But after years of failed infertility treatments and adoptions that have fallen through, it seems like motherhood is not in her future. That is, until her personal assistant Monica makes a generous offer that will make all of Abby's dreams come true.
Or all of her nightmares.
Because it turns out Monica isn't who she says she is. The woman now carrying Abby's child has dark, twisted secrets.
And she will stop at nothing to get what she wants.
#1 New York Times, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, Publisher's Weekly, and Amazon Charts bestselling author Freida McFadden is a practicing physician specializing in brain injury who has penned multiple Kindle bestselling psychological thrillers and medical humor novels. She lives with her family and possessed cat in a centuries-old three-story home overlooking the ocean, with staircases that creak and moan with each step, and nobody could hear you if you scream. Unless you scream really loudly, maybe.
Note that I am maxed out on friends, so I apologize in advance that I can't friend anyone back!
I almost want to write an unwarned spoiler here just to save someone the time…. But I won’t… What I WILL say is this: I’ve read at least 5 books by Frieda and I think at this point I can confidently say… this will probably be my last. The plots of her books are always what draw me in… that coupled with what always guarantees to be a fast paced, page turner — I always truly, truly, WANT to enjoy her books but alas… the way she writes her characters, particularly the women is always just so… mind-numbingly… STUPID. Like unbelievably so. The point of a psychological thriller is of course meant to have you questioning everyone, even your own instincts but the way she writes it is never realistic. She makes her characters ENTIRELY too naive every time just for the sake of frustrating the reader. I get it, books are supposed to evoke emotion but after reading multiples and getting a feel for her writing style… the bread and butter of the “psychological” part is simply making the scenarios so left field that you end up wanting to scream. The only reason I finished this book was to see how it ended. We got a nice little plot twist in the end but it still was so far fetched I rolled my eyes… and this coming from someone who enjoys reading sci-fi and fantasy as well. The only “thriller” part of this book was being done.
And Yikes… I know this is harsh but… I’m so irritated with this book. I would only recommend her books to those who are not avid readers of the genre… its faced paced and crazy enough to keep the occasional reader’s attention… but if you are a hard core psy-thriller reader, save your nerves.
Already from the start you feel like this is something new and exciting. Haven’t read any psychological thrillers with this angle before, and that made me pay extra attention while reading. The story was as always fast-paced, and even if the characters weren’t developed well, I didn’t mind it. The twists in this book just kept coming! I felt like I was in a tennis match with no idea where the ball would land. The tension kept building, and I loved the height of it.
This book never got less ridiculous. The surrogate comes out the gate with clear “tryna-steal-yo-man” tendencies. Calls husband Sammy, keeps pregnancy test, calls it “our baby.” Like girl. Helen Keller could see it. Then surrogate and husband go to an ultrasound without the wife and she’s not instantly like, ummmmm bitch, what? THEN husband and surrogate go get coffee together. Wife can’t go because she’s so busy at work. Very next scene? Wife at lunch with a friend. WHAT. Then husband starts acting atrocious, even going so far as to believe the wife is on meth and not being framed. Threatens to take her rights away to “his baby” if she doesn’t go to rehab. Home boy shows all signs of a terrible husband. But nooooo Sam is so hot and so great. Girl, the bar is below hell. Anyway, turns out surrogate had this whole insane plan. Tries to kill wife. Doesn’t, but shoots herself. But dont worry!! They were able to get the baby out in time! So thank goddddd, wife finally gets a baby, who cares what it cost?? And she got to keep her hotty math teacher, despite him treating her like dog shit, hooray!! Did it keep me captivated? Yes. Will i read more from the author? Yes lmao

This book was okay. I don't mind predictable books, it's still, usually, some ah ha moments, but this book had NONE. The husband had me mad the entire book. You believe a total stranger over your wife you've known for OVER a decade? Seriously!? On what planet would that ever happen? Also the wife was soooooooo naive. Red flags just a-wavin in the air and she actin like Stevie Wonder. I gave it 3 stars because it was a nice pace and drama happened pretty quickly. It lost 2 stars for having stupid characters and being too predictable.
One thing Freida can do is write a dumb ass female character and she made no exception in the surrogate mother! I dare you to try not to use any expletives while reading this book! It’s IMPOSSIBLE! The main character Abby made every stupid decision known to human kind, would question it and yet do the complete opposite to rectify it! This book was so entertaining but also had me highly stressed!!! 😂😂😂
THE SURROGATE MOTHER is a psychological thriller by bestselling author Freida McFadden. Having loved “The Housemaid”, I was eager to starting reading all of her standalone novels. As an avid reader of psychological thrillers, I can only say, treat yourself and read all of her books! Her books are so good!
Her Standalone Books Include: Baby City (2015) The Surrogate Mother (2018) (Read) The Ex (2019) The Perfect Son (2019) The Wife Upstairs (2020) One By One (2020) Want to Know a Secret? (2021) The Locked Door (2021) Do Not Disturb (2021) Do You Remember? (2022) The Housemaid (2022) (Read) The Inmate (2022) Never Lie (2022)
This is my review of The Surrogate Mother.
Abby had a good job in advertising, a great marriage to husband, Sam, a math professor, and she came from a well-off family.
But Abby was missing one thing, to make the picture complete…Abby wanted a baby more than anything.
After years of failed infertility treatments and adoptions that had fallen through, it seemed like motherhood was not in her future. But then her personal assistant Monica made a generous offer that made all of Abby's dreams come true.
Monica offers to be Abby’s surrogate. Sam and Abby will compensate Monica by sending her to graduate school. After much consideration, Abby and her husband except Monica as a surrogate. The plan is now in place and Abby couldn’t be happier!
This novel has so many twists, that it kept me on my toes. Another great book by McFadden! I am so impressed with this author that I will continue to read all of her novels.
When a woman is desperate for a child, anything can happen.
And "anything" is exactly what happens in Freida McFadden's "The Surrogate Mother."
Although "The Surrogate Mother" was not my favorite "surrogate thriller" and/or "Freida book", it was a compelling, fast-paced. and entertaining drama that was intriguing from beginning to end.
Yes, it was predictable and yes, it had many "this would never happen" implausible moments.
But it featured author Freida McFadden's classic misdirections, twists, and unreliable narrators -- making this quick-and-easy read a winner.
I listened to the audiobook and narrator Alyson Crawchuk did a superb job with the narration.
This is my 7th book by author Freida McFadden and I am a fan.
If you’re looking for a thriller with predictable plot lines and maddeningly naive characters, this may be a book you’d want to read. I could hardly get through half of it without being so irritated by the repeated cycle of poor decision-making and childlike inner thoughts of the protagonist that I had to put it down. I laughed out loud at the cheesy and overplayed “villain explains her rationale and intent” ending with dialogue that made me cringe. I think the general plot line could be interesting, but it wasn’t my cup of tea. I think the most surprising thing about this book is the 4.3 stars it currently has.
This is my 13th book by Freida McFadden and I have to say I laughed out so loud while listening to this book. This gripped me from the very beginning and the ending was epic! And the MANY twists near the end? Holy cow!!! Freida is a genius! Another fantastic book by a fantastic author!
Abby and Sam have been trying to conceive a baby for years with no luck so they are trying private adoption but the teen mother has now changed her mind and backed out and Abby is just devastated. When Abby's new personal assistant hears of her boss's heart-sick news she happily volunteers to be a surrogate with the provisions that the couple pay her way through graduate school and all her rent and expenses after she leaves her job. This sounds like a win, win situation for both women so they happily draw up a written contact to protect both parties. What could possibly go wrong?
This was a fun and entertaining suspenseful domestic drama about a woman who desperately wants a newborn baby which most women can relate to. This career woman is the queen of making very poor decisions in her personal life yet she is still a likeable character but very naive and trusting. I liked the husband in the beginning but he made quite a few bad decisions himself that (imo) were unforgivable. The villainous star of the story was the assistant (Monica) who Abby should have been able to see the red flags right away. With all this said it was still a fun ride to see all the devilish twists and turns that would continuously occur throughout the book. I would recommend to anyone who enjoys a fast paced sinister drama although this is a storyline that has been played out many times in books and television and movies with some of the same twists.
I have given this book a rating of 3 ENTERTAINING 🌟🌟🌟 STARS!!
Wow! Ms. McFadden has done it again. This first sentence of this psychological thriller grabbed my attention and it didn’t let go!
“In the next twenty-four hours, I will be arrested for first-degree murder.”
You can count on the author for a fast, overdramatic rollercoaster ride with an abundance of suspense.
Abby and Sam can’t have a baby of their own and they’ve waited years to adopt. They finally have the perfect adoption setup. They were so close to getting the infant they want so badly but the mother unexpectedly changes her mind at the last minute.
They are both crushed. Then Abby’s assistant makes a kindhearted offer to be their surrogate. It seems too good to be true. After careful consideration, they agree. They all sign a contract, everything seems airtight and starts perfectly. But it doesn’t last long. Anything that seems too good to be true usually is!
Anyone who is considering using a surrogate should read this book…or maybe not!
this one had me feeling murderous because it was frustrating. there wasnt much beyond what was given in the synopsis. i enjoyed the story more after the “enemy” was confirmed. i was mostly annoyed though. the female narrator was so dense and slow to act. i was impatiently waiting.....
she had her suspicions, but she didnt try anything to validate or disprove them until she was falsely accused of murder. 💀 also, if i were her, i’d divorce her husband (for not believing her) and let him raise the devils spawn on his own. serves him right. just one more thing how this lady is an idiot.
The more books I read from Freida McFadden, the more unsure I get which one is the best. I have the feeling, I need to rearrange the order of my liking, once I am done with all, because Never Lie and Do not Disturb seem to stick the most so far.
3,5⭐ rounded up! Now, The Surrogate mother. Again a very enjoyable easy thriller. Very easy and quick read. One PoV with Abby, who is a successful career woman in the marketing corporate world with a perfect mathematician professor husband. They would do anything for a child, as Abby is incapable of having them. The kind secretary of Abby, Monica jumps in and offer to be a surrogate mother of their baby, where Sam would be the father and Monica the mother and surrogate mother as well, since Abby`s eggs are not healthy. This situation leads to many confusion, misunderstanding and manipulation. Why would Monica offer them this opportunity? Strange things start to happen in the business life and private life of Abby..
Nice story, easy read, sometimes a little bit too easy. I prefer more PoVs and more dimensions/timelines. The twist at the end was nice, however easily predictable. All in all it is a 3.5 ⭐ rounded up, because it helped my shut down my brain and relax. Despite of the fact, that it was for my taste a too easy read and had a very poor kick start, it sucked me in around page 50 and I wanted to keep reading because I hated this little b*tch so much. So the author reached his goal! Nice 1-2 nights reading.
My Freida books so far in order of liking: 📔Place 1: One by One - I really enjoyed this one :) -> similar to the "In the Dark", which is even better than One by One 📔Place 2: Never Lie AND The Ex (I cannot decide) 📔Place 4: The Housemaid 📔Place 5: Do not disturb 📔Place 6: The Perfect Son AND The Surrogate Mother (I cannot decide) 📔Place 8: The Locked Door AND Do You Remember? (I cannot decide) 📔Place 10: Brain Damage - I really dislike this, false advertising, Brain Damage has nothing to do with psychological thriller.
Note for myself: I stopped reading it for 5 days, because my husband was in hospital and I was alone at night. I realized I do not really like reading thrillers or scary books completely alone in the house haha:) So I started a series: Big Love, where the issues of a polygamous family were portrayed - was an interesting one. I was glad that my husband was back after a rough week and I was able to dig in again. Am I the only one who is scared from thriller at night, when she is alone? I must say, I only read at night, because I am maxed out with my corporate career, voluntary work, spinning coach part time job at weekend etc.
How does this have such a high rating ? I couldn't wait to finish this. Poor writing and unlikeable characters and legit the worst dialogue. Never again, from this author.
As with all previous books by Freida McFadden that I have read by now, this one was a not-put-down fast read too.
Abby has a loving husband and a good job but only wants a baby she cannot conceive. They are planning to adopt a baby but at the last moment, the young mother changes her heart and refuses to give it to adoption.
Monica is Abby's assistant and she offers to help Abby and San and become a surrogate mother for them. Abby's happiness doesn't have limits and she doesn't know that her big problems only start.
The book is easily read and events have twisted and unexpected turns that keep us, readers, breathless and turning page after page fast to find what happens next.
Spoiler? I haven’t finished this but I just know the letter opener is the murder weapon. Who gives their spouse an engraved letter opener for their anniversary?? And she accidentally cots herself with it (blood evidence!). This could not be more obvious. I’ll come back and apologize if I’m wrong. 😏
Sidebar- we get it…the husband is perfect. We don’t need to be beaten over the head with this.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️I really loved this book! Freida has done it again folks. She has yet to write a book, I didn’t either like A LOT or LOVE! She is by far one of my favorite authors and I will always recommend her books to anyone. This book will be no exception. This book was my second to last book that I have left to read of all her books. (Not counting the medical humor ones, I still has those to get to. Thank God 🙏🏻) But I only have Suicide Med to go and then I’m done. It’s very sad. I’ve been trying to save them, so I don’t run out and would always have one of her books left to read. But, I can only go so long before I need another Freida fix. 🤣 And I’m so sad, I’ve come so close to the end. It’s getting real and I don’t like it. So Freida, you have to keep writing those books okay. 😉 Her books are fast paced and such a fun, wild ride with twists and epilogues that will blow your mind. 🤯 If you’re not familiar with this book, it’s about a girl named Abby who is married to Sam. They have been trying to have a baby for quite some time, but unfortunately, have been unsuccessful in their attempts. They have tried IVF and adoption, but they never worked out for one reason or another. So, A young woman, Monica, Abby’s assistant actually, makes Abby an offer she can’t refuse. Monica offers to carry their child for them. To be their surrogate mother. They were skeptical at first, but ultimately agreed. Well, you can just imagine how wild and out of hand things could get with this scenario. It’s just such great domestic thriller. I’m not going to say anything else except to read this book. It’s such a fun read. I turn to my Freida books when I want a definite exciting read from start to finish. This was definitely one of them. This book was ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 stars for me! Now, I can’t wait for her new book, The Co-Worker to come out. I’ve put a request in on NetGalley. Still have my fingers crossed for that approval. 🤞🏻🤞🏻
What Freida books do you still have left to read? Or have you finished them all?
This book had me angry during the whole read! The lead female character was portrayed as stupid and naive as I've noticed is a trend in Freida's books. Plot was predictable from the start. It kept me reading because I was so irritated. Glad this one's over.
Was not sure if I would like this or not as the story seemed very predictable from the get go. However I really really ended up enjoying this one, another great Freida book with some twists that caught me off guard!
Another fast and gripping read, with the same type of characters: the successful but extremely naive protagonist, the hot guy with a great butt, the evil mind next door… and plenty of twists. Regardless, I was enthralled from the beginning until the end, thanks to the excellent performance in the audiobook (but the sound quality was inferior), hence my rating. A very entertaining popcorn thriller (just ignore the flaws and you may have a blast).
I think I may be mentally ready to review this book now. First I want to say this book literally shook me to my core. The roller coaster of emotions was enough to wreak havoc on my soul but the sheer anxiety alone, was devastating to me. I felt love, extreme anger and frustration and then the anxiety was almost crippling to me. Thinking about the situation still makes me uneasy. The worst part for me was when Sam starts to believe the lies and takes Monica’s word over his own wife’s who he’s known for YEARS over someone he’s known a few months “supposedly”.
Sam and Abby have an extremely loving, happy and supportive marriage. Almost picture perfect other than Abby is a bit of a workaholic. They’re ready to begin their family. Sam has been wanting children since they got married, largely due to him losing his own father while he was very young. His father died at age 40 from a heart attack and Sam wants to be able to see his children grow up unlike his own dad.
Abby has made a very good career for herself and after putting Sam off for several years to build her career, she wants desperately to finally give Sam what he wants. The problem is after a miscarriage, and trying IVF for over a year. Abby learns she has a hostile or inhospitable uterus as well as her eggs not being in good condition, basically unviable. This destroys Abby and leaves her feeling like a failure as a woman and cracking her confidence.
They decide to adopt and have met someone that will be putting her baby boy up for adoption upon delivery. However, the day that her best friend and coworker, Shelly, throws her a baby shower at the office; Sam comes to see Abby at her job to deliver some devastating news. The adoption has fallen through due allegedly to the mother deciding she wants to keep her baby. Abby and Sam are are destroyed by this news. Abby more so than she thought possible.
After several days, Monica, Abby’s assistant, volunteers to be a surrogate for Abby. Young Monica already reminds Abby of herself when she was younger and even resembles her. Abby is leery of this but so desperate that she thinks it could work. The two women work out the details and then Abby discusses the possibility with Sam. Sam is adamant in in his rejection of this plan. He wants them to just adopt an older child in need of a loving family. Abby manages to get Sam to agree to at least meeting Monica and discussing the plan because of the timing factors. Sam is getting close to 40, although he’s in excellent physical shape, getting older scares him. An adoption can take years after jumping through the requirements involved in adopting and the layers of red tape that can take years. While surrogacy can put a baby in their home in about ONE year.
Sam agrees to the meeting only slightly less reluctant but by the end of the dinner meeting, he finds Monica adorable, loves that she likes Quentin Tarantino as much as he does but the deal sealer is her love of math since Sam is a doctor of mathematics and professor at the the college. Shelly, Abby’s best friend warns her this is a very bad idea. Shelly has even seen Monica eavesdropping outside of Abby’s office and tells her so.
To say that this surrogacy plan is a bad idea is the understatement of a lifetime. Especially when the surrogate may be mentally unstable. Once Monica is confirmed pregnant, things begin to happen in Abby’s life that are unexplainable. Abby’s life is in tatters and quickly crumbling to nothing. Abby feels as though she’s not only losing her mind, but her job and husband as well. Abby’s life is turned completely upside down and is at risk of being arrested for a murder that she didn’t commit and is being framed for.
