Two scarred souls finding love when they least expect it.

Harper

I wasn’t a keeper.

Guys just didn’t pick me, and after one too many threw me away, my heart couldn’t take it anymore.

When I was traded to the Buffalo Warriors, I knew things wouldn’t be any different.

Skate. Score goals. Work out. Repeat. That’s my life.

I’m living the dream by playing professional hockey, and I have some amazing friends.

I’m happy. Really, I am. Or at least I’m trying to be.

Until the night I run into Luca.

Luca

I had love once, only to have it ripped away when he married someone else.

Problem was, I never got my heart back.

I’ve built walls so high no one can touch me. I’m only interested in hookups, one and done.

And I can’t forget lacrosse, because it’s all I have.

I’m fine. Or at least I’m trying to be.

Until the night I run into Harper.

One chance encounter sparks a flame that consumes both men in the most delicious of ways. But when shadows from the past threaten to pull them apart, will they survive, or will their hearts be shattered again?

Crossed Sticks is a romance that’s anything but easy—and worth every moment. While the story is high on angst and deals with serious topics such as depression and anxiety, you can also expect witty banter, hilarious text conversations, public hookups, friends with benefits, grand romantic gestures, and exciting hockey scenes. Even better, there’s high heat, light kink with tons of dirty talk, found family, and a Happy Ever After that will leave you breathless.

Crossed Sticks is book one of an exciting new series of standalones, Buffalo Warriors Hockey.

These two, my goodness, both have so much weight from their past on their shoulders, they let their future slip away because of it… almost.
One heard more than once he was no boyfriend material, nothing to keep, the other had such a bad relationship experience it pushed him into depression and anxiety. Both are determined to keep men at arm's length and only get close for a fvck at a one-night stand.

Imagine when those two meet and there’s an undeniable attraction and even more, a connection!
The sex is explosive and both want more. But more and keeping your heart safe at the same time? A few weeks of fun will have to do, nothing more!
Yes, it’s all far from simple. Even when they decided to be bf, FAR from, and that’s exactly what this story is about!

So worthy to read!!

Their sports are present but in a minor way, it’s all about their relationship. I loved them both so much! There are some side characters who played an important role, I won’t spoil them in what way.
There’s a lot of banter and there’s a LOT of dirty talk. The serious parts? It was amazingly written.
Very convincing and heartfelt! Thank goodness they get their hard-earned HEA

Crossed Sticks, an all-new friends with benefits, M/M, hockey romance and the first book in the Buffalo Warriors Hockey Series.

Harper and Luca, both professional athletes have had difficult and heartbreaking experiences when it came to relationships and searching for love. So much so, niether of them believed they were worthy, good enough or deserving. They believed the awful things that were said to them by former lovers of boy friends.

They each are haunted by their own demons.

A chance encounter brings them together. Both hoping that perhaps they can be friends with benefits, they soon realize that they both want more from each other.

Their journey is not easy. They deal with the highs and lows including significant anxiety and depression. But it is also funny at times and their back and forth banter and their conversations with their friends has light hearted moments. The sex is hot and steamy with lots of role play and dirty talk- my fave!

Luca and Harper are raw, vulnerable and unapologetically true to themselves and each other. They may have had a difficult start but their HEA is so worth it. Their openness and willingness to work through their challenges is relationship goals.

Gabe’s story is next…. with all his mentions and critical role in Luca and Harper’s life, you just knew the authors were laying down the foundation for their next book. Can’t wait!

I received a free ARC of this book and this review is my opinion.

Time of death 53 % when they started "sword fighting" on the beach. What the fuck was this book? I get what the authors wanted but seriously, this was messy, childish and ridiculous. We have two over the top angsty boys that act like teenagers with all their issues, that talk like they are a textbook of psychology. Also the start is constantly them ~worrying~ about what the other might feel even though THEY TALK!!! ABOUT!!! HOW THEY FEEL THE SAME!!!! They are worried about stupid things I just cant buy into and it was so cringey at times I had to put the book away. And good LORD why does everyone constantly need to have such big dicks??? I get you are writing porn but REALLY.

Perhaps it is our imperfections that make us so perfect for one another--Jane Austen, Emma

In this high angst and emotionally charged journey, two professional sports players overcome their past relationship challenges and traumas in the hopes of having a happily ever after.
-Woulda, coulda, shoulda never solved anything.-

I received this ARC, un-proofed edition, in exchange for an honest review before it drops on October 2, 2024 on Amazon and Kindle Unlimited.

Crossed Sticks, a duel POV sports romance, is an off-shoot that takes place in an existing universe that the author’s created for another series called Bethesda Barracudas Hockey Series.

When Harper, a muscular cherub face hockey player, is traded to the Buffalo Warriors team, he remains in contact with his former teammates. When out on the town for welcome drinks with his new team, he Meet/Cutes with Greek god and beefy Luca, a Lacrosse player, in the bathroom. The starring contest is all the foreshadowing we need for the this light kink, dirty talking couple. Their flirty and humorous banter in the beginning was fun and set the stage of what their future COULD be.
-"Let's meet in the light of day and see if it happens again.”-

The medium pacing was smooth with the occasional small time hop to keep us moving in the emotional trajectory of their companionship that they both thrive for. Almost all of the plot takes place during the sport teams off season, so for a ‘sports themed romance’, there was little rink time, which in my opinion hindered the plot. The end of the 2nd Act and almost all of the 3rd really irritated me to no end while also triggering my own depression.

A round of applause to the author’s for being fearless in writing authentic mental health representation! I was going to give this 3 Stars because the plot was so character heavy with little going on but their baggage, however they wrote Luca's struggles tragically beautiful. They didn’t shy away from the darkness and showed all the shadows the mind can create with the help of being pushed over the edge by past and current experiences and gaslighting.
-Harsh words and betrayals don’t fade away. They transform, taunting you from the shadows with constant whispers that you aren’t good enough.-

All the while, Harp is dealing with his own insecurities with his wants, urges, and demons of the past that make him constantly feel unwanted and undeserved. He just wants to feel a spark of hope that he can finally have what he has always craved.
-"….the truth about what he has on his mind can’t be worse than the parade of horribles.”-

The spice was verbally filthy and a smacking good time, which I wasn’t expecting. 4/5🌶! Dom play can go to far really quick, but they kept the new experiences over the right side of the line. I went into this blind, having not read the cover description. I like to be surprised by a tool that was molded from Thor's hammer.
-I wasn’t looking for Mr. Forever, but finding a man who could be more then Mr. Tonight would be terrific.-

Lastly, many ensemble characters were introduced for future additions to the series. I’m excited to get to know them more as the world unfolds. Book 2 is already announced but I won’t give it away here. And if you are new to this universe without reading the Barracuda series (like me), don’t sweat. Nothing major was given away other than couples names.

Happy Reading!

An emotional start to a new series from Ryan Taylor and Josh Hardwood.
Harper is new to Buffalo having been traded to the Warriors hockey team and on his first night literally runs into Luca. There is an instant spark of attraction and, after a couple of missed moments, they're able to meet up and have quite the memorable encounter. What it turns into is something neither is prepared for, having both experienced heartbreak of varying degrees in the past.
I was surprised by the depth of the mental health struggles written but think it is quite well written. Communication is definitely something that both men need to work on to have a successful future, they definitely have no problems when it comes to attraction and what they can give to each other. Luca is the first person to ever see the submissive side that Harper has and has no problem in taking the lead there. Their struggles come from what they've experienced in the past affecting their thought processes and feelings in the present.
Harper's old and new teammates show themselves in the best light, being welcoming/supportive throughout the story. We don't get to meet anyone really on Luca's side. There is Caleb, his best friend, but that's where some of his troubles lie.
Another very good sports romance from this writing duo and I'm looking forward to getting to know more players on the Warrior's team.
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

Arc review

Well what can I say?
Ryan and Josh have done it yet again, but this time better than ever. I absolutely adored it. This book has had me smiling, crying and shouting, but in the end it is just perfect.

Harper Blanton has recently been traded from the Bethesda Barracudas, and now plays for the Buffalo Warriors Ice Hockey Team. Leaving all his friends behind, he needs to make new friends with his teammates, who make him feel very welcome.
Harper thinks he is incapable of love as all his previous boyfriends have left him. All he wants is a lasting relationship with someone who can see past the hockey player.

Luca Moretti plays Lacrosse for the Buffalo Steamrollers. He meets Harper and is instantly attracted to him, and he wants him. Luca does not know who Harper is initially. We have met Luca before when he was the best friends of Caleb (My Perfect Screwup, and another fabulous book by these authors).
Caleb and Luca are still best friends but the relationship is rocky and needs sorting out.

Harper and Luca start a new relationship and are happy on the surface, but they both have issues that need working through, before they get their perfect HEA.

This book features some mental health issues (please see the trigger warnings).
It also has the perfect balance of angst, steam and banter.

Ryan Taylor and Joshua Harwood are incredible authors and have such a knack of sucking you into a book, that you're almost living it. This book is no exception. The characetrs have depth and warmth to them and are described perfecly.
It was also lovely to read about characters from their other books, bringing three of their series together.
There are not enough stars to give this book. 5⭐️all day every day.
You simply must read this.

“Harper really did scare me but I liked him enough to face my fears”.

I absolutely hated Caleb. He’s an awful person and an even worse friend. The way things with him was handled at the end of the story was infuriating. He constantly did things that no sane person would ever do to someone they care about, let alone someone who is supposed to be their best friend. I kept waiting—*hoping*—that Luca would finally grow a backbone and cut Caleb off for good, but that moment never came. Instead, Luca, the spineless pushover, even confesses his love for Harper to Caleb first! What kind of nonsense is that?

Caleb’s selfish behavior almost ruins their young love and nearly destroys Luca in the process. Yet, Luca still forgives him? Why? And why is Caleb’s behavior justified throughout the story? Now I know. Turns out Caleb and his boyfriend are the main characters in another one of the author’s stories, which I will never, *ever* waste my time on. I just feel sorry that I wasted so much time on this one.

This was a great book! I’d give it a 4.5/5 rating, and only because I felt there were a lot of side characters that made it confusing for me. This is the first book I’ve read by this author and I loved it!!! I think if I knew characters from another series were in it, I would have read those first before skipping ahead to this new series. And I felt like some of those side characters from another series had stories I didn’t understand because I hadn’t read them. I wasn’t able to get the full picture. Luca and Harper however, I absolutely adored!! The spice in this book was 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ so good!! I loved the dynamic between the two men, and I also really loved their backgrounds and histories and how that shaped them into a great couple! The fact that depression was brought into this story made me cry for Luca and the pain he endured. It was so real and I’m glad the authors didn’t have just one little blurb about mental health. It was very much a part of the character and made the ending so much more worth it!! I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would love to continue on with the universe to read Gabe’s story next! I will have to go back and read other books from these authors though, as I’d love more info about the side characters mentioned in this story!

Harper and Luca had such a difficult but wonderful journey. This was a low angst but important story. Lessons learned and discussions had, showed the way love can survive and thrive.
A beautiful sexy and romantic book.

Oh man, this book is gonna tear your heart out and put it right back together again!

You should probably also know, it’s GONNA make you laugh and cry—heck, it may even make you laugh UNTIL you cry but either way, you’re not gonna regret one. Single. Word. I definitely didn’t and I already can’t wait for Gabe’s book!

Harper and Luca were so sweet! They didn’t always have it easy but they never gave up, were always there for each other and SO dang hot that I wasn’t ready for it to end. Christmas is coming soon, who knows, maybe J&R will take pity on us and write a little Harper and Luca short to tide us over while we wait for Gabe’s story. Please?

This was such a deliciously sweet book, one readers aren’t gonna want to miss, it’s a 5 Star read for sure!!

I received a copy of this book for free but am voluntarily leaving a review.

I absolutely love Harper and Luca.

This entire book was phenomenal. The author duo has once again knocked it out of the park.

Ryan Taylor and Joshua Harwood are definitely no strangers when it comes to tackling sensitive issues such as mental health representation which this book definitely has. And they do not sugar coat it either.

I am super excited that this book is also kicking off a brand new series of hockey books which are written to be stand-alones.

I highly recommend this book and make sure you have tissues as well because you are going to need them as this book has all the feels.

Emotional Rollercoaster…

I loved Luca and Harper from the start! These two broken men just needed each other to pick up the pieces and heal.

Remembering Luca’s character from My Perfect Screwup and seeing how he’s struggled since he got his heart broken was heart wrenching to read. I liked that the authors included a mental health storyline because there is so much stigma involved. It’s still an off limits topic for many.

Harper and Luca were so hot and steamy! I think this was the spiciest book by Ryan and Josh. I can’t wait for the next book!

"Crossed Sticks" by Ryan Taylor and Joshua Harwood is an exhilarating sports romance that will keep you on the edge of your seat. In this first book of the Buffalo Warriors Hockey series, we meet Luca, a talented lacrosse player for the Steamrollers, and Harper, a skilled hockey player traded to the Buffalo Ice Hockey Team from the Bethesda Barracudas. Both have had their fair share of failed relationships and are sceptical about finding love again.

As the story unfolds, we delve into their insecurities and past demons, adding a layer of depth and relatability to the characters. Harper battles with his insecurities, while Luca struggles with underlying anxiety. The raw emotions and relatable struggles make the story feel incredibly real.

The authors skillfully weave in themes of mental health and depression, offering a poignant and authentic representation. The dual point of view adds an extra layer of depth to the narrative, allowing readers to connect with both characters on a deeper level.

With plenty of angst, steamy moments, and a touch of humour, "Crossed Sticks" is a compelling sports romance that will keep you hooked from start to finish. If you're looking for a story that combines sizzling romance, authentic emotions, and a hint of kink, this book has it all!

4.5 stars

I loved this book for many reasons. First, it’s a hockey romance. I love a good hockey romance. But it is not just hockey. There is also lacrosse. I thought the fact that Luca was a professional lacrosse player was such a great addition to the story because lacrosse is a sport that you almost never see in sports romances. I thought it was so great to feature such a different sport. I also thought it was a great contrast with hockey. Professional lacrosse is not like a lot of professional sports because it just isn’t as popular. So it made it so that Harper was at a different level of professional athlete. This was such a hot, spicy, romance. I also love talking about hockey butt because it totally is a thing. 😉

I have read a few M/M romances and I thought this one was so well done. Reading the relationship between Harper and Luca, it seemed like these were two guys that could totally be real. And the chemistry between the two guys was spectacular. I loved reading how they talked to each other and were able to explore things they enjoyed with each other. They were able to work through their insecurities and deal with their pasts. Both men were completely shaped by their experiences, but they were so good together.

Outside of the M/M romance, outside of the sports aspect, one of the best things about this book was its representation of mental health issues. The talks of depression and self doubt was something you don’t see all that often. By having the sexy, Greek god lacrosse player suffer from what at times is fairly severe depression, it showed that mental health issues are something that anyone can live with. Just the representation and the discussions bring awareness to something that so many people live with, especially in the queer community.

I thought this was a very well-done M/M sports romance. The chemistry between the two MMCs was off the charts and the discussion of topics such as depression and anxiety gives a voice to people living with those. The authors did a wonderful job of writing a spicy, entertaining story that kept me wanting to read more. This was the first book I had read by these authors, but it won’t be the last

Luca Luca Luca., I wondered if we were going to get your story. To be fair, I wasn’t sure about reading it. After My Perfect Screw Up I wasn’t sure. I was wrong, your story deserved to be told & I am lucky I got to experience it.

Luca is someone who loves so big. He loves with all of his heart, I don’t know if he can feel halfway. He either feels it all or he feels nothing. He’s been broken by his best friend Daniel. He hasn’t gotten over the hurt, it still wounds him & affects a lot of choices. He doesn’t do relationships. He doesn’t want to risk his heart. He guards it like a goalie would. It’s impenetrable. The only problem is when he runs into Harper at a bar, it’s inevitable. The ball has crossed through the goal & it is up to him how he chooses to continue. Pretend like it never happened or let go.

Harper doesn’t believe he is worthy. Of love, of time, or being anyone’s first choice. He believes he is the right now guy, the only a good time guy & no ones forever. He’s recently been traded to the Buffalo Warriors in the hopes it will garner him more playing time. Being on the Bethesda Barracudas was also proof he wasn’t a keeper. He was 4th in line to greatness. It wasn’t enough. When Buffalo reached out he took a chance to define his own path to try to be something more.

These two experienced so many of the same emotions, but they are so lost in their own fears & anxieties they couldn’t see it in the other. All they saw was someone they were willing to risk their hearts for, within limits.

This is one of the most angst filled books I’ve read by these authors. They always come up with the best meet cutes for their characters and this is no exception.

After binging my way through all of Ryan and Josh’s books this summer, I was so excited for more, especially a hockey romance which is one of my favorite genres. And let me tell you, they did not disappoint! I’ve already read my advanced copy of “Crossed Sticks” twice and loved it both times.

Harper (a pro hockey player recently traded to Buffalo) and Luca (a pro lacrosse player/model) really weren’t looking for anything serious thanks to prior heartbreaks, but somehow it happened to them anyway. They are the sweetest men around with such a beautiful relationship and it was wonderful to watch it grow on the pages alongside the steamy scenes. Mental health concerns were addressed in an appropriate manner though may be triggering for some.

While this can be read as a stand alone, I felt like reading their prior Bethesda Barracudas series and Mohegan U hockey provided a great back story for Harper and his hockey friends and “My Perfect Screwup” really set the stage for Luca and the issues that impacted his and Harper’s relationship throughout the book.

5 stars for sure and I’m counting down the months until the next book in this series (Net Bet) is ready, featuring Gabe, one of Harper’s hockey teammates.

A story of trust. Two men both with experience of broken hearts find one another and they turn out to more compatible than they hoped. There is a kink dynamic in this story. However, when you have lost faith and trust before, it is harder for your heart to forget. You see things you want to see, and rationality goes out the window. There is hurting and more talking to get back on track. Never have I disliked a side character as much as Caleb. Seeing things from Luca's perspective made you feel so sad for him, even though he acted out when Caleb met Daniel. There is a lot of arguing, which I often find difficult, but this is what they needed to air it all out in the open. They have a lot to work through, but they now both know how each other really feels which gives them some inner peace. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I haven't read a ton of books from these authors yet, but the ones I have read I've really enjoyed and this was no exception. Luca and Harper are both so broken, but even when they were just friends with benefits, the care and respect they showed for each other was awesome. There's plenty of misunderstandings and miscommunications, but they learn from their mistakes in order to move forward with their relationship. The sports aspect of the story really took a backseat, and we really didn't get any lacrosse. But there's tons of heat paired with a little bit of kink plus I loved the mental health rep.

Overall, a high angst, high heat story with a hard earned HEA. I'm looking forward to Gabe's book in January, and I'm going to have to go back and read that the Cudas' stories now!

I received an ARC of this book from Literally Yours PR, and this is my honest opinion.

Welp, Ryan & Josh have done it again. The emotional rollercoaster I just went through had me crying and smiling, this book is so full of heart & heat. These writers definitely know how to bring their characters to life and make you feel like you are getting to know them. I was for sure experiencing all of what Harper & Luca were going through. Harper and Luca are such sweethearts and they were stuck in their heads for sure, but in the end they found their way. You can always count on Ryan & Josh to build you up, break you down (all with good intentions) and build you back up with an amazing HEA. They will forever be my favorite m/m romance authors for the worlds they create and bring to life. ❤️❤️❤️

Harper is new to town, freshly traded and wants nothing but to dedicate his life to his work, working out and his friends. Until he runs into Luca.

Okay I have to label this one of the cutest meets ever. The accidental bumping into each other that leads to being sucked into each other’s eyes, where every second last a lifetime? Yes please, I want more of it!

They are adorable and they flow so well together. An easy and instant friendship with some sizzling attraction on the side. Both of them know they want easy, casual but it’s never really that.

It was so cute that they both hid their profession for fear of the other’s reaction and bad past experiences only to find out they are similar in that as well.

Such an amazing read, good vibes, a little angst and some issues to resolve to get to their worthy HEA. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series.

ARC Review

Loved everything from the plot to the main characters. The banter between the MCs were on par.

The MCs give Jake & Caleb vibes from Pucking Around.

My favorite scene is this one.
“That’s a nice stick you’ve got there, dude.”

“Oh dude, it’s way more than a stick. It’s a fucking sword.”

We went into fencing mode, twisting our hips and trying our best to gain the advantage. We were both longer than average, but since long for a dick is still pretty short for a sword, we could only leverage what we had. We laughed as we fought, looking into each other’s eyes and then back at the action. While we played, fire ignited inside me, making my dick harder than ever.

I really wanted to love this story. I enjoy the books these authors write together, but this one just didn’t resonate well with me.

I honestly didn’t like Luca. He got on my last nerve and decided to pluck it the entire book. I didn’t find him sympathetic, because he never took steps to maintain his mental health after his first major bout of depression. Everything about him felt fake because it was. Even near the end, it all felt forced.

Harper was better, but even he didn’t sit right with me. His extreme reactions while understandable, painted him as heartless and blind to anything other than himself. Again understandable, but I didn’t care for it when paired with the character that is Luca.

This book was a miss for me, but it is technically well written and the pacing was good, so that is why it gets the three stars.

Hopefully the next book in the series will resonate better with me. I won’t like every story, but you might like this one better than I did.

I was not expecting the emotional rollercoaster! This book was fantastic!

It’s pretty heavy on what it deals with. The angst is high as well. The story had me hooked! We start off with some insta-lust, which I love!

Luca and Harper are just amazing. The mental health rep was amazing. The insecurities were so relatable. The growth from the characters was just amazing.

I loved this book so much! If you want an emotional and spicy mm romance…pick this one up!

My, this is a hot one! Both Harper and Luca are professional athletes and think they only want friends with bennies but secretly they want it all. They steam up the pages trying to get all they can from the other while love sneaks into their actions. It's loaded with dirty talk, a need to dominate and be dominated and a destigmatization of mental health issues. A great start to a new series by Ryan and Joshua and it's a keeper. I received a copy of this book and this is my voluntary opinion.

WOW! WHAT AN EMOTIONAL ROLLERCOASTER FOR BOTH LUCA AND HARPER. I WAS LAUGHING AND HAPPY AT ONE POINT AND THEN CRYING FOR BOTH MC'S. I'd never listened to an audio book before and listening made the book more real with emotion. What a fantastic book

Great story of Luca and Harper. Gave all the emotional thrills you need in a book. Luca is from My Perfect Screw-up and Broken Ice, Mended Hearts. Loved how you can pick up this read but some background reading might be in order. Thank you Ryan and Joshua for this book - a fantastic read. 5 stars doesn't do it justice.
