Murder, evil and injustice…

Most of the large law firms held Christmas parties but Anderson’s were renown for the attendance of judges, eminent silks, the brightest stars from the Bar’s junior ranks and the odd politician. No expense was spared – the champagne was champagne, the caviar, Russian beluga – not a sausage roll was to be seen.

The opulence of Anderson & Co was not restricted to the second floor. When the lift doors opened at the lower level, Mark was surprised at the facilities… the kidney-shaped swimming pool with the jacuzzi at one end, bubbling and steaming as if on the verge of eruption. Subtle lighting and strategic shrubbery made it hard to believe he was actually in the basement of a city law firm.

Ahead were various exercise machines. Entering the gym area, quietly impressed at the lengths the firm had gone to keep their staff fit, he gagged, almost vomiting at the scene.

In the centre of the room, lying face down on a bench was the well-built body of a young man, perhaps around his own age. He was naked. Legs were splayed obscenely apart and one had slipped to the floor. His head was twisted around so that his face – eyes open in a deathly stare – was directed at Mark. Clearly, there had been a struggle.

Pink tape, the type used by solicitors to tie up their briefs to barristers, was twisted several times around his neck, the ends draped untidily over the bench…

Sleeping with Angels is compelling, challenging …

Darryl was born, educated and spent the first chapter of his working life in Queensland, Australia. He was raised and educated on the Gold Coast but his education was cut short – by him, due to the sheer boredom of it – and at the age of 15 he left to work on a milk run. He went on to work as a window cleaner, cocktail barman, wine waiter, clerk, car salesman and a guitarist/backing singer in a rather hopeless rock band. Eventually, he got his act together, studied Law and at 28 owned his own law firm in Queensland’s far north. After nine years in the tropics he became bored with constant blue skies, gently swaying coconut palms and scuba-diving on the Great Barrier Reef, so he sold up and moved with his family to London. He practised there for twenty years specialising in commercial litigation, mostly at partner level in the City. In 2004 he returned to Queensland and now lives with his daughter in the Gold Coast hinterland.

As an author, Darryl has written in his spare time for as long as he can remember. Prior to his focussing on novels, he had a respectable number of paid articles published in British and international magazines. In 2009 he self-published his novel "The Election," a political thriller. In 2012 he won a competition with one of his other manuscripts "Calvus," and this led to a publishing contract with Morris Publishing Australia. With the demise of that publisher he has re-published that title himself.

Following another successful competition win, Darryl signed contracts with Custom Book Publications for the publication of three of his novels. "Agnus Dei," a legal thriller was published in February 2014, "Sleeping With Angels", another legal thriller followed in November 2014 and "A Dragon In The Snow" in October 2015. "Bounty" was published on 10 July 2019. In a departure from writing novels, Darryl published his memoir "...Passing Through..." in 2020. In June 2023, Darryl published "Zeno" a sequel to his novel, "Calvus" published in 2011.

All of Darryl's books are available on Amazon in paperback and Kindle eBook.

Darryl continues to write. Apart from writing, Darryl enjoys walking, travel, cinema and, of course, reading thrillers. He also continues his love of music and can be found on the music platform audius.co

Darryl's mission statement: "I aim to achieve optimal enjoyment from whatever I write and at the same time, transport my readers to another dimension, free from their daily grind."

I believe I have found another author of the crime/mystery novel genre to be a fan of.

Sleeping with Angels by David Greer is a preeminent example of how an excellent crime/mystery novel should be done. It kept me guessing all throughout the book and I just could not get enough. I really had difficulty putting the book down because I just could not resist reading more and finding clues to the mystery.

All characters are beautifully crafted to make it seem that not one of them is the suspect which leaves the readers guessing more and more. Not to be a spoiler but the end would really turn your world upside-down.

This is the beauty of this book, your preconceptions are turned on its head. If you are a fan of crime/murder mystery novels, I would highly recommend Sleeping with Angels by David Greer.

Sleeping with Angels is a legal thriller set in Queensland, Australia written by an Australian author. Whilst the cover of this book isn't particularly great and gives off an air of amateur writing, the actual writing within is excellent. If I were to draw a comparison I would say the novel reminds me of somewhere between John Grisham and Michael Ridpath.

The story opens with a waiter discovering a dead body within the premises of a prestigious law firm, a law firm which he later joins upon completing his legal training. It is here that the story becomes more interesting, parellel to our waiter come lawyer Mark's heavy workload and slow discovery of anamolies at the law firm we learn of a gay executive who regularly attends an exclusive gay club in Brisbane. The whole time the identity of this person is a mystery with small hints here and there, all the while the executive appears to be slowly becoming unhinged, presumably with work pressures so the reader enitivably looks toward the legal partners and their actions yet there's no clear picture of whom it is.

It's structured extremely well and keeps you guessing until the very end without relying on cheap writing tricks.

I think fans of John Grisham would enjoy this, whilst the courtroom action of said author is absent, it is nonetheless a good legal thriller. Fans of Australian crime should also give it a look, as should anyone interested in a good crime/mystery novel.

The novel “Sleeping with Angels” by Darryl Greer is structured very well and would keep you guessing until the very end without any reliance on cheap writing tricks. Mr. Greer is a master of carefully crafting compelling plot, conflicts, and dialogue between characters that would leave the readers always asking for more.

Excellent character development by Mr. Greer, I would always be suspicious with each dialogue between characters because these dialogues are just so compelling. I believe fans of the work of John Grisham would be particularly pleased with this book.

In my opinion, this can be considered as a prime example of an excellent legal thriller. Highly recommended for fans of Australian crime novels or pretty much anyone who enjoys reading a good crime/mystery novel in those cold winter nights.

the first crime/mystery novel I ever read was the work of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and ever since then, I have been a fan of crime/mystery novels. There is just something about them that I enjoy reading a lot during Sunday afternoons. Found another author I could be a fan of and he is David Greer.

Sleeping with Angels by David Greer reinvigorated my love for the crime/mystery genre because it is a plot that would keep anyone guessing until the end.

Each character has been meticulously developed so that the reader would not know who did it until the end and everything really makes sense in the end.

Each scene is carefully set and described so that you actually feel that you are in the crime scene.

Each dialogue is carefully written so that characters only give enough to keep you guessing and keep you hooked.

Sleeping with Angels by Darryl Greer is highly recommended for fans of the murder mystery genre. It is a legal thriller that is set in Queensland, Australia and is also written by an Australian author. The author’s writing style works great for a mystery novel. It had me guessing all-throughout the book, who did it, how did he/she do it, why did he/she do it? Such an enjoyable piece of literature, had difficulty putting down the book because I just had to know. Each evidence is carefully crafted to leave a little bit of mystery and each plot contributes to the overall story. A well-developed cast of characters that would really make you ask “who did it?” Not only an entertaining book but it could also improve a person’s deductive reasoning.

If you are looking for a good murder mystery novel, Sleeping with Angels by David Greer is highly recommended. I was so happy I bought this book in my weekly trips to the bookstore because I found another genre to be a fan of.

This was the first book I ever read which was a murder mystery and I am glad this was the first book I read in that genre. It opened up a new level of fascination to crime/mystery novels.

I never knew these books could be so entertaining to read, how each scene and dialogue is carefully written to keep the reader guessing all throughout the book and how the end would tie all loose ends.

It’s like a big “EUREKA” moment in the end and I just can’t get enough.

If you are looking for a good book that can provide good exercise for your mind, look no further than Darryl Greer’s “Sleeping with Angels.” A very compelling story the discovery of a dead body inside a prestigious law firm. The story only becomes even more intriguing when the lawyer Mark gets added to the mix. The entire time, the identity of the person who committed the murder remains a mystery with subtle clues here and there. The plot of the story is carefully crafted to give an air of mystery and would leave the reader asking for more clues to solve the murder. If you are looking for a book that can improve your detective and legal skills, look no further than Sleeping with Angels.
