Reilly I'm glad I won't be working bar for the TalonSix gig, because the band’s frontman, Scar Trex, is trouble. He’s arrogant. Aggressive. Dangerous. I can't understand why groupies swoon over a vocalist who sounds like he’s been possessed by a demon with heartburn.
Then I meet the real him—Trent King—and find out what it's like when he groans my name...
But I won’t let myself get attached. It’s bad enough I had to give up my dreams of being a musician, I won’t become a starstruck groupie left behind as well.
*****
Trent Women crave me as Scar Trex, but none of them care about my actual name, or the truth behind my black eye and bruised knuckles. Which suits me fine. 'Cause when I’m not roaring into the mic, I’m busy trying to forget the past with booze, drugs, and one-night stands. Too busy to want anything more.
Until I meet an unimpressed bartender with fragile hands and a hell of an attitude.
Reilly makes it clear that we're just a fling, but that's not enough. I can’t forget the taste of what she said is mine.
((Author's note: Say It's Mine is a spicy, angsty romance with a wholesome core, but it contains themes which may be triggering for some readers. Please pay attention to the content warning at the beginning of the book.))
Unfortunately, these characters didn't resonate with me. Early twenties, TONS of smoking joints, drinking beers, hanging out with groupies. I mean, I get it, but all that just wasn't for me. I thought a lot of the dialogue was meh. Along with Reilly's extreme hot and cold attitude to Trent, and the utter lack of communication, this book was kind of frustrating at times.
However, I did appreciate how immersed the story was in the music world. I LOVED the friendships formed over the course of the book. That's not an easy thing to do, especially with so many characters on the page. By the end they're all a little family, and that was cute! Lots of people love this one, so don't like my lackluster review put you off if you're into complicated relationships, smut, and nightlife. :)
Insta love between a rock star and an unassuming girl is a plot that’s been done again and again, which makes it an even bigger achievement that this author wrote a such a full-bodied story that feels fresh and engaging.
The story is largely about the emotional experience of these two particular people, rather than simply the shock and awe value of sex, drugs, and rock and roll (though that’s in there, too!)
The sex scenes were on point. 🔥 [NOTE title of book, which figures into sex scenes *hot*hot*hot* ]
The FMC has a chronic health condition, which is well-depicted with nuance and candor here. A much needed addition of representation in the romance canon.
I also appreciate seeing male characters who are feminist, 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁, and (mostly) emotionally mature.
I finished this book in a day, and def recommend it!
* I would caution to check out trigger warnings prior to jumping in, though. There is a lot of substance use.
Elena Ireland brings the reader a rockstar romance with relatable characters and transports us into their world with wonderful description. I enjoyed getting know the members of the band TalonSix. The side characters are also very well written and claim their own place in this story. This book focuses on Scar Trex, aka Trent King, the lead singer and Reilly, a bartender, who has a voice of her own. These two characters take their time getting on the same page at the same time but when they finally collide it’s spectacular. I honestly wasn’t ready for the book to end. I wanted more and hope to see them again in future books that revolve around the other members of the band.
Elena Ireland…..I hope this makes you beyond happy. Like beyond. 😀
This is a delicious angsty rock star romance that keeps the pages turning. The two main characters keep finding each other in spite of themselves, and when they do it is explosive.
The pacing is great, the spicy scenes hot, and the character development right on point. I love that these characters are nuanced and flawed, and the representation of struggling with early onset arthritis was handled so well for the FMC.
I love the authentic Australian vibe in the dialogue and setting, and the gritty realism of what it is like working in a creative career. If you love Jaine Diamond and Carian Cole you will also love this!
Full disclosure, I read the ARC, but it isn't swaying my review.
I loved this book. Wait, correction: I love this book.
Say It's Mine has so many things I appreciate in a romance novel:
- FMC I want to be friends with - MMC who falls first and is secretly smitten despite being all growly & broody - Realistic, spicy banter - Enough angst to make me squirm, but not cry - Side characters who are well-developed, but don't take over - An MMC who is stunned when he c*mes in his pants
I don't want to spoil it, but there's a scene with a phone and ... ugh. 🌶🌶 I can't. It inspired me to add something new to my spice bucket list. Just read it. Trust me. 💜

THIS BOOK. “Unputdownable” doesn’t begin to do it justice. Everything about this book makes the deep parts of my lizard brain go HNNNNGGG
- Rockstar - Tattoos - That lock of hair that falls over his forehead - Brat-tamer eyebrows - Touch her and 🤜👃 - “Mine” - High angst - High spice - She hurts and he takes care of her 🥹 - Then she defends him against hurts AND HE SAYS THANK YOU - That “just one more chapter” pacing is borderline sadistic
YES YES YES. This book was fun and engaging. The story got better and better as the book went on!
The characters also evolved in a wonderful way too!! I absolutely LOVED the writing in this. It made it so easy and fun to read and I can’t even get into how in depth the story line was without spoilers!!
HIGHLY recommend this book!
I received an ARC copy of this ebook. ALL opinions are my own!!
Don't read this book before bedtime. You will feel grouchy in the morning, running on three hours of sleep and wishing the coffee maker would brew faster. It was worth the lack of sleep and lying to myself one more page. The story, the characters... I don't want to give away too much away, but I found a new favorite author.
For a rock book which I’m not a big fan of normally it was better than most. Pretty realistic to what that situation would be like in real life. I like that they had drama without angst. The steam was medium nothing too wild.
This book sets a new standard for the usually overused ‘rockstar’ trope! Fun to read, with interesting characters and medium spice!! I would definitely recommend!
I think this is the year of the rockstar romance for me. I’ve surprisingly read more than I have in the past few years. So far I’ve read 8 in 2024, including Say It’s Mine by @elena.c.ireland . This books was just ANGST. So much angst it was just *chef’s kiss* I loved all of it because of the dynamic between not only the love interests but the side characters. I feel like Reilly and Trents relationship was really realistic. Because emotional constipation is real and boy howdy they sure had it. I love a he falls first/is obsessed with MMC and Trent surely was that. The visceral attraction they have to each other was just amazing cherry on top of the angst and idiots to lovers sundae. I’m really looking forward to what else this author puts out.
