Bolade Atwan is the Proxy of teleportation and the founder of the Upeo wa Macho

Biography[]

Atwan was born in 2070 in Sokoto, Nigeria, the third of eight children. She became a police officer in her hometown, where she was the victim of an inexplicable attack by a woman named Beulah Popesclav, who was eventually institutionalized with dementia.[1]

Atwan served with distinction for over a decade, but in 2101 she became to experience the first symptoms of her psi aptitude: she increasingly felt disoriented, even getting lost in familiar places. When the disorientation became severe enough to interfere with her work, Atwan took a leave of absence from the police force, and eventually found her way to Luna to meet the Doyen.[2][3] Upon her return, she retired from the police force and began quietly building the Upeo, funding it with cash payments from Norça and FSA rebel groups in exchange for aiding them with teleportation.[2]

Atwan was a humorless, disciplined person, and her intense practicality made her somewhat naive with respect to politics. This blind spot would haunt her in the future.[4] Still, she took a personal role in recruiting each and every teleporter, ensuring that the Upeo were a small but cohesive order.[5]

Upeo Exodus[]

In late 2113, Atwan reveled to the other Proxies the existence of Eden, a planet seemingly colonized by novas. This immediately brought the Upeo under suspicion, which intensified over Atwan's reluctance to share the full details of her order's interaction with the Edenites - which only justified that reluctance, in Atwan's mind.[6]

In 2114, the seven Proxies met as a group to discuss the issue: the others declared that teleportation was too powerful and important to be monopolized by a single order any longer, and too dangerous to be used unsupervised. They demanded that the Upeo submit to the control of the other orders. Atwan stormed out of the meeting and immediately ordered the Upeo to evacuate all equipment and personnel to Ruan's World. The Ministry, Orgotek and the Legions, meanwhile, immediately mobilized against the Upeo, and it was in the midst of this standoff that Aberrants sent the Esperanza crashing down to Earth.[7][8]

Atwan and her lieutenants retreated to the Sphere, a secret space station only accessible by teleportation.[9] She regrets the suffering that resulted from the conflict between her order and the others, but still feels she made the right choice in leaving Earth.[4]
