Comitia is well underway, but Ichinoi is getting overheated and they have yet to sell a single thing! Urara is just about to throw in the towel when a certain someone from the publishing industry shows up at her table! Can true friendship make dreams come true? Find out in the final volume of BL Metamorphosis!
Urara and Ichinoi struggle through a long, slow day of trying to sell an original comic at their first ever comic event. Unbeknownst to them, their favorite author is there as an attendee. This book felt like one of the most relatable portrayals of the early days of a comics career I've ever seen. I'm obsessed with this series and definitely want to watch the live action movie adaptation!
A beautiful, quiet, sweet but also bittersweet last volume, much like the previous ones. I agree that the ending felt a bit rushed and could have used a bit more of a conclusion, but it was a wonderful read nonetheless.
The series ends in the same quiet, low-key manner it has moved through the first four volumes. No big revelations or twists here, just a naturally unfolding friendship.
Is it out yet? I mean, I know I'm going to love it, I'm just politely waiting for the translation because I imagine that would take more time than learning Japanese/kanji (well....maybe....fuck, I've got books from college, I suppose I should just take that up as a side job -- UGH but then those damn fujoshi's on the scanlation sites will try to recruit me to their causes and NO! I WANT TO SUPPORT THIS IMPORTANT AUTHOR! I WILL WAIT LIKE A GOOD GIRL FOR THE PAID PROFESSIONALS!!! JAPANESE COMICS ALREADY GIVE YOU MORE BANG FOR YOUR BUCK ANYWAY - I'M AN ADULT!! I CAN ADMIT I WASTE ALL MY MONEY ON COMICS!!!!
WHY DID THIS MAKE ME CRY THOUGH! 🥹 I would read another dozen volumes of Urara and Ichinoi in a heartbeat, but for now I’ll just be content knowing their friendship is the beautiful thing it is.
- Well, now this series is over, and I’m devastated. This is such a sweet comfort read and I devoured it in probably less than 3 hours all-together. Who’s surprised? You should be surprised when I don’t push these books and this adorable, wholesome story onto you. Read it! Read these volumes!
- This was such a bittersweet ending. I loved seeing Urara’s growth come full circle and see that she still has so much potential for her life. She’s so sweet and I just want to know what happens after this.
- I really do not like to think about Ichinoi’s end ever, but she really kept bringing up how old she was and how she would eventually die. It sent me straight into my feels and I cried at least twice while reading this book.
- This manga series is all about the power of friendship and I just adore that. It was the perfect read and reading volume 5 as 2022 began was just the perfect decision.
This story was soooo cute. It is about a 75 yo lady and a 15 yo girl crossing life paths for a while and becoming friends over a BL manga they both read. They learn from each other and enjoy their time together despite their age gap and their different lifestyles. It was nice to see the way they started to care for each other and how they influenced one another throughout the whole story.
This is an adorable and wholesome series about two people in a completely different age range meeting and bonding together because of a BL manga. It's quite a simple story, nothing too deep. The vibe and the pacing is very lowkey. This series provided that quiet comfort and the friendship between the two started off awkward but so innocent and pure. And the way both of them unwittingly influenced each other makes their friendship so genuine.
What a beautiful little adventure. I picked up BL Metamorphosis because the idea of a little story about an elderly woman rediscovering mangas, and specifically discovering Boy Love genres, receiving recommendations from a high school girl into the genre, and the unlikely friendship that ultimately blossomed from their shared interest, was something I knew had tons of potential.
I never expected to laugh, cry, and laugh again. With volume 5, this series apparently reaches its conclusion, and although it feels so bittersweet, it felt like an appropriate, natural conclusion to a very sweet story. Please give it a read.
overall, a very sweet series! the premise of "grandma gets really into BL manga" is inherently just a really good one, i think.
it felt a bit meandering at times - relationships that weren't the core dynamic of the teenager and the grandma felt ill-defined and a bit pointless, i guess. but because of the low stakes of this i didn't really find myself as annoyed as i otherwise might have been.
Such an unrealistic prompt but so many little details were realistic. I liked how just enough details were given to leave the rest to one's imagination (like how you can't tell where the grandma's daughter lives until you get to the part her husband brings them czech pastries). The ending was just so. Well done I think. Not too clingy and not too cold. Just very enough
A disappointing conclusion to the series. Urara has undergone zero character development in all five books. There was little nteraction between the two main charactes. I should've been sad that Ichinoi moved away but I wasn't. I'm more sad that I wasn't sad.
That ending was heart wrenching! It felt so abrupt; I wish there was another volume, but my soul is refreshed after reading this series. I will definitely come back to it.
