....If you love paranormal and vamps and weres and a new thing, for me anyway, blood singers, then this book is for you! It is rated young adult (which I am not i am 43) but it delivers a strong storyline with likable and unlikable characters, plenty of action and nail bitting stuff as well as enough weres and vamps for anyone..!" - heather sharp

I don't see where all the 4 & 5 star reviews are coming from. Friends of the author I think.
What is interesting about this book is the idea - the paranormal community, split into Vampire, Were and Blood Singers. I thought that was novel and has a lot of potential.
What was awful about the book was the complete lack of editing with blatant errors that shouldn't appear in a book (for example confusing decibels and frequency, use of "chic" instead of "chick", ... ) and the continuous change in point of view was simply annoying, and telling the story alternating flashbacks to life before Julia was captured was painful. While I can't say there was a more obvious better way, it didn't make for a great read.
Overall, the story felt like something written by a clever college student - lots of potential, but very unpolished writing.
A personal thing for me (YMMV) - I really hated her choice of language/idiomatic speaking for the different groups - it really grated on me. Perhaps some of this is just recreating the way people in Alaska and the Pacific NW speak (although I've spent a lot of time in Seattle and not heard this), but it added no value at all.
The story really dragged during the parts where Julia was captured by Were & Vampire and while doing so, she was able to firmly convince the reader of the inhumaneness of each (with of course one or two special exceptions of the characters that later go on to rise above the pettiness of their current society)
Unfortunately, NONE of the groups after Julia are particularly pleasant - even the ones nominally "her people" are almost as bad and grating to be around.
Anyway, if you are interested in an interesting twist on the paranormal and can put up with the rest, go for it. Otherwise read one of the other many fine books out there.
When I read the first 2 chapters I thought this book had a lot of promise, but as I read on the book was way too jumpy, constantly changing POV and all around a headache to read, I had to constantly re-read just to make sure I was reading it correctly...... don't get me wrong great plot, great characters, but overall the writing style of the author is horrendous.
Me and the Amish community will probably NEVER see eye to eye on.. well. anything. But there’s ONE teeny tiny thing we can agree on. Shunning.. I’ve used this technique a time or two when someone doesn’t take my word of a good book ,or an author they need to watch.
So listen to me closely..... Read.this.book.
Julia’s life is filled with tragedy at every turn. Just when she thinks things are starting to look up for her, she tragically loses her husband. To make her loss even more acute, she is thrust into a world where Vampires and Weres’ exist. And each group needs something from her.... Blood. Her blood is not just that. It’s uncommon and infrequent. Each society wants it, and she’s left making a hundred-to-one choice. All the while trudging through her new life as the Chosen....
If there is one thing that I’ve come to learn while reading Ms.Blodgett’s novels is that you can NEVER assume who the leading love interest is. I love a good love triangle as much as the next person. And, normally I can pin point who the MC is going to end up with. I can never take the easy route with ANY of her novels! She knocked me off my feet when I read her Savage Blood series. And she did it again with Blood Song! She has this impressive ability of making you fall for the guy you THINK you should hate. The one you least expect!!
Now this leads me up to the Romance...(Ah! there’s the good stuff!) I classify it as New Adult. It’s not descriptive. YET.... (This is a good yet!) at the time, it is. It’s descriptive with emotions, and intensity. YOU want to BE the girl that is getting romanced by the massive hunk of a dude.
I’m not even going to go THERE with the males.. If I did, I’d bust out my graphical chart of who’s more gorgeous than the next.. Then I’d get so frustrated I’d walk away because I can’t tell you which male is more freakishly good looking!!!... They’re all so great!!! I know who my acclamation’s for, and i’ll leave it at that. But come on. Tamara could have Julia bounce back and forth between all of the guys and I’d be okay with it.
Vampire stories have been turned over, and re-used throughout the past few years that you can’t even tell the difference between most plots... Blood Song brings a unique twist to the genre that I completely wolfed down...
I downloaded this title because the premise sounded sort of interesting.
Since it was free, I wasn't really expecting too much. I was willing to overlook some issues if the plot was engaging enough to keep me interested. However, despite having some curiosity as to how the story will continue, I was unable to finish the book.
The constant jumping between viewpoints and time periods makes the book nearly unreadable. I think telling the story through flashback sequences is unnecessarily confusing; if it had been handled differently it might have increased some of the poignancy of the story but as-is it just felt forced.
There are some really nice phrases hidden in the writing - the author has potential, but she needs a good editor.
What really sealed the deal though was when I reached page 17 and found the following:
"He was already feeling gay in a tux, the bow around his neck was a slowly encroaching noose."
"Gay" is not a synonym for "stupid". (To add insult to injury, the quote in question is also a comma splice). Yes, this is close 3rd and the teenage boy in question might have actually thought that. But he shouldn't have. I don't tolerate the derogatory use of the term "gay" and so I will not be reading this book or any other by this author.
Julia and Jason love each other with all their hearts. Secretly married in Vegas right after they graduate high school, they had no idea what the world truly holds for them. Unknown creatures crash their happiness because Julia is the rarest of rare, not just a “Singer” but the purest of Singers. A battle to claim Julia’s superior blood and genetics will rock the vampire’s, the werewolves’ and the singer’s worlds and nothing will stand in their way.
This book had everything, action, mystery, adventure, strong characters, friendship and love. Once in a while you come across a book that touches you emotionally, Blood Singers is just such a book. You laugh, cry and cheer because you are tied so intimately with the characters. Tied in such a way that it makes your heart hurt when they hurt and laugh when they laugh. Julia, faced with devastating circumstances and a world she didn’t even know existed, blew me away with her ability to survive and thrive. Without a doubt, this is DEFINITELY AN AWESOME READ, one I’m sure I will revisit often!
Simply put, I liked this book, but the sequence of chapters felt a little disjointed. In the beginning, the reader is literally thrown into the fray of a disastrous set of events surrounding a special young woman. But here's the the thing, where does it all start?
I'm moving onto book 2, where hopefully the mystery will be solved :/
I don't think I have read anything by this author before and am not sure if I will continue the series. I really liked the paranormal aspect of it but not the romance part. I liked the beginning of the story but when it became a love square (? more than a love triangle) is when I began to lose interest. I understand one of the main characters is super important, but it just became too much for me.
I think I am being generous with the three star review. I would get to where I was enjoying the book a bit then another kidnapping would happen, then another..Maybe I gave up to soon, but by the time I got to the third kidnapping and her being a Queen, I just couldn't handle it anymore. The book just was not for me. So, since I didn't finish the book, it probably is more of a 2.5 star read. I wanted more and not more meaning more kidnappings.
This book is a wonderful coming of age story. Julia is incredibly strong female character that withstands more than her share of trauma. The book is well written with a very few very small typos but not enough to cause concern or distract from the story at all. The characters are realistic. By the end of the story you feel like you know them. It is definately a new take on a very familiar concept. Who hasn't read a book about vampires and werewolves? Each group is given equal page time and are amazingly dynamic. I definately was rooting for the vamps in the begining. Then I was rooting for Julia and Adi's friendship. Then I was like 'yeah go Blood Singers'. Tamara created a new story without rehashing the same ole same. The ending ahh I wanted to keep reading and reading and reading. I was like seriously she's going to make me wait for another book! I know that I will be rereading this before the next books come out! I would say this is another great to start to what is to be another one of my favorite series! I should also mention that this book was a gift from the author. I would have bought it myself and devoured it had she not I love her work that much!!
It started out a little confusing and it took me two tries to get past that part. Once I did, I was hooked. I love the characters! And the concept of the story is fantastic. Highly recommend :)
*******************3.5 stars******************* I’ve read a lot of vampire/werewolf stories and thought I’d seen everything, but Tamara Rose Blodgett’s Blood Singers was definitely something new. Really a story more about the hatred between supernatural races and how one common thread between them can send them all into utter turmoil, this book was a whirlwind ride from start to finish!
Jullia was definitely one of those characters dumped on by fate. Having lost both of her parents in childhood from a car accident, you’d think she’d suffered enough. But just when it seems like she’s going to have the dream life with her wonderful boyfriend Jason, all hell breaks lose and she finds out that nothing in her life is as it seems. She is a Blood Singer, one of the beings vampires need to make human blood potent enough to sustain them, and she is the Rare One, destined to change the fate of the supernatural world. She’s torn from the world as she knows it and tossed into one hazardous situation after another at the hands of werewolves, vampires, and other Blood Singers, always because of what she means for their kind and what she can do or be for them. Each has their own agenda for her, leaving her feeling caged as they carry out their plans. But she never loses her determination to find her freedom and escape the ones can’t see her past the purpose she represents.
This was such an unusual story in the multitude of characters and types of supernatural beings that were at play. Blodgett’s descriptions of her characters were so vivid and lifelike, it was fascinating imagining the world she created. Julia literally escaped from one bad situation only to fall into yet another, each time discovering even more about herself and what was being asked of her. And without fail, being the Rare One had the males of each species falling all over themselves!! When she isn’t busy trying to find a way to escape her captors, she’s fending off advances from potential mates that are vying for her attention, from every direction and every species. I think by the time the fourth male came sniffing around, I was done trying to figure out who was really going to be Julia’s love interest (if any), because there’s no telling at this point! It was a bit frustrating, but it definitely keeps you on your toes as she goes about her adventures.
As much as the excitement of many supernatural factors was captivating, the story ended up suffering from a rather crippling overabundance. It was oftentimes too many moving parts to follow along, flipping back and forth between so many POV and points in time. While I loved seeing the different perspectives of some of the main characters, it would have been best if it ended there. Instead, we see through the eyes of many of the supporting cast as well, and this coupled with the time shifts made the story rather choppy at times. Having said that, I enjoyed the book as a whole and I am anxious to get my hand on the sequel so I can see where things go for Julia and this memorable cast of characters!
Blodgett has broached the vampire/were genre in her latest novel, Blood Singers, giving readers a unique perspective of the two factions. She does a superb job presenting each distinct group within her novel, fleshing them out to the point that they become almost tangible. The characters seem to leap off the pages as the story unfolds, diving deeper into the past while focusing on the present and future to come.
Blodgett uses a wonderful technique in her storytelling, focusing on the present, but giving the reader small glimpses into the past as well. This allows two different stories, two different worlds, if you will, to co-exist as Julia deals with the present, the revelation that vampires and weres do exist, and her remembrance of the past, what seems like a lifetime ago when Julia was carefree and deeply in love. The suspense builds as the reader is given small glimpses into past events, piecing them together in order to figure out how Julia came to be where she is when the story opens. From the very beginning, the reader is cast deep into the action of the story as the vampires and weres go to war over blood, but it isn’t until Julia’s background is laid bare for the reader that all the pieces begin to fit together.
Julia is a very strong, resolute character. Though she is scared and longs for her life that once was, she does not lose faith or breakdown. Instead, she takes a stand against both factions, and though she is only one against many, she does not back down. I really liked this about Julia and was excited that Blodgett chose to create such a strong female lead. After the loss of her husband, friends, and life as she knew it, it would have been understandable if Julia gave in to the forces around her, but her spunk and constant fight to maintain control of her destiny made her a very well rounded character that captures the readers’ attention.
Blodgett’s explanation of the sub-human group, the Singers, was especially intriguing and eye opening. I enjoyed the descriptions of their abilities and how they fit into the world around them, and I also enjoyed getting to know the vast array of characters that set the stage for this intriguing novel. Complete with a twist at the end that leaves readers yearning for more, Blodgett has written another masterpiece, and I cannot wait to learn more about the groups and Julia’s plight in the next novel...
I downloaded this book back in March 2013 and I've absolutely no idea why it's taken me so long to actually get round to reading it. This is a surprising book even after reading the reviews it was so much more than I expected, it takes a bit of getting used to since it has multi person POV and past and present but once you settle in it's great. I personally like a book where you get different POV it gives a better understanding of the characters and in this book I think it's essential especially because if we were only getting Julia's POV we wouldn't get the full picture since she's blinded by grief and angry for huge sections. On the whole I loved this book, there were a couple of things I didn't like I'll be honest and admit that Julia got my nerves a bit a lot of her decisions didn't make sense and she has a habit of deliberately running head first towards danger but then she's young and she's been through so much, but between her running and her being kidnapped it's a bit like ping pong. Plot wise there was something I just don't get even though it was explained away I'm still not sure I understand the reasoning behind it I didn't want this to be a spoiler review but it's bugging me, it's not a huge spoiler but I'm going to add it at the bottom. In conclusion this is a book to lose yourself it, it's so much more than I expected and yes it does have a cliffhanger ending but I was prepared for it since I've already downloaded the second book, it's the surprise cliffhangers that get me.
####### SPOILER QUESTION ######## If Singers are in such short supply and desperately needed why kill two of them, even if it's seen as a waste them being together surely it's better than them not being here at all and the children they have are Singers so why stop them having future children after all it's more Singers which is what they want, isn't it, if it's because too many together are seen as dangerous and a family unit would be too strong then they've shown they're not adverse to kidnapping. Maybe it's me but I just can't get my head around it.
prodigious, fun, yet forbidden and sinfully exceptional! A must read! - Nook Books and More Blog
The book gives you countless POV so you can follow each one with ease. At first it took me a little time to get use to but, enjoyed it because I was able to see everything from each persons perspectives.
Julia is fun and in love. She can't wait to fall in Jason's arms as his wife once school finishes. She's quirky, fun, loving, and easy going. So far I'm not sure about her character. She needs more of a backbone but she is human after all or is she?
Jason is totally in love with Julia. He is counting the moments til they wed. He'd do anything for her. They seem to be on different sides of the track.
Jules best friend Addy. She's fun, loving, yet cocking. One thing for sure she loves her best friend.
Then they wed and before they consummate their marriage their world is turned upside down. Things are t what they seem and their pushed into a world they didn't know existed.
Once their world turned upside down the emotional roller coaster began! Be prepared to experience all emotions. You will not want to put this book down.
This series puts an amazing twist on such a diversity in the paranormal world. It explains the battles that all diversity struggle with even in their world. I found that interesting.
There where flashbacks within the story that gave you an overall picture of the back story so it made it easier to follow. There was so much drama and active with such unusual plots that it was easy to keep you intrigued through out the entire book. I'm not sure why some maybe confused from all the different POV. This is awesome. Why wait a long time for a different POV when you can lose some of what's going on from a past read. The flow was impeccably smooth. I was able to follow and not get lost on any scenes. I'm hoping for William! Yes I admit I'm team William! Awesome read! Way to go Tamara!
Blood Singers by Tamara Rose Blodgett was a free Novel via Amazon UK and recommended by a Friend, and once I read it I was so glad that I had taken the chance! This is a whole new world of Vampires, Werewolves, A new race called Blood Singers, and The Unseelie Fae. This is a whole different take on the classic and often over done genre, and was exceptionally refreshing! It had me looking forward to finding as many spare minuets of the day that I could to read, as I simply just could not put this novel down! It is so Addictive!!!! All of 4 different races want Julia for their own - but after being thrust head first into a world that she knows nothing about and doesn't understand, how is she supposed to choose, let alone understand what is going on? Within the Vampires there are 2 factions ready to fight over her, similarly within the Werewolf population there are also 2 different factions willing to kill for Julia - but just what makes her so special? Get ready to discover a plot filled with uncovered mysteries, lies and deceit, a plot that brings you into a world so vivid you will truly feel that you are right there with Julia. You will experience her joy, her happiness, her despair, her heartache, her losses but also importantly her gains, her abilities to overcome almost anything, her survival and most importantly just how big and open her heart is - All of this and with The American Feds chasing them all!! - Without them truly knowing what is going on either! A brilliant first novel in what looks like to be an addictive series that I for one am going to follow!!
This is kind of hard to give a star rating to. Some of the first things I noticed were the hopping between past/present, as well as POV. I found that I actually kind of liked it. It lures you along, giving small details. You start off rooting for MC, then you find yourself relating with the vamps, and then finally get a peek into the weres, the singers, as well as a small dip into the police investigating the whole thing. Who do I cheer for?!?! It jerks your feelings and loyalties all over the place, and it was entirely unpredictable. Loved it. This does lead to one little problem though. The cheese factor. I was constantly flipping the page to find someone else who wanted Julia all for themselves. While a little redundant, it did lead to an exciting climax! Blodgett's style does take some getting used to, but I have to say that I absolutely adored her graphic metaphors and similes. It gives the reader a very clear picture to run with. The characters are each unique, with distinct personalities and voices. Their dialogue is believable and great fun. I do wish that the whole thing had gone through one more round of edits, just to add clarity to some sections, but I won't ever judge a book harshly based solely on that. In the end, based purely on entertainment value, I give it a solid four stars. Even when I would put it down for the night, it would call to me, urging me to read just one more chapter. Just as the sequel calls to me now...
I stopped at page 60 and I can't give it a star rating, but I can vent ;) I'm very disappointed in this book because the premise sounded so good, but I couldn't get past the issues in writing. The characters felt cliché and were very irritating. In a couple of reviews I read, people called the book unpolished and I agree. More than that though, this felt like fanfiction more than a novel. Along these lines, the author had those line breaks in between paragraphs (is there an actual name for them?) and before each new section she either told you whose point of view it was or what was going to happen or where you were in the timeline. I could tell who the narrator was for the paragraph and the context gave away the time so this just irritated me. And as far as the point of view, one other review on GR mentioned that the POV is all third person, which doesn't give us the characters feelings, leaving them quite flat.
Sadly I can't recommend this book. In my opinion it needs quite a bit of work and I shall be returning it to the bookstore. Oh well.
i'm currently reading this and i'm already loving it! i can already tell you how i am going to rate this book lol.....5 stars!!! i'm only halfway through it so i can't say which character i am attached to the most, just yet. i haven't read enough about the weres at this point to say which side i love the most but i'm a huge vamp lover, sooooooooooo....... more on this book after i finish it. i'll probably rewrite this whole review. but so far, so good! i didn't expect anything but the best from TRB <3
i LOVE it!! another series i'm totally addicted to! i do not know what i would have down had i not stumbled upon the death series and then onto the rest of ur books....
i am sooooooooo torn on this book....i love a cpl ppl from each group :( *i'm totally in love with the feral, it's always the weird, crazy ones in ur books that i fall in love with lol..
i can't wait for the next book..all the next books lol in all the series!! i have nothing to read now :( lol <3 <3 <3
I'm sorry but I don't get this book. I was so bored it was just so slow and hectic. How the heck was that a first book?? Or in any series.
It was like one minute, Julia is terrified of the Vampires, and then she likes them. The next she is terrified of the Weres and then she is getting used to most of them. And then she is terrified of 'her own people' which is apparently 'the other blood singers' and she is super duper Queenie. In other words the author thought it would be interesting to have all these different groups fighting after her. And it would be if the book made any damn sense.
The more I 'review' this the more I'm wanting to One star this book's butt.
I will not be re-reading or following onto this series and I advise everybody else to not bother. Despite all those 4-5 star reviews (maybe they read something different) this book just isn't great. It took me 2 months to get through it!
Just finished this morning. Started a little bit confusing in the first twenty 'pages' or so but definitely started coming together quickly. Kinda reminds me of a boulder that is pushed down a mountain...starts off slowly, starts building up speed, and with all the trees and other items in it's path, you never quite know which direction it will take next. A definite page turner. This is my favorite (so far) out of all Of Tamara's books. Can't wait to see where the story goes next!
I kept going between three and four stars for this. The second half was good, but the first half had a lot of time jumping that got annoying. At no point was it confusing, but it could have been more linear. Honestly, there would have been more impact. Also, the reveal was not a big shock. Too many give-aways to be surprised. Still, the second half has me wanting to read the next book.
This was really quite good. Some of the hints were a bit obvious, and Scott being her soul meld was a bit clichéd, but good, nonetheless. How many people can one girl be kidnapped by? I look forward to reading the second in this series.
One of the best the author has offered. Compelling, keeps you reading, interesting themes... it has been a good read! If you are a T.R.B. fan, I would recommend that you pick up this novel ASAP!
She will be bound by fang, claw and blood, the kiss of the moon on high against where she lays to sleep. The queen shall bear the mark of the peacekeeping Singer....Your blood calls to us. It sings to us. We follow it like a melody on the wind. All roads lead to the Blood Singer. This girl. The Blood Singer from the Book of Blood. The Rare One. In the absence of hope, darkness bloomed like a black orchid.
Since this is the first time I have read this series, I am reviewing it as a whole (books 1-8), rather than each book. WOW! What a truly FANTASTIC series!!! This series is my soap opera, in all the best, juciest ways! So addicted! Need to know what’s happening and NOW! :) I was thoroughly addicted, caught in its grip, unable to put it down! I love, Love, LOVE how Tamara Rose Blodgett weaves such an intricate story complete with love, heartbreak, heartache, passion, friendship, enemies, lovers, allies and oh so much more all while seamlessly integrating so many characters to love & hate (sometimes both!) who belong to any one (or more!) of numerous species but done in a way to keep the reader engaged and following along, incorporating them without even realizing just how many people you now know & follow! It’s in depth in all the right places & ways and has such deep, dark passionate tones, as well as the lighter, happier sides too, that are all brought together so perfectly to make one helluva unique and creative series! I am blown away by the multitude of species and their abilities both as a whole, as well as what each individual is capable of! Each and every aspect & piece of the story brings layer upon layer of enrichment from complex characters, scenery, flow of the storytelling to the compelling storylines! Love the vernacular, quips, quotes & wording that fits for each character and/or species, meaning that the teens or "young'ins" speak & act as they should, while the "old" ones speak as they should, which adds an even deeper layer of "realism" to the story & characters. It was so hard to figure out the "good guys" from the "bad guys", (which is a great thing!) but what chafed me the most is falling for one that I was so sure was worthy of my adoration, then finding out he is total scum!! LOL But that is why I love, Love, LOVE Tamara's books! Her ability to write & create such deeply enriched books that capture my attention, drawing me in so deep that it feels like I am living the story, being surprised by every twist & turn that I never saw coming, really meeting & becoming friends (or enemies) with the multifaceted characters, becoming said characters, seeing every single bit of it in my mind’s eye, time after time, book after book, series after series, no matter the genre, is proof of just how phenomenally talented and exceptionally gifted Tamara Rose Blodgett truly is and why she is one of my absolutely favorite authors to read & binge read!!
I read this because I got if free. Awful. I thought the author was a 13 year old due to the language and the wondering prose. Should say I was very shocked at how many people "loved" this mangled series. It is a never ending soap opera with to many characters and a plot that moves like a plodding muse team. You hear the same whining weak "heroine " that has to have a gorgeous man or three save her so she will be safe. ☹️. I love romance but have a bit of self respect. Be a strong woman and save yourself, no one wants a stupid weak damsel in distress unless your maturity is stuck in adolescence. Don't waste your time on this author.
This book annoyed the hell out of me so much so that it gave me a headache . I tried to get into it but there are way too many twists and turns and too many points of view that it was dizzying . What happened to the good old days of just telling a friggin story!!! I will not read the other books it’s just too much. Should have stuck to story telling or the girls pint of view but you have everyone and their grandmothers view just too much!!! Girl gets kidnapped because she’s part of a legend. Well turns out she’s part of everyone’s legend it’s too much. Vampires , werewolves, seekers , bleepers I means geeeezzzzs I can’t!!!
This book seemed very disjointed. I will not be reading the rest of the series but thought I'd share why. There are too many view points, and with the way that it jumps between them can make it hard to tell who is the one relating the story. Add in some details that don't get fully explained or explained badly and it makes you have to read it multiple times to understand what is going on. The time skips were done pretty well considering, but I also feel like there was some important steps missing because of the time skips.
This book was excellent. I loved the different spin on the classic tale of vampires, werewolves, and such. The story was woven together well, and the characters were all believable. This is a part of a series, so while there is no cliffhanger, the story arc is not complete. I can't wait to find out what happens next!
"I was given this free review copy book at my request and have voluntarily left this review."
It took some time in the beginning to understand what was going on. Once I got the difference between flash backs and current events it was a nice read. All in all, Juliet seems like she is in a hopless situation with no way out and it isn't really a trope I like. I did get book 2.
As for the writing, it was pretty good. The passage of time was weird so I never knew how long she was at each location which made the pace of the book awkward.
Julia is a blood singer, the rare one... She survives trauma and tragedy only to be hunted by vampires, werewolves and blood singers alike... will she survive the ultimate betrayal?? This book shifts to many povs and I had some difficulty navigating.. But I am enjoying the story and am on to the next installment as this leaves on a cliffhanger.
