Fairies have always existed in secret, without a kingdom of their own, living side-by-side with humankind. But, when one of his own children is murdered, King Oberon asks his surviving daughters -- newly minted NYPD detective Charli and wingless black sheep Lucy -- to find her killer amidst the citizenry of New York. As Charli and Lucy delve deeper into the mystery, they begin to discover the extraordinary measures their father has taken -- some clever, some desperate -- to keep an entire people hidden in an increasingly treacherous world.
For Charlie and Lucy, unmasking their sister's executioner will mean confronting their own blood-drenched legacy.
I ended up getting this graphic novel because a comic creator friend of mine (Jennie Wood) was sharing a table with the writer Eric Palicki at the 2017 C2E2 convention in Chicago.
I liked the synopsis of the story and wanted to read the whole thing.
Now that I have, I'm glad that I did. The story's lead character is a Charli, a police detective. But Charli has an interesting past. She's the daughter of the king of the fairies, Oberon. When her sister, the actual Tooth Fairy, is murdered, she begins to investigate to find out who the murderer is.
That investigation leads to her other sister, the family's black sheep Lucy. Lucy has her own secrets but when it begins to look like she might be the killer, the two sisters team up to not only find the killer but resolve their familial issues.
I have to say that the story really intrigued me. I know that combining fantasy with a crime procedural might not always work, but in this story I thought the two opposing genres came together quite well. Murder, betrayal, and a decent detective story all rolled into one!
The artwork was very well done and helped bring the story even more to life.
The best part is that while the case is inevitably solved and people receive justice, there's also an opening to do more stories set in this world. And believe me, I liked the story so much that I practically want to badger the author for more.
This is one of the better comic stories I've read so far this year.
I think this sets up a really interesting story and characters. Future installments will likely be amazing. This first volume follows Charli and Lucy, two sisters working to figure out who killed their sister, who just happened to be the Tooth Fairy.
