Latkes and goody things all over town, it's Honeyky Hanukkah time!
In Woody Guthrie's rowdy, funny celebration of Hanukkah, a young boy and his dog move merrily from house to house, gathering up family and friends for a big feast. With an accompanying CD, featuring Guthrie's song recorded by the Klezmatics, this is a Hanukkah book you can dance to!
"Sure to become a tradition at Hanukkah parties everywhere." -- Kirkus Reviews

Woodrow Wilson "Woody" Guthrie was an American songwriter and folk musician. Guthrie's musical legacy consists of hundreds of songs, ballads and improvised works covering topics from political themes to traditional songs to children's songs. Guthrie performed continually throughout his life with his guitar frequently displaying the slogan "This Machine Kills Fascists". Guthrie is perhaps best known for his song "This Land Is Your Land" which is regularly sung in American schools. Many of his recorded songs are archived in the Library of Congress.
Guthrie traveled with migrant workers from Oklahoma to California and learned traditional folk and blues songs. His songs are about his experiences in the Dust Bowl era during the Great Depression and are known as the "Dust Bowl Troubadour." Guthrie was associated with, but never a member of, Communist groups in the United States throughout his life.
Guthrie was married three times and fathered eight children, including American folk musician Arlo Guthrie. He is the grandfather of musician Sarah Lee Guthrie. Guthrie died from complications of the degenerative neurologic affliction known as Huntington's Disease. In spite of his illness, during his later years Guthrie served as a figurehead in the folk movement providing inspiration to a generation of new folk musicians, including mentor relationships with Ramblin' Jack Elliott and Bob Dylan.
Someone who knew of my interest in Woody Guthrie and the "Dust Bowl Era" (circa 1930s) gifted our family with this illustrated song book.
This short book is nicely illustrated by David Horowitz so it will appeal to a younger audience. It is basically just the lyrics from this one song written by Woody. We don't get him singing it but we do get a CD included by The Klezmatics (<3 minutes) doing this song. The lyrics are all very positive and (as usual) catchy.
The last couple of pages discuss Woody's time in New York and his involvement with the Jewish community, where he "saw a strong connection between the Jewish struggle (WW II) and that of his fellow Oklahomans during the Dust Bowl." 3.5*
This book about Hanukah is full of cute and simple illustrations. The words are from the lyrics of the author's song. This would be a fun book to help illustrate the song.
Cute illustrations, simple and short text. A couple of pages of backmatter talk about Guthrie's connection to Jewish culture through his in-laws, but don't mention any of the references in the text.

Woody Guthrie is famous in the Jewish community for capturing the Jewish struggle during the Oklahoma dust bowl. He wrote songs to celebrate the Jewish culture. This book includes a CD sung by The Klezmatics. It’s a fun folk tune that narrates the story. The illustrations remind me of the Sesame Street characters simple yet sweet.
This is a lovely song to sing at Hanukah events - it is geared towards children, but the whole family will love it. I especially like that there is a CD included with the tune of the song!
