When a scaredy-housecat is home alone for the first time, he and his furry friends are forced to face monsters and their fears on a quest to save the day. This middle-grade graphic novel series is filled with silly jokes, adventure, and a whole lot of fun.
One house, three cats, and a lot of trouble!
Buster has only one job: keep the house safe. Too bad he is a massive scaredy-cat. When his owner goes away and he suddenly finds his home filled with monsters, Buster has the biggest challenge he’s ever faced. Can he learn to be brave before his owner gets back?
In the first volume of a hijinks-filled graphic novel series, the colorful artwork and hilarious characters will keep you laughing until the very end.
Super cute and funny! My kids loved it. They laughed out loud many times. The illustrations are colorful and goofy. Cat loving kids who also like a bit of sci-fi humor will totally enjoy this.
This was really sweet and silly, and it got surprisingly poignant and emotional towards the end as the metaphors came to light about the house spirits and how they were affecting Buster's human's mental health. I loved the implication that housecats are tiny superheroes who run around busting up the sources of our depression or anxiety! While mental illness is obviously more nuanced than always being solved with cuddles from a cat, I know my girls have helped me through so many bad days that I could easily see them as kicking the butts of some mean little house spirits around here.
There were a few things that I wish we'd gotten more information on, but I hope we will in future installments (like what was in that letter? And why haven't Chauncey and Nova gone home?!). I read this with my 6-year-old and he loved it so much that he was beyond excited to find out there will be a sequel, so I've already pre-ordered book 2 for us! 🥰
This was really sweet! Even though it's probably an oxymoron, I still like this can almost be described as a very gentle Warrior Cats. I can easily imagine a lot of elementary aged kids getting really, really into this story of silly yet spooky spirits, a sweet and simple kitten, and the wise & cynical tough street cat duo! While I was hoping for a bit more at the end, with the dual reveals, knowing this is an ongoing series lets me hope the lore will keep going!
Housecat Trouble is the first book in this graphic novel series. It is perfect for older elementary school and younger middle school age children. Vividly colorful the art work is simplistic but I do believe with all the action the book contains it'll keep the attention of children. An indoor housecat is alone but doesn't have a chance to get lonely as he meets two street cats who fill him in on what to look out for, house spirits. What ensues is the three cats having the time of their lives and getting in some crazy and hectic situations. Will this scaredy cat who is used to being a pampered indoor kitty be up for the dangers of crows, monsters and more and be able to return home unharmed in time for dinner? Cute, clever and recommended!

Cute! At first, I wasn't sure what I thought of the art style, but it definitely grew on me. And the idea that cats defend their humans from spirits we can't see by destroying our stuff is both funny and sweet.
I read this with my eight year old daughter and she thought it was cute. It was fun reading about how the cats saved the humans from the evil spirits while they were away.
Thanks Netgalley and publisher for the digital copy in exchange for my honest review!
At the end of last year, I decided to read the many manga and graphic novels about cats that started showing up on our order sheets. Most of them weren't for me, even though I own cats and read graphic novels. But some of them were fun.
I also read and enjoy all-ages books targeted at middle readers. I mostly read them so I can recommend them to parents and kids, but I also enjoy them when they're well-told and/or drawn.
This is a paercectly fine, I guess, silly middle reader book about a cat whose owner leaves (they don't die or anything tragic, they go away to visit family for a day), and the adventure they have with "spirits" as soon as they're on their own.
I hated it. It was way too twee for me. But I'm not a ten year old excited about brightly colored books about talking cats, so I'm not the intended audience. But I always feel like, if a book is good enough, it will grab me even if I'm not who the author was intending to write to.
So if you have a pre-teen who likes brightly colored graphic novels and silly pseudo-sci-fi shenanigans, you should go check this out, they might love this. Or, if you're the type of reader who, after a tough day, needs a little meaningless fluff (again, brightly colored fluff), then this might be for you, too. It was not for me.
This is a fun graphic novel that is perfect for the middle grade crowd, especially the ones that love animals [and monsters] and are also looking for stories to remind themselves how to be brave and how often its better to work with others to fight off those things that scare you the most. A very cute story about being brave and making friends. The illustrations were initially off-putting for me, but they grew on me and by the end, I really enjoyed them and found them fun. Kids of all ages will really enjoy this one.
Thank you to NetGalley, Mason Dickerson, and Random House Children's/Random House Graphic for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
What a great book! I really enjoyed Housecat Trouble. Don't be fooled by the cover, this is filled with action, adventure, awesome friendships and gangs of crows and dogs. Buster, a housecat, has house spirits and they will take over his house if they aren't removed. With the help of Nova and Chauncey, a pair of stray cats, he sets on an adventure to find shadeberries. And they happen to be the only repellent to these spirits. You'll be at the edge of your seat till the very end! Can't wait for the next book! These illustrations are so colorful and fun. I loved them so much! The kitties are super cute and there's even a little tutorial on how to draw a cat at the end.
A little bit sci-fi, a lot cute. I really enjoyed this little adventure following Buster trying to exorcise some malicious spirits from his house while his owner is out. He gets help from a couple of street cats (Chauncey and Nova) and his feline instinct grows stronger as he steps outside his comfort zone. There were times when it felt a little convoluted (I put it down for a day and had to backtrack a few pages remember what was happening) but not outrageously so. More like ambitious world-building. The art is so heckin' cute and I love that there's a little guide in the back for how to draw cats.
Really glad I have a kid to buy kids' graphic novels for because otherwise I probably wouldn't read as many cute colorful books with silly adventures like this one, and honestly, my life is better for it. Plus, kitties.
Housecat Trouble was a delightful read following a house cat that pairs up with a couple of strays to deal with the monsters that have taken over his home.
When Buster is left home alone for the first time, he plans to spend the day relaxing before his human returns. But when monsters appear and take over his home, Buster is forced to flee. After two strays offer their assistance in dealing with the monsters, Buster is happy for the help as he's a bit of a scaredy-cat. But when faced with a tough choice, Buster will need to learn to be brave if he wants to save his home.
The illustrations in this book are wonderful with bright, vivid colors and adorable animals. The backgrounds are nicely detailed but not overly so to the point they pull you away from what's going on. The plot is fast-paced and a ton of fun with the perfect adventure storyline to keep you entertained. With just the right amount of action, this book would be perfect for readers who are newer to adventure stories. The strays that assist Buster, Chauncey and Nova, are an absolute riot and I loved hearing about their past antics. Their storyline does actually have quite a few sad moments which I wasn't prepared for but thankfully they get a happy ending. I enjoyed the development Buster's character went through throughout the book as it ended up being a fair amount despite the fact this story takes place over the course of a day.
Overall Housecat Trouble was a very fun read and I would highly recommend it. I'm looking forward to picking up the next book in the series, Housecat Trouble: Lost and Found, when it releases next year.
