- BIOGRAPHY
Christine, Landgräfin von Hessen, was born in Kassel on 29 June 1543, the daughter of Philipp I 'the Magnanimous', Landgraf von Hessen, and Herzogin Christine von Sachsen. On 29 June 1564 at Gottorp she married Adolf, Herzog von Holstein-Gottorp, son of Frederik I, king of Denmark and Norway, and his second wife Sophie von Pommern. They had ten children of whom Johann Adolf and three daughters would have progeny.
Adolf died on 11 October 1586, and from 1587 to 1593 Christine, as dowager duchess of Holstein-Gottorp, was regent for her sons Friedrich II, Philipp and Johann Adolf. Her eldest son Friedrich II succeeded his father as duke of Gottorp at the age of 18. He died after one year and was succeeded by their second son Philipp, and after his death in 1590, by the youngest, Johann Adolf. Her husband had been given the duchy after the death of his father Frederik I of Denmark.
From 1587 to her death, Christine was also in charge of the administrative office and castle of Kiel. She died in Kiel on 23 May 1604.
