It’s 5 p.m. on a Friday. You have been called to an interview for your dream job. In a stunning office thirteen floors above the city below, you are all alone with the man interviewing you. Everyone else has gone home for the weekend. The interview gets more and more disturbing. You’re feeling scared. Your only way out is to answer a seemingly impossible question. If you can’t . . . what happens next?
I write nerve-shredding thrillers about ordinary situations gone wrong -- the kind of thing that could happen to any of us!
My latest thriller THE INTERVIEW is about a seemingly normal job interview that turns out to be something very different and unexpected. It will be published in February 2022.
I'm also the author of A WINDOW BREAKS, a page-turning thriller that asks the question: what would you do if you woke up at 2 a.m. to hear somebody in your home?
I love to hear from readers and always respond to every email I receive.
Writing as Chris Ewan, I'm also the author of SAFE HOUSE, DARK TIDES, DEAD LINE and LONG TIME LOST, as well as the popular GOOD THIEF'S GUIDE TO ... series of mysteries about globetrotting crime writer and thief-for-hire, Charlie Howard.
THE GOOD THIEF'S GUIDE TO ... novels are warm, witty and perfect for fans of cosy mysteries. I was born in Taunton in 1976 and graduated from the University of Nottingham with a degree in American Studies with a minor in Canadian Literature, then later trained as a lawyer. After an eleven-year spell living on the Isle of Man, I now live in Somerset, England with my wife and two children, where I write full time.
What an elaborate setup to get useful information. I felt no suspense, just wanted something to happen soon. Which was a bit strange, since things did happen, but far too slow especially when I felt it all was a bit ridiculous.
Firstly got to say the writer knows how to write and he has a massively proactive imagination….. However the book was just too unrealistic for me, kinda like an ‘escape room’ but based around this poor lady who is invited for an interview, that is anything but an interview! There are a few basic errors in the story (probably not important but irritated) plus as said the whole premise of the story is very far fetched But yes it was written well and I carried on with it and it ended as bizarrely as it started All that said without question I would read this author again, doesn’t really make sense does it? but there you go 🤗
Let me start by saying I was intrigued by the blurb because let’s face it, interviews are not fun. Especially not when you are applying for your ‘dream job’. Kate Harding is a marketing professional and in marketing, everything has to be perfect. Kate is suffering from a personal tragedy and is not even looking for another job, but somehow she lets herself sent to this gleaming office tower. Perfect, you would say. And yes, when she is left in an office, locked up without any resources and fearing for her life, you want to know what’s happening and how she can save herself. The reason I didn’t like the book much was firstly, because of what I said in the above. In marketing, everything has to be perfect. But at the same time, everything is superficial. It’s all about selling really. Whether it’s an idea (you’ll feel great when you buy our product) or trying to convince you that you really, really need a new and very expensive computer/phone/car each year. I’ve worked in this business too for a few years but I couldn’t do it anymore. (Of course there is useful marketing too, but that’s not what this story is about.) Secondly, the story actually starts slowly and by the time it picked up the pace, I already had lost interest. There are too many things going on and a great deal of those things are very hard to believe. I finished the book because the author has a very engaging style that makes you want to read along although you don’t like the story much. That’s very skilfully done! I hope to read another book by this author, with the same quality of writing but a more interesting story.
Thanks to Netgalley and PanMacmillan for this review copy.
Boring, implausible, way too repetitive, beyond absurd, idiotic.
The premise had actually potential to become something great, but it's obvious the author had nothing but the premise, as the story deteriorates quickly into the absurdity, as the characters are doing the same thing over and over and over again, while the story (is there one, really?) goes nowhere fast, and the characters themselves are so invisible, they don't exist.
1 star. No suspense, no tension, no interesting characters. Just a great premise that got butchered by a horrendous writing style, bland and dumb characters, repetitiveness and a plot that goes nowhere. Can't recommend it at all- not even if the fate of humanity was depending on it. Not unless you have a shit-ton of patience while reading about characters keep doing the same actions every few pages, nonstop.
This is a truly action packed and fast-moving thriller. It starts with Kate Harding arriving at The Mirror, an office block in London. Having suffered some personal, and career, traumas, Kate has been working for a small PR company. However, after being approached by recruitment agent, Maggie, she is convinced to try out for a role as a senior account manager at the leading PR agency of Edge Communications.
Kate starts on the back foot, as she arrives flustered and slightly late. Impressed by the vast new building in Central London, she then finds that the interview is being taken by someone unexpected. Before long, she sits across the desk from her interviewer and, from then on, it felt more like an action film than a novel, as things get seriously out of control.
The reader has some flashbacks and gradual understanding of why the situation that Kate finds herself in is happening, as she is forced to confront her past. If interviews push you out of your comfort zone, then the lead character will find herself having to deal with something far worse than awkward questions and embarrassed silences….
This is more than a little implausible, but if you enjoy books that hurtle at speed, with non-stop action, you will surely enjoy this. I received a copy of the book from the publisher, via NetGalley, for review.
Wow! The Interview is a heart-pounding, action-packed and propulsive thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. I was hooked from the first page and found myself not wanting to put the book down.
I love how the author has woven such an intricate and compelling story based on such a unique and original premise. The events of the book unfold in less than half a day, allowing for a gripping and perfectly-paced read.
The characters are well-developed, with Kate as a strong and smart protagonist. No frustration or suspension of disbelief over her behaviour and actions at all; she thought of so many things I would have never even considered.
There was also twist after twist, some of which left my jaws dropping because I totally didn't see them coming. I love how tiny details that seem innocuous at first end up playing a significant part in the story.
A thrilling ride from start to end!
This is my first book by C.M. Ewan and I can't wait for more. He might just be my new favourite thriller author.
Holy moly this book is nuts. It’s a fast paced, adrenaline fuelled, red herring packed, clue dropping big ball of psychological evaluation with good guys, bad guys, and you will not know what is going on until the author decides it’s time.
Kate has been given the chance to move on with an interview for a dream job with a cutting edge company. Maggie her recruitment agent showing up to boost her morale before setting off to the pub where she will meet her afterwards.
Joel has been hired to conduct this very unusual interview, having a talent of getting to the truth behind generic interview answers. Now I don’t do spoilers in my reviews but let’s just say this all of a sudden took an almighty turn and Kate finds herself in a whole lot of trouble. Trust no one and don’t assume you know who are the good guys and who are the bad guys.
I felt torn with this as I really liked Kate but I found Joel even more intriguing. He is an enigma of a man and while he can get to the heart of things he is a closed book. This had me wanting to know who, why and how from beginning to end and the scary truth lies in uncovering the past.
I buddy read this with Gemma and you can read her thoughts here https://betweenthepagesbookclub.blog/...- we both loved how neither of us really had a clue what was going on and how we didn’t want to stop reading.
If you want a book that is thrilling, fun and full of action then I highly recommend this non stop frenzy of a read.
Oh good lord, I'm never getting the time back which I spent on this book. To be honest, I very nearly gave up on it, a few times along the way, but in the end I skimmed through it to see how it would end. In all fairness, I think I could have walked away from this one without losing any sleep over it really. And maybe, I should have walked away. Having read quite a few crime thrillers, I appreciate that you sometimes have to suspend your disbelief slightly. But The Interview took this to a whole new level. The premise of this book turned from being an intriguing situation to something which was kind of preposterous. The tale got taller, but I realised that I just didn't care enough about the characters for it to matter in the way that it should. All of the characters, including Kate who goes for the interview, seemed very two dimensional to me. So, as she found herself in more and more danger, I really wasn't that bothered for her. This is one that I really can't recommend.
Mind blowing story. I had no idea what I was reading or happening in the beginning but once I got a hold of some twisted scenes, I literally felt goosebumps on my skin. Brilliant done which won’t be a surprise since the author’s last book was a huge page-turner for me as well. Chilling , scary even and non stop adrenaline rush.
Oh boy did I enjoy this book! The definition of a keep you up all night, read in one sitting thriller. This story had me holding my breath throughout as the action never let up. Well plotted and written, tense and intense. I was expecting a psychological thriller and this more than delivered with parts reading like an action packed thriller. I can really see this working well as a movie. I enjoyed how we got the perspectives of all the characters and the chapters just flowed so well into one another you had to keep reading. I couldn't find anything I didn't like or enjoy, so it's 5 stars from me!
Thanks to Pan Macmillan and Netgalley for the ARC I received in exchange for an honest review
It’s 5:03 pm when you arrive for your interview. You desperately want this job. At 5:17 pm you’re being led to an office where you meet the person who will be interviewing you. You sit down nervously and begin your interview. By 6:21 pm you know something is horribly wrong with this interview. And by 12:45 am your life will be forever altered - never to be the same again.
Oof, what a read! This book is a masterclass in locked-room suspense, with tension that builds relentlessly from chapter to chapter. Just when you think things can’t get any worse, they do - and it keeps getting worse and worse right up until the last sentence of this book.
The FMC is put through the wringer in one single night. I loved her energy and her determination of never giving up, never quitting. Even when all the odds were against her, she still found a way to fight through them. Every. Single. Time. Every setback only fueled her tenacity - she simply refused to quit.
Fast-paced, action-packed, and full of suspense, Ewan has crafted a nearly perfect thriller that’s impossible to put down. I recommend all his books.
Another promising story, gripping thriller blurb but just a mere FLASH IN THE PAN. The premise was creepy talking about interviews gone wrong , quite an everyday thing right? But only, here its not a rejection that makes it go wrong but SOMETHING ELSE, I am eager to read it in one sitting, but the book gets repetitive yet riveting but the repetitive part being a greater share . Unfortunately , the kindle falls on my face because it gets soporific and I know that i cant read more or it will be painful to finish and so I DNF it.
I thought this was going to be amazing and it started so strong I honestly thought wow what an amazing storyline! What amazing writing! I was absolutely gripped.
Unfortunately it went downhill very fast. At the half way mark the storyline became absolutely absurd there wasn’t plot holes instead these were massive craters. I’ve finished the book and I remain absolutely lost it just made no sense. It was ridiculous and a massive disappointment. Im giving 2 stars solely for the first half of the book.
Thank you Anne Cater for this fab read! This book was simply a WOW for me. I loved everything about this book. I found myself racing through this unable to drag myself away. When you reach for this book, you can expect a gripping tale that is guaranteed to keep you transfixed as you flip through the pages. Imagine heading off for an interview for your dream job, situated in a beautiful, modern building late on a Friday afternoon, only to discover that this interview is not exactly what you expected. You are faced with questions that have life or death consequences. C M Ewan is another “new-to-me” author. I enjoyed this book so much that I did a little online shopping late at night as soon as I closed this book. The author manages to draw you into the story very quickly and leaves you holding your breath as you race to reach the end. I found myself completely engrossed. I loved the characters and found the storyline to be unique. This book is full of suspense, and I found myself feeling Kate’s emotions. The Interview is a gripping, edge of your seat read that grabs hold of you immediately and never leaves you a moment to catch your breath. Kate is called to an interview for a PR position at Edge Communication late on a Friday afternoon. This position will provide her with the challenge she needs and is guaranteed to keep her busy, which is exactly what Kate needs. When she arrives for her appointment, she is informed that there has been a change; she will not be interviewed by Amanda Palmer as arranged, a man named Joel White will be conducting the interview. This immediately leaves Kate a little back footed. Being shown into a glass cube, located in the centre of an open-plan office, with the door closed and only the good-looking Joel White in front of her, Kate is quickly rattled. However, when the questions become increasingly personal, and Joel stops being polite and friendly Kate feels something is not right. Her discomfort intensifies when she finds that they are all alone, all the other employees have left and Joel is extremely intense. How badly does she want this job? Kate finds that this interview is about more than a job. If she refuses to answer his questions, what will the consequences be? This was a book I managed to get lost in. It did not have a single dull moment. I found myself eagerly flipping the pages curious to find out where this story was headed. The more that was revealed, the more I wanted to know. This is a clever, creative tale with a twist at the end I never saw coming. Poor Kate was left to face one surprise after the other. Kate Harding is a woman who crawls into your heart as you flip these pages. This once strong, well balanced young woman knew exactly where she was going. However, after tragedy strikes, her world is shattered and she is left broken. When she finally has to courage to attempt rebuilding her life, she is faced with the worst possible situation and discovers how much in the dark she has been for the last fifteen months. The author did a fabulous job sharing Kate’s emotions. I found myself sharing her sadness, fear, anger and determination from page to page. I loved this woman. This book is a five-star read which I cannot recommend highly enough. No doubt, The Interview is my book of the month for February – (I don’t normally give that away before posting my wrap up article – but this book is brilliant!) Thriller fans, brace yourselves – this book will swallow you whole. You are going to be holding your breath from start to finish and loving every minute. Do not miss out, add this title to your TBR – C M Ewan will leave you WOW’ED with this one. https://featzreviews.com
It is so funny that I picked up this book. Recently I have been on a huge kick of watching summaries of escape room-style horror movies, and that's essentially what this book is! Not that there's clues and stuff for the character to figure out, but the main character is trapped in one location for most of the book and needs to try to get out and survive.
This book was a lot of fun! It kept me entertained and at the edge of my seat. I stayed up way too late reading it and was very tired the next day at work. The protagonist was pretty intelligent given that she was just a regular person. I don't think I would have done any better had I been her. However, I don't think I'll remember this book a year from now. It was fun but it's not the most memorable. The characters were a bit band and the ending was only okay. I'm really glad I read this because I had a great time and I'll definitely be looking into the author's other books, but I can't give this a full 5 stars.
This book had the potential to be good. The main character wasn't very developed. To me, she was just there to be the damsel in distress for the rest of the book's plot. And the plot twists were revealed so early on that the book just kind of dragged on.
The most interesting character was Joel. His job and analysis of people was similar to the show "Lie to Me" which was interesting. I would be more interested in a book about how he got into his job. There were some points in the book that I found to be a little too convenient. And the ending was a little confusing since it was written from the pov of someone who was half delirious.
The premise is really fun - someone goes to a skyscraper for an interview, the interview is a hoax, they end up being taken captive. The problem is that bit only takes 10% of the book. And then the rest of it is an increasingly repetitive story of people chasing each other round the skyscraper, interspersed with a weird storyline about the interviewee’s deceased (OR IS HE?) husband knowing too much about design flaws in planes made for an international airline. Underwhelming.
I wish I could give this book more than five stars as it was brilliant. It starts off slowly and then it just builds and builds until I couldn’t put it down. There were so many twists in this that it surprised me all the way through. This would make a great film let’s hope someone takes up the hint.
This was an interesting idea and an OK book. Wouldn't call it gripping tho. I feel like that term is a bit overused and perhaps misused in regard to thrillers. Plot was a bit outlandish and the writing style was along the lines of "this happened and then that happened".
Ok I’m really unsure about how I feel about this book. It’s a real slow burn and is a long one but I just felt like I couldn’t put it down. It’s a locked in kind of scenario and I was pretty intrigued to start with but then it went off a bit and I was wondering where it was going but at the same time I just couldn’t put it down. I think this could of been made so much better if it was shortened down. Like the whole office scenes could of been so much shorter and sped up
I absolutely tore through the last hundred pages of this book, but that didn’t make up for the first 350+.
I expected something psychological, maybe a little more existential. The middle 300 pages of the book simply detail the main character trying to physically ram her way through walls and windows, over and over. I wouldn’t have finished if it wasn’t a book for a book club I’m in.
Besides this, the writing was just annoying to me. It detailed annoying physical details that I often skimmed over, and distracted from the plot (which, again, moved INCREDIBLY slowly). Sentences like “A bolus of phlegm in my throat. Fear like firecrackers going off inside my skull.” just wound up irking me instead of helping me feel connected to Kate.
However I gave the book an extra star because I did genuinely enjoy the last bit of it—the bit with a plot. In the end, I think if this 438 page book had been cut down to 250 pages, it really could have been amazing.
3.5 stars This is a good read but quite an unbelievable story. Kate wants more from her career and is persuaded to go for an interview with a top London company. The interview is not real but it’s too late for Kate to get out by the time she realises. She’s locked in a room with no way out and has no idea why. It’s not clear to the reader why she’s being held captive until quite a way into the story and this frustrated me a bit. This is a clever story on one hand, but also far fetched on the other. A good read but not as gripping as I’d hoped. Thanks to Pan MacMillan and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
Kate Harding has applied for a new job and has an interview in a brand new modern office block at 5pm on a Friday evening. She’s very nervous which is to be expected, but when the interviewer starts asking unexpectedly awkward questions she starts to wonder what she’s got herself into. Realising that she is on her own on the 13th floor in a situation that is making her feel steadily uncomfortable, Kate starts to think the interview isn’t for the dream job she applied for but for a rather more sinister reason…
Oh my-what a rollercoaster ride The Interview is! Breathtakingly tense throughout with short sharp chapters keeping you on the edge of your seat, I thoroughly enjoyed this gripping storyline. The setting plays an important part here as the building presents itself as the focal point for all the action from the very first page. I was reminded of the film Die Hard in that respect especially when Kate started looking at ways to escape the situation she found herself in! Plot wise, The Interview didn’t go in the direction I was expecting and there were a few gasp out loud moments for me especially with a couple of twists early on.
This is definitely a fast paced perfectly plotted thriller with the storyline taking central stage over character development but that doesn’t stop you caring about what happens to Kate or others who become involved in her terrifying ordeal. I became completely entangled in the twisty, tension filled drama and thoroughly enjoyed every minute.
I really wanted to love this book as the premise sounded really interesting and it was narrated by one of my favourite narrators Georgia Maguire, however, I really didn't enjoy it at all.
I always try to leave a little bit of a positive in a review even if I didn't enjoy a book but the only one I can add to this review is that I did finish the book as I did have an inkling of curiosity to see how the absurdity was wrapped up. In all honesty, it was the fantastic narration of Maguire that managed to keep me holding on until the end.
Now for the bad bits, unfortunately for me there were many. A completely illogical and implausible plotline that had huge gaping holes along with a heavy handed and repetitive writing style made this one of the least enjoyable books I've consumed in quite a while. How an author describes the sweat on a characters brow three times within about 30 seconds is beyond me!
I seem to be among the minority for this one as there are a lot of 4/5 star reviews, many seem to have enjoyed the sense of bewilderment but too much was lacking so I couldn't possibly recommend it to read.
What an exciting thriller! A very tense and intense pageturner. One of the few occasions when I can actually call a read exhilarating. Review to follow closer to the publication date on For Winter Nights.
I like the books that are fast, with this book you are always on the edge. It was a book that really surprise me andcit happen really rarely. The main characters are great and it is really a good suspance, thriller and mystery with a romance as well.
Thank you Netgalley and Pan Macmillian for this arc copy.
