If you win the bet, we’ll let you disappear. If you lose, you’ll be trapped on stage forever.

Charlie
I'm definitely straight, but when rock god Eli Steele offers me the opportunity of a lifetime in exchange for being his fake husband for a year, I can't say no. That's how I find myself sharing a bed - and more than a few kisses - with the lead singer of Blood Money. All I have to do is stay focused on my work and pretend to be in love with him. Easy, right?

Eli
I took a stupid fucking bet and now I have to convince Charlie to fall for me without using mind control. He's straight, but the bigger problem is that he's human and I'm not. Once he finds out I'm really a vampire, will he be able to look past my fangs and see what's in my heart?

I would have rated this higher if the beginning wasn't so clunky because I generally like the trope of fake romances becoming real. But, the set-up for this fake relationship was really forced and flimsy. However, once that is out of the way, this was a fun enough book.

Although, my standards have become very low this month. I have been doing a vampire-themed reading challenge for the month and have read a LOT of crappy vampire books. Comparatively, this was a breath of fresh air because it was actually readable.

This is about a vampire rock group who are famous. One of the vampires is sick of it all and wants to quit. Another of the vamps in the group makes a deal with him that they will all quit if only bored-vamp falls in love with a human for a year. Call me crazy, but WTF? That has to be one of the stupidest set-ups for a fake relationship I have ever read.

So, of course he gets a straight guy to fake marry him..... because of reasons. And, they do what we all expect. Which makes me think - just how low is the average straight man's sales resistance? Because, according to my research - gay romance books - they seem to be just one fake relationship away from becoming gay at any time. Is this the real reason that car salesmen ignore the woman and only speak to the guy when a couple buys a car? They know he is an easier sale? Plus there is the added benefit of maybe convincing him to become their lover too. A lot of guys seem willing to do a hella lot to say they got a good deal on their new car.

Power couple in the making!
(although I'd prefer a Doug Judy/Jake Peralta deal more)

Anyhoo, bad premise aside, I liked the two main characters a lot and wouldn't mind reading more in the series. Except, vampire month is almost over. Thank god!

Vampire Eli Steele is a rock star who wants to be done with the rockstar life. Eli's band doesn't want to give up their lifestyle, so bet Eli that if he falls in love or has a long-term relationship with someone he can leave the band, otherwise he's stuck. Charlie is a straight documentary filmmaker who wants to make a movie about Eli and his band.

Eli talks Charlie into being his fake husband for a year, so that he can win the bet Charlie doesn't know about, and Eli can make his film.

The first 50% of the book was leading up to the fake marriage and the last half was the tour. It felt like a bit too much of the lead up and not really enough of them getting to know each other.

Book was well written and I enjoyed the story.

I don't know, for a book about vampires I expected it to be a little more.......intense? It was just so normal, didn't feel paranormal at all.
And also......there's one thing that confused me in this book, he woke up from a nightmare one night saying if he was human he'd have woken covered in a cold sweat, but his skin was cool & dry coz he doesn't sweat anymore. Then we have two instances where he's described with "sweat covered chest and a sweat soaked shirt" so which is which?
I know we always need a little conflict in books, but really......THAT?! Was just about ready to quit at 70% but then I thought, "I've already come this far, might as well finish it" but I wish I hadn't. I just skimmed the end but I think it got worse, I feel like I was reading something from wattpad. No offence, I know there must be some good stories on wattpad, just not in my experience.

A sweet vampire rock star romance. this was a light read and an adorable vampire :)
I enjoyed this story, but not too much. I didn't hate it either. Because Eli and Charlie were likeable characters. Also Drew, Eli's friend in the band.
I think if you like a sweet vampire story without angsts, this could be your to go read.

I don’t really like rockstar romances and not a big fan of vamps but for some reason I liked this one? The Insta love was way to quick, the bi-awakening pretty unbelievable and yet I still enjoyed myself while reading 🤷🏻‍♀️

Shot in the Dark was my first book by Riley Long alone. I liked it and give it 3,5 stars. It's a sweet vampire romance. The story is about rock god Eli Steele and Charlie. Charlie is straight but can't refuse the opportunity to be Eli's fake husband for a year.

“Shot in the Dark” is a novella by Riley Long. I first read “Lost in the Florist” by Long and was enamoured with it. “Shot in the Dark” is a much shorter and abbreviated work though so I found it a little more difficult to stay connected to the characters.

Eli Steele is the lead of the band, Blood Money. He’s over the long nights, the fans… the whole lifestyle. All of that is complicated by the fact that Eli and all the band members are vampires. It’s the perfect life for a vampire, adoring public, late nights, tour busses.

Eli is desperate to change things up … so desperate that he makes a bet with his band mates. He must get the next person who walks through the door to fall in love with him and marry him.

Charlie is the person who walks through the door. Charlie is a fan of the band and a budding documentarian. He was looking for the members of Blood Money to see if he could convince them to let him film documentary footage.

When Charlie meets Eli, he finds himself attracted to a man for the first time in his life. I did appreciate that Charlie didn’t have a huge self-identity crisis over being attracted to a man. He puzzled about it at first and then just moved on. If only there were more people like that in the world! (and wouldn’t it be better for all of our mental health if we were able to react like that!)

One of the most interesting things about Eli is that he is mourning the loss of a human lover. Long reveals over the course of the novella that it is dangerous being the lovers of a vampire. The plot eludes to there being a lot of aggression between clans of vampires. For each action there is a swift and violent reaction… often involving the death of a vampire. Sadly, this idea isn’t expanded upon due to the length of the novella. I would have loved to have read more about the descension between the clans and why that even happened.

Because of the brevity of this novella, the relationship between Charlie and Eli progresses quickly. There’s nothing wrong with that, but I feel as though it would have been so much more enjoyable if this was a novel. Long has a great writing style but there’s only so much that a write can do with only a little over 100 pages.

I found that Drew – the vampire who created Eli – was potentially one of the most interesting characters in the book. I felt an immediate curiosity about him!

If you’re in the mood for a short vampire love story, then this one will hit the spot!

Eli is tired of being a rock star. His fellow bandmates and friends think he needs to fall in love again. Their subsequent bet brings Charlie onto their current tour with them. Charlie wants to make a documentary on the band, and Eli's offer seems almost perfect.

I like Charlie, but it was clear he was over his head and didn't know it. I also felt he was a bit clueless. As someone who wants to make documentaries, he seemed to overlook a lot and didn't look into things that should have been red flags. I like that once he realized he was attracted to Eli, it didn't cause him a ton of angst. I also liked that he made sure of his feelings and took a chance that Eli's feelings weren't just for show.

I have mixed feelings about Eli. I understand why he doesn't want to be close to a human again or fall in love. However, his initial indifference to what happened to Charlie afterward didn't sit well, even as it was probably typical in his world. I also couldn't understand a certain scene late in the book. I would have thought Eli would have been way more protective of Charlie in that situation. Charlie was awful forgiving about that and other things that happened afterwards. I'm not sure I could have been as forgiving.

All in all, it was a faster read than I expected and while I enjoyed it, I had issues with some parts of it as stated above. The story really focuses on Charlie and Eli, which is good, but the focus is so tight that the reasons they are together get lost. The documentary that was so important to Charlie barely gets mentioned once the band is on tour for instance.

While Eli and his band seem to follow the rules, their vampire world is definitely full of dark dangers. The world-building here is minimal and mostly not needed as the vampires here seem to fit the more traditional version. If you want a quickly moving sweet vampire story with fake husbands and maybe a touch of angst, this one might be for you.

Okay, this story follows our 'not so straight' Charlie and the Eli when Eli loses a bet over the conversation 'I'm a rockstar Vampire but I just want a break'. It's a short novella and has rockstar romance with fake dating trope and some paranormal elements to it.
.
That cover makes this book look like neon goodness, and I'm all for that vibe. Second it has rockstar vampires who are super old and want to lead a very human life. Yeap. Count me in. I really liked the concept of the story. A bet, a clueless human, and a perfect opportunity.
.
Charlie was such a cinnamon roll with his trusting heart and his shy sassy character. Eli was the supposed tough guy, but even he is a teddy bear of a Vampire. I knew this was a novella going into it, but I still wanted more time building a relationship between Eli and Charlie. It felt too fast and convenient to believe it to be honest. I was confused as to how old Eli was and at the end of the book, I just didn't care about that, but more about Charlie sitting on the house porch. Overall, it was a cute and short rockstar romance between two drastically different characters, and a sweet story. Don't think while reading this book and just enjoy the story.

It all started with a bet. Eli’s friend and band mate makes a bet with him involving falling in love with a young man who is seen walking into the bar they are in.

Charlie is straight but can’t help the raw magnetism that pulls him toward the famous singer who has approached him. Charlie expresses his want to make a documentary about their band, but Eli refuses knowing that he and his band mates have secrets that the world cannot know about... but he makes Charlie an offer. If Charlie agrees to marry Eli and make it convincing to his band mates, Charlie can go on tour with them and secretly film his documentary.

Neither of them anticipate actually falling for the other. How will this work if Charlie doesn’t know he is jumping on a tour bus with a bunch of vampires?

This was adorable. I was gifted the audio book through Gay Romance Reviews. This was a fast listen and I blew through it. Andrew Morrison is a very talented narrator who breathes life into these two men.

While this story was a little convenient and not surprising, it was so much fun. Who knew that soft vampires would be such entertaining reading material?

***I received an advanced reader's copy in exchange for an honest review.

There were parts of this book that I absolutely loved. I loved the sweet innocence of Charlie, as he struggled and came to terms with his sexuality (or at least his sexuality when it comes to Eli). I loved the vampires and the world the author created, and the back-and-forth, true friendship she was able to portray both between Eli and his clan as well as Charlie and his friend. And, let's be honest here... fun, sexy rock-star vampires are nothing to whine about. :)

That being said, I think this book fell into the same trap many books of this length do: it was just... too short? As such, there were parts of it that felt rushed and skimmed over, especially in the last third of the book. I wish the vampire reveal was maybe a tad more dramatic. I wish Eli and his clan's backstories were more flushed out, I wish the vampire world was more developed, and I wished we got more time with them on tour before the book was suddenly over. I found myself trying to click past the last page, waiting to see what happened next, even though, technically speaking, I know it wasn't a cliffhanger ending.

Overall, it wasn't a bad read though, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a fun, low-angst vampire rock-star and his sort of conditionally gay husband.

I really liked Charlie, he was a lovely character. I enjoyed that there wasn't all that much angst with the way he jumped into a relationship with Eli. I liked Eli, but there were some times where I wished he acted differently with Charlie. I get that he'd lost a human lover before, but it was a bit tiring to hear about Tom over and over again. Still, they did have a lot of chemistry and were hot together, which is always a plus.

The story felt a bit rushed, especially near the end, and I wished that the vampire-reveal portion of the story had been a bit more fleshed out. The audiobook was fast-paced and due to its length, a bit insta, but it was still entertaining.

Andrew Morrison truly took me by surprise by how good his performance was. His voice was really pleasant and he really brought all the characters to life for me. This is definitely an audiobook I have no trouble recommending.

Eli, a vampire, is tired of his life as a rock star and wants to disappear from this life but his bandmates don't agree. So they bet that Eli can't make a mortal of their choosing fall in love with him within a year without using his powers. If he does, then they'll disappear and start a new life all over elsewhere. Their chosen mortal is Charlie who writes documentaries. So Eli makes a deal with Charlie, pretend to be my husband for a year and I'll let you follow us around for your documentary. Thus ensues their relationship that turns real quickly as they develop feelings for one another. But they still have one very big obstacle, Charlie has no idea Eli is a vampire! It's a quick and short read with interesting characters and a great HEA. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.

MM romance? Check
Paranormal romance? Check
Vampire romance? Heck yeah!

This one was a short, sweet, steamy romance between a gorgeous, rock star vampire and a human (who, up until meeting the vampire, is straight).

What happens when a bored vampire wants to shake things up? Well, he enters a bet, of course! What happens from the moment human Charlie walks through the doors is a fun read. Sexy as heck! I do wish some of the eluded to conflicts would have been expanded upon, but never-the-less, the story between Eli and Charlie was still a fab read. I enjoyed the passion and heat, I even appreciated the fact that there wasn't a big deal made about the straight human finding himself attracted to a man for the first time in his life.

I would recommend this one to any person who is a fan of MM and paranormal romance stories. It's a short, enjoyable read.

Eli is a vampire and the lead singer of Blood Money. He took on a bet and has to make a straight guy fall in love with him. But the more he tries to convince Charlie to fall for him without using mind control of course, he invaribly does the opposite and falls for the target himself.
If only he could convince the sweet human that his feelings for him are real and to look beyond him being the creature of the night.

This was a sweet vampires, Rockstar romance. Eli and Charlie were likeable characters and totally rooting for them from the start.
I loved the author's writing style and the world building they created.

Overall a fun, enjoyable low angst read. I just wish it was a tad longer.
I couldn't get enough of Eli and Charlie they were all too adorable.

Rockstar Vampire with a fake 'stragith' husband? Best thing ever.

I enjoyed reading this book so much. It was sweet and light while romantic and hot too. Loved Charlie and Eli. The best thing was that Charlie was a so sweet fanboy, I loved their first encounter, it was adorable.

Liked the whole vampire thing and that everyone in the band was vampire. I love rockstar romances and it was good to see the band on the tour, on the bus. And it was both sweet and hilarious that Eli forgot to buy food for Charlie. You think that Eli is the badass rockstar, but when it comes to Charlie he is such a marshmallow. I loved their relationship, it was both instalove and slow burn at the same time (don't ask how, it just was).

Charlie was so adorable on his way to gayness and the romance between him and Eli was so good.

I really enjoyed reading this book. My only probleme is that drama at the end - it was so lame. But anyway, the ending was really good and I hope to read more in this world.

A fun, adorable and steamy read. I loved Eli and Charlie instantly, the development between them is so sweet considering its a short read.

The fake marriage and the little moments together, all of the love under the moonlight and the trip to the beach. Playing poker and their chemistry together is just perfect, i just really enjoyed this read.

Reminded me of my love for vampires too, i like how portrayed here and that not all innocent. Learning a little about the bands past and the explanations Eli came up with to hide it at start were great.

Overall this was a sweet quick light hearted read with an entertaining cast, i loved Eli and Charlie. The ending is so fitting!

Looking forward to Drew's book now as he was amazing, excited to see his story soon 💕

Charlie thinks he has hit pay dirt when he meets Eli and Eli agrees to allow him to come on tour with the band to film a documentary, he doesn’t know that he is just a pawn in a silly vampire bet. Eli is tired of being alone, tired of touring, and tired of his life in general. Of course, there is insta-love and a little gay-for-you thrown in for good measure. The story is okay, but not what I think of when I pick up a vampire book. There are some continuity errors in the book that jump out at you (how old is Eli, can he sweat or not?).

I just want to say that if someone was able to prove to me that they were a vampire I would not handle it as calmly as Charlie did.

What I liked - 2 charming mc's (seriously loved Eli), the supporting cast, the vampire world (though a little more background might have been nice).
What didn't quite work for me - it needed a little more conflict about the vampire revelation as Charlie accepted things a little too quickly, the bet, some more world building and just a little bit of an epilogue (unless of course it becomes a series). That would have made it that bit better for me.
Overall I liked the story and the MC's made up for little niggles

A vampire rock band, a bet on love and a fake husband all baked into one.

Charlie finds himself on tour with rock band Blood Money as the fake husband to lead singer Eli for an once in a lifetime opportunity of a documentary of the band.
And for someone who's straight, hu sure finds Eli quite attractive.

Eli takes the bet of finding someone to fall in love with him within a year. The only problem is that Charlie is straight and his fake husband, Eli is a vampire and he can't ever let anyone close again .

Enjoyed the book and Charlie and Eli.

This was a short vampire novella. Eli is the lead in a band called Blood Money and a vampire. One night he makes a bet with his bandmates that the next person who walks thru door, he can get them to fall in love with him and get married. Charlie is a fan of band and is the next thru the door. He wants to film the band in a documentary. I loved the sweet romance of the story, things progress quick, insta love. This was a good story, liked it. Sweet, romantic book. Eli is a vampire and the lead singer of Blood Money. He's tired of his lifestyle and made a bet with his friend that he can make a human fall in love with him without using his powers. Charlie is straight, and sweet and only want to document the band. Eli is afraid of falling in love again, but starts developing feeling for Charlie. Their romance is sweet, funny, romantic, and I love the banter between the friends. It's a slow-burn and had my attention from start to finish.

Good vampire story.

I love vampires but find it hard to find a good one to read. This one was good. Rock star vamp meet writer human. What dreams are made of. The relationship from beginning to end flowed pretty good. Had a little trouble how Charlie wasn't more hesitant about being the bottom so easily bit hey someone got to.do it. I would recommend this book for vampire readers.

I really enjoyed this novella by Riley Long. Who knew vampires made bets? This one involves making a human fall in love with him without using any of his vampire powers. Both characters enter the arrangement for purely selfish reasons and then discover in true romance fashion that what they have is real. I enjoyed the suspensful build up to the confession of vampirism and bought the resolution. Would like to see more are this world and the characters in it.

2.5 Stars. I don't know maybe this book just had too many things in it for me: fake relationship, vampires, rock star and it just didn't mesh very well for me. I never really felt the connection between the two MC's and the vampire bits were so minor it might as well have been written as a contemporary. So sorry not a book I would recommend but I'm rounding up because it did have some sweet moments along the way.
