Three things make billionaire Jim Halcyon’s to-do list: women, work…and more women. It’s a perfect agenda for a rich shifter who has no problem letting his inner grizzly out to play. From the bright lights of Vegas, to the sophisticated action of New York—he’s got the money and the power to do anything he wants.

Anything, except resist the lure of Lady Luck, an ancient copper coin he gambles yearly to possess. Jim is determined to regain control of the pretty penny, and damn if he’ll let any bit of eye candy distract him from his goal. Not even the mesmerizing woman in the middle of the casino floor with the shimmering hair and enormous green eyes.

With a life-changing move ahead of her, Lillie’s finagled a temporary layover en route to her future. She’s got five days to soak in new experiences, and while Vegas is too big and shiny and loud for her shy bear self, she’s eager to do this up right. It’s the last chance she’s got to let her hair down.

Until his challenge begins, Jim is more than willing to oblige Lillie’s wish for a final fling. Only Lady Luck has some twists of fate planned for them both…

Copper King is the first novella in the new Takhini Shifters series by Vivian Arend, it's currently only available in the Alpha's After Dark anthology but will be available to buy separately on the 1st of May. These stories will all be set in the same world as Vivian Arend's Granite Lake and Takhini Wolves series and there may be a slight crossover of characters across all of the series but the stories are all designed to stand alone so you can pick this up even if you're new to the world. Copper King fits into the time line just before the first Takhini Wolves book, Black Gold, the two main characters did make an appearance in Diamond Dust where they are an established couple but this is the story of how they first met so really is a great introduction to them both.

Lillie is looking for some fun in her last few days of freedom before she settles into the life her family has chosen for her. She doesn't have long and Vegas isn't her ideal destination since she is scared of crowds but it was the best option available to her and she's going to make the most of it by having a final fling - if she can find the right man that is. Jim is in Vegas with his friend Damon for their annual contest to decide who gets to keep the lucky coin they bought together as teenagers. It's been a while since Jim won and so this year he's more determined than ever and he's not going to let anyone distract him from the contest. Not even the beautiful bear shifter who has captured his attention more than any other woman in years. He might find Lillie's scent irresistible but he has more important things to deal with - unless Damon gets his way and manages to play matchmaker that is.

I've been a fan of Vivian Arend's shifter stories ever since I first discovered the Granite Lake Wolves books back in 2010 so of course I couldn't wait to start reading Copper King. She is brilliant at writing sweet romances that are full of humour and wonderful chemistry and I wasn't disappointed with her latest novella. It made a really nice change to read about a different kind of shapeshifter, I read so many books about werewolves or big cat shifters but I don't think I've read one about bears before. Don't get me wrong I love my wolves and jaguars but I had fun learning about the bears and how their instincts differ to those of the other shifters.

Jim and Lillie are both great characters and they were really well suited to each other. Lillie is quite shy and very nervous around lots of people which brings out all of Jim's protective instincts. More than anything they have fab chemistry though and I enjoyed seeing them get to know each other. The twist about how Lillie ended up in Vegas in the first place was very amusing and I enjoyed the case of mistaken identities that followed. Don't worry if you're new to Vivian Arend's world because you can easily pick up Copper King even if you've not read any of her previous stories. However, if you like this one then I'd highly recommend the rest of the Granite Lake and Tahkini Wolves series because they all have the same humour and some fantastic characters that I'm sure you'll love as much as I do.

So I have never heard of this author, before I was given a opportunity to read this book. The first time I saw this cover, I knew I wanted to read this book. I will admit, that I do have a weakness for shifters, but BEARS?? Oh my, Oh my, I think I might be suffering from heat stroke here LOL. This story does have some focus on shifters, but there is more of a erotic twist to the story. So you see as you start reading that it is a short novella, and its focus is a much more sensual nature, but there is a charming love story attached as well. I found these characters quite endearing, and I just couldn't get enough of them. There was so many fun scenes of playfulness and a charming quality to their quick bond that forms. I did feel however, that the love connection wasn't as strong as I expected it to be. It felt like they meet, have delicious sex, and then fall in love, too quick for my taste, however I did feel charmed by the style of the story and it definitely won me over by the very end. I am very excited to read more from this author, I can see even from this short novella, that future books are definitely something to get excited about. Very impressed with the way this author tells a story of adventure, playful bear shifters, and enough humor to satisfy any witty heart. Adventure and sizzling sensuality all rolled into one!!

This kicks off VA's new Takhini Shifters series and tells us the story of how Jim and Lillie got together. We first met Jim & Lillie in Diamond Dust, which is part of the Takhini Wolves series and having already liked them I was pleased to see they were included in this series.

I found this to be a great little story that had all of Ms Arend's usual trademarks making this a very steamy and enjoyable little read.

Copper King was the first book in the Takhini Shifters series by Vivian Arend.

I don’t normally read this genre so my review will be short and sweet. Copper King was a short, fun and sexy read about bear shifters. It had a secretive side that unfolded as the story progressed and ultimately worked out well. Although not a genre I would read every day, it was a fun change and I enjoyed the shifting as well as the characters (Jim and Lilly) and the storyline. Book two focuses on Damon, a wolf shifter and Jim’s best friend, and one I definitely need to read as well.

I’ve always been a fan of Vivian Arend’s shifter stories because they are fun and entertaining. We originally got to know the Takhini Wolves and in the last book, MOON SHINE, we also got to know the bears. I’m pretty excited that we are delving into more from this world in this spin off series and can’t wait to read more about them!

So think of COPPER KING as the billionaire shifter story. Jim is rich, successful in his own right, and maybe sometimes a bit too uptight. That’s why he can count on his best friend Damon (a wolf) to shake things up a bit. Every year they figure out an over the top way of determining who wins a certain lucky coin for the year. Except this year, Jim might’ve found something more important to invest his time in than competing for a coin.

Where Ms. Arend’s wolves have fated mates and that pull is instant and undeniable, bears don’t. So when Jim meets Lillie it’s the attraction that calls to him. And after they spend time together, it’s a genuine ease of being together. I kind of like this a lot because as much as I love reading about fated mates, sometimes that can be a bit too much insta love for me. I really like to let them develop those feelings naturally as well. So this was a nice change of pace for these stories. (Hint hint, more bears!!!)

Jim is attentive, possessive and sometimes overbearing (get it?). He takes over Lillie’s life in just a few days. Lillie on the other hand has always been a little sheltered. She’s not too sure of herself, a bit of a recluse. She has a rebel side but it was always squashed down by her family. And now she’s on the run from something, hiding a secret, and that’s when she meets Jim. Her one last wild ride of freedom, or so she thought.

I think their personalities complemented each other very well. The story was short but it packed enough romance to keep me completely satisfied. The ending was a bit rushed to the “I love yous” but I liked how the author ended it otherwise. Yes, I did see that coming all the way from almost the beginning but that didn’t take away from enjoying the story.

Damon as a side character provided so much entertainment! He’s the wild friend, the one that maybe throws caution to the wind sometimes, the fun player one. I cannot wait to read his book next!

I was pulled into the story from the very first sentence. I haven't read Viv's paranormal series in a while and am a book behind in both series. But when I was offered an early read of this first Takhini Shifters novella I jumped right on it and no regrets, even if my read-in-order OCD was screaming at me to read DIAMOND DUST first. Then the author offered a bit of timeline info in the reader note where I learned this story takes places even before BLACK GOLD! And my OCD was effectively gagged :)

Reading a Vivian Arend book is like being wrapped up in a nice toasty blanket during a cold winter's day. I read COPPER KING in one sitting with a smile on my face from start to finish. It showcases Viv's talent to combine lightness and humor with a wonderful love story that included a great twist at the end. Well-written because though you know there's more going on than meets the eye, you don't put the pieces together until the very end. Brilliantly done! I loved the characters, the setting, the story and the sexy scenes and can't wait to read more of the Tahkini Shifters.

Fave Quote
Jim never understood why other people talked about having angels and devils on their shoulders to work out moral dilemmas. All he had was one raunchy bastard and one filthy fucker, and it was scary how fast they got to the point.

I am not feeling this book. I'm around 39% in and I'm going to DNF this one.

My first thought is that I am very disappointed that the lead couple slept together with no condom. I get that it was to be a one night stand that is turning into a few more nights, but that still does not give them a pass to not use protection. They don't know each other at all!! Yes, they both are shifters, but the author did not say they couldn't get prego, so I'm waiting for the every OH SHIT moment.

Next, I’m not feeling the characters, no connection to either of them. Also I don't get the heroine and why she keeps thinking this is her last hurrah. Is she getting married? Is she dyeing? Why did she sneak off to Vegas? So far their is no indication on what her deal is. So Ya, I've got questions and the oh shit moment on my brain which is just not working for me.

Copper King was not the book for me. If the blurb intrigues you, I urge you to give it a shot. At the time I picked this one up for free off Amazon. Just because it did not work for me does not mean it won’t for you.

I'm just gonna be blunt and say that I didn't like this novella. At all! There was a few things I just couldn't get passed. Like the spelling of the word cum. When you're writing an erotica (or any kind of book for that matter) you should know that cum isn't spelled 'come'. Huge pet peeve of mine. If the story was good I'd be able to look past It. But the story wasn't any good. It was boring and totally predictable. It is a bear shifter book & I've never read a bear shifter book. I felt like the hero bear shifter Jim, should've been this badass, hot & sexy, aggressive alpha male but, he wasn't. When be tried to be all alpha male in the sexy department it was wicked weak & felt forced. Also, the heroine (it should say something that I just finished this book & can't remember her name) Lillie is a bear shifter too. I didn't care for her one way or the other. I feel like if you're a woman shifter than she shouldn't be so meek or timid. That's just me though. There wasn't really any sort of plot here either. All you really need to know is that they meet it Vegas & both only want a fling, they fall in love, have boring sex and live happily ever after. The End.

Boring! After reading other reviews I wondered if I had read a different story. There isn't any backstory. How did Jim become a billionaire? Why is Lilly's friend so worried about her? Jim is supposedly a workaholic, but there is no evidence of that in the story. Jim is supposedly a grizzly ( I would think that makes him fierce),but all his growling and violence is in his head. And I hate to say it, but even the sex scenes were 'meh', not hot, just boring. This story was not interesting enough to entice me to read the sequel.

Very fast novella read. I haven’t read anything by this author previously. The characters seemed pretty rounded. I really like Lili she was refreshing as a character and seemed super fun. Novellas always seem really rushed to me. There was basically some insta-love with no real opposition or adversity. I really liked the little twist there at the end how convenient lol. Either way it was enjoyable and based off this writing style here I would actually like to try some of the full length novels.

Cute read, not that memorable but was enough to pass some time and mark another book off my ever growing reading list. The mystery behind Lillie's secrecy was a bit funny but felt a little anti-climactic to me. Damon was a bit funny and I wouldn't mind reading his book. Jim and the whole coin thing were just words on the page for me. There was a happy ending and the journey to get there was relatively painless, so yay I guess

Three things make billionaire Jim Halcyon’s to-do list: women, work…and more women.
With a life-changing move ahead of her, Lillie’s finagled a temporary layover en route to her future.

This was a cute short story that I rather enjoyed. Jim is definitely an alpha male. He suffered some tragedy recently and is having a hard time coming to terms with how things are. Insert his best friend Damon. Damon wants Jim to relax and just have fun for a few days. I loved the dynamic between these two. Damon was the playful charming wolf to Jim's brooding workaholic bear. I cannot wait to read Damon's book.

Lillie destiny was already chosen for her and her shy bear, but she finds a way to escape it for five more days. What better place to help you escape then Las Vegas. There she runs into Jim and sparks fly immediately. For some reason Jim is able to clam Lillie's bashful and easily frightened bear. Jim feels an overwhelming need to protect Lillie, but reminds himself its only temporary. These two have to choose between the connection they feel or the plans they made before meeting each other.

I would recommend this book for anyone who wants a short, sweet paranormal romance.

This is definitely a different twist on a shifter book. Even though the male lead is a rich man, it doesn't come across as one of those Billionaire stories. I love the surprise twist to the story :) Well developed characters and interesting storyline.

Harmless. Not even remotely as funny or hot as it thinks it is. Do not expect a plot. But harmless.
Get's the 3rd star knocked out by means of treating an object as if it was a woman and implying that before The One (TM) appeared, women where treated like objects.

Jim and his friend Damion are in Vegas for a week. Damion is trying his hardest to get his friend to relax and enjoy himself. Starting with dumping his phone into a pitcher of beer. Now Jim has no choice but to go along with the plan. Although the plan gets derailed by a gorgeous copper haired beauty. Lilly is in a Vegas for a one time fling before she has to commit to her obligations. Jim is just what she needed and they have a great time together. But soon enough she falls for Jim and has to end her previous engagement. But….I’m not going to spoil the ending. It’s a great story!

So there is to be a series of Novellas from this world. There are times when I really want a short book to fill a couple hours. This series is going to be on my list, for sure!

This was fun. Jim is a Grizzly Shifter. His friend Damon is a wolf. Lillie is a black bear. Jim and Damon are in Vegas for their yearly bet. They bet to carry a very old, very expensive, copper penny with them for a year. They call her Lady Luck and Jim seems to think she IS his luck.

Lillie is in Vegas and has a "bucket list" of sorts. There is an element of mystery over why she has this list. A huge change is coming in her life and she's pretty sure she won't be able to be as free as she is now. So, she takes pole dancing lessons at one point. Pretty hot scene as Jim watches her final after the lesson.

Jim is rich. He's suffered a great loss, too. His friend thinks he needs to unwind a bit. Lillie and her little black bear pull him right in. Lots of steamy scenes in this one. They both agree that this is a fling. Just a fling. They both have lives to get back to and a fling won't hurt, right?

There's a fun twist at the end and it left me wanting more of these shifters. I think Damon needs to find his mate next!

*Thank you, NetGalley and Vivian Arend, for the opportunity to read Copper King.

I'm such a fan of Vivian Arends shifters–her Takhini Wolves are the best!

But one of my very favorite stories by her is Tangled Tinsel, a Christmas short (http://www.amazon.com/Tangled-Tinsel-... ) that is full of fun & just a great little read!

I tell you that because this story, Copper King, is very much in the same spirit. Casino owner Grizzly shifter Jim Halcyon is all about having a good time with life—and women are pretty much the top of that pleasure list. Jim's a love and leave them kind of guy—but leave them smiling!

Ready to embark on a new adventure with his closest friend—a crazy, fun adventure to win the coin Lady Luck—Jim's bestie decides he needs a woman to help him cheer up. Only the woman he's targeted for Jim isn't the one Jim zeros in on—she's the stunning woman across the room who looks like she's trying to shrink into her clothes to hide. Yeah, right as she HITS THE JACKPOT!!

Lillie has come to Las Vegas for one last fling—she doesn't want to draw attention to herself, but she wants to have a blast...and maybe a fling! And when she sees the sexy Jim closing in on her she's sunk. He's a hunk of grizzly she just can't pass up!

Jim and Lillie find themselves having such a great time, and enjoying each other so much...yet they both see the deadline of their fling looming. Jim on his Lady Luck adventure, and Lillie to meet obligations she can't escape...or can she?

LOVED it! Such a fun read. Short but full of sexiness, and shifter possessiveness & just yummy goodness!! Rich, shifter, possessive, hot...Yup, Vivian Arend hits every high point in this novella!!

I want MORE!! NOW!!

Jim is such a passionate man, "he was ready to take her somewhere, strip her and return to this position. Maybe with her knees on either side of his hips, so he'd be able to cup her a** and help her ride. His bear rumbled in interest. His human agreed - his co** was harder now than before, but he had to do the right thing and make sure she wasn't with a partner already." Lillie she's just as passionate, "I'm pretty sure I do." Lillie slipped on her tippy toes and pressed a kiss to his rough jawline. "Last hurrah, and all that. I definitely have this on my to-do list." There were so many things she wanted, but with the thick length in her hands, his hips rolling slowly against her in a smooth rhythm, she could put the rest of them aside." Jim can be bossy when he wants something, "you're staying the night," Jim informed her." And he can be demanding at times, "he growled, and the hair on her arms stood on end. He pushed through a door, slamming it shut behind them and engaging the lock. "I want to eff you." he said." I love when my shifters are bossy and know what they want and Jim was all those things.

I was pulled into this story from the first sentence, OH MY it was good, it has been a while since I've last read a book by Vivian. So reading the first book in the "Takhini Shifters" was definitely what I needed to read. It captivated & kept me guessing until just near the end of the book.

Grizzly shifter Jim, is more at home surrounded by people then he is isolated, his best friend wolf shifter Damon is with him. Every year they set up a dare in the hopes of winning the lucky coin... Lillie has decided to have some fun before her life changes forever, she's in Vegas, much to her bears dislike & has a bucket list to fill before the weeks out...

I loved the variety of shifters in this book, from wolves & bears to pathers & lions, then there was the secret shifter society intertwined with the everyday sites & sounds of Vegas. The steamy scenes, the banter, then the secrets... everything fell into place easily in this sotry. I can't wait to read some more from the "Takhini Shifters" series.

3.5 star decent story. Good narration (audible whispersync review)

This was an interesting story. It was short so not full of filler moments but I would have liked it to be a bit longer as it would have developed the characters a little more. I liked Jim as a hero, he was strong, handsome, rich and sexy. I also liked Lillie's character. But again a bit underdeveloped. The chemistry was good between the two and yes they did like to have sex a lot of it. So this short story is not rated G by no means.

The story line and plot was good. I liked the little twist there at the end. And like I said if the story had been a little longer the characters and the story line could have been more developed, resulting in a much better story. There is a lot of dialogue throughout the story, and I like lots of dialogue. So that was a plus.

As for the narration, it was good I like Tatiana Sokolov a/k/a Tanya Eby. She does a good narration, the men sound like men. Everyone gets their own distinct voice and she reads with emotion.

Fun read about a rich bearshifter who is in Vegas with his best friend a wolf shifter, he meets his mate and spends several days with her before they must all go on to their own lives. The end has an interesting twist just to spice it up.

I know this doesn't sound all that...but the story was truly enjoyable and a great start to a new series by Vivian Arend!

I adore how she made the characters believable, easy to care about them. The male protagonist was more fully developed than the female lead, this did not take away from the story but it was a big surprise to find out she was Scottish when it wasn't mentioned in the novel until the end.

I enjoyed the book and gave it a 3.5 star rating and a recommendation to check it out..the read is quick. I'm looking forward to more stories in this series.

I had a false start with this one after receiving a demo copy from NetGalley so I was only able to give what I read three stars. I'm so happy I purchased a copy and was able to read the complete story. I adored this little novella. It was short but very sweet and very complete. The character's motives were clearly laid out and their motives were genuine and pure. I love the fact that Lillie and Jim's declarations about one another were so honest. It's funny how they came upon the discovery of who they were to one another but a truly sweet encounter with Lillie trying to protect Jim...from himself *LOL*. Arend does a wonderful job with the start of the Takhini Shifters and continuation of the Granite Lake Wolves shifter series. I look forward to seeing what she does with Damon.

Right on. Well done. Loved it all. Quick & sweet with plenty of action and heat. Intsta lust does play a role here for sure, but I wasn't thrown for a loop by either of our MCs getting caught up in it. Great build, nice end, and no editing errors that I could see. Clean, and oh so naughty, in the best sort of way. Perfect. : )

I read this story as a part of the Alphas After Dark Anthology. I will be looking into more books from this series and author.

This is a shifter romance that I think is written really well with a new twist. Jim " our hero" comes to Vegas with his friend Damon for their annual challenge to see who will hold their treasure for the year. Our heroine Lilly comes to Vegas to spend just 1 week free before she goes to face an unknowing future

Jim and Lilly meet and fall in love but neither one can change what they have to do. I don't want to give spoilers. Good book for an afternoon sit down. :)

I've read Vivian Arend's Six Pack Ranch series, and loved it, but this is the first of her Takhini Shifters series I've read. I loved this first book. Jim and Lillie were made for each other, but with a little suspense thrown in, it looked like they weren't meant to be together. I loved the characters, and Jim's best friend Damon. The dialogue between Jim and Damon was delightful. I look forward to reading more of Ms. Arend's shifter stories.
