjoyable historical fiction.

If you thought the series was great, the book is bound to blow you away. There were a few important details that weren’t in the show. For instance, the four months that Queen Charlotte didn’t see King George (after she witnessed his first episode) and when she finally does see him, he’s being treated tormented by Monro — if you disliked Monro in the show, you would LOATHE him in the book.

”Is it that you do not believe that I could love you?” she asked. “Because I do. I love you, George. I love you so much that I will do as you wish.”

All George wanted was to get better and not just for him or his nation.. but for her. He truly loved her as she did him.. she loved him for simply being just George.

”You did tell me the truth. You said you were Just George. And that is who you are. Half King. Half Farmer. But always Just George. That is all you need to be.”

”I cannot breathe when you are not near. I love you, Charlotte. My heart calls your name.” 💌

”I was raised to be his wife,” Agatha said, staring at the wall. “I was taught that my favorite color was gold because his favorite color was gold. I was told my favorite foods were his favorite foods. I read only the books he liked. I learned his favorite songs on the pianoforte. I am drinking this port wine because it is his favorite and therefore it must be mine.”

I loved Agatha’s (lady Danbury) story so much. She had gone through so much and never turned bitter. Can you imagine being just three years old and being promised to marry someone decades older than you? It’s honestly repulsive.

”She took a step. And then another. Walking by herself. On her own. She was her own person. Finally.”

“We would serve them together,” Brimsley said quietly. “A lifetime,” Reynolds murmured. It was the sort of thing men like them never dared to dream of. Like the King and Queen, they too would be together. Have a true partnership. Grow old as one.”

Loved Brimsley and Reynolds’ romance too 😭 thinking back on the scene where Brimsley dancing alone made me question what had happened to Reynolds 💔

Another favorite quote of mine:

”She was a star. She was a comet. She was everything that sparkled in the night sky, brought down to earth by magic the church swore did not exist.”

I watched the series few nights ago. The show was soulful, heart wrenching, beautifully executed with wonderful acting performances by the cast members. The minor characters shine bright and the story is just so perfect.

So then after I was done sobbing, I went ahead and was scrolling all the show content and realized they decided to turn the story into a book. I read the book the following night.

As much as I loved the show, I can't say that about the book. It lacked the soul and heart that was present in the show. I thought I would find more inner turmoil, the mental headspace of the characters. But the book simply felt like video to essay transcription.

In the show, the stories are show in two timelines in parallel. That didn’t happen in the book. I am giving it 2 star. You can easily ignore this book.

Why is this under the Bridgerton's series? I mean it's based on the show and the characters are completely different...

Llorando a mares con la historia tan bonita de estos dos ❤️

4.5⭐️
This had a lot of the same scenes and moments from the TV series on Netflix but it also expanded the story a lot and gave some extra background and insight into different characters. It didn’t flash back and forth between timelines like the show did and I think I enjoyed this format more. I liked getting to see more of Charlotte and George as they grew to know and love each other versus the storyline of the Queen trying to get her children married in the present time that the show featured.
I loved the character of Queen Charlotte. This book gave such a fantastic look into who she is and how she became the Queen everyone knows from the Bridgerton series. She was so strong yet also very patient and understanding. Her relationship with George was so special and their love was so touching.
This made me tear up multiple times. It was sad and emotional but still really heartwarming and sweet.

Okay where to start…. I think my mistake was watching the TV show first and picking up the novel right after. This book read like a manuscript for the TV show. I enjoyed the TV show and I think I would’ve enjoyed this book more, had I read it before I watched. This book says is written by Julia Quinn, but the back says authors notes and list both Julia Quinn and Shonda Rhimes. This book didn’t read like a typical Julia Quinn novel. So it leads me to believe that it’s written more by Shona Rhimes, if not written all by her. Which is a disappointment because I really enjoy Julia Quinn’s writing style and her novels.

Now that I’ve had time to think about this book I’m lowering my rating. It’s still probably my favorite love story this year but was missing that umph in the book.
**************************************************************
“I do not know. Perhaps. Great love can make miracles.” “It can.” And maybe, God willing, it would.

“She was his comet, his shooting star. She sparkled like the heavens, and when she smiled it felt like mathematical equations sliding into place. The world in balance, each side properly weighted. She was everything that was beauty, and everything that was brilliant.”

I love this story so much Charlotte and George are probably my favorite love story/characters of the year. There’s just something about their bittersweet love story especially knowing how it ends. As someone that didn’t enjoy the Bridgeton books, I’m glad I liked this. The writing didn’t feel outdated like Quinn’s other books and I went through a full range of emotions while reading this(thank you Shonda Rhimes).

This is basically the show with the addition of a few plots we get to see what the characters were thinking. Reading George’s and Charlotte’s pov, their love story and what they through broke me, healed me and broke me again. The reason this wasn’t 5 stars was because I didn’t like Agatha’s pov, it was boring and I wanted to get back to the main story. I’m glad that despite the heavy topic in this book there were still moments of fun and comedy because I needed it.

I loved all the new stuff we got that wasn’t in the show, it added so much more to the story. I will say that the actors in the show played these characters so well, I was seeing them and hearing their voices as I read. Anyway I love Brimsley and Reynolds so much. I love Charlotte and George so much I’m sad that I don’t have more of them to read.

I do wonder if my feelings about this book would be different if I hadn’t watched the show first. I don’t think some scene’s especially the last scene of book would have been as impactful if I hadn’t seen the show but idk.

“If what we have is half, then we shall make it the very best half. I love you. It is enough.”

”But the heavens were safe. The sun and the stars and the planets. Meteors and moons. He could not hurt them. And they would never look down upon him with shame.”
