This is tough for me to rate. I was expecting this to be funny. A girl bent on dying in a horribly embarassing way to get back at her dad. I was expecting some fluffy romantic comedy with ninjas. Boy, I was mistaken. While I enjoyed this, it reminds me of a cross of Immortal Rain, the Both Sides of Time series, and Wild Ones. Deception, desperation, love, misunderstanding, ill conceived plans, utter desperation! I think I would have enjoyed this more as a romantic comedy. I've read through volume 9, so you could definately say that I like it, but I guess how it ends will greatly affect it's re-readability. Well, that's true of any series.
Usually I can get through most comics, at least a good deal of the way in, but I quit around chapter 6 of this because the story was spotty and rushed. I also found Beni's early 2000 low-ride jeans + thong underwear "whale-tail" look and the gag that came with it to really date and detract from the manga.
I can't quite put my finger on it, but I just felt nothing from the manga. No interest was sparked beyond the initial blurb. Things happen and it's like, "Okay but, why? When? How?" and it's like the author just wanted to skip directly to scenes of Kagetora declaring his loyalty, Beni screaming, and then them dealing with a weird conflict like Beni being betrothed to yet another weird man. I felt like we needed a few more pages, if not chapters, to establish Beni's character and develop her relationship with Kagetora before it's just full on "he's mine and we're loyal."
I do like the art though; it's not always well done and it can look rushed, but the smaller eyes and more realistic proportions make for a nice look.
Reread 2018 - I was in a big need of a book boyfriend and decided to reread this. I remember again why I loved this series so much when I read it properly for the first time ever. Rereading it again, I marvel at how well the relationships are developed and how they impact each other. Even the most villainous character has a good reason for being antagonised. I remember again why this manga is special to me lol.
21/03/2014 - 23/04/2014 ( read, not marking it down electronically yet because it totally defeats the purpose of my challenge!!!)
While I have tried to start this manga before, I am really really glad I read it all the way through this time. The other time, I stopped because I thought it was going to be an insta-love kind of manga, which at first it seemed like it was. But then, I got through the first volume, and then the second, where they time slipped back in time, and then, well I just went with the flow and found myself at the end, reading not only a romance manga, but a manga that has tragedy and action as well. I felt for the second half of the series it was more focussed on Kagetora and Hitaki's relationship than Kagetora and Beni's relationship, which brings me to:
The GOOD bits.
Firstly, Beni and Kagetora establish their relationship pretty early on in the series, so it's very deceiving. But it makes way for the rest of the series to focus on the broader plot (and also allow further development of Beni and Kagetora's relationship, which was very, very good. I love it when there's development).
Secondly, I liked the progression of the story, since it's about slipping through time, it would be hard not plan it really well. Conami certainly planned it well. I loved how things that you saww at the start, were revisited towards the end.
Thirdly, Beni's a relatively strong character who develops over time. I liked her.
Fourthly, gosh, all the hot guys?? Yep. Box checked.
Fifthly, oh yeah, the title of the manga makes perfect sense when the action gets going.
Sixthly, there's humour, the initial chapters are quite humourous, particularly with the intereactions between Beni and Kagetora!
And now, the kind of BAD parts It's unbelievable that I was deceived like that!!! I can't believe I stopped reading it the first time because I thought it would only be focussed on romance, so I stopped. But really, really, it was much better than I thought it was!!!
I found that there were some things in the story that were never truly explained, or seen all the way through, though if you think about the logic, then it's what happens with the ending (such as with what happens with Beni's mother). The ending of the series too, I was a little disappointed, even if I liked how it ended, I wish it wasn't that brief! (i'm referring to the end of ch 63 rather than 64) Oh! And I hate how brief the problems regarding Beni and father were so quickly dealt with. I wished that it had been delved into more, especially when they came face-to-face at last, rather than hearing most of their stories separately.
And...what else? I think that's pretty much all the negatives.
Overall This is a pretty good manga with romance and action, happiness and sadness, a time-travel plot that could sometimes mess with your mind. But it was good. It's quite bloody in some bits, but it's all good, anad definitely matches the ninja theme. If you want something with romance, something with action and twisted plots, then I think this would be good for a read.
This the story of a ninja who while protecting a princess falls into a lake and is sent back in time to the present. There he mistakes the princess with a look alike (also name Beni), who later turns out to be her...This is one of many manga series I started reading, mainly because I love the cover. I don't know, its cool and cute at the same time. Surprised it hasn't been turned into an anime...yet.
--- Shinobi Life 1-? --- Plot: Drama roman, drama time travel ^^ //eh. Penokohan: Ok. Gambar: Ok. Sepertinya perijinan atau penjualan komik ini belum begitu bagus untuk dapat dilanjutkan oleh m&c! ... :((
This was an enjoyable, action packed, and romantic read. Quite fast paced. Time travel and ninjas and heiresses/princesses. Would recommend, as it was funny and exciting. 4 stars.
Beni is a girl who has been kidnapped many times and is at a point in life when she doesn't care if she lives or dies. Just as she is being kidnapped, a ninja falls from the sky. Kagetora is from the past and is sworn to protect Beni-hime. After a fall into a lake, he is transported to the present and meets Beni. Beni looks the same as his Beni-hime and he protects her as his princess.
This is a cute read. Beni and Kagetora are both very clueless, yet competent (if that makes any sense). Beni doesn't need a protector all the time, and Kagetora is pretty new to the 21st century. They have great interaction.
The art is nice, but the story doesn't really have a real plot. So it is a little hard to figure out what's going to happen.
Let me begin this review by saying I've never heard of this title prior to it showing up in my GoodReads recommendations, probably based on the fact I've been reading Naruto and Tail of the Moon interchangeably. I'm surprised I never heard of it before, especially since I was a huge Tokyopop consumer back when I was a teenager and wasn't really aware of any of the shady shit the publisher did. (They were affordable for what little allowance I rarely got, and I liked a lot of their titles that they put out, and that was enough for teen me.) The summary on this one didn't give me a ton to go off of, or rather, what it did give me made the entire thing sound cheesy and like it was going to be a ridiculous read I could laugh at.
Turns out, I actually enjoyed this a lot more than I was anticipating, and I'm very satisfied with having purchased it! From what I've seen, there are at least six volumes in this series, so it wouldn't be difficult to hunt them all down despite them being out-of-print, but I don't think I'm going to unless someone comes along and tells me I need to read the rest. The reason for this is, I think this first volume functions very, very well as a stand-alone. We're presented with a primary conflict and it is, from what I've read, more or less wrapped up by the end of the last chapter of this volume. There are arguably only very few dangling plot threads, and none of them are so glaring that I'm upset and need to see them tied up in later volumes. The plot itself feels nicely resolved in this first volume, and that was an unexpected, pleasant surprise. I'm going to be keeping this one for a long time to come, but again, I'm not sure I'm going to get the rest of the series, because I don't feel like I really need to in order to enjoy what of the story I got from this one.
HIGHLY recommend it to shoujo romance fans, because I feel like it's a little more heart-melting than I bargained for, and I love that.
Kagetora is a ninja assigned to keeping princess Beni safe. However, when they are attacked Kagetora is pushed from a cliff, falling into a lake. But something strange happens and he ends up in modern day Japan.
Beni is a direct descendant of princess Beni, baring an uncanny resemblance. Kidnapped and forced to the top of a tall building, she is locked in a verbal battle with her captor (actually trying to convince him to kill her) when Kagetora falls from the sky in a hail of rain.
Mistaking modern day Beni for his princess of the past, he springs into action, saving her though she didn't want him to. Confused and unaware that he is in the future, Kagetora follows Beni faithfully, trying to protect her as she wonders how long it will take him to find out he is in the future, but unwilling to burst his bubble for fear he will leave her to her lonely existence.
In Conclusion
So far it's quite cute though I disagree with Beni's decision to not tell Kagetora where he is. Definitely going to read the next volume!
It might be a bit cheesy at times, but you can't help but love this introduction. It's a great start up that showcases character growth and development. I loved how the main character went from wishing for death (to prove that her father was guilty of her mother's death) to actually caring about her survival because she felt like she finally had something worth fighting for. On the other hand, I love the love interests growth as he finally accepts that the "hime" he fell in love with in the modern era was not the hime he loved in the past. Just perfect drama for those who love damsel-in-distress plots like me. Oh, and don't forget the poison trope just at the smack dab end.
Binge read the whole series in half a day and I loved it so, so much! I always love stories that have time travel just because they're that much more complicated so they take that much more effort and planning from the author(s).
The samurai feel made me think of Itsuwaribito, which I also enjoyed!
I loved the romance between Kagetora and Beni! At first I thought it was too much of instant romance, but later as I kept realizing more and more about their story and being connected over a large span of time--everything made sense and they are seriously a beautiful couple, fated to be together!
Kagetora, A ninja from the past time travels to present Tokyo where a girl is about the die at the hand of kidnapper. He saves her because she is the same as the Princess Beni he was supposed to protect. Present Beni starts using him as her bodyguard and starts falling in love with him as he dedicates his life to Beni.
However, Beni is pathetic for using her death to revolt against her father. DUH! Teenagers!!!
A Shinobi (ninja), while trying to save a princess who's his mistress, from an ancient time, slips through a hole via a pond and finds himself in our present world. When he woke up, he found a girl who looks exactly the same as the princess from the past and she even has the same name as her, thus decides that he still has to protect her... Secrets and mystery roam around this princess' look-a-like's past and the hole that connects to the past..
I know this series was a bit beloved when it was published by Tokyopop, and I did find it interesting and comical. It may prove to be a really good ninja romance. I just don’t know if I want to invest the time to read all 12 volumes right away. I think I’ll take my time with this series.
I feel like the pacing is faster than I would like but I am so interested in the story. I like that there is a time vortex and different things happening in each time period. I’m also liking the main characters. I enjoy their chemistry. And I absolutely love the humor in this. Kagetora pulling on Beni’s “loin cloth”.... LOL
Maybe the full version would be clearer, but as I understand it, this is a story of a ninja who came from the past to protect the descendant of someone he was hired to protect many generations earlier -- yet he doesn't understand they're two different people.
Was not so my stile shinobi life 1, i dont like so much the drawings, but the app MangaZone is great! I think will like more the manga stile of Taniguchi, more the art of graphic novels:
A ninja lips time & lands in modern times. Yep, & the first time he's protecting a girl when she is at school, I laughed out loud but the story seems a bit soap-opera-over-the-top at tmes.
I didn't find anything appealing about this manga. It was all over the place in a hurry and I found myself, in one volume, dreading how long this series was. I won't be continuing.
