EVERYONE WANTS TO BE SOMEONE.

Layla Harrison wants to leave her beach-bum days for digs behind a reporter’s desk. Aster Amirpour wants to scream at the next casting director who tells her “we need ethnic but not your kind of ethnic.” Tommy Phillips dreams of buying a twelve-string guitar and using it to shred his way back into his famous absentee dad’s life.

But Madison Brooks took destiny and made it her bitch a long time ago.

She’s Hollywood’s hottest starlet, and the things she did to become the name on everyone’s lips are merely a stain on the pavement, ground beneath her Louboutin heel.

That is, until Layla, Aster, and Tommy find themselves with a VIP invite to the glamorous and gritty world of Los Angeles’s nightlife and lured into a high-stakes competition where Madison Brooks is the target. Just as their hopes begin to gleam like stars through the California smog, Madison Brooks goes missing. . . . And all of their hopes are blacked out in the haze of their lies.

This felt like one of those books I have loved since middle school; Gossip Girl, Private, and pretty much anything by Sara Shepard. It had that fun beach read sort of feel and hit that guilty pleasure part of my brain.

Unrivaled begins with a prologue that features the main mystery of our story, the disappearance of Madison Brooks. It then backtracks to a month earlier where we first meet each individual character. The story is told in third person from the perspective of each of the main characters.

Layla runs a celeb gossip blog called Beautiful Idols, but dreams of being a reporter. She hopes to make enough money from ad revenue on the blog and go to journalism school in New York.

Tommy moved from a small town in Oklahoma in hopes of becoming a musician to impress the father who doesn’t even know he exists.

Aster is a Persian girl who has always wanted to be a famous actress. She has parents with different expectations including college and marrying the Persian boy of their choosing.

All three have their reasons for wanting to compete in Ira Redman’s Unrivaled Nightlife competition. It’s a chance to promote one of Ira’s clubs on Hollywood Boulevard with plenty of cash incentives and a huge cash prize to the winner in the end. You get points based on how successful your club night is - a big point of the contest is to get huge celebrities preferably young and hot to draw in the right crowds. Leading to why Madison Brooks is a huge draw for each of the young promoters (she’s worth the most points!).

Madison is Hollywood’s it girl. Her past is full of secrets. She was determined to come to LA and make it happen. She clearly did. What I want to know is..what was she so desperate to escape? What is Madison hiding? I’m sure the series will go deeper into all of this. I found her to be the most intriguing character.

Though the book’s central mystery occurs in the prologue..it doesn’t happen in the actual story until about 65% in, which is probably why it falls on the slower side up to this point. Don’t get me wrong..I still enjoyed it. I just wish things had been more eventful in the beginning. It actually seems like the sequel has the potential to fill those expectations. Maybe this one was setting things up for what’s to come in the series.

I liked that the chapter names were all song titles (both old and new). I appreciate the diversity. Hopefully there is more character development in the sequel. If you were a fan of Gossip Girl, Pretty Little Liars, The Lying Game, The Heiresses, Emancipated, or any of those sort of books, you’d probably enjoy Unrivaled. This is one of those books that with summer coming up..I’d say get it to read on the beach.

“The general rule in Hollywood was that you were only as good as your last project.”

This was a YA contemporary story set in Hollywood.

I had a bit of a hard time keeping track of which character was which in this book, but I did get it eventually. Layla was a wannabe reporter, desperate to make it and to make her blog a hit. Aster wanted to be an actress, and to not get married the way her family wanted her to, and Tommy wanted to be a musician. Each of the characters was pretty intent on getting what they wanted though, and seemed happy to go to any length to get there.

The storyline in this was about Layla, Aster and Tommy battling it out for a job promoting a group of nightclubs by trying to see who could get the most clients through the door, especially famous ones. The pace was a bit slow at times, but the story was enjoyable.

The ending to this was a bit of a cliff-hanger!

This book just wasn't for me. For the most part, there wasn't really anything "wrong" with it but it just wasn't that great. The concept was cool but I felt like the writing style was lacking something. I can't really think of what it was lacking but it was just... plain.
I was pretty disappointed in the characters. They didn't have a lot of depth and, like the writing style, plain. To be honest, after page 13, I wasn't into this book at all. Layla was the first character we meet and she describes her boyfriend to have the perfect body and all that and she also says she "couldn't imagine what he saw in such a pale and cynical slip of a girl like herself."
I'm so sick of authors writing these perfect male characters and girls that don't see their own self worth. Why is it so hard to write female characters who are confident? I could go on go about how writers need to start creating better female characters.

Overall, I just wasn't a fan of this book. I didn't like the writing style or the characters. I was kind of bored through out the whole book and I just couldn't get into. I can see how less critical readers might enjoy this book (If I had read this when I first started reading YA, I probably would have liked it) but it just wasn't for me.

No sé qué decir. Necesito fangirlear, y mucho.

5 Words: Fame, money, family, relationships, mystery.

So, I read this in one sitting. I picked it up and that was me. Lost. Gone.

And that hasn't happened in a while.

I think this book was exactly what I needed. It's fun and flirty and full of Pretty Young Things and just a little bit trashy.

The thing I loved the most about this book was the blend of Young Hollywood and mystery. Not all of the characters were Poor Little Rich Folk, there was a refreshing blend of circumstances and a hefty dose of cynicism. The characters all stood out with unique voices, and I could always tell which was narrating at any given time, but having so many narratives did get a little confusing at times.

I liked reading the multiple perspectives, how different people saw and reacted to different things and how they then used it - mostly to their own advantage. Especially Layla. I also loved how cunning and shrewd Madison was.

One thing that I didn't like was the ending - it was so abrupt. The story just stopped. It felt like nothing was really resolved, like there had been a few pages left out at the end.

This book is perfect for fans of Sara Shepard, Cecily von Ziegesar and Rebecca Serle.

I received a copy of this for free via the publisher for review purposes.

I have such mixed feelings about this book. I liked it, but I didn't really like it at the same time. I feel like this book is getting a lot of bad ratings + reviews for one reason: it's marketed wrong and the description of the book is not really what this book is about. This book is marketed as a "thrilling suspense" when really it's a contemporary novel set in Hollywood with some scandal and blackmail thrown in, and then at the very end (the last 50 pages) it sort of becomes a thriller.

This book follows four teens: Layla (a girl who runs a celebrity gossip blog), Aster (a girl who dreams of becoming an actress and will do just about anything to become famous), Tommy (a guy from Oklahoma who moved to LA to make it big with his music), and Madison Brooks (a young pop star). I didn't give two shits about any of the characters, but I don't think I was supposed to give a shit about these characters. They were all very shallow and superficial and self-absorbed in their own ways. I like how this book takes place in the heart of Hollywood and it made me miss the Hollywood atmosphere a lot. I loved the way it would always talk about the never ending palm trees and the sunsets over the hills, and the rush of the city and the club life. (I think this is because I just moved out of California last year). One thing I really liked was how each chapter was titled after a famous, iconic song. I thought that was really cool and creative and she included some of my all time favorite songs like: Mr. Brightside, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Wake Me Up When September Ends, Royals, Shake It Off, Show Me What I'm Looking For, How To Save A Life, Hips Don't Lie, Shut Up and Dance, etc. I also liked that the writing was very fast-paced and easy to read and the chapters are all short, so it makes it easy to fly through this 400+ page book.

Now here are some of the things I disliked:
1) It's written in 3rd person, which is something I just generally don't like.
2) All the characters have similar "voices" so in the beginning it was hard to tell who was who and remember which character was which (especially Layla and Aster)
3) The whole idea behind the book is kind of lame, promoting clubs in Los Angeles and trying to get young teenage celebrities into the clubs, it's not something I would ideally want to read about but luckily this book was written well enough to hold my interest
4) I didn't like any of the characters. They were all so shallow and ridiculous and I couldn't give two shits what happened to any of them.
5) The mystery/thriller aspect of this book doesn't happen till 300 pages in and it's so out of the blue and doesn't flow with the rest of the book at all. It changes the overall mood and the pace of the book.
6) This reminded me a lot of Gossip Girl and Pretty Little Liars and I don't like either of those shows.
7) This book certainly didn't need to be 400+ pages and it doesn't need to be a trilogy. I don't like that this ended on a cliffhanger.

I feel like this book would typically be something I would hate, but I was genuinely surprised when I didn't hate it. I can't figure out what exactly it is about this book that held my interest for so long, but I kind of enjoyed the scandalous side of young Hollywood and all the black-mailing, it was super entertaining. It reminded me of a younger version of Entourage. Sure, I didn't like the characters but I had fun watching them blackmail each other and lie and cheat on each other, it was entertaining, I won't deny that. I think this captures Hollywood and celebrity life in a really accurate way- the way everything is staged and all celebrity relationships are PR and if you're involved in a shitty scandal it'll only boost your career. It's such an honest portrayal of this side of Hollywood and I liked that.

As you can see, I have very mixed opinions about this book. I didn't like it but I didn't hate it. I enjoyed myself while reading it, but this book definitely has it's flaws and it's not for everyone that's for sure.

Nada mal. El libro no está nada mal.
Bienvenidos a Gossip Girl versión Hollywood.
4 estrellas y NECESITO LEER EL SIGUIENTE.

En sonunda Dex'in temmuz ayında çıkarttığı Rakipsiz'i okuyarak bu döngüyü kırmış oldum.

A fun, easy and quick read.
To be honest, the majority of this book was relatively uneventful. The first 60% or so was mostly introducing the characters and the 'Unrivaled' Nightlife competition. Although not a lot happened, it wasn't tedious, since it read so easily. I will say it felt a little as though the book had been cut in half. It seemed to finish just as it was about to get exciting/interesting. It was a good set up for the series to come and did leave me wanting more. I'm sure I will pick up the next book in the series when it's released, even if that's simply because I feel like a fun and easy read.

I have a full review for this on my blog...

MORE? MORE! @ P.S. I love that book!

I received a copy of this book from the publishers in exchange for an honest review! Was really excited to read it as blurb sounded really promising!
Also today is the publication day of this book, so whoop whoop happy book birthday!

THE WORLD: Okay so we have California where all the glamorous things happen. I would say the world is just like ours but really it is the world of celebrities and wanna be celebrities. The people we read about in tabloids, yeah that is the world I am talking about. In other words, very expensive glamour. Tho, I wonder how much of this world is true in the book because some details...I wonder...would love to know.

CHARACTERS: The book follows three main characters and we get to read from all three perspectives. Now, what really intrigued me that even tho you would think you have these preset bad and good characters, with their development things end up not as they seem. The so called good character somehow turns to be not such a good character and the mean arrogant one ends up being a sweet victimized girl. I am talking about Layla and Aster of course. The thing is, I do not like Layla and that is probably going to be obvious in this review. Why? Because she is one of these people who say they hate something but really they are absolutely loving it and giving a chance does anything to get to the top. Jup, basically Layla always states how she hates fame and fake people who do anything to because a celebrity. But when she gets a chance...jup she does not even think about it twice. Crush all in her way. Now Aster on the other hand, she is rather mean and arrogant in the beginning but at least she does not pretend. She is good and she knows it. But later in the book we get to know her better and then really you just automatically start loving her. Frankly, what happened to Aster...horrible just plain horrible. I really care for her. And that leaves us with the third character: Tommy. Now he is the sorta neutral character in the book and so everybody likes Tommy, I cannot really imagine why wouldn't you. He is friendly and caring and well really just a friend material. Go Tommy!

Besides three main characters we also have Madison Brooks, the big celebrity that really causes all the madness. Ryan aka Madison's boyfriend and just not a good person in general. And then Ira...a club network owner and runner of the contest. Ira is a mystery...I am yet to figure him out.

LOVE: There are rather a few hints but nothing really serious. Layla and her boyfriend, Layla and Tommy, Aster and Ryan, Madison and Ryan. Hollywood for sure :D

PLUS: I actually expected less from this book. I read Evermore and Blue Moon by Alyson Noel and even so I liked them I was really impressed with Unrivalled. This book really showed different side from Alyson Noel, cannot wait for the next book in the series!

MINUS: So this is nothing to do with an author or the book itself but I really cannot stand Layla. I hope she will not redeemed. Die Layla die :D Oh and this is not a spoiler, just wishful thinking.

OVERALL: Impressed and very intrigued for the next book! Very very worth reading, this book will pull you in and I must admit, it is way better than Gossip Girl of Pretty Little Liars!

** 2.5 / 3 Stars **
OPENING LINE
Layla Harrison could not stop fidgeting.

Sigh.

I’m was actually very exciting for Unrivaled when I came across it at the Indigo Summer Preview Event. I haven’t read any of Alyson Noel’s other books but the synopsis and promise of suspense and mystery sold me. I’m still on the fence on how many stars I want to give this, it’s a tie between 2.5 stars and 3 stars. In all honesty I almost DNF this about 5 times, but I was determined to finish it. I assumed that maybe the ending would make up for the lack of a story but that was not the case for me.

After reading the prologue I couldn’t help but think “Oh great, a Sara Shepard type story”. Majority of the time I spent reading this was accompanied by a lot of eye rolling. I felt like a was reading a Gossip Girl/Pretty Little Liars spin-off with a reality TV show aspect. There was absolutely no sense of mystery, much less suspense until close towards the last half of the book. The first half and more was mainly focused on Layla, Tommy, and Aster and understanding their back story. I really just wanted to know more about Madison because her character seemed to be the only interesting one!

Unrivaled was a decent/enjoyable read but was definitely way too long. I feel like this story could actually be condensed into a duology. Knowing that this will now be a trilogy has me on the fence because I feel like book #2 will be filled with a lot of fluff and unnecessary info.

Will I continue with this series/trilogy? Probably not…

Cheesy and completely implausible but enjoyable in an airbrushed US Weekly kind of way. If you love the idea of an over-the-top reality show set in Hollywood, you might like this too.

The premise is a competition about club promotion (not quite as boring as it sounds) in which a group of eighteen year-old Hollywood wannabes is gathered together by a rich guy who owns a string of hot Hollywood clubs. In reality TV format, they battle it out to lure the most celebrities (and patrons) to their assigned club.

The four main characters are a mix of scrappy underdogs and spoiled princesses, all keeping some kind of soap opera secrets. There's a celebrity in a fauxmance, a rich girl who's like a character out of Shahs of Sunset and sneaks out of the house unbeknownst to her overprotective parents, a blogger with a motorcycle and an artist dad, and an aspiring musician. None are particularly well-developed. All are completely gorgeous, with "tanned, toned thighs," eyes that are violet and emerald, and perfect hair. Of course.

One of the characters disappears (this happens in a flash forward in the first chapter), and there is blackmail and a bunch of overdramatic internal monologue ("victory was about to be hers").

Yes, it's like a mash-up of a trashy 80s Jackie Collins book with reality TV, but go in with the right expectations and the right mood and this could be a fun, diverting book.

Fazit

I received a free advanced copy from the publishers via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

In Hollywood, nothing is ever as it seems – not even the glamorous night life. When the biggest head of the LA club world announces a competition with a prize too good to pass up, many dreams and hidden desires find an opportunity to be unveiled, if only they are good enough to win, of course. Bringing together a celebrity blogger with a dream of studying journalism, a country boy with big dreams of an ever bigger stage, and a young girl that wants more than the life her parents have set out for her, this competition is the one shot at fulfilling the one thing these three new adults truly want – their lives to finally begin. But in Hollywood, dreams always come at a price, and when their target for this competition – the hottest Hollywood star, Madison Brooks, disappears, Layla, Tommy and Aster must face the aftermath.

I was beyond excited to read Alyson Noel’s newest book, despite the mixed thoughts I’ve heard of her other works. I’ve been hesitant to read her The Immortals series exactly because of them, but I was undeterred when it came to Unrivalled. The cover lured me in straight from the get-go and when I read the synopsis, I was completely sold. When I sat down to read, I expected mystery combined with scandals and gossip worthy of being on the CW’s Gossip Girl. What I got was a great premise with very poor execution.Read more...
The writing style is juvenile at best. It very much reminds me of the things I wrote when I was about thirteen years old. The entire book feels like one great multi-chaptered fic posted on FanFiction dot Net by user GossipGirl2004. That said, I’ve definitely read better pieces of fanfiction than this. And I don’t mean for this to sound as rude as it does. I’m simply drawing comparisons so you understand this book’s vibe.

I wish the writing was this book’s only problem, but, alas, I found Unrivalled is ridden with issues and more cons than pros. Like, for instance, the plot. As I mention above, this is a very poorly executed premise that actually starts out with a lot of potential. Before you’ve read the first page, that is. it not only drags, it grovels. It wasn’t until around the second half that we finally moved on from the introduction. It took even more for the Mystery to finally kick in. And even then, it wasn’t much of a mystery since the author more or less tells us what is going to happen pretty early on. Or at least, doesn’t make it overly difficult to guess. But that might just be me. Still, I hated that there was not one ounce of information hidden, apart from The Big Mysterious Secret That is Only Vaguely Mentioned Ex Machina. A lot like a Greek tragedy in which the audience knows what the characters don’t. The only difference that I’d rather watch that instead.

The characters spend an awful long time trying to convince themselves and the readers that they are not some sort of stereotype, but, inadvertently, become the Stereotypes of Not Being Stereotypes. If that made sense. All of them are presented as these Different From The Typical LA Wannabes, but they’re really just suffering from the Special Snowflake Syndrome. The only one I remotely cared about was Aster, but I found the author’s treatment of her somewhat unjust. The rest I just couldn’t connect with and their own aspirations and goals did not manage to make me relate to them as mentions of why they were doing this competition in the first place were few and far in between. There was no real passion behind their dreams, or at least I didn’t sense it.

Overall, I sadly didn’t enjoy this book, despite trying really hard. On numerous occasions did I get the urge to DNF, but I soldiered through for the sole reason of curiosity. It was not satisfied and yet I can at least go about guilt-free now that I have read the whole thing. I would still recommend Unrivalled to people who enjoy light reads with little plot, and that aren’t easily irritated.

ORIGINALLY POSTED: https://bibliomantics.com/2018/03/18/...

The first book in Alyson Noel’s Beautiful Idols series — the only one with a good cover might I add — is basically Gossip Girl, but set in Los Angeles (which is not a dig at all). While Unrivaled still has the fun and frothy backstabbing you look for in all your teen dramas, it is sadly lacking in fun fashion because almost everyone is poor.

Really REALLY enjoyed this in a bang on, bright and bubbly way. Like Pretty little Liars meets Gossip Girl with a glossy engaging cast, a bit of mystery and a lot of life. Full review to follow.

Also big book love for Tommy. And his guitar.

What do you get when you have a town full of wannabe celebrities? Ones that are willing to do anything to get their shot at fame which could lead to bigger and better things? For a group of five, they will do anything that they can. Ira Redman is the man to have an "in" with when it comes to Hollywood and LA. He is also the owner of several clubs and has a competition to help promote his clubs, kind of similar to Donald Trump's The Apprentice show. Here we meet Layla, Tommy, and Aster. Layla is a journalist wanting to get her big shot, so she sees this as her way to the insider world of clubs and celebrities. Tommy is a musician and also Ira's secret son that not even Ira knows and Aster is a stunning ethnic girl who wants out from under her parent's control and to make it as an actress/model. On the other side of the actual celebrity world, we have Madison - a current actress who is HOT at the moment and Ryan who is her Hollywood boyfriend who also is on the way out. During the competition we read as each of the three will interact with Madison and when she disappears will become suspects in her so-called Murder. Filled with text messages of threatening to expose Madison's past - someone wants her to disappear but what will happen when they have the opportunity to use Layla, Tommy, and Aster as scapegoats? Find out in Book #1 Unrivaled which though the tagline read Gossip Girl meets Pretty Little Liars, I found more Gossip Girl like than Pretty Little Liars and had hoped that in this book we could have got a deeper look into Madison's past, but let's hope that happens in Book #2 Blacklist.

3,5 Sterne!

In spite of seeing quite a few rant reviews on Unrivaled (as well as some gushing ones), I was ultimately intrigued by the synopsis, so I decided to give it a go. California? Models? Mystery? What could be better?

Unfortunately, as with many of my reads lately, this one didn't particularly meet my expectations. I found it to be rather long and boring with many undeveloped characters.

For a brief summary, Unrivaled revolves around models Layla, Aster, Tommy, and Madison, who is the most well-known model in Hollywood. When the other three models receive VIP invitations to the nightlife in LA, they take advantage of them right away as they enter a competition against Madison to replace her as the hottest model in LA. But then Madison goes missing, and now it is up to them to chronicle what happened.

I felt like the four main characters of this book just weren't developed enough. They were all stuck-up in their own ways, but that is a trait I can assign to all of them. They just weren't memorable, and they had no traits that helped me distinguish them from each other. If I hadn't been writing this review right now, I doubt I'd even be able to remember their names.

This book's plot was also not very up to par. A whole lot of nothingness happened for the first 80% of the book, which surprises me because there is supposed to be such a big mystery aspect to it. By the time the plot *finally* sped up by the end, it was kind of too late for me to be excited since I had already been sitting through over 300 pages of boringness!

All in all, I was expecting a fun, flashy story about the real struggles teen models in Hollywood face, but basically, all I got was blah. This book had such a captivating premise and the writing was amazing, but all the other more important elements that make for a good story were lacking. This book did end with a cliffhanger, though, so I still want to continue on with the series and see if things get better.

If you're curious about how teen models really live their lives, then Unrivaled is the book for you. It paints a great picture of what they actually go through every single day, but just don't expect the characters and the slow-moving plot to wow you.
