In her amazing diary, Anne Frank revealed the challenges and dreams common for any young girl. But Hitler brought her childhood to an end and forced her and her family into hiding. Who Was Anne Frank? looks closely at Anne's life before the secret annex, what life was like in hiding, and the legacy of her diary. Black-and-white illustrations including maps and diagrams provide historical and visual reference in an easy-to-read biography written in a way that is appropriate and accessible for younger readers.
Anne Frank was an ordinary girl with ordinary hopes and dreams for her future. But growing up in Hitler's Germany didn't allow for a bright future as Anne was Jewish. This biography looks at her life before German occupation, the changes brought about by Hitler's strict persecution of Jews, the need to hide and the challenges faced by those in hiding, and her eventual capture and deportation to a concentration camp. The content was thoughtful and empathetic, focused on her life, not her death, while also providing information on other related topics from that time period.
Um livro que deveria de estar em todas as casas: explica de forma muito simples, o que foi a 2ª Guerra, o Holocausto, os refugiados, o extermínio dos judeus... Adorei!
Let me start by saying that this is a children's book. I read it to see if it would be good for my son to read before we went to the Anne Frank house in Amsterdam. It was truly wonderful! For anyone not old enough to read Anne's full diary yet, this is a really good and thorough book about Anne Frank and the time period she lived in. It covered a lot of information about the war, the time, the setting, as well as Anne and her life. I thought it was so good that I had my husband and older kids read it, too, even though we had read Anne's real diary a long time ago. It is a perfect little book about its subject. The woman at the book store told me that this series has books on many famous people and now my son is interested in reading more books in the series - next up, the one on the Beatles! The fact that the book was engaging to my young son, as well as my teenage kids and even me and my husband in our 40's says a lot about it, in my opinion. I would recommedn this book for young children who are starting to read chapter books, and for anyone who might be going to visit the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam - no matter what age you are. Well written and informative.
Another book read with my daughter. An interesting biography on Anne Frank. It's amazing how the Franks spent more than 650 days hiding in the annex with little comforts. (And people complain about the lockdown). It's important to remember what happened during those terrible war years. How terrible decisions can lead to even more terrible outcomes.
With our current political climate, it was rather hard to read this since I couldn’t help but compare the situation Anne Frank, her family, and Jews found themselves in during Hitler’s reign (and all the victims of World War II, particularly the Japanese Americans being sent to internment camps) as what could happen if we don’t stand up to hate and abuse of power. This provided a broad look at the times and the legacy of Anne Frank’s diary.
My eight-year-old daughter and I read this in two evenings. She was fascinated with the nonfiction aspects of the book that were written in ways that she could understand and build connections to her present day adventures. I’m thankful for the opportunity to read it and the discussion between the two of us. Reading memories that I won’t forget.
Featured in grandma reads chapter book sessions. (Thanks to the author for providing us an opportunity to read this story together.)
This was a tough one. . .we read through her life, like any old storybook. My crew was interested, in her, in her life in another country, in her interests and dreams. We took it very slow, so got to know her over our weeks of reading. And today she . . . her life was squelched by a small minded bug that was tolerated in his bugginess until he overwhelmed the world for a few moments. Certainly he overwhelmed Anne and her family. And Six Million Others.
It was a sweet life with potential, but the hard end came fast today. I couldn't do it. My oldest participant had to read it for me - our book ended with her own words: "In spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart."
We had a quiet moment between books before moving on to our next read.
I think that this book is awesome because it's about a girl who had hopes and dreams and then she got a diary then she wrote and wrote then she got caught but she still had hope!
This book goes through Anne Frank's life from birth until she died. Anne Frank was a girl who hid in an attic with her family and close friends during World War II. Anne was just a young girl when she and her family had to go into hiding from Hitler's reign. Jewish families, just like Anne's, were forced to go into hiding in order to ensure no one hurt or taken away from families. She kept a diary and wrote in her diary everyday. When Anne died and the war was over, her father found out he was the only living member for his family able to survive. He made sure to publish Anne's diary as a book.
I would use this book to introduce biographies in my classroom. This book or one in the series would be a great book to have students read as they started to learn about biographies. Students could each have a different "Who was" book and do a book report on the person they chose. Another way I could use this book is as a read aloud. I think this would be a great read aloud book to use if you are teaching a lesson about how people adapt to their communities to meet their needs. Anne's family had to move and find people they could trust to help them get food and items to use while surviving in the attic.
This book is a WOW book for me because I have always been curious about Anne Frank and wanted to know more about her life during World War II. A big piece of my own history lies in Germany during World War II so I have a big passion for books that take place in regions during the time Hitler was in power. A dream of mine is to go to the Anne Frank house and any chance I get I love reading about different perspectives during the time of Nazi control over regions of Europe. The book is easy to follow along because Anne's life is laid out in chronological order. The chapters also have illustrations scattered throughout and this broke up the text to simplify the book for younger grades. The book was enjoyable because of all the information it had on Anne's life and the detail the book went into when they were in hiding. Anne's story is so captivating and intriguing and it makes the book super easy to read!!
Who Was Anne Frank? written by Ann Abramson is a biography of Ann Frank. This nonfiction book is one that I would use on a fourth grade reading level. The book invites the reader to learn about challenges and dreams for many young girls, specifically during her time. I thought this was helpful because a lot of these challenges or dreams are still challenges or dreams for girls today. This book tells the readers about Anne Frank’s life from birth to death, including specific facts and illustrations. The author did a fantastic job at being specific in details! It highlights some of the suffering her family went through, as they hid from evil.
This is a WOW book because it calls the reader to understand and learn from history, not ignore it. I would use this book to bring about a discussion about injustice, in our classroom and all around the world. I would also use this book to have students understand history, specifically creating a timeline of Anne Frank as a class. Then, I would have them create their own autobiography or timeline!
I started this remarkable book with my daughter over the weekend. I imagine it could be read with parents by children as young as five, and depending on the reading level, enjoyed by girls up to 12 on their own.
My daughter DID not want to read the book, as she didn't know the story behind it. However, as we read it together, the book thoroughly held her attention and her imagination. She loved that Anne also liked to play pranks - and missed many days of school like her, due to illness. She found a lot of similarities between herself and Anne Frank. She enjoyed the maps and information in the book - and was filled with questions about WWI and WWII.
I hope to post more about this later, but I will definitely be looking for more books by this author. My daughter said, "I love this book!" many times while reading it - which was a first for her. I have finally found a HERstory (aside from Goddess books, which she also loves) that she can fully identify with and enjoy.
103 pages. Another great biography in the series. I learned a lot about her and history of that time frame. There were extra pages with information on Hitler, WWI, White Rose, Resistance, Star of David, and a few more interesting topics related to the Frank family and friends. Plus there are lots of simple maps to help one understand the area being discussed. It was well-written and very thorough. I am glad I read it and hope to read her diary someday. I have not been able to do so, knowing it will probably break my heart. Any classroom studying WWII could benefit from reading this great resource or during a biography genre lesson. Highly recommended for Grades 4-5.
This is an extremely touching story of a young Jewish girl, Anne Frank. She was forced to be burdened with unknown difficulties at young age only because she was a Jew. I loved her story through and through as her story was a meaningful one, even though she was only a young girl with a short life.. How could one stand watching their dreams vanishing into thin air?! Anne was patient. She hoped and hoped that next morning will bring everything her heart desires but destiny did otherwise. Even after everything happened to her she believed that people are really good. "In spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart."
This book was such a great read. My kids are 8, 6 and 3 and they loved it. They want to read Anne’s actual diary now and we were able to have a lot of meaningful discussion about the hard things.
I asked them why we need to learn about these kinds of stories and my oldest said, “so these things don’t happen again?” She gets it. They loved reading about Anne and her hatred of Math and how she was chatty and got in trouble. They loved that her diary was called “kitty” and that she wrote in it daily. This is a great way to introduce a horrible subject to young kids. We will read more of these for sure.
Meet Anne Frank. Who was she? Why is she so iconic in History? What do the Nazis and Adolf Hitler have to do with Anne Frank? Read and find out. I really enjoy the Who Was Biography series.
One of my favorite factoids about Anne was her love of celebrities and how the pictures in the Secret Annex are still there today.
It was filled with some factoids about Anne that I hadn't read about before, which always makes the Who was Biographies intriguing.
Got this one for a tutoring job I took on since they are going to Germany. It’s filled with great information and clearly organized. It is an emotional read. This novel I’m ties in all major events in Anne Frank’s life without going too in-depth. It also ties in historical events and figures that connect to her life.
I bought this book for my niece in hopes it would interest her in reading Anne Frank's diary. Though I think this book would also be helpful for showing an adult how to discuss the Holocaust with a child at a level they can understand. I'm glad I sat down to read it before giving it to her.
This book is very detailed. I was sucked into the portal of reading. I would definitely recommend this book to all of my friends. It’s a great book and I felt like I went back in time and watched Anne’s life go on for years.
Emma and I read this together after she read about Anne Frank at school. This book made such a difficult topic a little bit easier to discuss with a first grader. Emma has started writing in a “diary” and we still talk about Anne. I look forward to when she can read Anne’s actual diary.
I liked the book but it was a little sad. She lived a hard life. But overall it was a great book. I would recommend this book to kids because it was only 9 chapters. But it would be a great book to read for everyone!
