No longer available. Removed from AFF in 2012. M/m slash, WIP.
18-year old Talya was supposed to spend a quiet life practicing meditation in a temple, but when Commander Micah, heading an invasion force, takes him as a war captive to provide personal services for himself and his lieutenents, Talya becomes collateral damage. Can Talya survive Micah's casual cruelty to become more than a bed slave?
~*~ Sticks and Stones may break my bones... But Whips and Chains excite me... ~*~ I write slash... And it's usually dark and brutal... At least in the beginning... (But I also like happy endings.) Hope you enjoy. (AFF)
Having dinner while watching a ribcage being cracked open to perform open heart surgery on TV? Hey, no problemo!
Munching on a sandwich while reading the opening scene of Collateral Damage? UNGH! Maybe I'm not as tough as I initially thought. I've read a fair amount of books with stomach-churning scenes so far, but THIS was an experience I think I could've done without. At least I now realize that I actually have limits, which is strangely comforting.
So I don't know about this book. The author comes across as a loose cannon. She switches from ridiculously violent scenes to endearments littered sappiness. Then back to disgusting violence for a bit, then some sort of honeymoon period. It's all so terribly unbalanced. It's supposed to be a WIP, but it felt very finished to me. I wouldn't know what more could've been said. It looks like the author was fed up with her work anyway, because the last chapters felt very much like a summary. Very uninspired and rushed.
Please check out Emma's more positive review. I wouldn't want anyone to miss out on a free read, just because I didn't enjoy it. Personally, whenever a book gets compared to Bloodraven in reviews, I'm like a moth. I'm fluttering straight into that flame. It's a comparison that's just too shiny for me to let slip. Although I do get why Bloodraven was brought up in this case, there's a difference between these two books that I consider crucial. In Bloodraven, one of the MC's is tortured brutally, but not (or less so) by his captor. In Collateral Damage, the captor does puke-worthy things to the MC, and then becomes his love interest. Considering the things that were done to the victim, I found it impossible to enjoy the 'romance'. Instead, I was so goddamn angry and disgusted the entire time. Then things took a sappy turn for the worse and I was...just lost.
Oh well, I think it's great that this dark stuff is out there for people to enjoy. Which is why I'm adding another star. It made MY blood run cold. That could be a recommendation for YOU.;)
Very good dark rapefic, very similar to Bloodraven, but without the ogres. Lots of hot non-con, rape, anal training etc, and a MC who clearly has Stockholm Syndrome. Looks like it's heading towards an HEA, which always makes me happy.
EDIT: Story has been taken down. *tears*
I hope it's going to be published. The author still has an account on AFF, with fanfics up, but their original fiction has all been removed.
It's a freebie, so I don't want to rate it badly, because freebies are awesome.
The writing is good, the plot is solid, but I didn't buy into the relationship at all. Not Talya. He was good. Stockholm Syndrome all over the shop for Talya. It was Micah I didn't believe. A-Grade asshole turns into Reformed Do-Gooder all because of the love of a good man? Well, boy.
I'm not sure why I didn't love this more. I mean, I love slave fic, I've written slave fic...and all the components are there. They just didn't quite work for me - YMMV.
I think I would have preferred if Micah had stayed a bastard, because his transformation didn't feel very natural.
One day I'm gonna write some slave fic where it's all good and Stockholmy, and then the slave stabs his master in the eye with a knife. Which is how I think I would have liked this one to end. :)
12.19.2016 update - I just saw that this is published now under the author's Ayden Sadari name, and also listed separately here, though with a typo as to the author - Collateral Damage. The best part is it's now available for sale at Amazon. I'm off to buy and see if the ending is expanded from the free version I read.
Original Review from 2011:
It looks like there are just a few chapters left in this long WIP (as of 12/26/11). I really enjoyed this story although there are some pretty gruesome parts early on, and looked for more by the author. It seems there was another online book which was withdrawn for editing, but the author has also just published a completed ebook, Skaia under the name Ayden Sadari. I bought it from Amazon, and it was as satisfying as Collateral Damage. Hope the withdrawn book is made available soon!
8/13/12 update - no longer available on adultfanfiction.net. I think the author plans to publish the finished work eventually, but from her facebook page, seems to have removed this story after adultfanfiction imposed some sort of draconian rule about authors responding to comments.
Caution, the blurb says Talya is 18. He's 15 in the story. Slave-fic, stay's true to itself for the most part... master falls for his slave but still treats him like a sub-human, slave boy goes full Stockholm. They live HEA, after a whole bunch of drama.
Brutal capture, as a war prize Talya is used and abused soundly. Slow shift as possessiveness grows in Micah. There's a weird dichotomy in this story that never gets over the misalgined feeling. Talya falls way too fast and Micah might be a good warrior, but he's an idiot about so many other things. His ineptitude in running his estate is probably the least believable aspect of his personality.
Anyway, a whole bunch of bits didn't click completely.
2,5 stars. This was rather alright. However, during the entire book, I couldn't quite make myself forget that seriously grown men and young boys together creep me out. The constant use of the term "boy" didn't help, nor the giggling. 20/50 I'd be more OK with than 15/45. I'd prefer more or less equal age, which would also make the dominion of one over the other much more interesting.
This book has made me realize a couple of things. Firstly, I don't care much for descriptions of torture. I'm not bothered by accounts of pain, but by damage. The possibility of permanently damaging something, and healing procedures... that's nasty - for some reason. Plus, it really holds no interest for me, I'm left altogether indifferent when I'm not grimacing to myself. I really do prefer to read about emotional distress, angst and depression . So, on that account, this wasn't really a success for me.
I'm not sure what to think of the writing. It's rather choppy, but you do get used to it, and it could be seen as a conscious style choice. I couldn't help thinking that - content aside - it would be well suited to carry out information structure analysis on, since it's basically all topic-comment, topic-comment all the way, with very few unique referents. :D
What else? Micah was a totally schizo character, who went from war brute to loving creep. That was a bit weird.
For a while, I didn't think this story had much essence; it felt like scenes strung together, with a minimal amount of effort put into the surrounding scenery. That changed though as the story evolved. The story is rather long. Too long, I'd say. Buuut altogether, it's not bad, just... perhaps in need of some more editing and fixing.
Definitely too much fluff for my taste, but it had some nice scenes.
idk. It didn't seem that dark to me. I mean, yeah, the beginning was all Neko and stuff (especially the part where they start talking about turning his nipples into women's tits or something), but *shrug
There was a moment when I actually thought Tayla/Micah's romance was feasible. It's everything Tribute tried to be but wasn't O_o
And then it was weird.
The Stockholm-y-ness became a lot clearer.
Idk, man. Micah's one of those jerk-jock types.
Yeah. It's abusive. idk about relationship, but it's plenty abusive. As for very similar to Bloodraven... idk. I don't remember much of that except for the weird lord dude who annoyed the shit out of me. Well, no. I remember many parts of it.
I'll leave this short, just wanted to say that this is a wonderful WIP full of emotional conflict that draws the reader into the everyday lives of two men from completely different worlds. I would definitely recommend it, although I want to give fair warning that it holds to definitive plot. There are no twists and turns, no true villians or plots, but I won't judge it by that. This is a wonderful book for those that enjoy a slow read curled up on a couch on a rainy day with a tall glass of wine :)
3.5 rounded up The ending was super rushed, as were some scenes. There were also a lot of spelling/grammar mistakes, but I loved the story, angst, and abundance of hurt/comfort.
