The Last Guy She Should Call

Rate this book
She'd got his number…luckily!

For savvy antiques dealer Rowan Dunn life is good—until a passport error gets her deported back to South Africa! Stranded at the airport, Rowan can remember only two phone numbers—her parents' (definitely not an option!) and her best friend's brother's. As much as she hates it, Rowan knows she has no choice. It's time to call Seb Hollis and ask for help….

Seb is even sexier than Rowan remembers—and just as infuriating! He's always pushed her buttons, but at least now she knows how to push them back. Maybe it's time to start sleeping with the enemy—even though Rowan's sure there won't be a whole lot of sleeping going on…!

Another fun read from Harlequin's KISS line. I initially bought it because the South African setting caught my eye, but the story itself held my attention. I've never read this author before, but I liked this book enough to make me want to check out her backlist.

This book features a likable but imperfect heroine - Rowan Dunn has her good points but she really needs to grow up. An incident from her high school years, while understandably very upsetting, led to her decision to leave her home in South Africa and basically spend her time drifting around the world. She has an eye for antiques and it is her antique sales that have kept her going for more than a decade.

The story opens where Rowan's luck has run out. She spent her reserves to procure some valuable works of art for whom she knows she has a buyer in Australia. The problem? She once overstayed her visa in Australia years ago and customs caught on to her. So, instead of selling her items and pocketing the profit, she is stuck on a one-way flight home to South Africa. She has no wish to go home and no money to get herself back on the road again.

Rowan is largely estranged from her family(and they're overseas at the moment anyway), so she finds herself having to call on her best friend's brother for help. And from this setup, we get both a slow-building but sexy love story as well as a story about a heroine finally figuring out who she is. Seb Hollis is a little overly perfect(kind of the hip and modern version of the too rich to be true hero), but he is likable. His willingness to admit that there is more to Rowan than he gave her credit for is admirable as well. Rowan and her tendency to run away from problems frustrated me at times, but she definitely grows up over the course of the story, and by the end, I was firmly convinced that these two would have a real HEA.

Every teenager will tell you they have the uncontrollable urge to take off running and just live their lives without any interference from their parents.

Of course when grown up they realize running away and being all grown up and making their own rules is not everything they expected it to be.

Of course for some it's the only way out because not all parents are able to give their children a little wriggle room. We all need a chance to spread our wings and find ourselves, this is exactly what heroine Rowan does.

Stifled , feeling let down, heartbroken and out of place she takes off, floats from one country to the next and never once thinks about returning home.

So being deported back and straight into the arms of her arch enemy not only brings her face to face with her demons of the past but, it also traps her between a rock and a hard place or rather between running from love and wrapping herself around Seb and all the dreams he can make come true.

This author's books have been a favorite of mine from the first time I read her work, and in all honesty I did not believe she could get any better. With this read she completely blew me away, this is without a doubt the hottest, sexiest, spiciest most awesome book she has written.

The characters were very well written, created with true intensity. The author showed both Seb and Rowan as lost children needing to find their way through the hurt and muck of earlier years and let them develop not only into one of the hottest couples on the reading radar but, as adults standing up and fighting to come out stronger and more grownup than most people who have a very normal no mess no fuss childhood.

This read was so hot and spicy, with the conflict so full of life and so powerful it made me want to leap up and first head bash both characters and the next shove them into a room, lock the door and just let them sort it out before it was too late. Fabulously intense!

Exquisitely described backdrops, stunning dialogue, and mesmerizing passion all wrapped up into a perfect bubble of romance of the very best kind.

I'm taking away a message of we all run and sometimes it is definitely needed but at some point we need to grow up, stop running and instead face our issues and move on to the next part of our lives, not by running for the hills the second we have resolved the issues, instead stick around start fresh and build the life you always wanted even with the occasional hiccup the knowing that you have found home and have found the peace you seeked is all worth it.

I highly recommend this read for all fans looking for a hot, spicy, sweet, sexy and totally fabulously awesome read of how two people are more alike then they realize and how they lift each other up and over the rainbow. Joss keep up the SPICE!

“Isn't it about time you used your powers for good instead of evil?"

Rowan due to a passport error was deported back to South Africa and the only person she could call is her best friend's brother. Now Seb is sexier than ever and maybe sleeping with the enemy would not be so bad.

The title was pretty obvious and it seems like there was no effort into it.

Seb was intelligent but pretty dumb emotionally.

Rowan at first seems like a brat but there were reasons to the way that she acted so it was understandable.

At first this book seems so shallow, but towards the end there are secrets revealed and it wasn't so shallow after all.

Good read. The heroine travels the world buying and selling antiques and art. She's spent everything on netsukes and is trying to get into Australia to meet a buyer, but they kick her out for 3 years for overstaying her visa several years ago. She's sent home to South Africa only to find her parents away, her best friend gone on business, and the hero --best friend's brother who has always been a pain-- the only one she can call. And of course he is his normal, critical, stick-up-his-butt self. It's a great read. The hero and heroine slowly work their way to understanding, and some hotness too. I liked it a lot.

Another Joss Wood book that I adored! This story had me hooked from the beginning. I loved that the heroine wanted to be free and independent. I knew there was a deeper reason for it and we discover that further into the book. Her dialogue is crisp and intelligent - her research top class. The chemistry between the hero and heroine was electric. Love changed them both. I loved the way they fell in love - the process of their hearts changing. The ending was very touching and once again, Joss brought tears to my eyes in this gorgeous, sexy novel.

Tapi ketika bertemu lagi untuk pertama kalinya setelah 9 tahun berpisah, Rowan langsung tertarik sama Seb and vise verca. You can guess what happen next.

Aku gak suka trope insta love dan enemy to lovers. Dan novel ini punya 2 trope itu!!! But surprisingly aku suka 🙈🙈

Sebastian tipikal cowok ganteng yang kaya mampus, motto hidupnya 'kalau mau minum susu, beli sapinya!', pekerjaannya sebagai programmer membuat dia selalu bertindak sesuai nalar sedangkan Rowan seperti kutub berseberangan, melakukan apa saja selama terasa benar.

Kisah cinta Rowan-Seb walaupun manis tapi tidak memuakkan, semuanya terasa pas! Bertengkarnya mereka, sayang2annya semua gak ada yang lebay. Everything feels so natural.

Awal baca, aku sempat terganggu dengan terjemahannya. Sampai sempat terlintas untuk DNF aja. Tapi setelah 50 halaman udah enak kok.

One is the world traveller the other the rooted intellectual. Both used to being arch enemies til 9 years, understanding, and lust change it.

Rowan and Sebestian have known each other since she was a baby. They've been neighbors, her brothers best friend is Seb/ her best friends brother. She's the emotional and he's the logical. But when her mum sees opposites cannot attract, they could defy it all.

I enjoyed this, had a few tears from the hard parent-child relationship, and the ex boyfriend who stabbed her in the back. But otherwise they're a cute couple. Each challenges the other to be outside their comfort zone, and challenging their views on love, commitment and home.

Just wish their was more to the ending. Did they get married, have kids? Did she ever make up with her brother? How'd Peters life turn out anyways? -could be another book. What about Ro planning more events? Callie's story? And Annie & Patch? Did he ever reach out to his mom? So maybe open answers- I love my imagination but sometimes I just want to read it from he authors perspective.

Cons:

Yaaah, mungkin Harlequin udah mulai rada gak cocok buatku? Karena akhir-akhir ini baca Hq cuman awalnya doang terus udahan, wkwk. Awalnya kupikir bakalan suka karena trope nya enemy to lovers gitu, kan? Tapi tuh ternyata aku udah lelah banget ama trope cowok kayak raya yang apa-apanya ngeluarin uanh tuh udah kayak napas. Gampang banget. Belum lagi, narasinya bikin bosen banget, aslinya. Penjelasannya tuh berasa terlalu detail padahal bisa dipersingkat. Terus entah ya aku juga geleng-geleng sama 'hubungan' (Man, i even forget the name for a while

Rowan appears to globe wanderer with no ties to hold her down and a devil may care attitude about her life in general. She only touches base with her friends when everything goes awry. This time there is only one person available when she ends up in hot water yet again. The annoying big brother of her best friend and he is used to helping her out of sticky situations. This time he has a special condition attached to his offer of help.
Sebastian is a technology geek with a lot of hidden baggage and a heart wide enough to accept the eccentricity of Rowan. They both find themselves suddenly dealing with the adults they have become during the long years they haven't seen each other and the memories of the young people they used to be.
This was a quite a deep little book. The main focus was on mothers, their relationships with their children and how those relationships can determine the path you take as an adult. Seb and Rowan have one thing in common they both have mothers who seem indifferent to them and that experience bonds them together in a way. Rowan has to deal with a mother who would rather see her at the other end of the world than at home and Seb has to deal with a mother who decided it was more important to experience life everywhere but at home.
Of course Seb actually fears that the same magnetic pull of the world will tug at Rowan, ergo she will also just up and leave him eventually. Whilst I understand his fear I disagree with the last chapter, because I felt as if he was allowing her to acknowledge that it would never be good enough between them. I was disappointed that she felt it was the right thing to do.
All in all this was an entertaining read with many quips and also not without some emotional moments. Some of which I am sure many of us may be able to identify with.
I received a copy of this book courtesy of Harlequin UK/Mills & Boon.

Relationships can be so complicated. And Rowan has all kinds. First is her best friend Callie who has basically been her lifeline. Growing up next door to each other, Rowan spent more time at Callie's than her own home. Which means she spent time with Callie's older brother Seb. Their relationship was one of finding each other obnoxious and not liking each other. He thought she was trouble. She thought he was stupid for falling for gold-diggers. Her relationships with her parents and brother were not good. She'd left nine years earlier and not looked back. Not come back.

Now she's been deported from Australia and home is the only place to go.

Sexual content but not too graphic. And it was fun to see the relationships figuring themselves out.

I have to admit that I have always been a Nora Roberts fan and thought that no one could come near her style of writing. I was so wrong! Joss Wood creates such appealing characters that you are drawn into their lives and you care, damn it, when they get hurt!

Rowan, Callie and Seb grew up together until life took one of its nasty turns and Rowan left home and country to recover from a broken heart. Years later she lands up in Johannesburg without any cash and has to reluctantly ask Seb for his help.

Can their childhood friendship be rekindled now that they are adults? Will they ever be more than friends or will their past haunt them and drive them apart?

Rowan Dunn’s past had finally caught up with her. she’d been using her UK passport to get in and out of Australia, but her real South African passport revealed she’d overstayed her welcome there – and she’d gotten herself deported. So – sent back “home” cash poor and goods rich, on the cusp of turning around some lovely statuettes, she had to turn to an old friend to get her out of this jam. Read More

I am in serious love with Joss Wood This is a delicious gem! It's an in-love-with-best-friend's-brother trope and opposites-attract trope and So Much More. Like an onion, this has layers and layers and left me feeling deliciously happy. I loved it!

I liked the basis and it was well written, but something fell flat for me. I am not sure what it was and really it gets 3.5 stars. I wish I could find the words to say what was missing.
