The Commander

Rate this book
What happens when the hunter decides his prey is worth more than just the capture?

Kicked out of the closest safe-town and desperate for food, Cara gambles everything and loses.

Captured by alien soldiers, she resolves to fight or die, but the base commander claims her for questioning instead. After a terrifying interrogation, he offers her a chance to run.

Only one catch.

He's going to chase her.

The Commander is an enemies-to-lovers dark romance where the civilized manners of society no longer apply. Cara is captured, claimed and assaulted with bad pop culture humor (among other things) This spicy story contains strong themes and language suitable for adults and might not be for every reader. Please read responsibly.

DNF @ 57% - I guess alien porn just ain’t for me. The alien hero is just grotesque and we’re still learning new repulsive things about his body/appearance midway. We get some new horror detailed after/during every sex scene. And this book is 90% sex. Which would be fine, I guess, if the hero was attractive. Instead it’s just giving me the willies in all the wrong ways. I should find him MORE attractive as the book progresses not LESS. Plus I’m bored. This book is missing some good drama that isn’t sex. There’s no angst. She’s scared and confused, but that’s really it. I don’t feel a connection between the characters which makes the sex not sexy for me.

I tried.

Dark sci-fi with all my favorite kinks

There's nothing I love more than the extreme need to mate and the biological urge to procreate. It's mindless and hot and sings to the breeding kink girly in me.

That said, this book needed some serious serious editing. The format kept changing, the fonts didn't match and typos abounded. It's giving lack of dedication and poor love for your art.

The plot itself was a bit convoluted in places, but not hard to follow. Some of the steamy scenes were too long and controlled. I needed the hero to lose it, he was always way too cool and collected.

Finally, I think the author went a bit to heavy on the 'this is a true alien looking alien'. I know many sci-fi romance readers complain about the alien heroes being too human, but the author might've overcorrected a bit with the abundant descriptions. However, I'm a Susan Trombley fan, this is nothing for me 🌚

Overall, I'm leaning towards a more positive than negative experience.

I didn’t enjoy this as much as other books by this author. It’s problematic for me in the same way books about BBW generally are when authors tell you the whole book how fat the fmc is. So let’s call the H - Bastian a BBA( Big Bad Alien)— He is given the same treatment here as a BBW. His looks are over described and fixated on. We get it- he’s freaking ugly. Here’s what happens when authors over describe their leads. I can’t picture myself in the romance. I don’t want to know about the minutiae. I want to Step Into the book and make it my world. I mean almost 3/4 of the book the author is still telling us how gross he is in excruciating detail. Meanwhile the fmc has red hair. Don’t tell me how fat or ugly a MC is over and over again. Let me use my imagination when I read so I can enter the story. Otherwise it reads like a boring manual about ugly BBA’s or fat BBw’s.

I love a bit of alien romance especially if the alien in question actually looks like an alien so obviously I was all over this and super excited to give this a go. I have enjoyed this author’s work previously so my hopes were high this would be a hit and I’m happy to report I wasn’t disappointed.

Set on a futuristic Earth after a meteor destabilised society setting them back in terms of civilised progression. Then after this disaster came a race of aliens called the Sarrian’s who are farming earth for its resources and using the humans to do all of the grunt work. They fixed their towns and agreed to supply their basic needs as long as they cooperated and abided by the laws set in place by them the human's new alien overlords.

Cara is a human and she was born after Earth fell so it’s all she’s ever known. She was taught by her dad to live off the land and away from the alien-controlled towns. When he died without options and lonely she conformed and moved to the town of Springfield. When she’s persuaded by her only friend to move to Dalewood she finds herself in a situation she didn’t account for. Now Cara along with her friend Brenda is living outside with no food and limited options.

Caught out after curfew by the muzzle heads, brainless grunts for their Prime battler masters Cara is terrified. When the Commander himself takes an interest in Cara it's game over because once he scents the aroma of her fear he’s addicted especially when he recognises her as his mate. Bastian never wanted a mate hence his assignment far away from the females of his kind but despite this, he can’t help but want the small human and it’s not long before he’s setting in motion a claiming of the old ways.

This was well written and very easy to digest be aware it has dark themes so definitely check triggers before reading and at least initially it's also very dub-con which seemed to fit and felt authentic just because of how alien this all was. The spice was high but it did feel integral to the plot. It was incredibly erotic so if that’s not your scene probably best to give this a miss as it was a huge portion of the story. Finally, be aware that the hero in this Bastian is very alien he’s described as that way and definitely isn’t human, he doesn’t look or think or act like a human male, far from it. So again not your scene walk on by. I’m only mentioning it because it’s unfair to judge this story based on how alien Bastian is when it’s literally an alien romance. But If you’re partial to aliens that look like aliens like i am then this one has you covered for sure.

An alien romance novella with excellent world building and character development. The alien in this book is very similar to the one in the Predator movies (think of the jaw or lower part of mouth that opens up like a door showing another longer tongue or proboscis and the overall propensity to kill everything on site as in the predator movies) or as mentioned by the author a mix of a panther and Tyrannosaurus Rex. Cara our heroine is caught by the hero for violating the curfew and was taken in for questioning where he realizes that she is his true mate. Together they tries to taken on a corrupt mayor, untrustworthy friends and the Sarrain priestess who control the mother ship from orbit just for the right to exist in peace. In that journey they both learn about each other, their differences and their worlds. The story line is solid if you don't discount this as smut. My only complaint is that there are some typos and that the sex /love scenes were too long.

Loved how “other” the alien MMC is in terms of his culture. You’d think that would be a given with an alien but A LOT of alien romance picture aliens as very close variations of humans, which I always find a bit disappointing.

In The Commander, the MMC is also unapologetically alien. That means there are clear non-con aspects and there’s not guilt about it, whatsoever. That’s just how his species mates. I liked that aspect, and it ends with HEA, but I know it might not be for everyone.

Loved the post-apocalyptic vibe, it’s really gritty. Loved the world building so much, I hope we get more instalments from this universe.

4 - ⭐⭐⭐⭐

“No one and nothing will take you from me. I will pave the way to our home with the blood of your enemies and fill all the rooms with the laughter of our children…”

The Commander is a dark adult dystopian sci-fi erotica standalone. Written in dual third person pov, the story follows Bastian and Cara, a human and an alien brought together by biology and fate.

Set in a future where the world has been overtaken by aliens, the surviving humans struggle to exist in small communities scattered around and tight curfews enforced by the beings that brought them down. Cara is a human who finds herself kicked out of her community and in a desperate attempt to survive ends up captured by one of the most brutal and powerful aliens, Commanders.

Bred to be an unstopping machine, Bastian feels betrayed by the Goddess and empire that rules worlds. His goal is to simply create chaos and when he comes across a human female breaking curfew his initial thought is to have some fun. Yet when he finds himself drawn to her in ways he never imagined he decides it is not enough to play but rather...to mate.

If you enjoy dark romance with a bit of taboo but still will have a happy ending this book is so easy to devour. I did it in a single evening. It was that easy.

Cara is a woman who just doesn't have the greatest luck but she is loyal and desperate. While she doesn't want to be drawn to Bastian because of the legacy of aliens in her life, biology refuses to be denied. She also will not go down crying; she will bring this alien to his knees alongside her.

Bastian has this odd quirk of liking to use old media quotes and phrases that can sometimes be at odds with his cruel demeanor. He has no qualms with violence and subjugation but once he realizes what Cara is to him you see him become a bit softer (only to her). I appreciated how he liked to make fun of the fact he was softer now but refused to change it.

The spice in this book is 5 spicy peppers out of 5 spicy peppers. This book has non consensual/dubious consent spice in the initial moments because...well he's a seven foot tall brutal alien who is holding her captive. The caveat here is they find themselves both in a mating rut and while Bastian understands what that is and fully embraces it, Cara is confused and initially overwhelmed. So essentially biology takes over. This spice is extremely detailed and graphic. In addition Bastian has some very interesting attributes (alien Omegaverse style) which further the graphic detail. I thought the spice was well written and hardens me back to my Lora Leigh days but with more aliens. As these characters find time for conversation and connection they do come to love each other but the first two spicy scenes are angry, feral and antagonistic with prey elements and breeding.

The story itself is on the lighter side. I admittedly don't have the strongest grasp of the overarching world at this time. I felt the main focus was Bastian and Cara's tumultuous romance. There are some side characters introduced but they are very limited and static and I clocked their motivations a mile away. The initial chapters are a bit slow but once Cara and Bastian are together the story just powers through. I enjoyed the banter, the antagonism, and the dynamics between them. I felt the tension of the climax was brought together quite nicely and enjoyed seeing Cara re-examine the life she once knew. I liked seeing Bastian and her work together for a future that this world doesn't seem to want. I also liked the seeds planted for future books. The ending is a beautiful HEA...and there's a bonus chapter that I ADORED!

Overall, if you love dark romance with alien omegaverse this book will give you exactly what you want. I have adore Isoellen's previous 12 sectors series and this gives me the same fun! I am excited to see where this goes!

Thank you to the author for this arc!

I enjoyed seeing them work together for a future this world doesn’t want. The ending is a beautiful HEA with a bonus chapter I adored. If you love dark romance with an alien omega verse, this book is perfect for you. I’ve loved Isoellen’s previous book and eagerly await more of her work.

The Commander is a dark, adult sci-fi erotica stand-alone. Bastian and Cara, a human and an alien, are brought together in a handmaid-type regime world where aliens rule. Cara, banished from her community, is captured by the ruthless and powerful Commander Bastian. Initially, Bastian sees Cara as a plaything, but he soon becomes drawn to her and wants to mate. I finished it in one sitting.

The initial scenes are intense due to the seven-foot-tall alien and the human captive. The spice is well-written. As they spend time together, they develop feelings, but the first two spicy scenes are angry, feral, and antagonistic with prey elements and breeding.

I enjoyed Cara and Bastian’s banter and the relationships and dynamics between them. I would definitely reread this book, I will happily eat up anything she reads and none has ever dissopointed me.

Thanks to Isoellen for this arc!
Can’t wait for more!

"A shudder rippled through him at her touch. He was such a massive, indestructible creature, but the soft brush of her tongue across the tip of his made him shake."

The commander is a dark romance with an alien, that really looks alien, with all that weird sexy bits, morally grey character and a long list of triggers.
Post-apocalyptic settings,a human(or maybe not) female is captured and dominated by The commander.
I really liked to see him fall hard for her,in his twisted way.
The steamy scenes are dark and scorching hot, with dubious consent.
Special mention for a delicious twisted humor weaved into the story, with hilarious references of Gen X.
If you like your romance dark, raw and intense The commander is perfect for you!

Like many other readers who love Isoe Dark/Isoellen's work, I could not wait for The Commander to be released. Damn, I sure as hell was not disappointed! This is sooooo damn good. A dark, dystopian alien erotic romance that had me hooked from the very beginning, taking my heart and vaginamite on a wild ride.
Cara was a strong, caring, and independent woman, and I loved how Isoe Dark, wrote her inability to submit to Commander Bastian and still maintain her strong side. Now to Commander Bastian. Oh Bastian. 🤤 One of the hottest aliens I've ever read. Geeezus! If you love your aliens big, dominant, morally grey, and blue, with many interesting body parts and bodily fluids, then you'll love this. The spicy scenes were off the charts. Pray your tingly bits don't explode people! 🥵🌶🌶🌶🌶

A sinful surprise from this author. The Commander wasn't exactly what I thought it was going to be and I had some problems trying to visualize him (since he's non-human) but I didn't let that distract me from enjoying this read at all. Hey, I'm getting older, so my brain doesn't want to work so hard for certain parts. Although it was all in for the intimate parts, LOL. Dude, I want to volunteer!!! For the hot and sweating sexy parts, I mean. Some of the other parts, I might be running away, too. Who am I kidding, I probably won't survive this world, LOL. But yeah, I definitely want some more of this universe. Fingers crossed for more!

I thought I would really like this book but it wasn’t for me. I was excited at first to read a darker alien book and it sounded interesting. The plot was interesting enough that I wanted to finish it but I skimmed some of it. The main thing I did not like was that she was a puddle every time he was near her it was just instant lust every. Single. Time. I get why cause of the whole mate bond but it’s just not for me. I did like her character and I felt bad for her and the mmc was okay I mean he didn’t really have feelings much so lol anyhoo the ending was nice and I loved that he was actually a scary alien dude. Lots of spice and it was well written.

I love a dubious good guy. It’s even better when he’s not human.

This was a fantastic read filled with lots of filthy talk and k.nky fun. Pheromones and alien characteristics add extra spice to this darker romance and I am SO here for it.

The FMC is feisty and determined but her new alien mate has even stronger instincts to mate, breed and keep her.

Tons of humour interspersed throughout made this a really fun read even with it being a bit dark.

I totally recommend this if you like darker romance and aliens.

Dark alien fated mates book with unique anatomy. Kinky, gritty, and surprisingly hilarious. As much as I enjoyed the plot and steam on the whole, my favorite part was the misused 80s/90s lingo by this imposing, controlling, hulk of an alien. Tickled me pink the whole way through and added bites of levity through the grittier details. Don't miss the inhuman song either!

Spicy, male female, 3rd person dual point of view, paranormal romance. Fantastic worldbuilding in a dystopian setting. Very steamy with some primal, dubcon, and a kind of fated mate aspect. I thoroughly enjoyed both main characters and the pops of humor. 🔥

It's such a surprising story. This is a new to me author, and I am glad I found her. This book is so different from other alien books that I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. Without giving too much away, there are some differences with human males I did not see coming.

Wonderful read!

The book started slowly and I wondered how the story would develop but once Bastain got going, it was a wild rollercoaste.
I loved Cara's independent mind and spirit and I especially loved Bastian's use of earth's popular culture phrases.
I loved it!

I’m a big fan of Isoellen’s writing and I’ve reread the 12 Sectors books a few times. Monster is my favorite (obviously). I was very excited to hear that she was writing The Commander as Isoe Dark. It’s definitely a little darker in tone than the 12 Sectors series, with non-con and primal vibes. Bastian is… a hot, methodical mate who assumes he knows exactly what he’s going to do with Cara, but it turns in to something much different.

Cara is his biological mate, carrying old code in her DNA. And Bastian is all in for our girl pretty quickly. Their chemistry was fire! I particularly loved that just because they’re biological mates, it’s not all instant rainbows and sunshine. When you’re mates from two very different species, you think differently, act differently, have literally a completely different society. And Isoe did a great job at showing the small bumps that would come from that mating. Cara can be emotional and Bastian is all logic, except when it comes to Cara.

This is a dystopian setting and the details of that are woven perfectly in to the story as it goes along. Control has taken over the planet and keeps things running as they want them too, with humans allowed to exist on the fringes so long as they don’t cause problems. Bastian is a battler Commander. A beast of an alien, and he won’t let anyone or anything hurt his Kitten. It doesn’t take him long to start putting plans in place that keep his Mate safe. He’s strong and hot and keeps his Kitten sated. It was 🥵. Unique world, fasted paced, and fun sexy times. What more could you want from an alien romance lol
January 17, 2025
First things first, this story has some dark themes, so check the trigger warnings first!

Isoe Dark managed to write a dominant, high handed, easy to hate MMC, with a strong, independent but submissive FMC and bring them together with the MMC guiding the FMC to accept her submissive side, whilst also humanising the MMC with humour.
It was honestly incredible to watch Bastian and Cara/Kitten go through their story and grow/evolve as characters.
Isoe Dark uses humour to take an MMC who can only be described as a walking red flag and transform him into someone people would give a chance to and an FMC who is submissive without tuning straight into a pushover, not an easy task
