Roles are archetypical representations of humanity associated with the Refinements of Prometheans.
Overview[]
Each Refinement has three Roles associated with it, which exemplify the Refinement's theme. When Created adopt a particular Refinement, they must automatically adopt one of the Roles and attempt to embody it as best they can. Turning away from the Role they've chosen before completing it counts as a Breaking Point on the Pilgrimage, as does staying within a completed Role for too long.[1] A Promethean who stays in a completed Role will trigger Wastelands and massive Disquiet if they "break character" or finally choose a new Role; remaining in a role too long may transform them into one of the petrificati, an automaton incapable of doing anything but performing their fossilized Role.[2]
Completing a Role looks different for different Created, but always counts as a milestone on the Pilgrimage. Performing a Role poorly is not the same as turning away from it. For instance, a follower of Aurum in the Companion Role may earn a milestone for developing an intimate relationship, being accepted in a group, or for being rejected by the people she's trying to get close to (for mundane reasons, rather than due to Disquiet). Both failures and successes contribute to an understanding of the Refinement and, ultimately, towards the Pilgrimage.
By completing Roles within the same Refinement, the Created can access multiple Alembics from the Refinement's signature Transmutations.
