Welcome to my biggest let down of 2023 😮‍💨 I put too much faith and hope into this cool cover.

Story: I was really excited for this one. I expected a cool story and adventure with magic and Halloween pumpkin head vibes. Instead we got a huge mishmash of stale plot devices stolen from popular culture.

Our mc is living in an apartment where rent is overdue and she doesn't have the money to pay for it. Then she discovers she suddenly has powers and needs to learn to controll them! So Peter Parker- oh wait, sorry- Ellie goes on an adventure to learn how to use them without giving a single thought as to why she has them.

When the mc gets laid off at work, her boss invites her to take something from the thrift store to keep on her way out. It cuts to her at lunch with a friend showing the small cactus in a Sombrero she picked. She claims she should have taken the cash register instead. Sound familiar? It's stolen from New Girl.

When Jess is fired, the principal puts on a Sombrero and tells her she can pick something from lost and found to keep. It then cuts to her sitting with cici saying she should have picked the slap bracelet.

The whole story is just scenes where you can pinpoint their inspiration (or blatant rip off) of specific movies. On top of it, the mc is so annoying and bland and just accepts everything happening to her with no hesitation or questioning. The plot is all over the place and I didn't care about a single second of it.

Before this review really takes off into rant territory, I'm going to end by asking why the headless horseman pumpkin guy is named Ichabod??? Ichabod was a regular person, the headless horseman doesn't have a name. Not to have my "it's Frankenstien's monster not Frankenstien" moment but come. On.

Art: flat, a few solid colors with little detail. I don't know how to describe it, but it looks too clean. No personality, no heart, no originality.

A man with a pumpkin for a head named Ichabod wants you to be his partner hunting monsters, it was adventurous reading what they hunted and working together on each different case. Perfect for spooky season.

I love when he says"Ellie has a way of seeing the best in people whether we deserve it or not"

I cannot believe how this ends, I need the next book to see his reaction to what she says. Ughh. It was such a great fast read and the art was marvelous.

"I don’t pretend to have all the answers, but I’ll tell you what I can. What would you like to know?
Umm… Is your head really a pumpkin?
…really? That’s what you’re leading with?"

WebToons has been releasing some of their toons in book form and I am obsessed. Have you read Everything is Fine? If not, what are you waiting for? Run! Go out and buy it! So… anyway… I’ll read everything that they release.

This one automatically caught my attention when I saw the cover. It screamed Sleepy Hollow at me and I couldn’t look away. Who wouldn’t want to read a book with a pumpkin headed main character?

The story was interesting and very unique. It was so easy to follow and the scenes that unfolded held my interest enough to where I forgot that I was also watching the baseball game. That tells you how weird this was. Very enjoyable and I can’t wait until the next installment.

I had no idea what to expect with this one, but I really enjoyed it! The artwork and colors were pretty and easy on the eyes, the storyline wasn't too off of the wall, though the MC h and her poor "stranger danger" sensing ability made me want to smack her and it ended on a cliffhanger of sorts, but all together it added up to a book where I will gladly seek out and read the next volume.

Is it weird to admit that I have a TEENY TINY book boyfriend crush on Ichabod, despite (or maybe because of) his pumpkin head?

Kinda not happy that his partner, the MC h whose stupidity moves the plot forward at the end of the volume, is quite possibly a love interest for him in the future. She brings it down a star, cuz I be petty like that yo.

YOU DESERVE BETTER ICHABOD!! YOU DESERVE ME!!

Et hem. I digress.

I highly recommend this if you want to read something different where if there is a romance, it is a slow burn, at least in the first volume. It has good action and the ending has enough of a hook to grab, but not so much that it annoys.

4, I am SO on board for the next book can it come out yesterday please, stars.

My thanks to NetGalley and WEBTOON Unscrolled for an eARC of this to read and review.

Third Shift Society Volume One is a published Webtoon by Meredith Moriarty and is about Ellie who becomes a Paranormal Investigator after assisting the pumpkin-headed Ichabod as he subdues a spirit. This comic is sort of a "monster of the week" style where Ellie and Ichabod investigate paranormal activity over the course of one to two chapters with recurring characters in each chapter as well.

I have never read anything by this author before and I am fairly new to Webtoons so I didn't have much expectations going in. I think this is a thorough first stab at a series, but the characterization could use some work. I felt like at the end of the first volume, I hadn't gotten to know Ichabod or Ellie outside of very general characteristics such as Human or Spirit, male/female, etc.

I don't know too much as to what is going to happen further in the series and it didn't draw me in enough to make me want to continue, but I was enjoying the story while I read it.

Thank you to NetGalley and Wattpad WEBTOON Book group for an advanced review copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I would like to start my review by expressing how difficult it was to read the story as there was "webtoon unscrolled" written across every page, sometimes covering text, and the images were very blurry.

I was extremely let down by this book. I was expecting a fun story with some spooky potentially Halloween vibes but unfortunately, I did not get that. What I got instead was some normal girl suddenly discovering she has these powers and now she needs to control them, all while being joined by a guy with a pumpkin for a head who has known her for all but 5 seconds and is ready to trust her enough to experience life-threatening situations alongside each other.

The main character is extremely annoying and bland and the dialogue does not give any substance to anything, and as much as I hate this term, she was truly radiating "pick me" vibes the entire time. The whole story felt extremely juvenile and felt as though it just took inspiration from a bunch of other works and mashed it all into one.

I liked the art style, and thought the colours were nice, although it was nothing special.

Overall, it really missed the mark for me and I do not see myself picking up any other volumes in the series.

Loved this! This graphic novel has the right blend of spooky, funny, and relatable writing. I enjoyed getting to know Ellie and Ichabod and following along on their adventures as Ellie learns more about her gift. The illustrations are beautifully done and perfectly matched to the story. I can’t wait to see what happens next!

Disclaimer: I received a review copy for free via NetGalley, and am voluntarily leaving my honest thoughts. Many thanks to the publisher, WebToon, for the opportunity!

I was drawn in by the cover because heeelllllloooo pumpkin head man in a suit. 👀 😂 But while there were some nice episodic stuff and an okay-ish setup, it was a bit too bare bones for me. There's sort of a wink wink nudge nudge at something potentially budding between Ichabod and Ellie, but it lacked any actual camraderie build up between the two, and things seemed a bit too passive in the plot. There were no actual big problems for me, but yeah, just a tad too simple for my taste so I wouldn't really want to continue. The art was okay, but the backgrounds/environments ended up being solid colors way too often that it cheapened a bit of the wordlbuilding too. Overall, it's missing a bit of that charm and spark for me.

This was an interesting read there were things I really enjoyed like the gorgeous art and the character design. The story opened up great- It started out with a few bits that made me actually laugh out loud, so I was expecting the humor to continue throughout, but sadly it didn't. The pacing and story development was a bit wonky and I think could've used some fleshing out. There were big plot points that are sort of zoomed past or not explained well. I wish there was more time spent developing the story. That being said, I really loved the characters and the story is interesting and I look forward to follow up volumes.

Third Shift Society is about a woman named Ellie who isn't having the best time getting through life. She's behind on her bills and she's just lost her job. She tries her luck at winning the lottery but that pans out equally as bad as trying to win at a claw machine. She's down on her luck until she witnesses a paranormal battle in an alleyway and lo and behold, she has magical powers. She's then recruited by Ichabod, a gorgeous man with a pumpkin head (yeah, I said it) She's recruited as a supernatural investigator soon after. Who'd turn down something like that from a guy with a pumpkin head? Certainly not me.

What I liked:

The relationship between Ellie and Ichabod. I know there are other volumes of this series but so far their comradery is both professional and sweet.

The fact that not everything weird and unexplained has to be terrifying.

The artwork

What I wanted more of:

Ellie. I feel like we barely get to know her before she's thrust into this new world. We also don't get many answers on how she gets her powers just yet, just to warn you.

The main plot. I know it revolves around what happens to Ellie and some secrets Ichabod is keeping, but it was very slow going. This may be because this was a webtoon and there is only so much you can put into printed volumes. On the flip side, I do feel like the side plots are introducing characters we are going to see in the future.

Overall, I liked it and look forward to seeing what happens next.

Thank you, Webtoon for the review copy!

Ellie suddenly discovering that she has powers and being 100% okay with that so quickly is wild. Accepting a job from a dude with a pumpkin head fast is even wilder, but desperate times call for desperate measures. I loved how she immediately wanted to know whether his head was truly a pumpkin, because same, but minimal freak out from someone who discovered paranormal creatures exist and you can suddenly produce blue flames from your hands.

I love the art style and Ichabod. Who knew you could find a pumpkin headed man attractive? 😹 We do need to know more backstory because we honestly know very little about them. Where did Ellie’s powers suddenly come from and why? Ichabod is just a complete enigma, but that’s all probably to come in later volumes anyway. Of course everything is yet to be answered, and it’s set up for more takedowns of demons, ghouls, and ghosts, along with secrets discovered and revealed from our characters, which I thoroughly look forward to. Overall, I enjoyed this. It was cute, quirky, funny, and I like the characters. 4/5

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Genre: Fantasy comic

Main Concepts: The MC, Ellie gets fired from her job and tries several different occupations to find the right fit for her. She meets the other MC, Ichabod, and he offers her a gig as a paranormal investigator after she shows magical abilities. The comic then shows all sorts of paranormal jobs the two do. There’s another character that seems super sketch and is for sure involved in some crazy stuff that Ellie and Ichabod have to investigate.

Favorite scenes: The character develop of Ellie with her powers are all good scenes.

World building: Doesn’t delve too deep into a detailed world but this is a comic so you get the graphics. Basically just a human world mixed with all sorts of paranormal craziness that the humans aren’t aware of. Tue comic does a good job at introducing readers to new paranormal creatures and the lore behind them.

Spice level: zero romance in this comic but it’s cute without it.

Overall, this was a cute little paranormal webtoon that is a super easy read and gets you right in the spooky season spirit. I do really want the next comic now because the ending?! Like the cliffhanger has got me. I want to see what happens next. I really enjoyed this little world with Ellie and Ichabod. I’m excited to see more growth between the two characters. Ichabod is definitely a good influence on Ellie and has a lot to teach her. I don’t even mind the lack of romance in this webtoon. The only reason I’m not going full 5 ⭐️ is because some parts of the comic could have transitioned a bit better but that’s the only complaint I have.

Thank you Netgalley and author/creators for a copy of this arc in exchange for a honest review. I’m ready for the next one now!

This graphic novel has been adapted from a Webtoon comic- I thought the premise was interesting: Ellie comes into supernatural powers and joins up with Ichabod, the pumpkin-headed paranormal investigator to solve cases. Unfortunately, the artwork and characters were bland and forgettable. Some of the mini-cases were intriguing, and I thought had some promise, plot-wise, but the book didn't really deliver. The dialogue is uninteresting, I couldn't tell you any personality traits of the main characters, there's no backstory on why the MC suddenly has powers, nor does she seem curious about how she got them. Overall, I don't think I'll remember much of what happened in this story or anything about the characters if you were to ask me about it a month from now, and probably in a year I'll look back on my goodreads and not even remember reading this.

"Third Shift Society” by Meredith Moriarty is a captivating graphic novel that effortlessly blends the supernatural with humor and mystery. Moriarty's distinctive artwork immediately draws you into a world where paranormal creatures exist alongside our everyday reality.

The characters in this volume are wonderfully complex and relatable. The protagonist, Ellie, is a witty and resourceful paranormal investigator, and her interactions with the enigmatic Morty add a layer of intrigue to the story. The dialogue is sharp, filled with humor, and the banter between characters is both endearing and entertaining.

What sets "Third Shift Society" apart is its unique premise. Instead of focusing solely on the supernatural, it delves into the practical aspects of dealing with ghosts, ghouls, and other creatures of the night. This fresh take on the genre brings a sense of realism to the supernatural world.

Moriarty's artistic style is visually stunning, with vibrant colors and detailed backgrounds that enhance the storytelling. Each panel is meticulously crafted, contributing to the overall immersion of the reader in this supernatural universe.

While this volume leaves some questions unanswered, it sets the stage for an intriguing series that promises even more depth and development in future installments. "Third Shift Society" is a must-read for fans of paranormal mysteries, and I eagerly await the next chapter in Ellie and Morty's adventures.

I absolutely loved the art, but the characters lack some development, and the plot is a little bit too anthological so far, for the story to be really engrossing.

I would go as far as to give it an extra half star (3.5), just based on that Kafka homage in the last chapter, but this still needs some work.

I actually wasn't even sure of the whole nature of the world where this is set, and I though it was kind of a mixture of our own, with some magical elements as a daily part of it. But when reading the final Q&A section I found out that it is actually suppose to be just our plain world, with the paranormal elements being kind of an underground thing, ignored by most common humans... and, I don't know, but that's not the vibe I was getting. So, once again, world building and storytelling need some improvement.

But fun overall!

Thank you NetGalley, Wattpad Webtoon Book Group and Meredith Moriarty for the ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.

This was a cute fun story. The different cases they take on are all unique and interesting. However I don't understand how the main character finds out she has magic powers and doesn't even once question is or try to figure out where they came from.
The art is fine but it's pretty basic, there isn't a lot to look at because the backgrounds are pretty empty.

Overall it was a fun time I just feel like it could have been slightly better.

Ellie has a problem, a big problem. Her rent is due, she just lost her job and she seems to mess up every other job she tries. But when she intervenes in a fight between a pumpkin-head man and a strange ram, she finds she has psychic powers. Plus Ichabod, the man with a pumpkin for a head, offers her a job - as a paranormal detective! Now she just needs to learn how to control her powers without burning down her apartment and figure out what strangeness is going on without getting in so deep that she can't ever get out. Easy-peasy, right? It will be fun to see what happens next!

Thanks Netgalley and Wattpad for the chance to read this title!

This was such a fun graphic novel! It starts off on quite a funny note and just keeps getting better. I really like our protagonist and her partner, and am very interested in reading future volumes to see how she continues to grow into her new life.
