It’s the sort of thing that bugs you after someone dies. You remember little ways you wronged them. Even if they deserved it.
“I can’t believe she hurt you that bad and you never said anything.”
Does someone who does one bad thing, even one really bad thing, deserve bad things to happen to them? Deserve to be murdered or framed for murder?
Kay Donovan attends the prestigious Bates Academy all-girls boarding high school for two reasons: One, to try to get a college scholarship by playing well on their soccer team, and two, to get a fresh start from a tragic past. As of Halloween of her senior year, she’s doing well on both counts. But then a classmate is found dead in the lake on school property, triggering traumatic memories. Shortly after that, Kay receives an email from the dead girl, threatening to reveal unsavory secrets about Kay. It comes with a link to a website created just for Kay -- targeting her closest friends’ deepest darkest secrets, as well. Kay sees no choice but to play along …This is an unusual, inspired, complex, chilling, and ultimately heartbreaking book that I could not put down. I started it the evening before Thanksgiving, read it every chance I got over Thanksgiving day, and finished it the next morning because I just had to know what was going to happen next, and find out the answers to the mysteries: What happened to the dead girl (was it suicide or murder)? Why is Kay the target for that website? What happened in Kay’s past that’s driving her so hard in the present?
