He led the Indianapolis Colts to Super Bowl victory on February 4, 2007, the first such win for an African American head coach. Dungy established another NFL first by becoming the first head coach to lead his teams to the playoffs for ten consecutive years.
Dungy joined the Colts in 2002 after serving as the most successful head coach in Tampa Bay Buccaneers' history. He has also held assistant coaching positions with the University of Minnesota, Pittsburgh Steelers, Kansas City Chiefs, and Minnesota Vikings. Before becoming a coach, Dungy played three seasons in the NFL.

He retired from coaching in 2009 and now serves as a studio analyst for NBC's Football Night in America. He and his wife, Lauren, are the parents of ten children.
Having been inspired by previous works from the Dungy/Whitaker team, I was eagerly awaiting a similar experience with "Uncommon Life" when I bought it almost a year ago. Well, unfortunately it has sat in pretty much the same spot on my dresser for the past year, as I have struggled to get through even the first month or so of devotions.
Now, I have to preface the following critique by saying that perhaps I just am not experienced in the ways that typical devotion books are formatted. However, there are two main reasons why I was so disappointed with this book:
1. The material is just so generic. Yes, it does focus on a key bible verse each day, but, whereas in the past the appeal of these books was the lessons learned from Dungy's personal life struggles/experiences, here it just seems like standard fare. Like I could have just bought any old devotion book and gotten the same material.
2. Each day's passages were so short and succinct that I felt like I had to read more just to get my daily dose of spiritualism. But then, of course, I was missing the whole point of "daily devotions".
Overall, with those two previous points combined, I was never even able to completely make my way through this book. Like I said, maybe I'm just too new to the whole "daily devotion" concept, but this one did not capture my interest enough to earn my time each day.
Personal Response: I really liked this book because it taught me how to be uncommon. It is a good book filled with daily devotions for mostly men who enjoy sports. The book made me realize how being yourself can be beneficial. Tony put together a daily devotion journal that also included sports. Tony Dungy won a Super Bowl for the Colts in 2007. I liked how Tony made this book in a journal based style. Tony Dungy was the first African American coach to win a Super Bowl.
Plot Summary: The First thing Tony Dungy talked about was what he did to keep a strong relationship with God throughout the football season. Tony didn't have a lot of time to bond with his family because he had a team to coach. Dungy taught in his book, how to be uncommon. This basically means that if you want to be successful, then you have to do something that a normal person wouldn't do. Tony said that living an uncommon life can have its struggles, but in the long run it will lead to success.
Recommendation: I would recommend this book to young male adults who want religion in their life and also like sports. This book also has words that can be confusing to younger people. This book was amazing, I really liked it, and i give it four stars.
Are you ready to start the New Year with a challenge to live an "uncommon life?" Join Coach Tony Dungy on this year long journey with this daily devotional that will help you create a life that is more fulfilling and inspiring.
This daily devotional focuses on seven themes, with each theme repeating every seven days. Therefore, every week you will read one devotion from each of the following themes: Core, Family, Friends, Potential, Mission, Influence and Faith.
Each devotion includes Scripture and an Uncommon Key, which is an application or action to implement based on what you've just read. This isn't just a "read-it-and-you're-done" type of devotional. The goal is to not only engage your mind, but to also challenge your heart.
I love devotionals, and when I saw that Tyndale House Publishers was offering book reviewers the chance to review Tony Dungy's The One Year Uncommon Life Daily Challenge, I knew that I wanted to be apart of this virtual book tour and to also accept this worthy challenge for 2012. As I skimmed through the book, I loved how the authors chose the seven themes, the Scriptures and the Uncommon Keys that are part of the daily devotional for the year. Each theme and accompanying Scriptures and Uncommon Keys are so inspirational, how could you not want to step up and accept this challenge? I look forward to starting the challenge on January 1, 2012 ... I look at it as a new chance to enhance my life to one that will be more fulfilling and spiritual. So are you ready to accept this challenge?
Disclaimer: At the request of the authors and Tyndale House Publishers, a Paperback edition of this book was sent, at no cost to me, for my honest review and participation in the virtual book tour event.
The One Year Uncommon Life Daily Challenge was the best book I have read so far this year. I loved this book so much I will be buying it for my friends and family throughout the year. The best way to describe the book is to say it is a positive look at Biblical principles.
The book, written by Tony Dungy, would be a perfect gift for any young person looking for guidance. It is easy to follow and divided into daily readings that will not take much time to complete. I think it is perfect for family devotions, especially those with teenagers.
Mr. Dungy may be known for coaching football but you are not overwhelmed by football examples in this book. Yes he uses analogies that contain football but even a non-football fan can enjoy reading this book.
Each day starts with a Bible verse and a principle that is going to be talked about. The actual devotion is only a page or two long. The insights of the author are incredible. Each day is filled with very practical advice on numerous subjects.
Two of my favorite pieces of advice from this book were, don’t pat yourself on the back after doing well at something, let someone else do it and you can have influence on others whether you are a champion or a retail clerk. This book was packed with so many great Biblical principles that I will be reading it again!
I would like to thank the publisher for the copy of this book I enjoyed reading. I gave an honest review based solely on my opinion of what I read.
Tony Dungy is a man who has lived his faith before us. He is a goal-setter and has lead his football team to a Super Bowl win. How has he reached his goals thus far? In his new book, "The One Year Uncommon Life Daily Challenge," Mr. Dungy sets out the principles of living an uncommon life today, principles in place in his life. Each day is set up with a Bible verse and devotional theme, followed by an "Uncommon Key." These keys will lead you to a closer walk with God, and will in turn change your relationships with others. Can you live a life of honor, integrity, and uncommonness? We all can when we take one step at a time. This book will help put you on that path to an "Uncommon Life." Are you ready for the challenge?
I enjoy devotionals, and this one has the extra pull of the challenge. It is a book to read each day, savor, and put into practice. It will make a wonderful gift for you or someone else, and I think would make a wonderful discussion base for couples' daily devotions. I plan on getting a copy for our library and want to use it daily. I received my free digital review copy from Net Galley and the publisher, and thank them for the opportunity.
The One Year Uncommon Life Daily Challenge is a devotional written on the rotating themes of core, family, friends, potential, mission, influence, and faith. Since the devotions stand alone, the book can be started at any time of the year without confusion. Each devotion has a scripture and a way to apply or act on the information and a challenge to “do more for God’s Kingdom.”
I found the devotions powerful and I enjoyed the format. The book begins with information about how to use the book. I particularly appreciated the final paragraph that encourages the reader to keep on going and not try to catch up after missing a day, but to “spend time with God today.” I believe that this will make a great addition to a year, culminating in a stronger Christian life and relationship with God.
It turns out this wasn't really my kind of book to read, but I read it anyways, im not really a quitter and perservere as usually books can change throughout, they grow on me like this one soon did. To start your year off strong this is a good book to have. Each day there is a piece of reading, sports related but quite spiritual. Also there is a principle to put into practice each day, so its very hands on and had me thinking a lot about the reading. This devotional focuses on seven factors, friends, family, otential, mission, influence, and faith, each week you read one devotion from each of the factors, these provide us with the tools we need to grow within our lives and within our faiths. A very valuable book to start off 2012 with!
I read 0ne page a day as part of my daily devotions. I have learned many new insights from what Tony/Nathan have put on these pages. Actually, I started it in Feb. Found in my church library. I'm doing it off-day, but that doesn't make the lessons less important. I did June 10 today. I aslo do an Upper Room devotion (on-day) and I have found that many many times the on-day Upper Room and the off-day Uncommon Life devotions match up with the lessons they teach me on that day. Very Cool!!!!
I finished this at the beginning of the month. It was AWESOME!!!!
This was my devotional for 2022. Thanks Tony for all your encouragement and wisdom to live a life of eternal value. I’m not a pro athlete or Super Bowl coach, (yet!), but I could relate to almost everything he shared and I’m grateful.
He doesn’t sugarcoat the hard parts of life but he’s always pointing us to the Father who loves us . Great stuff,
The front cover has a photo of Tony’s face, so after a year, I’m pretty sure I could pick him out from the crowd if ever our paths cross in this life!
Would I recommend you get this and dig into the depths that are there? It’s a yes from me.
This book is great it talks about The Lord . The book also challenges you to do different things to do through out the year.it inspires me two become a nice person and to make younger people follow in my footsteps.God has blessed people my doing many things for you so it now your time to follow in the footsteps of GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This book will assist your spiritual growth by inspiring you to read scriptures daily. Tony Dungy does an excellent job employing anecdotes to paraphrase and support the overall meaning of scriptures used for this tome. It challenges reads to think and to ponder over spiritual decisions within their personal and professional life experiences.
I love, love, love Tony Dungy. What a great role model for a bunch of pro sports men. This should be in everyone's library even though it's geared toward men. Love it. I still read it as part of my daily devotions.
I use this book with a small group of men on Facebook. We read the daily chapter and comment on the Facebook page as to what our thoughts are about the daily chapter. Great stories that always seems to be important to one of us.
This was a great year long devotional. Very well written and practical. I don't remember one day that the lesson wasn't applicable to my life. An excellent source of encouragement to get your day started.
Read this every day, along with the Bible. In tandem with what you read, pray earnestly and honestly. And pay close attention to the ideas raised by Dungy and Whitaker. Listen to their observations and contemplate the questions they ask. Do all of this and you'll see God at work in your life.
I enjoyed reading these devotionals each day for a few months, but after that they sounded like earlier stories. There were good messages here, but the constant football vignettes became old.
I really enjoyed this book. It challenged me to step outside of my comfort zone throughout the year. Helping me to learn, understand and accept what God wants me to be.
This book really spoke to me. Tony's story was extremely inspiring to me. The way this book is setup is really unique. This book really help through my every day problems.
