A police transcriber-turned-novelist returns to Black Harbor to help solve the case of her ex-husband’s murder in the newest riveting Black Harbor mystery by acclaimed author Hannah Morrissey.

Black Harbor is a tinderbox. Temperatures and violent crime have both risen to all-time highs, a new drug razes the city, and the scene to which Sergeant Nikolai Kole responds is anything but a rote homicide. In the back of a clubhouse lies a body wrapped in garbage bags and doused in bleach.

It isn’t just any body. Tommy Greenlee, the ex-husband of Kole’s former lover, Hazel, has been shot several times and left for dead. What’s more…the killer left what appears to be a calling card.

Elsewhere, Hazel is haunted by her memories of Black Harbor. Lured there after eight years, she returns to find out who killed Tommy and why. Now back in Kole’s orbit, their love affair can hardly pick up where it left off. They both used each other to their own ends before, which begs the question: would they do it again?

With the atmosphere growing more volatile by the second, Hazel and Kole call a truce, and as they work together to solve this murder, they will not only unearth Black Harbor’s deepest, darkest secrets—they’ll each have to face their own.

Say hello again to transcriber Hazel Greenlee, lured in The Unlucky Ones back to Black Harbor to help solve her ex-husband’s brutal murder, but the people there are as dark and twisted as she remembers. Morrissey’s talents take center stage here: moody, razor-sharp prose; a scrupulously plotted chain of escalating events; and a cast of damaged characters so real they leap off the page. Black Harbor is a cruel and miserable place, but I’ll follow Hannah Morrissey there anytime.

black harbor novel #4

Hazel and Kole are baaaack 🔥
If you haven’t read the Black Harbor series yet, what are you waiting for??
Definitely give the first three books a read before this one releases in March!
The first three books can be read as standalone but this one cannot, as it brings back the two MCs from Hello, Transcriber (book 1) and a LOT has unfolded since then.

Hazel returns to Black Harbor after a murder of someone she used to be close with. And Kole is working the case. They haven’t seen each other in almost a decade.

I love this series so much and book four was the perfect addition to it! If you need a new thriller series with an overall dark tone, definitely pick this one up 🖤

4.5⭐️

Thanks so much to the author, @minotaur_books + @netgalley for my ARC!

Like Hazel returns to Forge Bridge, so we return once again to Black Harbor. But this time, instead of the city freezing to death, the temperature rises and so does the body count.

Black Harbor is more of a living, breathing character in this story than it has been in the others (which I didn't even think was possible). It's in all of the characters just as much as the characters are in it. It's true what they say, you can take the girl out of the city, but you can't take the city out of the girl.

Nik and Hazel find themselves ensnared in the middle of a series of murders and every time they pull on a thread, they find just as many new questions as they do answers. There's a difference in Hazel though, she's ready for Black Harbor and throughout the story her growth is tied to the bridge.

This is the perfect, bittersweet farewell to a city I will inevitably be pulled back to revisit. The only way out of Black Harbor is down, but putting down these books is only temporary. We're all drawn back to Hannah's immersive world-building and the character's in Black Harbor who stole our hearts.

THIS BOOK WAS EVERYTHING. This was everything I wanted and needed. I could not hold back starting this book so many months before release when I saw that THE TRANSCRIBER RETURNS TO BLACK HARBOR.

I have no chill about this book, none at all. It was perfect. Buy it, read it, obsess with me.

Seeing all the major characters from the previous BH books was a reunion I didn't know I needed. The references to past cases, the bonds between the characters, the unspoken and unfinished business. YES. Okay yes the story was bleak and awful and kept unraveling to reveal the deepest darkest secrets, which is what made it amazing. The pacing was perfect, the back and forth between Hazel (her past, her motivation, her determination to be strong and savy) and Kole (broken and determined, caught between so many different webs of secrets and crimes). No spoilers but it was shocking in the best ways and ensnares the reader right away.

I NEED MORE OF BLACK HARBOR PLEASSSSSSE. Who do I bribe to make this happen?!

Thanks to the publisher for a free ARC; my thoughts and review are my own.

This is the fourth installment in the Black Harbor series, which brings Nik and Hazel back to the forefront, their worlds colliding together once again. I love me some Nik and Hazel together, but Black Harbor is bleak. You just feel it right to your very bones. It's the kind of place you want to drive wide circles around lest you get pulled into the grit and crime. I am amazed that anyone would even consider living there. This time around, Hazel's ex-husband is found dead, which pulls her back into the dark orbit of this seemingly soul-less town as she and Nik work to uncover whodunnit, why, and fight to come out the other side hopefully whole.

Return to Black Harbor, where the buildings are grim and needles line every street. Hazel left the town behind eight years ago to start over. When her ex-husband, Tommy is found murder at the Mineshaft, a popular hang out for the lowlifes of Black Harbor, Hazel will be drawn back into the bleak world.

Sergeant Kole is leading the Violent Crimes Task Force to not only solve Tommy's murder but also to get a handle on the new street drug, Xombie. A key drug king is behind bars, so they now must learn who owns the streets. In a city brimming with horrors, what will happen when Hazel comes back into Kole's orbit? Kole thought they had something special until she left. Now it's a race to solve Tommy's murder before Hazel's life ends up on the chopping block. Eight years gone, Hazel thinks it's safe, what she doesn't remember is nothing is safe in Black Harbor.

Hannah Morrissey does dark, gritty crime so well. She takes this miserable setting riddled with drugs, gangs, and terrors and makes it its own character. Black Harbor comes to life. The return of Hazel and Nikolai Kole, as well as some other familiar faces make it feel more connected to the other books. They've all grown right alongside Hannah in the Black Harbor books. I am excited to see where this goes next. Thank you so much Netgalley and St. Martin Press for the advanced copy of this book. I'm absolutely in a Midwestern noir love.

I thoroughly enjoyed the mystery in this book! It kept me on my toes with so many questions arising throughout the story. The suspense was palpable, and I found myself eager to piece together the clues alongside the characters.

The characters were well-developed and engaging, each bringing their own unique perspective to the investigation. I became invested in their journeys and the relationships that unfolded as they worked to solve the case.

Resolving the murder of a young victim was an intricate puzzle, and the way the author unfolded the clues was both clever and satisfying. Overall, this was a fantastic read that combined suspense and great character work perfectly. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves a good mystery!

The Unlucky Ones

MC Nik police detective and FMC Hazel was a transcriber both characters are from Hello, Transcriber. When Hazel’s ex-husband is murdered she shows up to try to figure out why and to retrieve a personal belonging hidden in his house. I won’t give any spoilers but when they see each other old feelings begin to surface.

This has a serial killer vibe with twists all over Black Harbor Michigan. The detectives ask Hazel to assist them in their research since they fear the killer could be after her and Nik feels the need to protect her.

This is a great thriller that keeps you guessing. If you’re a fan of Charlie Donlea you will love this as I did.

Hello Transcriber was my least favorite of the Black Harbor books, it was fine but Books 2 and 3 were excellent. This one is pretty good too -- it T takes you back to Hazel and Kole from the first book, pulls in some of the threads from books 2 and 3 and really continues to build up the character of Black Harbor as well. Definitely not a place I'd like to live!

Hannah Morrissey’s “The Unlucky Ones” is a masterful addition to the wonderful Black Harbor series, each entry to this series left me wanting more!

This novel is a testament to Morrissey’s talent for crafting intricate plots and deeply flawed, yet compelling characters.

Set in the hauntingly vivid town of Black Harbor, the story follows Detective Hazel Greenlee as she navigates a labyrinth of secrets and lies to solve a chilling murder case. The victim, a local artist with a troubled past, is found dead under mysterious circumstances, and Hazel must untangle a web of deceit that implicates some of the town’s most prominent figures.

Morrissey’s writing is evocative and immersive, painting a dark and moody picture of Black Harbor that feels almost like a character in its own right. The town’s eerie atmosphere and the palpable tension add layers of suspense that keep readers hooked. The pacing is expertly managed, with twists and turns that are both surprising and satisfying.

One of the standout features of “The Unlucky Ones” is its character development. Hazel Greenlee is a complex and relatable protagonist, struggling with her own demons while determined to uncover the truth. Her interactions with other characters, including her enigmatic partner and the various suspects, are rich with tension and nuance. Morrissey excels at creating multi-dimensional characters whose motivations and actions are believable and compelling.

The novel also delves into themes of guilt, redemption, and the impact of past traumas, adding emotional depth to the thrilling plot. Morrissey’s exploration of these themes is thoughtful and poignant, making “The Unlucky Ones” MUCH more than an average crime thriller.

For those who enjoy audiobooks, the narration of “The Unlucky Ones” is exceptional, bringing the characters and the eerie setting of Black Harbor to life. The narrator’s performance enhances the suspense and emotional intensity of the story, making it an immersive experience.

“The Unlucky Ones” showcases Hannah Morrissey’s skill in weaving together a compelling narrative with rich character development and a hauntingly atmospheric setting.

This novel is a must-read for fans of the genre and anyone looking for a story that is both thrilling and deeply human. Five stars for a brilliantly crafted and unforgettable read.

It seems like forever since I read The Transcriber, (it was well worth the wait!) and I can’t overemphasize how ecstatic I was for Hazel to be back in Black Harbor. Not that I want to visit there anytime soon with the miserable weather and a community losing the war in drugs. The author sets the stage with a gritty location and a plot you can’t wait to unravel. Hazel ran to NY years ago, leaving a controlling, abusive husband in her past. Now he’s dead and her need to know why clouds her judgement. She made her own mistakes when she sought solace with Sergeant Nikolai Kole, so she left. Hazel pursued her writing career and penned a successful novel loosely based on Black Harbor. Her return will dredge up everything she’s put in the past. Not everyone is happy about her coming back now. Kole is just another damaged soul trying to keep his small place in the world safe. He’s never dealt with the loss of his brother. He’s fighting an ever growing battle with gangs, criminals and deadly drugs. He has a good team of Investigators but it’s small compared to the network of drugs infiltrating Black Harbor. He’s bitter about how Hazel so abruptly ran away. Now they’ll come face to face over a murder. Can they find their way back to trusting each other? Or will Hazel become another statistic being nosy and disregarding the dangerous forces behind the chaos. I’ve read all of the series but you could read as a standalone. I hope the author has much more in store for Hazel and Kole in the future.

Hannah Morrissey does it again! Not only does she bring the dark and gritty Black Harbor, but also the star-crossed lovers Hazel and Kole back to life in her fourth Black Harbor (BH) novel, "The Unlucky Ones". She continues their story a couple of years down the line after Hazel's ex-husband is found murdered.

One of my favorite things that Morrissey does is create a scene so vivid that it feels that you as the reader are a part of the story (which is terrifying because Black Harbor is not somewhere you want to be!), she uses very colorful figurative language that helps set the mood which can be comical at times and highly serious at others. I feel in terms of detailed graphic content this one is comparable to the third BH novel, "When I'm Dead", so readers be warned. However, that is to be expected when reading a Black Harbor novel as it does dive into this dark city that is honestly comparable to Gotham City. Morrissey does a really good job of creating her subgenre, which she titles, Midwestern Noir, with this book just another example of this.

I felt that reading the first three novels is not 100% necessary because Morrissey is good at adding quick little "peek-a-boo" summaries/characters from past BH stories. However, if you want to truly understand the angst of the relationship between our two main characters then the first novel is A MUST. The story did not feel predictable at all, I made multiple guesses throughout and oftentimes was proved wrong!! This story was full of a lot of plot twists, but it was more reminiscent of the first BH novel, "Hello Transcriber" as it is a thriller with romance mixed in.

The transcriber has returned to Black Harbor. Hazel was one of the rare people who managed to leave Black Harbor. However, her departure was not as secure as she hoped, as Black Harbor remains in her and will eventually draw her back. Ostensibly, her return to Black Harbor is to figure out who killed her rat-bastard of an ex-husband and why, as a way to bring closure to herself. Or is it to see Kole again, with whom closure would have a very different meaning. Or does Black Harbor have another reason for bringing Hazel back?

The brutal death of Tommy Greenlee (Hazel's ex), followed soon after by the death of his best friend, Cameron, in an equally brutal fashion, will require Kole and his colleagues to delve even deeper into the dark underworld of Black Harbor, in part to curb distribution of the latest and deadliest designer street drug (Xombie) and to recover the sizeable collection of weapons stolen from Tommy. But also, to try to identify Buddha, who has taken over the drug trade since the incarceration of Hades. Doing so will require unravelling a decade's old mystery and will give Kole answers to a question that has long plagued him. There is plenty of suspense and surprises.

Review of Uncorrected Digital Galley

Tommy Greenlee is dead. Brutally murdered.

Could Tommy’s ex-wife, Hazel, be responsible? Sergeant Nikolai Kole, investigating the crime, thinks not. But, maybe . . . .

Who is responsible for Tommy’s murder? And why? Did it have to do with the rampant drug trade? Or perhaps something even more sinister . . . .

=========

Fourth in the Black Harbor series, the book has enough backstory to satisfy readers new to the series. As with earlier books, Kole and Hazel are the main characters; both are compelling, both are fighting personal demons. It’s been almost a decade since Hazel left Black Harbor; her return is difficult.

The unfolding story is both chilling and bleak. Danger lurks on every page. A dark and foreboding tone underlies the telling of this tale; this creepiness is likely to cause readers to feel unsettled as the unfolding story slowly shares its secrets. The pace is brisk; the intrigue palpable.

The only downside here is the unnecessary inclusion of a particularly offensive expletive that adds nothing to the story and is likely to offend many readers; it lowers the rating for this book.

Once again, Hannah Morrissey drops us into the gritty, drug-infested pit that is Black Harbor, where almost no one gets out alive.
We thought Hazel Greenlee had made it out, alive and well in New York. But then her ex, Tommy is murdered, and after seeing the news, Hazel is drawn back to Black Harbor to find out who killed him, and like a moth to a flame, drawn back to her former lover, Sergeant Nikolai Kole.
Will they be able decipher the hierarchy of the murderers and drug lords and still manage to keep themselves alive?
This series has been fast-paced, atmospheric, and well written. Morrissey's characters are relatable, in their emotions, if not their actions. The line between the good guys and the bad guys is a hazy, shifting thing, and the city itself is a plague that gets into people's minds.
Every story that comes out of Black Harbor is darker and more complex than the previous one. I hope this will not be the last.

So happy to see Hazel and Kole reunite in this 4th installment of the Black Harbor series! Hazel was the Transcriber from the 1st book and has finally made a comeback to investigate the death of her ex-husband. This book was a really good crime mystery set in a town that just bleeds darkness. The atmosphere of Black Harbor gives me the chills...especially the railroad bridge where many go to plunge to their deaths. The author did a wonderful job as always displaying this creepy setting. The story was enjoyable, fast-paced, and well written. I love the deep, almost painful connection that Hazel and Kole share. I'm going to keep my fingers crossed that Hazel will be present in future books. I really enjoyed this one and I would definitely recommend but start from the beginning of the series so that you don't feel lost.

Hazel shows back up in her hometown, Black Harbor to help solve the brutal murder of her ex-husband. However, the people haven't changed as Hazel remembers they're still dark and twisted. Returning to Back Harbor for Hazel also means seeing Kole who will be leading the task force, who she hasn't seen since she left years prior and happens to be her former lover. As Kole, Hazel and his team make their way trying to solve this murder more bodies are showing up dead, they find just as many new questions as they do answers. Will Kole and Hazel be able to work together to solve these murders or will their feeling re-surface? These murders seem to be connected to the Forge Bridge but what is the connection?!?

Hannah Morrissey does a great job with her writing, and making you feel like you're there with the characters, walking with them, in the car at the crime scene. She really sets the scene.

This is the 4th book in the Black Harbor series

The unlucky ones by Hannah morrisey

This is the 4th book in a series, to which I did not know however it was an interesting book that follows the life of Hazel Greenlaw who is a transcriber whose husband was brutally murdered in a town called black harbor.

Nik Kole is working the case and has an obvious connection to Hazel. However the big draw for me here was the town itself that has something called a railroad bridge that people go to, to plunge to their deaths. This book was interesting and just fell a little short in the intrigue I was hoping for.

I enjoyed it and will look for more books from this author.

thanks to netgalley for early access to this book.

the black harbor series has got to be the bleakest series i've ever read, although that's not to say i don't like it. who doesn't enjoy wallowing in utter squalor sometimes?

the author's writing is evocative without sacrificing the pacing too much although, of all the books in the series, this one does read a bit slower. perhaps it's due to the fact that it revisits the 2 main characters from the first book in the series which i also felt was a bit slow.

Gimme gimme more! I love Hazel & Kole.

It’s so thrilling and I could not put it down!

This is the 4th book in the Black Harbor series. I think my favorite will always be the first one. I loved meeting Hazel for the first time and I just love how she thinks. I was so excited to read more about her in this one.

Hannah Morrissey writes stories so beautifully and detailed. I feel like I’m there walking with the characters. I’m in the car with them. I’m at the crime scene with them. I see everything.

This was fantastic. I loved catching up with Hazel after so long and learning what happened to her after Hello Transcriber. I feel like her and Kole's story really came full circle and I loved all the easter eggs from The Widowmaker as well as When I'm Dead. I've always pitched these books as Gotham City without Batman and it was really cool to see that be an actual line in the Unlucky Ones.

Can't wait to see what Hannah Morrisey writes next!

My mistake was I didn’t realize this was part of a series. While it was ok to read as a standalone, I think I would have enjoyed it more if I knew the backstory, because it was alluded to quite a bit. But two people who clearly have a history are thrown back together after a murder. They both are motivated to find answers in their crime-ridden town.

The Unlucky Ones (Black Harbor #4)
By Hannah Morrissey

This is the forth book in a series that has room to keep going although if the series wraps up here I'm very happy with this being the ending. The books are connected in big and little ways but you don't have to read the other books before you read this one since you get enough background information to understand what is going on in the current book. I read/heard all four books, one after another, my favorite way to enjoy a series.

The main character of the first book are featured in this book, too. "What goes 'round, comes 'round" in big ways. The story is full of sayings and they all make sense eventually, sometimes in ways much different that I was expecting when I first heard them. The dregs of Black Harbor are on display in this book and sometimes I had trouble following the story, mostly because I'm not too up on low life speak. The dangers are clear and the work of law enforcement seems impossible. Black Harbor has a ratio of 4/400 when it comes to murder investigators and the crimes, the job is one never ending gutter dive and the worst of the worst are protecting each other, if they aren't killing each other.

Eight years after they last saw each other, Hazel, now an author who wrote about the worst of Black Harbor, is back on Sergeant Nikolai Kole's stomping ground. Her ex-husband has been murdered and an ominous message lures her back to town. But really, Hazel never left Black Harbor and she's back for more than the death of her ex-husband.

What I enjoy about the series is that there is continuity. Life goes on, or life doesn't go on, but for people like Kole, who's heart is determined to stick with his home town and do what he can for it despite all its faults, he wants to be no other place. Once the story made it to the end, I understood what was going on and how the underbelly of this placed works. I may never want to set foot in Black Harbor but it's home to some good people who will do what they can do to save it from itself.
