From a bestselling Canadian author comes a delightful enemies-to-lovers holiday rom-com set in the quaint town of Maple Falls, about a city girl and a small-town boy who compete in the town's annual holiday games in order to win the right price for a Christmas shop, perfect for fans of The Hating Game and One Day in December.
One rivalry. Eight days until Christmas. Let the holiday games begin.
When LA-based real estate developer Bella Ross arrives in the sleepy, mountain town of Maple Falls, she has one mission: to acquire the local failing Christmas shop, Always Noelle, securing the promotion of her dreams. Nothing can get in her way. Except the shop owner’s stubborn grandson, Jesse Harrison.
Both refuse to budge, until an unlikely wager is struck: Bella and Jesse will compete in the Maple Falls Holiday Games, an annual tradition of eccentric feats of strength and skills. Winner decides the selling price. They’ll give each other a run for their money, but as the competition heats up, Bella and Jesse’s icy feelings toward each other begin to thaw. It’ll take a Christmas miracle for them to admit there’s a spark, but what if it’s just another game?

*Whomp whomp* I absolutely loved the setting of this small town and the cover, but in the end could not root for the couple, which is a huge portion of reading a romance novel.
In case you haven’t heard, Holly Cassidy is the pen name for Hannah Mary McKinnon. I haven’t read one of her thrillers yet, but have heard wonderful things and adore her on social media. When I heard she was branching out into the romance genre, I was giddy with delight to see how her fan base would react to such a vast change. Overall, I think writing crossover stuck the landing, it was more personal issues I took with the plot that detracted from my rating. I would definitely try another romance, especially a holiday themed one, from this author in the future.
Maple Falls is a small town in Colorado that is known for its charm, but also for its Christmas themed store, Always Noelle. Jess’s grandfather, Clarence, runs Always Noelle, and had hoped that his grandson would inherit the business one day as a family tradition, but when Jess’s parents die in an accident, he flees the town and tries to make a name for himself in a bigger city. When his company fizzles out, he returns home to help his grandfather, but by this point the debt hanging over the store due to the need to pay for his late grandmother’s medical bills is too great to keep going the way that they are. Clarence needs to sell, even if it is gutting both men to entertain the prospect.
Enter Bella, charged with sealing the sale of Always Noelle to the firm she works for, arriving to Maple Falls and expecting to be sailing out within 24 hours. After low balling Clarence in an attempt to impress her boss, she gets roped into another deal: compete in the town’s Holiday Games against his grandson, and if she wins, he will sign her contract. If she loses, let’s just say she’ll be looking for another job. So begins our enemies-to-lovers Christmas romance.
I love small towns. I love the holidays. I adore enemies-to-lovers romance. This should have been a sure fire 5 star winner for me, but alas, I had some issues along the way. One thing I had trouble overlooking is the fact that this story is definitely written in a “tell, rather than show” format. There are many chapters including long inner monologues, telling us about their day and things that happened, which became a bit tedious. There are even repetitive chapters where we sometimes see the same scene from both perspectives, but there’s no new information included here, which bogged down the narrative and gave a lack of depth to the characters. I thought the Holiday Games would take up a decent portion of the book, but it’s actually quite a minor part of the story. That’s not a slight against the author, I just didn’t have my expectations in the right place.
Without going into spoilers, the largest issue you I have is with the MMC. Jess is very cautious in trusting Bella, even after they seemingly go from enemies-to-lusters in the blink of an eye. His personality comes off as hypocritical when he judges others for minor issues, while carrying on a friendship with the main antagonist in the town, even after the inexcusable thing she did to him. It felt so frustrating watching his attitude of others while pulling the stunt he does at the end of the book, and there being essentially no groveling on his end to begin making amends for it. I realize this is just personal pet peeves, and some readers may find the angst this plot device brings to be a plus in the entertainment department.
If you’re looking for a small town, Christmas themed romance this fall/winter, this is one from a seasoned writer, and it has a lot going for it. I wish I had been able to connect with it more, but I know the right readers will just adore Maple Falls and all that it has to offer.
*Many thanks to the publisher for providing my review copy.
I loved this sweet Christmas book! I haven’t read any of the author’s thrillers so I’ll definitely be on the lookout for her books in the future.
I really appreciated the strong female MC and although a stubborn ass sometimes I liked the guy just as much. I thought the characters were very well developed and I think the writing helped readers get an idea of who the characters are, their insecurities and their quirks.
The storyline was also creative and with the little intricacies of the wager I was impressed that the author covered all bases with seemingly no plot holes. That was probably a challenge to make sure everything made sense and didn’t conflict.
The games were also so fun and it made me want to start some fun games like that with friends or family!
Possible minor spoiler: My only gripe is that I wish they didn’t flip so fast from being enemies to friends. I think it could have packed a little more of a punch if they kept up the competitive outer shell throughout most of the book.
This book felt like a Hallmark Christmas movie with a sprinkle of Gilmore Girls. I loved the quirky, small town vibes as Bella and Jesse compete in the town's holiday games as a way of settling a real estate business deal. While the ending felt a bit predictable, the characters felt realistic and well developed and I was eager to follow the story until the very end.
If you love Christmas, flirtatious banter, and cute romance, I think you'll really enjoy this one. This enemies-to-lovers romcom is perfect for a cozy, holiday read.
Thank you to the publisher and to NetGalley for providing an e-ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Bella Ross has been tasked by her employer to travel to Maple Falls, Colorado to purchase Always Noelle, a struggling Christmas themed Shop. Always Noelle is Jesse Harrison's grandfather's shop. Jesse left town after his parents’ deaths and comes home after his business fails. Upon his return to Maple Falls, he found Clarence, his grandfather, is struggling with debt and needs to sell Always Noelle. Bella makes an offer on the shop, but it doesn't go quite as planned. A wager is made, Jesse and Bella must compete in the Maple Falls Holiday Games, and the winner will decide the selling price.
Bella and Jesse are enemies to lovers in this small-town holiday book. Yes, the book is predictable, but romance books tend to be so. It is all about the journey that matters to me. The games that they had to play were interesting and fun. The small town of Maple Falls had a very charming feel and helped to add to the atmosphere in the book. Clarence was also a great and likeable character.
For me, this was an enjoyable book but didn't quite wow me as I had hoped it would. This felt like a Hallmark movie (not a bad thing) and is light on romance. Their attraction happens fast. We get their POV’s, and things do get repetitive.
I was hoping to enjoy this one more than I did. Will I remember this book in months to come, probably not. But I did enjoy the time I spent reading it. I have to also give her props for coming up with the creative Holiday games.
Holly Cassidy is the pen name of Hannah Mary McKinnon. She usually writes suspense books and I believe this is her first foray into romance.

Thank you to PENGUIN GROUP Putnam, G.P. Putnam's Sons and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.
This was a cutie little holiday read! I liked how we knew what was going on but there wasn’t really any spice. I thought the atmosphere was fun and I really liked the characters! It wasn’t my favorite holiday read but there wasn’t anything I necessarily didn’t like about it so I gave it 4⭐️😊
- This is my favorite Christmas book so far this year! It really felt like hallmark movie vibes and I loved all of the characters in this book too. It was a super fun and fully read! - I loved the ending of this one and feel like the author wrapped everything up in the best way. I wasn’t sure exactly how this one would end, but I was really satisfied with it. - The holiday games were so fun to read! This book definitely got me into the Christmas spirit!
Did you know that Holly Cassidy is the pen name for crime writer Hannah Mary McKinnon?
If you are curious like me, check out her Facebook page where she tells how she came up with her pen name!
McKinnon writes stellar thrillers and has ventured to the lighter side of romance in her holiday romcom, ‘The Christmas Wager.’
In short, when Bella is sent to Maple Falls to acquire ‘property,’ she discovers that it’s a generational Christmas shop in a small town and that the owner’s grandson is shocked to learn that his grandfather is offloading it in a wheel of a deal. Bella Ross and Jesse Harrison finally agree on a ‘Christmas Wager’, the winner gets to determine the price tag of Always Noelle.
Things I loved: ✔️ enemies-to-lovers trope ✔️ characters’ backstories ✔️ city-girl-meets-small-town-boy trope ✔️ festive twist on traditional rom-com ✔️ full of Christmas cheer and laughter ✔️ Grandpa’s character ✔️ Hallmarkish; sweet, closed-door romance ✔️ vividly described small-town setting ✔️ tension of high-stakes competition ✔️ message about belonging and hope ✔️ message about working as a team ✔️ message about understanding each other’s strengths/weaknesses ✔️ message about tradition and family
This is one of those books you’ll want to pull out and read every Christmas because you know you’ll get a break from the stresses of the season! Who doesn’t need a great laugh amidst the frantic pressure and busyness?!
I was gifted this copy by Penguin Random House Canada and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.
I think if you're looking for a straightforward Hallmark-type plot in book form, you'll love this one! It was cute, but having read this storyline many, many times, I was left underwhelmed.
Bella Ross works for Dillon & Prescott, a development company based in Los Angeles. They have their sights set on the idyllic Maple Falls, hoping to obtain its local knickknack store (Always Noelle) and turn it into high-end, luxury real estate. But Jesse, the grandson of the owner, is determined to protect the beloved shop from an easy sale.
I really liked the idea of these two stubborn enemies creating a wager to determine the fate of Always Noelle. As they compete in the Maple Falls Holiday Games, there's plenty of festive challenges to bring out your Christmas spirit—even for Bella the Grinch.
Both Bella and Jesse have glimpses of heartfelt backstories, but I struggled with the lack of depth overall. I love a lighthearted Christmas romance, but it's one of those instances where I felt the story was told to me rather than shown to me. The writing style combined with the fast progression from enemies to lovers made it hard to believe in the romance.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
3.5⭐️For anyone who loves to binge holiday reads, this was cute and charming romance that follows two “enemies” as they compete in a series of holiday themed games to see who can win a real estate deal. While not quite a standout, I enjoyed the cast of characters and found the audiobook to be an easy escape listen.

The Christmas Wager is Hannah Mary McKinnon's first novel writing as Holly Cassidy and I can't even tell you how happy this book made me! I was a tiny bit disappointed to learn that Maple Falls wasn't based on a place in Colorado, but I did love that she drew on her experiences in the Swiss Alps to make it happen. From the very beginning, it read exactly like a Hallmark Christmas movie, and since it is no secret that I adore those movies, it really isn't a surprise that I loved this as well. The story alternates between Bella and Jesse's viewpoints, and since I hadn't read the synopsis before reading this, it made the meet-cute even better and more Hallmark-y for me. I loved the tension between them that slowly builds to love, and their banter was perfection.
Lauren Ezzo & Adam Verner narrate the audiobook, and they were wonderful as the voices of Bella and Jesse, so much so that I dare say they made the book even better for me. Their narration allowed me to connect even more to the MCs and I highly recommend it to the audio lovers out there! As with a Hallmark movie, you have a general idea of what will happen, but there was still plenty that managed to surprise me and some deviousness I wasn't expecting! The end made my heart happy, and more than a few people ended up getting their HEAs... The Christmas Wager would be an excellent choice for readers who love Hallmark, are looking for a happily ever after with some twists, and characters that will make them want to keep reading.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Hannah Mary McKinnon returns following The Revenge List with her latest, THE CHRISTMAS WAGER, writing as Holly Cassidy—a fun, lively, and romantic comedy rom-com Christmas story set in a quaint small town with two competitors fighting for a chance at a failing Christmas store. In the process, they may get more than they bargained for.
Let the games begin!
"Rivalry adds so much to the charms of one's conquests." —Louisa MayAlcott
Bella Ross is a real estate developer, a city girl from LA, California. She does not care for the holidays. She is ambitious and driven, almost 30 years old. She had been with her company for three years. Her boss has given her an opportunity of a lifetime.
They are opening a new branch in Denver, Colorado. Bella is being considered as the leader to build and lead the sales & marketing team there with the new title of Associate VP of West Coast & Central Sales.
First, they give her an assignment to see what she is capable of, and then they will decide. She must go to Maple Falls, a picturesque and idyllic small mountain town. She is not sure about 'small' town. But she will prove herself, return, and take her boss' job one day.
There is a property the company has its eyes on— a building—an ancient knickknack store that sells holiday trinkets and more. It is failing, and they want to transform it into a high-end duplex and more expansion throughout the small town.
Bella's job is to negotiate the purchase of the property with the older owner. He is old-school and will consider an offer presented in person. Not a cent more than she has specified. She has strict orders from her boss.
She must get it for the lowest price to prove she is up to the challenge. She will receive a very nice bonus if she gets the property for a steal. Her boss wants it wrapped up before Christmas.
Nothing or no one could stop her. That is until she meets Jesse.
Jesse Harrison (about the same age) is the owner's stubborn, hunky grandson, an electrician. The business is called Always Noelle on Town Square in Maple Falls.
Maple Falls has about three thousand people and is full of community spirit. Always Noelle had been in Maple Falls and their family for generations, named after his great-great-grandmother. In its heyday, customers traveled for miles year-round to visit the Colorado Mountains' premier holiday shop. Unfortunately, not too much anymore since most people do their shopping online.
Christmas is Jesse's favorite holiday, which was only one week away. Always Noelle had turned a profit for decades, and his mother took over the daily operations of the general store from his grandparents when he was 15. Jesse had returned to his hometown two years earlier when they lost his Grams to cancer, but now Pops was alone and needed him.
Bella and Jesse meet. They are on opposite sides.
Bella wants to buy the store for practically nothing. Jesse is totally against it. Neither is budging. Jesse hoped he would not see her again. However, an unlikely wager leads them to compete in the town's quirky annual Holiday Games, a feat of strength and skill. The winner decides the selling price.
Both are competitive, but soon, sparks fly between the city girl and the country boy. They are drawn to one another even though they are different.
Do they have any outside help? You must read it to find out what happens!
THE CHRISTMAS WAGER is a charming holiday tale, highly entertaining, with a quaint town filled with traditions and pride in its community. It is a fun, cute story full of holiday charm, humor, competition, and a budding romance from enemies to lovers. Two people on different trajectories whose lives collide with new beginnings! A perfect Hallmark Christmas story.
Ideal for book clubs (discussion questions & Q&A included) and holiday gift giving!
A big fan of the author, I enjoyed the inspiration behind the story and visiting the fictional town of Maple Falls and all its supporting characters! If you are looking for a fun holiday read, look no further! For fans of Viola Shipman & Debbie Macomber's holiday books
I ordered the audiobook narrated by two favorites, Lauren Ezzo and Adam Verner!

3.5⭐️ Bella Ross is up for the promotion of her dreams. All she has to do is fly to the small mountain town of Maple Falls and seal the deal of the failing shop, Always Noelle. She is convinced this will be easy, however, the owners grandson Jesse, proves her otherwise. That is until, his grandfather strikes up a wager, the winner decides the price of the shop. 8 days of winter games will be all it takes. Yet, as the days go on and games are played, Bella and Jesse’s feelings for each other begin to come to the surface, putting everything at risk.
Oops, totally forgot to post this review. Thank you to my lovely friend Diane for sending me this book (although I forgot my physical copy at home it now has a lovely home on my bookshelf). This was the perfect Christmas romance that wasn’t too cheesy and was perfect for getting you into the holiday spirit.
The standard meet-cute gets a hilarious, warm and romantic refresh in The Christmas Wager. With a charming setting and a lovable cast of supporting characters, readers will root for Bella and Jesse in more ways than one. Let the games begin! — Elyssa Friedland, author of The Most Likely Club
Buddy read with @Kyle Erin! We decided on 6 chapters a day and discussed at the end of the day/the next morning.
Overall The Christmas Wager is a cute holiday romance! Bella who is a real estate developer working for a company based in LA is sent to Maple Falls, a small town in Colorado, to purchase a Christmas shop in order to secure a promotion. Bella wanting to impress her boss, makes Clarence, the owner of the Christmas shop a low offer and right before he signs, his grandson Jessie steps in and ruins the deal. With some back and forth between the two, Clarence proposes a Christmas Wager: Bella will participate in the Maple Falls Holiday Games which is an annual tradition of various competition games, from baking to singing to a marathon, against Jessie who is a multi-year champion. If Bella wins, they will sell the store for her offer. If Jessie wins then she will have to increase her offer to their preferred amount.
This is a bit like a Hallmark movie with the big-city girl visiting a small town where she falls in love with a local and tries to save his business, which isn't typically my cup of tea. Jessie also wasn't my favorite most of the time. The jealous/annoying exes and the toxic work environment weren't my absolute favorite either, but I did like Bella and enjoyed the games!
This was such a cute and heartwarming Christmas RomCom! I am a major fan of Hallmark holiday movies and this is just that but in book form. I loved the writing and the characters were cute and likeable. If you are looking for holiday RomCom with a little bit of spice this one needs to be on your TBR.
I went between reading and listening to this book, which I loved because I got the best of both worlds. The narrators, Lauren Ezzo and Adam Verner, were great and made the listening experience great!
****Many thanks to Holly Cassidy, Putnam Books and PRHaudio for my gifted copies in turn for an honest opinion.
A cute romantic comedy for Christmas that encapsulates all the magical elements the feeling of a classic Christmas movie. It's got all the elements, a woman who hates Christmas, a cozy little town, a competition, and lots of snow.
3.5 rounded up to 4.
Bella is ambitious so she doesn't shy away when her boss proposes she goes to a small town in the middle of Colorado to buy a store. No, she decides to excel, as usual. So she offers even below her lowest budget. And she's about to close the deal when the grandson Jesse shows up. His grandfather needs to sell and the offers aren't coming, so he dares Bella: a Christmas wager on the price for his store. If she loses the yearly competition the small town puts on against his grandson, she'll buy the building for a lot more her boss has authorized. But she doesn't mind the consequences, because she knows she'll win and take it for her initial offer.
It made me a little dizzy how unfair the terms were for the loser, no matter which side it was—Bella would definitely lose her job. For a long part of the book, I wasn't cheering for either side, hoping for something to change that wager. But regardless of the stakes, Bella and Jesse had good chemistry. I'm not sure about how quickly they fell in love, and I would have enjoyed it more if they had bickered for a little longer. But I could see how they'd like each other.
As I said, one of the issues related to that. The foes-to-lovers trope, which should have been the main attraction of this read, while present, doesn't fully flourish to its potential. This leaves their romantic journey feeling slightly more mature and less swoon-inducing than anticipated. The other issue is related. There wasn't much to the book. It's your average romance, though very well written and planned, it missed on some magic. The book seems to promise quirkier, offbeat elements than it ultimately delivers.
Despite that, the competition itself was fun, I loved the idea of the Merriatrics, a group plotting for the craziest twists in the games, which were already crazy and twisted enough. In fact, I would have loved to learn more about the members—then again, since they weren't key to the romance, it might have made the .book drag, I understand that much.
The characters were also lovely. Though I didn't like Jesse's ex, who is the rival in their romance for obvious reasons, I need to admit she behaved in a believable manner instead of warming up to Bella instantly.
The ending was probably the too fantastic kind but it was satisfactory where it needed to be. In other words, what you'd expect from a romcom.
This is a delightful romantic comedy that embodies the spirit of the holiday season. Also, I'm crossing my fingers for more romcoms by Holly Cassidy.
Honest review based on an ARC provided by Netgalley. Many thanks to the publisher for this opportunity.
Thank you NetGalley for an early copy of The Christmas Wager in exchange for an honest review.
I wanted to love this book so much. It sounded like the perfect cute and cozy holiday romance to kick off Christmas in July. But enemies-to-lovers AND insta-love in the same story is a tall order and it didn’t quite work here. Their relationship (if you can call it that after a week) was very surface-level and I’m not convinced either of them were in love. The entire story was fairly surface-level as well, filled with stock characters and a too-neat and easy ending.
But the setting is perfect for a Christmas story. If you like small towns with Hallmark vibes and holiday cheer, and don’t need to be invested in the romance, you might enjoy this story.
I absolutely loved every single second of this book. It was such a delight, it was so fun, always something happening, it was cute and swoony and adorable. It's the perfect read to get you into your holiday feels I can assure you ! It is a closed door romance so perfect for anyone really ❤️
I can't believe this is the same author that crafts all those thrillers, she knocked the romcom out of the park. It was super cheesy and let me tell you I was here for it ! It also explores much deeper themes like friendship, family, loss, forgiveness and especially realizing what truly matters in life, I loved that so much.
I loved the plot and storyline, especially the wager and the Christmas games. It was so much fun, honestly this book is just a huge serotonin book. I absolutely loved it.
I listened to this one and the narrators did an AMAZING job, Lauren Ezzo was soooo good as Bella, she hit the emotions, the feelings everything so so well. It was truly such fun to listen to. Highly recommend.
If you're looking for a cute, cozy, flirtatious Cristmas romcom with great banter don't miss out this holiday season, this is the one !
✨️Thank you to #partner @prhaudio, @hollycassidy & @hannahmarymckinnon for my free audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
Whenever I need a little ego boost I pick up a romance book. There's something about the confidence of knowing you could write something better than what you have in your hand. Truly beautiful.
Okay so this was obviously about as predictable as the Pistons losing a game. And you know what, there's nothing wrong with that. BUT, I need the characters to be interesting. They were so dull and honestly when I wasn't paying attention I would forget whose perspective I was reading because they were so flat.
Also, I was promised an enemies to lovers?!?!?!? They were effectively snogging at first sight. There was zero tension. Also the premise of the wager was a bit too weighty to picture them actually falling in love. If I was Jesse I would have manipulated that girl so I could get the extra ONE HUNDRED FIFTY THOUSAND DOLLARS!!!! Be fr my man.
I will say that the pacing was unexpectedly very well done. In my opinion, Romance books often go on for too long, but I felt that this 300 pager kept my interest for its entirety.
3.5★ Now this is a Christmas book! It was so cute and cheesy and just really got me in much more of a holiday mood than other reads this month. I didn’t mind that it was PG (appreciated it tbh) and I just really enjoyed how likeable all the characters were and the typical small town and enemies-to-lovers tropes. Perfect for the holidays!
