"Dark Mirage"[2] is a medley from Kirby Star Allies. It plays when fighting Morpho Knight while player 1 is Dark Meta Knight in Guest Star ???? Star Allies Go! and Soul Melter or Soul Melter EX difficulty of The Ultimate Choice. It can be found as track 179 in that game's Jukebox after clearing Guest Star Dark Meta Knight.

Composition[edit]

The dark one facing off a mirage of sorts.

"Dark Mirage" is a medley of two boss themes from Kirby & The Amazing Mirror: "Boss Battle Theme" and "Last Boss / Second Form". It is a rock-style medley with a focus on percussion that primarily uses electric guitars as leading instruments.

It starts with a unique intro that feature a glass shattering sound, and an electric guitar holding out a note; this quick intro is followed by the intro of "Boss Battle Theme". That theme then plays in full in its original key of C minor, but as its final section plays, it starts to prep for a transition to the next song, becoming tonally unstable. The last four bars of the song don't feature the counter melody present in the original, and the main melody doesn't resolve like it, instead mostly repeating the previous four bars, as hints of "Last Boss / Second Form" start to emerge. A condensed version of that theme's intro is played by a bass, and the drums transition the song to "Last Boss / Second Form". The song plays in full, sans the intro proper, in B-flat minor like the original, but in a much faster tempo, to match that of "Boss Battle Theme". Once it's over, a short original outro plays, which mostly resolves "Last Boss / Second Form"'s melody and serves as a bridge to loop back to "Boss Battle Theme", with a quick drum solo in the middle. The song then loops, skipping the intro.

Trivia[edit]

  • The idea to arrange this medley as rock music was by series director Shinya Kumazaki. Specifically, he likes to highlight the individuality of staff whenever possible, so he suggested Yuuta Ogasawara to arrange it in that style. Ogasawara thinks he was able to express his own colors, and in particular added some individuality in the drum-focused nature of the medley, as he used to be a drummer. While he was worried when first arranging it, as the original songs were not composed by Jun Ishikawa or Hirokazu Ando, he still managed to finish it, and considers it a highlight of his music work for Kirby Star Allies.[3]
