It's September, 2017. Hurricane Irma is sweeping across the State of Florida, but for disgruntled weatherman Bud Bradbury, the heavy storm sets the mood for a sudden surge of powerful emotion. After being mailed a mysterious, morbid VHS tape containing old lost footage of something deeply disturbing, he decides that it's time to take back control of his own life... but his attempt to get noticed might just be the most dangerous mistake of his entire career.
A story about a weather forecaster. One of the few stories in the collection A Blurred Estuary of Demons: Early Short Stories that doesn't have that sense of foreboding. This is a story about life, what do we need from life? do we need the job of our dreams? do we need success in our jobs? do we need to retire after a long and successful career? do we even know what the hell it is we need? that last question some's up the story's protagonist here. At the beginning of the story he is thinking of retiring. then when he is asked to retire shortly after he is mad about it. then we learn that this was his dream job, he went to college to work in this job, so why the fuck are you complaining. he felt sick and tired of the entire thing, he didn't feel appreciated enough, he was so fed up to the point of explosion, he almost gets himself killed. While broadcasting his anger and frustration to the world and his impending doom, he does exactly what the channel wanted all along, they are now trending globally, no way they will ask him to retire after this. i liked the selfless act of his college, she was described the entire story as someone who just didn't care and was so caught up on her own life, but when push comes to shove, she goes into the water to save her college, and she promises him that if they fire him then they will lose her as well. a good ending, a stumbling uninteresting start, a discrepancy in human behavior that is hard to understand, even though i might have succeeded in explaining his entire psyche now, but yeah from outside seeing the big picture, this guy was living his dream, he just couldn't see it because he was too close..
While a disillusioned weatherman's career may be coming to an end, Hurricane Irma sweeps across Florida, in another short story from the always entertaining Rebecca McNutt. Her characters are as well developed as ever & there are some good surprises along the way.
